Trailing P/E near 149x becomes roughly 178x on owner earnings, free cash flow after charging SBC as a real cost to owners. The lens is general equity research with balanced risk tolerance, covering both the next 12 months and a 3–5-year ownership horizon. The May 18, 2026 library report is used only to identify what must be challenged. Its valuation ranges are not inputs to the valuation below.
Research Summary
Palantir has crossed a line that matters more than the slogans around artificial intelligence. This is no longer a software company asking investors to look through losses while it waits for operating leverage. It is now growing at a rate normally associated with an early-stage company while producing margins and cash flow normally associated with a mature software franchise. Revenue increased 56% in 2025 to 4.475 billion USD. Q1 2026 then grew 85%; Q2 accelerated again to 93%, taking quarterly revenue to 1.935 billion USD. GAAP operating margin reached 47% in Q2, operating cash flow was 1.216 billion USD, and conventional free cash flow before Palantir’s non-GAAP adjustment was about 1.202 billion USD.
The mix makes the acceleration more consequential. Q2 U.S. commercial revenue rose 149% to 764 million USD; U.S. government revenue rose 90% to 809 million USD. Total U.S. revenue reached 1.573 billion USD, up 115%. Palantir closed 220 deals worth at least 1 million USD, including 73 at least 10 million USD. U.S. commercial total contract value was 2.132 billion USD, up 153%, while U.S. commercial remaining deal value reached 6.238 billion USD, up 124% year over year and 27% sequentially. The forward contract indicators were accelerating too, not just the revenue being recognized.
Management responded by moving FY2026 revenue guidance from 7.650–7.662 billion USD after Q1 to 8.150–8.158 billion after Q2. The midpoint increase is roughly 6.5% in one quarter. U.S. commercial guidance moved from more than 3.224 billion USD to more than 3.424 billion, and adjusted free-cash-flow guidance increased to 4.5–4.7 billion USD. Q2 itself had been guided at only 1.797–1.801 billion USD after Q1; the actual 1.935 billion came in roughly 7.6% above the midpoint of management’s own three-month-old forecast.
That changes the May thesis materially. On May 18 the actual closing price was 135.14 USD, rather than the 133.99 USD reference price recorded in the prior library report. The stock closed September 4 at 174.33 USD, a 29.0% increase. Yet independently reconstructed trailing diluted GAAP EPS rose from about 0.89 USD on the information available in mid-May to approximately 1.17 USD now, or about 32%. The resulting trailing P/E moved from roughly 152x to 148–149x. Nearly the entire May-to-September share-price return can be explained by the growth of trailing earnings; the trailing multiple actually compressed slightly. That is a very different description from “the stock rose because investors paid an ever-higher multiple.” The market price went up, but the earnings denominator went up faster. The calculations use the company’s reported quarterly net income and diluted share counts rather than the old report’s valuation numbers.
What changed versus the prior coverage is fundamental, not cosmetic: Palantir grew into part of its valuation faster than the share price appreciated. The May report’s strongest factual premise, that the traded price sat above even an optimistic valuation case, no longer survives my independent scenario work. My optimistic DCF is around 172 USD per share, essentially where the stock trades. But the more important conclusion is subtler: the stock has moved from “well beyond an optimistic outcome” to “already pricing something close to an optimistic outcome.” That is a large improvement in valuation geometry, but it does not create a margin of safety.
The market is currently trading two intertwined narratives. The first is real: AIP appears to have changed Palantir’s commercial sales velocity. AIP was introduced in mid-2023; since then the company has used bootcamps and short, intensive deployments to move prospective customers from AI experimentation toward production workflows. Customer count was 1,049 at Q2 2026, up roughly 24% year over year. Revenue grew 93%. Revenue outrunning customer count by that much suggests expansion inside existing accounts and larger initial deployments are doing much of the work.
The second narrative is capital-market extrapolation: Palantir is being priced as one of the very few application-layer AI companies capable of sustaining hypergrowth, extreme operating leverage and high cash conversion simultaneously. At 174.33 USD, trailing diluted P/E is about 149x. Using fully diluted equity value rather than basic market capitalisation, trailing conventional P/FCF is roughly 133x. After subtracting stock-based compensation from FCF as an economic cost to owners, the trailing owner-earnings multiple is approximately 178x. Fully diluted EV/TTM sales is about 71x; EV/FY2026 guided revenue is still around 54x. Consensus 2027 revenue near 12.2 billion USD would bring that figure down to roughly 36x, but only after another year of about 50% growth.
Those multiples explain why rates still matter so much to the stock. In early September, Palantir sold off with high-duration software as global bond yields rose; MarketWatch put the stock at roughly 82x estimated forward earnings during that move and noted that its peak forward multiple in 2025 had exceeded 230x. On September 4, stronger U.S. jobs data pushed the two-year Treasury yield to about 4.37%, adding another duration shock to richly valued technology stocks.
Today’s operating business deserves a much higher valuation than it did when revenue was growing 20–30%, profitability was marginal and SBC absorbed much of the economic output. It does not follow that any valuation is justified. My base DCF assumes 2026–2031 revenue compounds at roughly 35% after the already-guided 82% growth in 2026, reaches approximately 36.7 billion USD in 2031, and eventually delivers a 50% SBC-adjusted owner-earnings margin. Those are aggressive assumptions. With a 9.5% discount rate, 3% terminal growth and modest continuing dilution, the present value is only about 110 USD per share. The optimistic case requires approximately 40% annual revenue growth through 2031, more than 43 billion USD of 2031 revenue, a 52% terminal owner-earnings margin, a 9% discount rate and only 0.5% annual net share growth to reach about 172 USD.
This is why the valuation disagreement is not really about whether Palantir is executing well. It plainly is. The disagreement is about the duration of extraordinary performance. A buyer at 174 USD needs several things to remain true at once: commercial AI deployment must keep expanding far faster than ordinary enterprise software; the U.S. government business must continue winning large programs despite procurement and political sensitivity; margins must remain unusually high even after charging SBC as a real cost; competitors with much larger distribution channels must fail to commoditize enough of Palantir’s application layer; and the discount rate applied to long-duration software earnings cannot rise enough to offset fundamental growth.
The government side deserves equal billing with commercial AI. H1 2026 revenue was still 52% government and approximately 80% of companywide revenue came from U.S. customers. Palantir benefits from large U.S. defense and intelligence programs, including the Army enterprise framework and Maven-related work, but many government contracts run only one to five years and commonly allow termination for convenience. Contract ceilings also must not be confused with booked revenue: an “up to” multi-billion-dollar procurement vehicle establishes a route for task orders; it does not guarantee that the full ceiling becomes revenue.
Political sensitivity is already observable outside the United States. A U.K. parliamentary committee in June 2026 described dependence on Palantir in parts of the public sector as an unacceptable concentration risk and questioned the NHS relationship. In July, Palantir challenged a decision blocking it from a roughly £50 million London Metropolitan Police procurement. These events are small relative to current U.S. growth, but they reveal a structural feature of the model: the closer Palantir gets to sovereign data and coercive state functions, the stronger the switching costs can become and the more politically contested the supplier can become.
SBC is also changing in a way that deserves a more balanced treatment than either “SBC does not matter” or “all free cash flow is fake.” SBC was 684 million USD in 2025, roughly 15.3% of revenue, down sharply as a percentage of revenue from 2024. H1 2026 SBC was 466.8 million USD, up 48% in dollars but only about 13.1% of revenue because the top line grew so much faster. The bigger signal is the share base: diluted weighted-average shares were 2.569 billion in Q2 2026 versus 2.563 billion a year earlier, only about 0.2% higher. The legacy dilution problem has not vanished, but the share count has stopped expanding at the pace seen in 2023–2025.
The balance sheet removes one common source of permanent-loss risk. Palantir had about 9.2 billion USD of cash, cash equivalents and short-term U.S. Treasury securities at June 30 and effectively no conventional debt burden. Capital expenditure is tiny relative to revenue because the company is a software business that uses third-party cloud infrastructure rather than owning a hyperscale data-center estate. H1 capex was only about 22 million USD.
My qualitative portrait is high-quality compounding growth. The “high-quality” part comes from the combination of 85% gross margin, 47% GAAP operating margin, strong cash conversion, a net-cash balance sheet and accelerating rather than decelerating growth. “Compounding” is still an assumption about the future rather than a fact: Palantir has to prove that 2025–2026 is the beginning of a durable application-software franchise rather than an unusually strong phase in the AI adoption cycle.
The decisive observation from this re-research differs from the old one. The gap between business quality and price is still the dominant security-level issue, but the gap has narrowed for the right reason. Palantir’s business performance moved much more than its earnings multiple. That prior “price above even the bull case” framing is now too harsh. A more accurate framing is: the operating company has caught up enough that today’s price can be defended by a genuinely optimistic scenario, while a merely excellent base-case outcome still produces a value substantially below the market price.
Vertical History and Financial Narrative
Palantir began in 2003 around a specific institutional problem rather than a generic enterprise-software opportunity: intelligence analysts needed to combine fragmented data without stripping away the permissioning, provenance and human judgment required in sensitive investigations. The formal founder group in Palantir’s SEC materials is Alexander Karp, Stephen Cohen and Peter Thiel. Karp has been chief executive since 2005, Cohen remains president, and Thiel has chaired the board since the company’s early years.
That origin matters because it still shapes the product. Gotham was built for defense, intelligence and investigative use cases where data is messy, permissions are complex and the software must interact with a real operational decision. Palantir then carried the same architecture into commercial enterprises through Foundry. Apollo became the deployment and software-management layer that lets Palantir run across heterogeneous infrastructure; AIP later put large language models and other AI models inside the data, permissioning and operational framework. Palantir’s current filings describe revenue economically rather than by those four brands: customers pay for Palantir Cloud subscriptions, on-premises software subscriptions with ongoing operations and maintenance, and professional services.
This structure explains why the company was hard to categorize for most of its private life. It looked partly like enterprise software, partly like a system integrator and partly like a government contractor. The original implementation model required engineers close to the customer, often working through data-modeling and workflow problems that packaged software vendors preferred to leave to integrators. That made deployments expensive to acquire but also taught Palantir how to turn software into a customer’s operating layer. Its own early filings described an “Acquire, Expand, Scale” model in which initial customers could be contribution-loss-making before turning profitable as deployment broadened.
The first durable stage, from 2003 through much of the 2010s, was product validation inside difficult environments. Palantir did not optimize first for low-touch SaaS distribution. It optimized for solving problems that ordinary database, visualization and consulting stacks struggled to integrate. The competitive set was diffuse from the beginning: enterprise software vendors, government contractors, system integrators and customers’ own internal development teams. Palantir’s S-1 explicitly warned that larger rivals could bundle adjacent functionality, sell at zero or negative margins and use broader customer relationships to block Palantir even where its own product performed better. That is still one of the most relevant competitive disclosures in the prospectus six years later.
The second stage was the migration from a predominantly government identity toward a broader enterprise platform. Foundry became the commercial expression of the same architecture, and the economics gradually became more standardized. Revenue rose from 742.6 million USD in 2019 to 1.093 billion in 2020, with government revenue up 77% and commercial revenue up 22%. Government grew much faster at that moment, which is why “Palantir became a commercial AI company” is an incomplete retelling of its history. Government has repeatedly financed, validated and hardened the underlying product.
The September 30, 2020 listing was unusual. Palantir used a direct listing rather than a conventional IPO. It did not sell newly issued shares to raise capital through an underwritten offering; existing holders obtained public liquidity and the exchange established a reference price of 7.25 USD. The stock opened around 10 USD and closed its first day at 9.50 USD. That opening implied an equity value around the low-20-billion-dollar area, depending on which share basis was used.
The direct-listing accounting made SBC unusually visible. In 2020 Palantir recognized 940 million USD of RSU expense associated with awards whose performance condition was satisfied by the listing; combined compensation charges were large enough that the GAAP operating loss looked radically different from the underlying contribution economics. This was not purely a one-time story, because equity compensation remained structurally significant afterward, but 2020 itself was unquestionably distorted by listing-triggered expense.
The 2020–2022 public-market stage then exposed the weaknesses of the original investment narrative. Revenue grew from 1.093 billion USD in 2020 to 1.906 billion in 2022, but annual growth decelerated from 47% to 24%. Palantir was still reporting GAAP losses, interest rates were rising, and the market stopped paying venture-style multiples for long-duration software. Operating cash flow remained positive, but it was only 224 million USD in 2022. The business itself was not collapsing; the combination of slowing growth, losses, SBC and a sharply higher discount rate destroyed the old valuation center.
The third and more consequential turn began in 2023. Palantir produced its first full year of GAAP profitability: revenue reached 2.225 billion USD, GAAP operating income 120 million USD and common-stockholder net income about 210 million USD. Operating cash flow reached 712 million USD. Revenue growth was only about 17%, so 2023 did not yet look like hypergrowth. What changed was proof that the underlying software economics could support GAAP profitability at scale.
AIP, introduced in mid-2023, then altered the growth path. Palantir positioned AIP as the layer connecting enterprise data and operational workflows to large language models while preserving permissions and controls. Early AIPCon events featured customers such as Cardinal Health, Lockheed Martin, PG&E, Siemens Healthineers and others showing applications rather than merely model demonstrations. AIP was as much a distribution story as a technology one: generative AI gave senior management teams a reason to revisit data projects that had previously stalled in long transformation programs.
The financial turn became visible in 2024 and overwhelming in 2025. Revenue advanced from 2.225 billion USD in 2023 to 2.866 billion in 2024 and 4.475 billion in 2025. GAAP operating income went from 120 million to 310 million to 1.414 billion. Gross margin stayed around 80% or better while operating expenses grew far more slowly than revenue. Sales and marketing declined from 34% of revenue in 2023 to 23% in 2025; R&D fell from 18% to 12%; G&A from 24% to 15%. Palantir did not manufacture the margin expansion through a lower gross-margin services mix. Gross margin itself improved from 81% in 2023 to 82% in 2025.
The November 2024 move from the NYSE to Nasdaq mattered mostly to market structure rather than business economics. Palantir announced that trading would move on November 26, 2024 and said it expected to meet Nasdaq-100 eligibility requirements. The listing venue did not create revenue, but it reinforced Palantir’s positioning in capital markets as a large-cap technology platform rather than a hybrid government contractor.
The fourth stage, from 2025 into 2026, is best described as operating leverage colliding with AI demand. The numbers have moved too far to call it merely a narrative re-rating.

The business reason behind the table outweighs the percentages. Palantir has converted a labor-intensive-looking deployment model into software operating leverage. Cost of revenue still includes deployment personnel, subcontractors, cloud hosting, hardware and field-service representatives, and Palantir often incurs pilot and bootcamp costs before a customer scales. Yet the marginal revenue from an expanded deployment increasingly rides on software already built. Q2 2026 gross margin reached approximately 85%, while sales and marketing, R&D and G&A were roughly 18%, 10% and 10% of revenue respectively.
Cash conversion has strengthened alongside GAAP earnings. Operating cash flow was 712 million USD in 2023, 1.154 billion in 2024 and 2.134 billion in 2025. 2025 capex was only 33.9 million USD, producing conventional FCF of approximately 2.101 billion USD. H1 2026 already generated about 2.115 billion of operating cash flow on only 22 million of capex.
A five-year operating-cash-flow/net-income ratio needs interpretation rather than celebration. Palantir had GAAP losses in 2021–2022, followed by rapidly growing profits from 2023 onward, so simply dividing five-year aggregate OCF by aggregate net income produces a ratio above 3x that is economically misleading. Much of the reason cash flow exceeded accounting earnings was the non-cash add-back of SBC. Over the profitable 2023–2025 period, aggregate OCF was about 4.0 billion USD against roughly 2.32 billion of GAAP net income, about 1.7x. For the latest twelve months that gap has narrowed sharply: my reconstruction gives roughly 3.40 billion of OCF against 3.02 billion of common net income, around 1.13x.
The balance sheet has moved in the opposite direction from most high-growth firms that finance expansion with debt. Palantir reported about 7.2 billion USD of principal liquidity at the end of 2025 and about 9.2 billion by June 2026. The 2025 filing reported no outstanding debt and an undrawn revolving facility. At current scale, the company can fund sales expansion and R&D internally without using the balance sheet as a growth lever.
Returns on capital are becoming economically meaningful, but conventional ROIC is awkward because Palantir carries sizeable excess cash and historically expensed most software R&D rather than capitalizing an internally generated technology asset. The cleaner observation is incremental margin: between 2024 and 2025, revenue rose about 1.61 billion USD while GAAP operating income rose about 1.10 billion. That is close to 69 cents of incremental operating income per incremental revenue dollar. The rate is unlikely to persist indefinitely, but it proves that the old customer-acquisition model can scale very differently once accounts mature.
SBC tells the other side of that story. Palantir’s 2025 GAAP operating margin was about 32%; its adjusted operating margin, after excluding 684 million USD of SBC and 156 million of related employer payroll taxes, was 50%. In Q2 2026, GAAP operating margin was 47% and adjusted margin 62%. Those are both exceptional, but the 15-point difference is economically real. Calling 62% the recurring shareholder margin without charging the employee compensation required to produce it overstates owner economics.
Dilution is no longer running at the old rate. Diluted weighted-average shares climbed from about 2.298 billion in 2023 to 2.451 billion in 2024 and 2.565 billion in 2025. Q2 2026 was about 2.569 billion versus 2.563 billion one year earlier. SBC expense still increased 66% year over year in Q2 to 265 million USD, but revenue increased 93%. The cost is shrinking as a percentage of revenue and the current-year dilution signal is much less alarming than the historical one.
Governance has not similarly normalized. Palantir retains Class A, B and F common shares. The Founder Voting Trust established by Karp, Cohen and Thiel can give the founders control of up to 49.999999% of voting power as long as specified ownership thresholds remain satisfied; at March 31, 2026 the relevant minimum threshold was 100 million equity securities. Economic ownership and voting control are structurally separated.
That governance structure is easiest to tolerate while execution is exceptional. It would become much more consequential if capital allocation, executive compensation or strategic decisions deteriorated, because outside holders have limited ability to force change. The same long founder tenure that supports the continuity of Palantir’s product and government strategy also entrenches the people making those decisions.
Business Model, Industry and Horizontal Analysis
Palantir’s four platform names should not be mistaken for four disclosed reporting businesses. Gotham, Foundry, Apollo and AIP describe products and technical layers; the company reports two operating segments, government and commercial. It does not disclose product-level AIP revenue, Gotham margins or Foundry profitability. Any attempt to assign precise revenue to those brands would be speculation.
The economic model is subscription software with substantial implementation content. Palantir Cloud revenue is generally recognized ratably over the contract term. On-premises software and required operations-and-maintenance services are treated as a combined performance obligation and also recognized over time. Professional services support implementation, UI configuration, training and ontology/data modeling.
In 2025 government revenue was 2.402 billion USD, up 53%, while commercial revenue was 2.073 billion, up 60%. H1 2026 government revenue was about 1.848 billion and commercial revenue 1.720 billion, with growth of 78% and 103%, respectively. The company has not escaped government concentration by shrinking government; commercial is catching up while government itself is accelerating.

Customer count is growing, individual customers are expanding rapidly, and the cost to serve incremental use is not keeping pace with revenue. At Q2 Palantir had 1,049 customers versus 849 a year earlier. Revenue grew nearly four times as fast as customer count. U.S. commercial TCV grew 153% and remaining deal value 124%. That pattern is consistent with a land-and-expand model reaching larger deployment sizes rather than one depending primarily on continual logo acquisition.
The government machine has a different rhythm. Contracts often last one to five years, can depend on appropriations and procurement schedules, and may include termination-for-convenience clauses. A headline ceiling does not behave like a SaaS backlog. Palantir’s Army enterprise agreement can support very large future task orders, and the Department of Defense has expanded Maven-related work, but realized revenue still depends on funded orders and program continuation.
The cost structure explains the unusual margin progression. Personnel and engineering are the largest fixed or semi-fixed inputs. Cloud hosting, subcontractors, deployment staff, hardware and sales commissions vary more directly with activity. Palantir also spends on pilots and bootcamps before the associated account necessarily generates much revenue. As deployment becomes standardized, the initial cost of opening an account can be amortized over a much larger revenue base.
Palantir does not require semiconductor-style or hyperscaler-style capital expenditure to preserve its competitive position. Its essential reinvestment is R&D and employee compensation. That distinction matters for owner earnings: reported capex is so small that a conventional FCF calculation makes the business look almost frictionless, while the true economic reinvestment burden partly sits in R&D expense and SBC. R&D was 558 million USD in 2025 and continues to rise in dollars even as it falls as a percentage of revenue.
Moat verdict: the strongest moat is the combination of switching costs, operational integration, security/permission architecture and accumulated deployment know-how. The weakest commonly claimed moat is network effects. Customers do not become more valuable merely because another enterprise uses Palantir, and customer data are not pooled into a consumer-style network. The product gets harder to remove because it becomes embedded in data models, permissions, workflows and operational decisions.
The government version of that moat is particularly strong when software becomes part of mission planning or intelligence workflows. Replacing a vendor means more than changing a database. It can require data re-integration, new authorizations, retraining and procurement. The commercial equivalent is the ontology and application layer that maps an enterprise’s data to actual objects, decisions and actions. Those switching costs are real once a deployment reaches production, but the company’s own contracts are frequently non-exclusive, so the moat is not contractual captivity.
AIP strengthens this moat primarily by increasing the usefulness of the installed data/permission architecture. Foundation models themselves are not Palantir’s proprietary advantage. The company sits above them, connecting models to controlled enterprise context and to actions. Falling model prices can help Palantir by making AI inference cheaper. The opposite risk is that hyperscalers and model vendors move upward into workflow orchestration and governance faster than Palantir moves outward into distribution.
The industry should accordingly be viewed as several overlapping profit pools rather than a single TAM. Palantir competes for enterprise data-platform spending, AI application spending, operational software budgets, defense mission systems and government IT modernization. The categories overlap enough that a single market-size number gives false precision. The scale of adjacent businesses shows the opportunity: Microsoft’s fiscal-2026 revenue reached 331.8 billion USD, while its AI business had already exceeded a 37 billion USD annual revenue run rate earlier in the fiscal year; Snowflake’s latest quarterly product revenue was about 1.49 billion and grew 37%.
Technology iteration, government procurement and interest rates are the relevant cycles. Palantir is much less exposed to an inventory cycle than semiconductors and less directly exposed to advertising or consumer demand than internet platforms. Enterprise AI budgets can nevertheless be deferred if pilots do not deliver measurable returns, while government awards can shift between quarters based on appropriations and procurement decisions. At the stock level, the rate cycle matters disproportionately because so much of the market value depends on earnings many years in the future.
Horizontally, there is no perfect public comparable. Snowflake is the closest commercial data-platform reference, and ServiceNow a useful application/workflow reference. Booz Allen Hamilton shows the economics and valuation of deep U.S. government relationships without Palantir’s software margins. Microsoft is the most important indirect competitive benchmark because its cloud, data and AI distribution can be bundled into customer estates that already run Microsoft software.

Snowflake became the neutral data-cloud company. Customers choose it when they want large-scale data warehousing, analytics and increasingly AI workloads across an ecosystem of tools. Its 126% net revenue retention as of July 2026 shows strong expansion, but 37% product growth is less than half Palantir’s current overall growth, and Snowflake remains GAAP loss-making on the market-data P/E measure. Its advantage is a large developer and data ecosystem; Palantir’s advantage is moving beyond the data plane into operational decisions and highly customized workflows.
ServiceNow became the enterprise workflow system. It has standardized IT, employee and customer workflows across a very large installed base and is embedding AI into those workflows. Q2 subscription revenue grew about 23% in constant currency. The commercial threat to Palantir is straightforward: for workflows that fit ServiceNow’s standardized modules, a customer may prefer extending an existing enterprise platform over adopting a new operational stack. Palantir is more compelling when the data model and operating problem are unusual enough that standard workflow software reaches its limits.
Booz Allen became the government technology-services incumbent rather than a software platform. Its advantage is people, agency relationships, domain expertise and procurement familiarity. Its 11x trailing P/E compared with Palantir’s roughly 149x shows why software economics matter so much: the market pays little for labor-based government revenue relative to scalable proprietary software. But Booz Allen also illustrates a threat. Agencies do not have to choose a single platform vendor; integrators can assemble technologies from multiple suppliers and may resist handing the control plane of a program to Palantir.
Microsoft is the distribution threat. Fiscal-2026 revenue grew 18% to 331.8 billion USD, GAAP operating income was 155.2 billion, and the company traded at about 30x trailing earnings on September 4. Microsoft can subsidize AI functionality through Azure, Microsoft 365, Fabric and its broader enterprise relationship. Palantir has to keep proving that the operational performance and time-to-value of its platform are worth buying separately rather than accepting a bundled solution.
The moat is strongest where the problem is expensive enough that a customer values outcome over seat price: military command, supply-chain optimization, industrial scheduling, healthcare operations or enterprise-wide data coordination. It is weaker in generic analytics and commodity AI interfaces. Palantir itself has warned since the direct-listing prospectus that much larger competitors can use product bundling, broader relationships and even zero-margin pricing. The risk was disclosed before generative AI; generative AI has made it more immediate.
Policy creates both demand and constraint. Palantir’s alignment with U.S. and allied defense priorities can create work that ordinary commercial software vendors cannot easily contest. The Maven software modification announced by the Department of Defense in 2025 was worth roughly 795 million USD, and other multi-year Army and special-operations vehicles reinforce that position.
The same alignment narrows the addressable political geography and makes reputation part of procurement. The June 2026 U.K. parliamentary criticism, the blocked Metropolitan Police procurement and earlier NHS controversy show that sovereignty cuts both ways. Governments want sovereign control over sensitive data, but some governments also want less dependence on one U.S. supplier.
Current Fundamentals and Capital-Market Narrative
The last four quarters show an unusual pattern for a company already valued in the hundreds of billions: growth accelerated each quarter.

The Q1 and Q2 data are directly reported by Palantir; Q3/Q4 revenue is consistent with the FY2025 reported total and quarterly disclosures.
The business is accelerating at the same time that its incremental costs are falling as a percentage of revenue. That combination matters more than the headline 93%. A company can grow rapidly by spending even faster. Palantir’s Q2 sales-and-marketing, R&D and G&A expense ratios were approximately 18%, 10% and 10%, while gross margin was roughly 85%. GAAP operating income reached 912 million USD and adjusted operating income 1.194 billion.
Q2 also reset the near-term expectation bar. At the May Q1 report, management expected Q2 revenue of only 1.797–1.801 billion USD. Actual revenue exceeded that range by roughly 134–138 million. FY2026 guidance then rose to 8.150–8.158 billion USD, versus 7.650–7.662 billion previously.
The new guide implies H2 revenue of roughly 4.59 billion USD after H1’s 3.568 billion. With Q3 guided at 2.160–2.164 billion, the full-year range mechanically implies Q4 revenue around 2.42 billion if Q3 lands near midpoint. The market will be watching whether sequential growth remains near double digits even from a much larger base. These are calculations from company guidance, not management forecasts for Q4.
Analyst estimates moved upward after the print. A FactSet compilation in early September put 2027 revenue around 12.222 billion USD and EPS around 2.282 USD, while Zacks reported that consensus earnings estimates had risen by roughly 8% over the preceding month. The revenue estimate implies almost 50% growth even after the 82% growth embedded in 2026 guidance.

Price attribution: the stock’s 29% net rise from May 18 to September 4 was driven principally by earnings growth, but the path was dominated by multiple shocks around that earnings trend.
The June drawdown happened without a company earnings miss. Shares fell for seven straight sessions and reached a 106.37 USD intraday 52-week low on June 25. The absence of a new quarterly failure makes valuation compression, software-sector risk aversion and competitive/narrative concerns more credible explanations than deteriorating reported fundamentals. Contemporaneous reporting described June as Palantir’s worst month in years even while AI demand remained strong.
The late-June/early-July rebound was partly technical and partly narrative. By July 8 the stock had risen about 25% over seven sessions, helped by a Nvidia-related sovereign-AI partnership narrative and an analyst upgrade; the rally stopped after reporting highlighted possible political scrutiny of U.S. government contracts. The July 8 close was 132.22 USD, down 1.6% that day.
The truly fundamental inflection was August 4. Palantir reported Q2 after the August 3 close, exceeded consensus and its own guidance, and raised its full-year forecast. The stock jumped nearly 30% the next session, its strongest one-day move in years. August as a whole then produced a gain of more than 50%, while broader software indices also rallied about 15–16%. That means the August move contained both a company-specific earnings reset and a sector-level restoration of software multiples.
Government awards were supportive but secondary to the earnings print. In early September, for example, Palantir and Anduril received a roughly 192 million USD Army award connected with TITAN vehicles. That matters operationally, but a contract of that size cannot by itself explain tens of billions of dollars of daily market-cap movement.
The first week of September showed the duration risk again. Reporting linked Palantir’s decline to rising global yields and renewed competitive concern after Alphabet pushed further into government/cybersecurity AI. On September 4 the strong U.S. jobs report lifted Treasury yields and pressured equities broadly. Palantir’s valuation made it more rate-sensitive than the market.
Insider selling exists but does not explain the major inflections I can verify. Director Alexander Moore, for example, sold 16,000 shares in August under a Rule 10b5-1 plan established the prior December. Against a company with more than 400 billion USD of basic market value, that transaction is economically tiny. I found insufficient reliable evidence to attribute the May-to-September swing primarily to insider sales.
The same caution applies to a retail/options explanation. Palantir is heavily traded and attracts substantial options activity, so derivatives can amplify individual sessions, but the evidence reviewed does not allow a defensible decomposition of how many percentage points of the August move came from gamma hedging or retail flow. Short interest was only about 3.1% of float in mid-August, making a classic short squeeze a weak explanation for the month-long move.
There was also no new exchange-listing event in this May to September window comparable with the 2024 Nasdaq transfer. Index or passive flows should be treated as background liquidity rather than the core causal driver of this period.
The most useful return decomposition is earnings versus P/E. Using Palantir’s reported common net income and diluted shares, trailing diluted EPS around May 18 was approximately 0.887 USD. It is about 1.174 USD now. EPS rose about 32.3%; the stock rose 29.0%; trailing P/E declined roughly 2.5%, from about 152x to about 148x. Algebraically:
Price return ≈ (1 + EPS growth) × (1 + P/E change) − 1
≈ 1.323 × 0.975 − 1 = 29.0%
That inference is important. The market did not simply become 29% more euphoric; it received 32% more trailing earnings per diluted share and paid a slightly lower multiple for each dollar.
That does not make the valuation cheap. It means the right bear argument must now attack the durability of the denominator rather than pretending the entire price move was multiple expansion.
The bull case rests on a visible flywheel. U.S. commercial is scaling faster than customer count, contract value is accelerating, gross margins remain high, expenses are falling as a percentage of sales, and the government business is accelerating at the same time. If this persists, the company can grow into multiples that look absurd on trailing numbers.
The bear case attacks duration. U.S. commercial growth of 149% is almost impossible to maintain indefinitely. International revenue is still only around one-fifth of H1 revenue, so the current surge is unusually U.S.-concentrated. Large government programs can be delayed or politicized. Enterprise competitors can bundle AI and data tools into existing estates. And a stock on roughly 149x trailing earnings and more than 50x FY2026 EV/sales can fall substantially even if the company remains profitable and growing.
Valuation, Risks, Catalysts and Tracking
Valuation must begin with cash-flow passthrough because Palantir’s non-GAAP presentation is unusually generous to SBC.
For the latest twelve months, my reconstruction from the FY2025 and H1 2026 filings gives approximately 6.156 billion USD of revenue, 3.017 billion of common-stockholder net income, 3.400 billion of operating cash flow and only about 42 million of capex. That puts conventional FCF at roughly 3.358 billion USD. TTM SBC is approximately 836 million. Subtracting that compensation cost from conventional FCF produces approximately 2.523 billion USD of SBC-adjusted owner earnings.
Palantir does not disclose maintenance versus growth capex. Given how small total capex is, I treat 100% of reported capex as maintenance capex rather than attempting to manufacture a split. That is conservative and makes the estimate reproducible. The real reinvestment debate is employee/R&D spending, not servers and factories.

These multiples are my calculations from the September 4 price, Palantir’s latest share count, balance-sheet cash and reported cash-flow data. The convention matters: headline market cap uses actual shares outstanding, while the per-share P/E and the fully diluted economic analysis incorporate potential/current dilution.
The owner-earnings adjustment makes Palantir approximately 19% more expensive than headline P/E suggests: roughly 178x versus 149x. Against conventional P/FCF the difference is larger, around 34%, because cash flow adds SBC back while an owner cannot pretend employee equity is free. My own 30% threshold for defaulting to owner earnings is crossed when FCF is the starting metric, although the gap versus GAAP P/E itself is under 30%. I use owner earnings anyway because it is the cleaner economic basis for this company.
This methodology is deliberately harsher than Palantir’s adjusted FCF. The company’s adjusted FCF starts with operating cash flow, subtracts capex and then adds back employer payroll taxes associated with SBC. I go the other direction: conventional FCF less the economic value of SBC.
Historically, the current valuation is below the late-2025 extreme but still in Palantir’s upper valuation regime. MarketWatch reports that forward P/E exceeded 230x at the 2025 peak and is now around the low-80s on consensus forward earnings. Price/sales exceeded 100x around the 2025/early-2026 extreme; the current fully diluted price/sales multiple is roughly 73x against that 100x-plus peak but remains extraordinary by software standards.
The historical center did shift for a legitimate reason. Palantir went from 17% growth and 5% GAAP operating margin in 2023 to 56% growth and 32% operating margin in 2025, then to 93% growth and 47% operating margin in Q2 2026. A permanently higher multiple than the 2022–2023 regime is economically defensible. The unresolved issue is how much higher.
Peer comparison does not rescue the current valuation. Microsoft trades around 30x trailing P/E, ServiceNow around 87x, Booz Allen about 11x and Snowflake remains GAAP loss-making. Palantir has far higher growth than all of those public comparables, so a premium is justified. The premium is so large that relative valuation cannot establish cheapness; absolute cash-flow math has to carry the conclusion.
Valuation conclusion: the business has grown into much of the old valuation gap, but the current stock still capitalizes a near-optimistic long-term outcome.
The DCF below is based on SBC-adjusted owner earnings to equity. I add approximately 9.2 billion USD of excess liquidity, start from the 8.154 billion USD FY2026 revenue guide, treat SBC as an economic compensation expense, and use the current roughly 2.569 billion diluted share count. I also allow 0.5–1.0% annual residual net dilution. That last step is intentionally conservative: current dilution has slowed sharply, and subtracting SBC while also allowing share creep penalizes shareholders twice to a limited degree. I prefer that error direction to assuming grants are costless.

The conservative scenario is not a recession case. It still assumes nearly 27% annual revenue growth through 2031 after an 82% 2026 growth year, and a long-run owner-earnings margin above 40%. The base case is more demanding: 2031 revenue of nearly 37 billion USD would be over eight times 2025 revenue, and the terminal owner-earnings margin would reach 50%. The optimistic case effectively asks Palantir to become one of the largest and most profitable enterprise software businesses in the world while retaining extraordinary growth for years.
This is valuation-scenario analysis within a research framework, not investment advice.
The 2027 consensus context is useful. FactSet’s roughly 12.22 billion USD revenue estimate implies about 50% growth. My conservative case starts near that level; my base and optimistic cases are above it. The wide discount between current price and base DCF does not arise because the model assumes an immediate collapse. It arises because even 50–60% near-term growth eventually has to decay and because future cash flows discounted at 9–10% are worth much less today than an undiscounted revenue-growth narrative suggests.
The fragile assumption is duration. Cut the base-case annual revenue-growth assumptions to 70% of their modeled rates while leaving the margin structure unchanged, and the base DCF falls from about 110 USD to roughly 68 USD per share. That is approximately a 38% reduction in intrinsic value from changing one family of assumptions. The risk is not that Palantir suddenly becomes unprofitable. The risk is that very good growth replaces extraordinary growth several years earlier than the current price assumes.
The owner-earnings yield makes the same point without a DCF. At roughly 178x trailing owner earnings, the yield is about 0.56%. If earnings were completely flat for three years and the market somehow kept the same multiple, the stock would generate no price appreciation and no dividend; the underlying owner-earnings yield would remain far below the roughly 4.8% area recently reached by the U.S. 10-year Treasury. There is no margin of safety at this buy price.
Margin-of-safety verdict: none.
This is currently a “good company, bad price” case under conservative and base assumptions. It is materially less extreme than it was in May because the optimistic intrinsic-value case has caught up to the share price. Yet a buyer who requires a conventional margin of safety is still being asked to wait.
The permanent-loss risks are concentrated enough to be stated plainly.
Valuation-duration risk has high probability and high impact. The observable indicator is forward P/E or EV/sales remaining extremely high while revenue growth decelerates. A move from roughly 80x forward earnings toward 40x would halve the stock before allowing for earnings growth. Rising long-term yields accelerate that transmission because they raise the return available from bonds and reduce the present value of distant software cash flows. Early September already supplied a small-scale example.
Commercial-growth durability has medium probability and high impact. U.S. commercial growth of 149% creates a mathematically brutal comparison base. I would become concerned if it fell below 70% before the end of 2027 without an offsetting international acceleration, or if U.S. commercial remaining deal value slowed below roughly 50%. The transmission is from weaker bookings to lower forward revenue estimates, then lower terminal-margin confidence, then simultaneous EPS and multiple compression.
Government concentration has medium probability and high impact. H1 revenue is still 52% government, and 80% of total company revenue is U.S.-based. Large programs can be delayed through appropriations, protests, recompetes or termination-for-convenience provisions. The observable signals are U.S. government growth, funded task orders under headline contract vehicles and major renewal decisions. A framework ceiling should never be entered into a valuation as guaranteed backlog.
Political and procurement sensitivity is medium probability and medium-to-high impact. The U.K. parliamentary criticism and blocked London police procurement show a pathway in which controversy about data sovereignty, surveillance or dependence on a U.S. vendor limits international government penetration. In the U.S., the political risk is less about one election and more about whether Palantir becomes identified closely enough with particular policy programs that procurement decisions become partisan targets.
Competitive bundling has medium probability and high long-run impact. Microsoft, Google, Snowflake, ServiceNow and model vendors do not have to replicate every Palantir feature. They need only make enough functionality “good enough” inside products customers already own. Palantir’s own prospectus explicitly identified bundling and zero-margin competitive behavior as risks. The observable signal would be weaker commercial TCV, longer sales cycles, lower customer expansion or rising sales expense required to defend growth.
SBC/dilution risk has medium probability but is currently improving. The observable numbers are SBC/revenue and diluted share growth. H1 SBC at 13.1% of revenue is still high but far better than 24.1% in 2024, and Q2 diluted shares were almost flat year over year. The risk re-escalates if SBC/revenue returns above 18% while fully diluted shares grow more than about 2% annually.
Positive catalysts over the next year are unusually measurable. A Q3 print above the 2.164 billion USD high end, another FY2026 guidance raise, U.S. commercial growth remaining above 100%, continued triple-digit commercial contract-value growth, funded defense task orders and further GAAP margin expansion would all make the base valuation assumptions less aggressive. Falling long-term yields would raise the present value of the same cash-flow path without changing the business.
Negative catalysts are the mirror image but need less operational deterioration than many holders may expect. Simply meeting rather than beating Q3 guidance could matter if investors have come to expect repeated 5–8% revenue upside. A sharp drop in commercial TCV growth, government procurement delays, an international contract cancellation, rising SBC dilution or another move toward 5% long-term Treasury yields could reduce the multiple before GAAP earnings decline.

The first four indicators answer whether the demand curve is changing. Margins and SBC answer whether shareholders are receiving the economics of that growth, and diluted shares show whether the accounting improvement is reaching each share. Forward P/E and Treasury yields show whether the same operating result can support the same market value. The next earnings print matters because current expectations already assume another large quarter.
Cross-Synthesis, Final Conclusion, Research Uncertainties and Sources
Looking vertically, Palantir has proven a capability that is rarer than “building AI.” It has repeatedly taken difficult, fragmented data environments and turned them into operational software that customers are willing to expand. The proof is not a product demo but the transition from a company with 1.093 billion USD of 2020 revenue and a deeply costly implementation model to one guiding above 8.15 billion USD six years later, with a 47% GAAP operating margin in the latest quarter.
The path was not linear. Palantir’s first public-market boom priced the company as if rapid growth would continue automatically. By 2022 growth had slowed to 24%, GAAP losses remained, SBC was substantial and rates were rising. The share-price collapse that followed was a rational repricing of duration. Management then proved that the underlying business had operating leverage that the 2020–2022 income statement obscured.
AIP then supplied a distribution catalyst at exactly the moment generative AI pushed executives to fund enterprise AI projects. Palantir did not create the foundation-model boom; it benefited from an era tailwind. Management’s contribution was having a production-oriented data, permission and workflow layer ready when that tailwind arrived. The distinction is worth holding onto, because foundation models will continue to change rapidly, while the harder-to-copy asset is the installed operational architecture around them.
The 2025–2026 results suggest management execution rather than pure luck. Revenue growth did not simply accelerate. Gross margin held above 80%, expense ratios collapsed, GAAP profitability expanded and cash conversion remained strong. A company riding a temporary demand spike can show rapid revenue with weak economics. Palantir is showing rapid revenue and stronger economics simultaneously.
Horizontally, its advantage is not that Snowflake, ServiceNow or Microsoft are technologically incapable. Each became optimized around a different customer promise. Snowflake became the neutral data cloud, ServiceNow the standardized workflow layer, Microsoft the integrated enterprise stack, Booz Allen the labor-and-domain-heavy government technology partner. Palantir chose the hardest operational layer: data integration plus permissions plus workflows plus deployment in places where failure has a tangible operational cost. That niche carries more implementation friction but creates deeper switching costs once installed.
That positioning also defines the weakness. Large vendors do not need to eliminate Palantir everywhere. Commercial buyers can increasingly assemble data infrastructure, models, agents and workflows from existing vendors. When the problem is generic, Microsoft or ServiceNow can win through bundling. When it is data-intensive but remains primarily analytical, Snowflake can be enough. Palantir needs customer problems to be sufficiently complicated and important that the extra platform is worth adopting.
Government strengthens the moat but raises the political beta. More than half of H1 2026 revenue still came from government. U.S. defense and intelligence relationships are hard-earned and difficult for a new entrant to reproduce. Yet procurement vehicles, appropriations, political oversight and termination clauses mean those revenues are not equivalent to an irrevocable SaaS subscription. Internationally, political resistance can be explicit.
The central valuation question can now be answered directly. The market is no longer merely rewarding past success. It is pre-spending a large amount of future success. At roughly 149x trailing diluted earnings, about 133x conventional TTM FCF and roughly 178x SBC-adjusted owner earnings, the stock price assumes that current exceptional performance has unusually long duration. Even management’s 82% FY2026 revenue guide is not enough by itself; the valuation depends on what happens after the hypergrowth year.
This is exactly where my re-research diverges from the old report in degree while partially agreeing in direction. The prior valuation bands of 18–30 / 35–60 / 75–110 USD are too low relative to what Palantir has since proved. Q2 revenue exceeded the previous guide materially, FY guidance rose about 6.5% in one quarter, U.S. commercial growth accelerated to 149%, U.S. government growth reached 90%, and GAAP operating margin approached 50%. My independent DCF values of roughly 51 / 110 / 172 USD come out materially higher.
The difference is most pronounced in the optimistic case. I can now construct a coherent, auditable path to a present value around the current stock price. It requires 2026–2031 revenue CAGR near 40%, 2031 revenue around 43.5 billion USD, a long-run owner-earnings margin around 52%, a 9% discount rate and very low future dilution. Those are extreme assumptions, but they are no longer absurd given the latest trajectory.
The old central claim nevertheless survives in a weaker form. The base value of roughly 110 USD is about 37% below the market. The conservative value around 51 USD sits roughly 70% below the market, and the bullish value around 172 USD is essentially equal to the September 4 close. A buyer receives an attractive return only if reality develops at least as well as my optimistic case or if the market is willing to maintain an even richer terminal valuation than the cash-flow assumptions warrant.
The owner-earnings multiple offers a bridge back to the prior research. My independently reconstructed current TTM multiple is about 178x on fully diluted equity value. That happens to be close to the prior report’s stated 176x despite the share price being much higher. The similarity is an outcome, not an input: Palantir’s owner earnings have grown almost fast enough to offset the share-price increase. This is another reason the correct refresh is “fundamentals have caught up materially,” rather than “the bubble simply inflated further.”
For the next year, the critical variable is the rate of deceleration. A Q3 revenue result comfortably above 2.164 billion USD and another guide increase would extend the sequence of estimate resets. The market will care more about U.S. commercial growth and contract indicators than an isolated EPS beat because those data determine how long 40–60% forward growth remains plausible.
Over three years, the question becomes whether Palantir turns an American AI surge into a broader enterprise franchise. Current U.S. concentration is approximately 80%. Sustaining a 30–40% multiyear revenue CAGR will become progressively harder if international commercial and government growth cannot carry more of the load.
Over five years, the decisive variable is economic margin after employee compensation. A 50% adjusted operating margin that excludes SBC is much less valuable than a 45–50% owner-earnings margin after paying employees economically. Current trends are moving in the right direction: SBC is falling as a percentage of revenue and diluted shares have nearly stabilized. If that persists, the owner-earnings gap to non-GAAP FCF closes and my base model becomes less demanding.
The market may currently be misjudging two things in opposite directions. Bears who still treat Palantir as the 2021 company are underestimating the structural improvement in distribution, margins and cash generation. Bulls who treat 2026 growth as a durable steady state are underestimating how rapidly a 50–70x sales multiple can compress once revenue growth normalizes.
Bull reasons, condensed to the evidence already developed:
- Q2 revenue growth accelerated to 93% rather than decelerating, while GAAP operating margin reached 47%, a combination that materially raises the company’s long-term earnings ceiling.
- U.S. commercial revenue grew 149%, U.S. commercial TCV 153% and remaining deal value 124%, indicating that growth is supported by forward contract activity rather than only revenue recognition.
- FY2026 revenue guidance was raised by roughly 500 million USD after one quarter, while Q2 beat management’s previous revenue guide by about 7.6%.
- The balance sheet carries about 9.2 billion USD of liquidity, negligible conventional leverage and extremely low capex, limiting financing and capital-intensity risk.
- SBC dilution is finally improving: Q2 diluted shares were roughly flat year over year even though SBC expense dollars rose, while SBC/revenue has fallen sharply from 2024 levels.
Bear reasons:
- At 174.33 USD the shares trade near 149x trailing diluted earnings, roughly 133x conventional FCF and about 178x SBC-adjusted owner earnings, leaving little room for ordinary software-growth normalization.
- My base case already assumes a roughly 35% 2026–2031 revenue CAGR and a 50% long-run owner-earnings margin yet produces only about 110 USD of present value.
- Government remains roughly 52% of H1 revenue, contracts can be terminated for convenience, and international political opposition has already affected procurement.
- Microsoft, Snowflake, ServiceNow and hyperscale/model vendors can bundle increasingly capable AI and data tools, exactly the type of competitive pressure Palantir itself identified in its direct-listing filings.
- The stock remains unusually sensitive to long rates: early-September selling reappeared as bond yields rose despite no new deterioration in reported company fundamentals.
The pre-mortem makes those risks concrete.
One plausible 2027–2029 failure script begins with commercial AI moving from scarcity to abundance. Microsoft, Google, Snowflake and model vendors make agentic data workflows materially easier to deploy inside existing cloud estates. Palantir’s U.S. commercial growth falls from 149% in Q2 2026 to below 50% during 2027 and toward 30% in 2028. Revenue still grows, but GAAP operating margin stalls near 30–35% because Palantir has to increase sales engineering and deployment spending. Consensus forward P/E compresses from roughly 80x to 30x. If 2029 earnings reach only around 3 USD per share under that slower path, a 30x multiple produces a stock around 90 USD, close to a 50% loss from today. This is a scenario, not a forecast.
A second script begins in government procurement. During 2027, funded task orders under large U.S. vehicles arrive more slowly than headline ceilings suggested, while U.K. and European sovereign-AI procurement increasingly favors domestic suppliers. U.S. government growth falls from 90% to low double digits and international government revenue contracts. Commercial still grows around 40%, so Palantir remains a good company, but blended growth drops toward 25–30%. The market stops valuing it as a hypergrowth platform and applies 25–30x owner earnings. A 70–90 USD share price becomes plausible without insolvency, accounting fraud or business collapse. That would be a 48–60% permanent impairment for a holder who bought at 174 USD and waited for the old multiple to return.
Those scripts identify why the max-loss risk is considerably larger than normal share-price volatility. A severe but non-distress fundamental reset can plausibly remove 48–60% of market value because the valuation contains so much duration. The balance sheet makes bankruptcy extraordinarily remote under present facts; it does not protect shareholders from multiple compression.
Two developments would make the business a materially better investment. The first is price: the market could compress while the operating trajectory remains intact. The second is earnings: Palantir could continue beating forecasts long enough that intrinsic value rises toward the market without a large share-price decline. That second path is exactly what happened between May and September 2026.
What would overturn a cautious valuation judgment is measurable. Several more quarters of revenue above current guidance, U.S. commercial remaining above roughly 80–100% growth into a much larger base, international acceleration, SBC/revenue approaching single digits, fully diluted shares remaining essentially flat, and GAAP operating margin sustainably around or above 45% would force a higher long-run owner-earnings assumption.
The opposite triggers would invalidate the fundamental-quality thesis rather than merely the price thesis: U.S. commercial growth below 50–70% much earlier than modeled, GAAP operating margin below 30% for two consecutive quarters, diluted shares resuming growth above 2% annually, a material funded-government backlog deterioration, or evidence that large customers are replacing Palantir with bundled hyperscaler products.
The final research conclusion is more favorable to the company than the May coverage, but not sufficiently favorable to the stock price to erase valuation discipline. Palantir today is one of the rare public software companies where the phrase “AI demand” is supported by reported acceleration in revenue, contract value, GAAP operating profit and cash flow. It has earned a substantially higher intrinsic-value range than the pre-Q2 report allowed. The operating trajectory since May was strong enough that a 29% share-price increase occurred while the trailing P/E slightly contracted.
At 174.33 USD, however, the investor is still paying today for much of the next five years’ likely value creation. My base scenario grows revenue to almost 37 billion USD by 2031 and still produces only low-single-digit annualized shareholder returns from the current price using a 2031 exit-value cross-check. The optimistic path produces roughly a 9% five-year CAGR. That is an uncomfortable asymmetry for a balanced investor: extraordinary execution is required for an ordinary equity return, while merely very good execution can generate a large capital loss.

Research uncertainties remain material. First, Palantir does not disclose separate AIP, Gotham, Foundry and Apollo revenue or product-level gross margin, so the economic contribution of AIP cannot be isolated from commercial/platform expansion.
Second, large government contract ceilings are not guaranteed revenue. Public disclosures often establish maximum procurement capacity without revealing how much will ultimately be funded, competed or exercised. That creates unavoidable uncertainty in translating headline awards into a valuation model.
Third, the company does not split maintenance and growth capex. I treat all reported capex as maintenance, an intentionally conservative simplification. The much larger judgment is the treatment of SBC: subtracting it from FCF and then allowing modest residual dilution is stricter than either pure GAAP or management’s adjusted methodology.
Fourth, forward P/E and consensus estimates move daily. The approximately 76–82x forward-earnings range cited here reflects early-September provider data; the core valuation conclusion relies more heavily on company filings and the owner-earnings DCF than on that consensus multiple.
Fifth, political and sovereign-AI procurement outcomes are inherently difficult to forecast. Palantir’s Western-defense positioning currently creates enormous demand, but the same positioning can constrain international adoption. The U.K. events show that this is already an observed tension, not a hypothetical tail risk.
