The operating numbers are strong. Group margin was 16.4%, held down by Aggregates and corporate costs. The report's caution is that equipment orders, not aftermarket, led the acceleration, growing roughly 16% against 8% for aftermarket, so the fastest-moving part of the business is also the part most exposed to copper prices and project delays.
Cash is the weak spot. First-half operating cash flow fell to EUR 131 million from EUR 283 million even as profit rose, because working capital absorbed EUR 186 million. Trailing free cash flow of about EUR 0.55 a share gives a 3.0% yield, below the roughly 3.6% then available on a Finnish 10-year government bond, and that is before any equity risk premium.
Valuation is the whole argument. At EUR 18.19 the shares carry roughly 30 times trailing earnings and about 17.5 times EV/EBITDA, quality-industrial pricing rather than mining-cycle pricing, and a premium to Weir at about 28 times. The report's conservative fair value is EUR 14.0 and its base case EUR 18.9, so the price already sits at the base case and well above the conservative one. Its margin-of-safety verdict is none, and the ideal buy range is EUR 10.0 to EUR 11.2.
The report grades six risks, and the heaviest are a mining equipment order reversal, an aftermarket that proves less defensive than assumed, and multiple compression, where a de-rating to 20 times earnings with profits unchanged would put the share near EUR 12. Its stance is that existing holders have enough operating evidence to stay invested, while new capital lacks the margin of safety and is better served waiting for a lower price. Scope: general equity research, since no narrower investment mandate was specified. Two horizons are in view, the next 12 months and the next 3–5 years. Risk tolerance is balanced and every figure is in EUR. The investment rating appears only in the final synthesis.
Research summary
Metso is best understood as a large installed-base aftermarket business wrapped around a cyclical mineral-processing equipment franchise. The equipment matters economically because it seeds the installed base. The attractive recurring economics come later, when mines need liners, screening media, pump components, filtration parts, maintenance, upgrades and process support to keep plants running. In H1 2026 Metso generated EUR 2.587 billion of group sales, of which EUR 1.451 billion, or 56.1%, was aftermarket. Minerals is more extreme: EUR 1.260 billion of H1 2026 Minerals aftermarket sales represented about 65% of that segment's EUR 1.945 billion sales. Aggregates sits at the other end, with only about 30% of its H1 2026 sales aftermarket.
That distinction matters more than the usual “mining equipment” label. A greenfield concentrator order can be delayed for years because copper prices, permitting or project financing move against a customer. Once a concentrator is running, abrasive ore does not stop wearing out liners, screens and slurry-handling components merely because the mine owner dislikes the commodity price. Metso therefore runs two demand functions inside one company: project and original-equipment demand that is strongly exposed to mining and construction capex, and an aftermarket stream tied more closely to tonnes processed, equipment utilization and the installed base. The second stream deserves a better valuation than a conventional project contractor; the first prevents Metso from being genuinely defensive. H1 2026 itself shows the duality. Group aftermarket orders grew 8% year on year, while derived equipment orders grew roughly 16%, so the current acceleration is being led by equipment as well as recurring demand.
The latest operating print is genuinely strong. Q2 2026 orders were EUR 1.462 billion, up 18% from Q2 2025; Q2 2026 sales were EUR 1.334 billion, up 6%; and Q2 2026 adjusted EBITA was EUR 221 million, up 21%, with a 16.6% margin versus 14.5% in Q2 2025. The H1 2026 picture runs alongside it: orders of EUR 3.017 billion rose 12% versus H1 2025, sales of EUR 2.587 billion rose 5%, and adjusted EBITA of EUR 424 million rose 13%, taking the H1 2026 margin to 16.4% from 15.2%. The group backlog reached EUR 3.662 billion, 13% higher year on year. Q2 2026 book-to-bill was 1.10; H1 2026 book-to-bill was roughly 1.17.
Minerals is carrying most of that acceleration. H1 2026 Minerals orders rose 14% to EUR 2.244 billion; equipment orders rose 21% and aftermarket orders 10%. H1 2026 Minerals sales rose 6% to EUR 1.945 billion and adjusted EBITA rose 14% to EUR 350 million, giving an 18.0% margin. Aggregates H1 2026 orders rose 6%, sales 2%, and adjusted EBITA 10% to EUR 104 million, with a 16.2% margin. Aggregates' reported aftermarket comparisons are distorted. A January 2026 calculation change moved EUR 19 million of orders and EUR 17 million of sales from aftermarket into equipment and left the comparison period unrestated, so the headline decline in Aggregates aftermarket does not describe underlying demand cleanly.
The order evidence also contains an important clue about where Metso sits in the mining cycle. Q1 2026 included a disclosed EUR 100 million equipment award for the Tía María greenfield copper mine in Peru, and Metso reported that Q1 new equipment orders were flat year on year even with it. Q2 2026 Minerals equipment orders then increased about 50% year on year; management attributed that quarter's strength to grinding and crushing and described activity as broad across commodities, regions and product areas. The inference is that the H1 equipment acceleration came from Q2 rather than from the Peruvian award, which sat inside a flat Q1 equipment comparison.
Customer-side evidence supports a real copper investment cycle, while cautioning against extrapolating an indiscriminate mining boom. BHP spent US$10.3 billion on capital and exploration in FY2026 and now expects about US$11 billion annually over the medium term, with more than half directed to copper growth; it also approved US$0.5 billion of pre-commitment funding for a prospective new Escondida concentrator. Rio Tinto reported 31% H1 2026 growth in copper production at Oyu Tolgoi and continued construction at Simandou. Set against that, the IEA estimates that investment in critical-mineral supply fell 9% in 2025. Metso's market therefore looks more like targeted spending around copper, debottlenecking, brownfield upgrades and high-return projects than a synchronized 2010–12-style mining supercycle.
The structural argument has substance. The IEA says average global copper mine grade has fallen about 40% since 1991, and lower grades mean more rock must be crushed, ground, floated, thickened, filtered and moved to produce the same amount of copper. The agency also estimates a potential 30% copper supply shortfall by 2035 under the current project pipeline, blaming falling grades, capital intensity and long project lead times among other causes. None of that guarantees high margins for equipment suppliers. It does increase the amount of mineral-processing work per unit of metal, and it makes efficiency improvements economically valuable.
The aftermarket story survives a historical stress test, but the word “counter-cyclical” is too generous. During the 2015 mining trough, legacy Metso's mining-equipment sales fell about 40%, while mining-services sales fell only about 2%. In Q1 2016 equipment and project sales were down 47%, yet service sales were still down 8%; full-year 2016 service revenue also declined. Services were therefore dramatically more resilient than original equipment, but miners still cut spares, shutdown work and discretionary maintenance when cash preservation became severe. That is the evidence-based formulation investors should use today: aftermarket is a cycle dampener, not an inverse-cycle hedge.
The business quality has also changed materially since the 2020 combination of Metso Minerals and Outotec. Illustrative combined 2020 sales were about EUR 3.9 billion and adjusted EBITA margin about 11.5%. The subsequent current-entity reported series shows adjusted EBITA margin of 12.9% in 2021, 13.8% in 2022 and 16.5% in 2023 as merger synergies, portfolio exits, pricing and operating execution improved. The 2022 result absorbed a separate EUR 150 million non-recurring charge from winding down Russia, which did not affect adjusted EBITA. Metso finally stopped doing business in Russia in Q1 2023.
Comparison becomes harder after that. In July 2025 Metso reclassified Metals & Chemical Processing into continuing operations. The FY2025 accounts therefore re-present 2024 sales at EUR 5.026 billion and adjusted EBITA at EUR 830 million, whereas Metso's original FY2024 release had reported EUR 4.863 billion of sales and EUR 804 million of adjusted EBITA on the then-current basis. Any chart that simply connects the original 2023 number to the restated 2024 number without explaining the basis is analytically wrong. This report treats 2024 restated, 2025 and 2026 as the comparable current-basis series and treats 2020–23 as a separate historical operating chapter.
Three things are braided into the current market narrative: the copper and ore-grade thesis; the transformation of Metso from a merger story into a higher-margin installed-base service company; and management's new 2028 ambition of at least 7% annual sales growth, adjusted EBITA margin above 18%, net debt/EBITDA below 1.5 and an annual dividend of at least 50% of EPS. At EUR 18.19, investors are already paying for meaningful progress toward those goals.
Cash flow is the principal blemish in the latest results. H1 2026 cash flow from operations before financial items and taxes fell to EUR 285 million from EUR 343 million in H1 2025, despite higher profit. IFRS net cash flow from operating activities was only EUR 131 million versus EUR 283 million, because working capital consumed EUR 186 million. H1 2026 capex was EUR 74 million. On a trailing-12-month reconstruction using FY2025 and H1 2026 cash-flow statements, free cash flow after total capex is about EUR 457 million, roughly EUR 0.55 per share. At EUR 18.19, that is only about a 3.0% trailing FCF yield. The quality of the earnings is better when viewed over five years than the latest half alone, but the working-capital reversal has to arrive if the current valuation is to look comfortable.
Balance-sheet risk is controlled rather than trivial. H1 2026 net debt was EUR 1.214 billion, rolling EBITDA EUR 931 million and net debt/EBITDA 1.3. Metso had EUR 383 million of liquid funds and an undrawn EUR 700 million revolving credit facility; gross debt excluding leases was about EUR 1.479 billion. The leverage ratio sits below management's 1.5 target but leaves less room for a major acquisition or severe working-capital shock than a debt-free balance sheet would.
Capital allocation is becoming more active. Metso acquired the remaining 85% of Swiss Tower Mills Minerals in April 2025, Saimu Technology in July and Q&R Industrial Hoses in October; the 2025 financial statements report combined purchase consideration of EUR 201 million for those acquisitions. In February 2026 it acquired MRA Automation in Australia, with accounting purchase consideration of EUR 32 million, including contingent consideration. Ferrous was sold to SMS group on 5 January 2026, with about 180 employees transferring and no material financial impact expected. On 24 August 2026 Metso agreed to buy Valmet's Flowrox-branded peristaltic hose-pump and progressive-cavity-pump technologies and aftermarket business, with closing expected on 1 October 2026.
One item in the supplied starting brief could not be corroborated: I found no separate U.S. company acquisition completed by Metso in 2026 through the research date. Primary disclosure identifies MRA as the completed 2026 acquisition through H1, while Metso separately announced U.S. service and training investments. The pending Valmet pump-technology transaction is an asset/business acquisition but had not closed by 2026-08-30. I therefore do not include an unidentified U.S. acquisition in the transaction record.
The central bull/bear disagreement is now valuation rather than whether the operating business has improved. Bulls can point to a 56% group aftermarket mix, 65% Minerals aftermarket mix, rising backlog, 18% Minerals margins, copper project spending and an explicit group target above 18%. Bears can point to the equipment-led character of the current order acceleration, a still-cyclical aftermarket, working-capital absorption, and a share price that has risen roughly 65% in a year. On trailing continuing EPS of roughly EUR 0.60, the stock trades around 30x earnings. A reconstructed enterprise value of about EUR 16.3 billion against EUR 931 million of rolling EBITDA is roughly 17.5x EV/EBITDA. Those are quality-industrial multiples, not depressed mining-cycle multiples.
Qualitative portrait: re-rating. Metso has earned part of the re-rating by lifting margins, cleaning the portfolio and exposing how large the recurring installed-base economics really are. The market is now moving beyond paying for that past improvement and beginning to pre-pay the 2028 margin and growth targets. That distinction will dominate the stock's next phase.
Vertical history, financial evolution and capital-market narrative
Metso's corporate history makes more sense once the legal lineage and the industrial lineage are pulled apart. The legal listed company descends from Outokumpu Technology. The industrial asset base created in 2020 combined that lineage with Metso Minerals, including a large collection of crushing, grinding and wear-technology assets accumulated under the old Metso organization. Treating the company as though it simply “started” in 2020 loses the technology history; treating pre-2020 Metso Corporation financials as though they belonged to today's listed entity creates the opposite error.
Outokumpu Technology was born out of a metals producer's internal engineering knowledge. Outokumpu had developed processing and metallurgical technologies to solve its own mining and metals problems, then sold that know-how to outside customers in growing volume. The eventual spin-out reflected a broader strategic choice: Outokumpu wanted to concentrate on metals, while the technology arm could chase customers that would naturally include Outokumpu's competitors. The resulting business was born a specialist process-technology supplier, not a founder-led startup.
Its public-market birth came in October 2006. Outokumpu sold 33.6 million Outokumpu Technology shares at EUR 12.50 each, representing 80% of the company before exercise of the over-allotment option. Net proceeds to Outokumpu were approximately EUR 410 million. This distinction matters: the IPO was principally a shareholder sell-down, not a growth-capital raise into the operating company. Preliminary trading began on 10 October 2006 and Nordic-list trading on 13 October. The company changed its name from Outokumpu Technology to Outotec in April 2007.
The early capital-market story was classic mining-project exposure. Outotec sold engineering, technology and plant solutions into an extraordinary commodity-investment environment. Large concentrators, smelters and process lines create high order values and years of backlog, but they also make earnings sensitive to commodity prices and customer investment decisions. The post-financial-crisis mining rebound reinforced the appeal of that model; the post-2012 collapse in mining capex exposed its weakness.
The 2013–16 downturn was formative for both sides of today's Metso. Mining companies cut growth projects, squeezed suppliers and focused on cash. Outotec's project business suffered, and legacy Metso's Minerals business showed how violently original-equipment demand could fall. In 2015, legacy Metso's mining-equipment sales dropped about 40%; mining-service sales declined only about 2%. In early 2016 the gap remained enormous: equipment and project sales were down 47% while service sales were down 8%. The installed-base lesson was already visible years before the merger. Customers can postpone a new mill; they have much less freedom to neglect a mill already processing ore.
That cycle eventually set up the logic for the 2020 combination. On 4 July 2019 Metso and Outotec announced a transaction under which Metso's Minerals business would be combined with Outotec, while Metso shareholders retained the separately listed flow-control business that became Neles. Metso shareholders were to receive 4.3 newly issued Outotec shares for each Metso share and own roughly 78% of the combined Metso Outotec; existing Outotec shareholders would own roughly 22%. Solidium, the Finnish state's investment company, already held large stakes in both and remained an anchor shareholder.
The legal and accounting mechanics are unusual enough to state explicitly. Legally, Outotec was the acquirer and issued shares. Under IFRS purchase-accounting rules, however, Metso Minerals was treated as the accounting acquirer and Outotec as the accounting acquiree: an accounting reverse acquisition. Trading in the combined Metso Outotec began on Nasdaq Helsinki on 1 July 2020. The company was renamed Metso in May 2023.
The industrial rationale was more important than the legal mechanics. Outotec contributed flotation, filtration, hydrometallurgical and metallurgical process capabilities; Metso Minerals brought crushing, grinding, screening, wear parts and a large service footprint. The combined company could cover most of a concentrator flowsheet and then monetize wear and maintenance across that installed base. Metso has subsequently said its technology covers more than 90% of the mineral-processing value chain. That breadth is a real commercial advantage in large projects, although “90% coverage” is a company-defined measure rather than an independent market-share statistic.
The merger initially arrived into COVID disruption and a weak Metals business. Illustrative combined 2020 sales were about EUR 3.897 billion and adjusted EBITA EUR 448 million, a margin near 11.5%. Management's early task was therefore less glamorous than the merger presentation: reduce overlapping cost, rationalize manufacturing, exit non-core businesses and stabilize underperforming activities.
By 2021 the integration was visibly working. FY2021 orders rose 31% to EUR 5.421 billion, sales rose 9% to EUR 4.236 billion and adjusted EBITA rose to EUR 547 million, or 12.9% of sales. Metso Outotec had achieved EUR 142 million of annualized cost synergies, already above the original EUR 120 million target, and management closed the formal integration phase earlier than initially expected.
FY2022 then showed both operational progress and the company's geopolitical exposure. Sales increased 25% to EUR 5.295 billion and adjusted EBITA reached EUR 731 million, a 13.8% margin. Russia's invasion of Ukraine forced a wind-down of a sizeable order book: at the end of March 2022, Metso had EUR 479 million of Russian backlog. The company booked a EUR 150 million non-recurring provision to exit those contracts; adjusted EBITA excluded it. The exit was substantially completed in Q1 2023, after which Metso ceased doing business in Russia.
The Russia episode was financially painful but strategically clarifying. A supplier of very large processing plants cannot avoid geopolitical exposures merely by diversifying factories; contracts sit in countries where ore bodies exist. Metso proved it could absorb a EUR 150 million exceptional hit without losing investment-grade access or interrupting the broader margin progression. It did not prove immunity to country risk.
FY2023 became the first clean demonstration of the earnings power investors had hoped the combination could reach. Sales were EUR 5.390 billion and adjusted EBITA EUR 887 million, producing a 16.5% margin. Operating profit reached EUR 805 million. That was a long step up from the illustrative 11.5% combined margin of 2020, driven by synergy capture, better pricing and mix, and the removal or repair of weaker businesses.
The next turn was a slowdown rather than a collapse. On the basis originally reported in FY2024, sales declined 10% to EUR 4.863 billion as weaker backlog, especially in equipment, flowed into revenue; adjusted EBITA was EUR 804 million and margin remained 16.5%. H1 2024 illustrates the resilience: Minerals equipment sales fell 24% year on year while services were flat, allowing cost discipline and mix to cushion profitability. Aggregates H1 2024 sales fell 15%, with equipment down 21% and services down only 3%.
That period is useful because it shows what post-merger Metso looks like when equipment volumes roll over. Revenue falls, but margins do not collapse as quickly as they did in the old project-centric model. The higher service share dampens operating leverage. This is an important reason the equity deserves a higher through-cycle multiple than old Outotec. It does not make the cyclicality disappear.
The financial statements then changed basis again. From 1 July 2025, Metals & Chemical Processing was classified within continuing operations. Metso re-presented the 2024 comparison accordingly: FY2024 sales became EUR 5.026 billion rather than the originally reported EUR 4.863 billion; adjusted EBITA became about EUR 830 million rather than EUR 804 million. FY2025 on that basis delivered orders of EUR 5.471 billion versus EUR 5.278 billion restated in 2024, sales of EUR 5.240 billion versus EUR 5.026 billion, and adjusted EBITA of EUR 829 million versus EUR 830 million. The adjusted EBITA margin eased to 15.8% from 16.5%.
The table below therefore deliberately separates historical bases rather than pretending that every year is one homogeneous series.

The business behind the table tells a better story than a simple revenue CAGR would. From 2020 through 2023, the main value creation was margin rather than raw volume: merger synergies, portfolio cleanup and mix lifted adjusted EBITA margin by about five percentage points. From 2024 onward, the problem changed. Metso is no longer proving that the merger can work; management is trying to turn a mid-teens-margin industrial into a company capable of more than 18% adjusted EBITA while growing sales at least 7% annually through 2028.
The portfolio transactions fit that shift. Metso has repeatedly divested businesses that either carry project risk or dilute the desired service-and-consumables economics. The Ferrous sale completed on 5 January 2026 transferred the travelling-grate pelletizing and Circored direct-reduction product lines and related service activities to SMS group, with about 180 employees; Metso said the transaction would have no material financial impact.
On the acquisition side, the deals are small enough to improve niches without turning the balance sheet into a merger bet. Swiss Tower Mills strengthens energy-efficient fine grinding; Saimu brings screening technology in China; Q&R Industrial Hoses adds slurry-handling capability; MRA covers bulk-material automation and software. The three 2025 acquisitions carried aggregate purchase consideration of EUR 201 million. MRA's 2026 purchase consideration was EUR 32 million including contingent consideration, with EUR 18 million of accounting goodwill. All were allocated to Minerals.
The pending Flowrox technology acquisition from Valmet makes the strategic direction even clearer. Peristaltic hose pumps and progressive-cavity pumps live in the same abrasive-fluid circuits that drive recurring parts demand. The transaction value is undisclosed and Metso does not expect a material immediate financial impact; the importance is product adjacency rather than scale. Closing was expected for 1 October 2026, after this report's base date.
The 2025 strategy update formalized this move. Metso's targets for the end of 2028 are annual sales CAGR of at least 7%, adjusted EBITA margin above 18%, net debt/EBITDA below 1.5 and annual dividend of at least 50% of EPS. The old profitability goal had been above 17% over the cycle. Raising the margin target, after 2024–25 proved that a roughly 16% margin could survive softer equipment volumes, tells investors that management sees structural rather than merely cyclical room left.
Capital markets have responded by changing the label applied to the company. Metso spent the first years after the merger trading like an integration-and-mining-cycle story. The de-rating during softer 2023–24 order conditions reflected concern that elevated margins might simply be a commodity-cycle gift. The subsequent recovery in orders, maintenance of mid-teens margins and 2028 strategy have encouraged investors to pay for recurring aftermarket quality instead.
The multiple history illustrates that change more clearly than raw prices. One third-party historical series places Metso at about 13.2x trailing P/E at the end of 2023 and 21.5x at the end of 2024; today, on a reconstructed approximately EUR 0.60 of trailing continuing EPS, the primary Helsinki shares trade around 30x. Exact long-range percentiles are noisy, since the legal share line crosses the pre-merger Outotec period and years with accounting discontinuities. Even so, the current multiple sits plainly well above the clean 2023–24 center, roughly in the upper quartile of positive historical observations rather than near a trough.
The share's roughly 65% one-year increase through 28 August 2026 therefore has two components. Earnings expectations improved because Minerals orders and margins accelerated; the multiple also expanded because investors became more willing to treat Metso as an aftermarket compounder. That second component is now the more fragile one.
Business model, moat, management and industry cycle
Metso reports two segments, but there are effectively four economic businesses inside them: Aggregates equipment, Aggregates aftermarket, Minerals equipment and Minerals aftermarket. Those four activities have materially different cyclicality.

Minerals is the economic center. It produced about three-quarters of H1 2026 group sales and an even larger proportion of the business's installed-base opportunity. Its equipment ranges from crushing and grinding through flotation, thickening, filtration and downstream process technology. Its aftermarket sells wear parts, mill linings, screening media, spares, repair, upgrades and process services. Equipment profitability matters, but the installed base it creates has value far beyond the original sale.
Aggregates addresses a different customer population: quarries, construction-material producers and contractors using stationary, mobile and portable crushers and screens. Infrastructure and construction activity matter more here than metal prices. The aftermarket share is materially lower, so the segment has more conventional machinery-cycle characteristics. The H1 2026 16.2% adjusted EBITA margin is healthy, but the economics are less recurring than Minerals.
Metso does not disclose gross margin or adjusted EBITA separately for equipment and aftermarket. That is an important analytical limit. Revenue and order mix can be split because the company publishes them; profit cannot. Management commentary repeatedly attributes margin movements partly to business mix, and industry economics strongly suggest parts and service carry better recurring returns than project equipment. But assigning a precise aftermarket EBITA margin would be fabrication. The report therefore does not do so.
The cost base contains more fixed cost than a simple distributor but less project risk than an EPC contractor. Factories, foundries, service centers, engineering teams, test facilities, sales organizations and R&D create structural fixed cost. Materials, outsourced fabrication, freight and project labor vary with volume. High factory utilization and a richer service mix therefore support margin; falling equipment volumes create negative operating leverage, although aftermarket demand keeps factories and service infrastructure from becoming completely stranded.
Metso also needs continuing capital and R&D investment. H1 2026 capex was EUR 74 million, versus EUR 56 million in H1 2025. The company is investing about EUR 150 million in phase one of an Aggregates technology center in Tampere through 2027, with a further roughly EUR 60 million phase planned over three years beginning in 2026. Capital intensity remains modest relative to sales, but the business cannot be run indefinitely as an asset-light licensing company.
The first genuine moat is the installed base. Mineral-processing equipment operates under extreme wear. A mill liner, screen panel or slurry component that fails early can shut a plant whose lost production is worth far more than the part itself. That pushes customers toward proven fit, performance and local availability. Metso's 56% group aftermarket share is the observable financial footprint of that installed-base advantage.
The moat has limits. Independent foundries and specialists can produce replacement wear parts; mines routinely use more than one supplier; and rival OEMs can sell upgrades into installed equipment. Switching costs are therefore economic and operational rather than contractual. Metso wins when the customer's expected cost of downtime, recovery loss or accelerated wear exceeds the price premium of OEM parts. It loses when a generic part proves “good enough.”
Process breadth is the second moat. A supplier that understands crushing, grinding, flotation, thickening and filtration can optimize the plant as a circuit rather than one machine at a time. That is particularly useful as miners seek higher recovery from lower-grade ore or debottleneck an existing plant. Metso claims coverage of more than 90% of the processing value chain; the strategic value is cross-equipment process knowledge, not the percentage itself.
FLSmidth is the clearest challenge to that moat because it can make a comparable full-flowsheet argument. Weir is a different threat: it dominates specific high-wear slurry applications with an exceptionally aftermarket-heavy model. Metso's breadth therefore wins some projects, while narrower specialists may win individual components on technology or lifetime cost.
Third comes the service footprint. Mines are geographically fixed, often remote, and downtime is expensive. A local service center, stocked parts and field technicians can matter more than a marginal technical specification. Metso's H1 2026 sales were unusually diversified by geography: EUR 533 million in Europe, EUR 561 million in North and Central America, EUR 527 million in South America, EUR 436 million in Asia-Pacific and EUR 530 million in Africa, the Middle East and India. No one region dominates the revenue base.
Fourth is accumulated process data and application know-how, though it remains less proven as a standalone digital moat. Metso said in July 2026 that more than 800 machines were connected to its data-driven performance services, more than double the number in September 2025. Company case studies claim improved failure detection and plant availability. These figures show increasing digital attachment to the installed base; they do not yet establish software-like network effects because the value is still tightly tied to Metso hardware and engineering.
The technology pipeline matters because grinding is one of mining's largest energy loads. Metso entered an exclusive partnership with Loesche in February 2026 to introduce vertical-roller-mill dry-grinding technology to hard-rock applications; Metso says the design can materially reduce energy use versus conventional circuits. At its September 2026 innovation event, scheduled after this research date, management planned to present additional coarse-flotation and flowsheet technologies. The commercial question is whether these products generate retrofit orders and higher installed-base penetration rather than merely sustainability marketing.
The service moat's most demanding historical test remains 2015–16. The evidence rejects the strongest marketing version of the thesis. Legacy Metso's mining services fell much less than equipment in 2015, but they still fell. In 2016, service order and revenue pressure continued as miners deferred shutdowns and squeezed inventories. The proper through-cycle assumption is therefore low-single-digit resilience in an ordinary capex slowdown and a mid-to-high-single-digit decline in a severe mining cash-preservation episode, not automatic growth in every downturn.
That history also explains why Weir deserves serious attention in the peer work. Weir says each piece of original Minerals equipment generates, on average, aftermarket spares revenue equal to roughly 30% of the original equipment value annually, and that Minerals aftermarket revenue compounded about 7% from 2010 through 2024 despite major mining downturns. Metso does not disclose an equivalent installed-base monetization statistic. Weir therefore provides an external benchmark for what a very pure mining-aftermarket model can achieve.
Management is increasingly aligned with these economics. Sami Takaluoma became CEO in November 2024 after spending most of his career inside Metso, which he joined in 1997. Immediately before becoming CEO he led Services, and before that Consumables. His operating background therefore comes from the parts of Metso that investors most want to expand. Piia Karhu leads Minerals; Pasi Kyckling became CFO in 2025.
That insider continuity reduces integration risk but creates another test: Takaluoma must now prove he can allocate capital across the entire group rather than only operate a service franchise. The first evidence is sensible. Bolt-on acquisitions are measured rather than transformative; Ferrous was sold; the balance sheet remains investment grade; and the strategy ties growth to a leverage ceiling. H1 2026 net debt/EBITDA of 1.3 is close enough to the 1.5 target that a large debt-funded acquisition would currently look inconsistent with the stated framework.
Ownership is unusually stable for a European industrial. As of 15 August 2026, Solidium held 14.9% of shares and votes, Cevian Capital Partners 7.8%, Ilmarinen 3.4% and Varma 2.9%. Metso has one class of share, with one vote per share. Solidium's position has persisted through the combination, while Cevian provides an activist-style financial owner alongside the Finnish state investor. No shareholder has outright control.
The FY2025 dividend was EUR 0.40 per share, approved in two installments, against continuing EPS of EUR 0.58. That payout is about 69% of EPS and therefore comfortably above the company's minimum 50% policy. The AGM also renewed standard share-repurchase authorizations; an authorization should not be mistaken for an executed buyback.
I found no evidence in the reviewed primary disclosures of an accounting-fraud investigation, dual-class governance discount or current takeover/delisting process. The more material governance issue is capital discipline: the market is paying for management to expand services and technology without rebuilding the project risk that the portfolio clean-up was designed to reduce.
The industry cycle is a combination of commodity prices, mining capex, replacement cycles and tonnes processed. Original-equipment demand moves with project sanctioning and brownfield expansion. Aftermarket moves more with production. Aggregates adds a construction and infrastructure cycle. This mix is why Metso cannot be classified as either a conventional mining cyclical or a defensive industrial.
Copper is the strongest structural end market. The IEA estimates the average global copper mine grade has fallen around 40% since 1991 and notes that lower-grade ore raises processing energy and waste per unit of recovered metal. The agency sees a potentially substantial copper supply gap by 2035 under the current project pipeline. Higher metal prices do not automatically produce Metso orders; the mechanism is that they improve project economics and make recovery-enhancing investments easier to justify.
Customer capex is supporting that mechanism now. BHP's FY2026 capital program reached US$10.3 billion and its medium-term plan is about US$11 billion a year, with more than half directed to copper growth. Rio Tinto's Oyu Tolgoi underground ramp-up drove 31% H1 copper production growth, while Simandou's iron-ore mine and port construction were more than three-quarters complete by mid-2026. These are the kinds of projects that feed grinding, flotation, filtration and wear-part demand.
This customer evidence is more representative of Metso than a gold-heavy miner sample. Gold miners matter, but copper and iron-ore processing have much larger throughputs and are more relevant to several of Metso's largest flowsheet technologies. The order thesis should therefore be cross-checked against diversified and copper-heavy majors such as BHP, Rio Tinto and Freeport rather than inferred from precious-metals capex alone. Freeport's Q2 2026 disclosures likewise described continued copper investment and operating recovery at its major assets.
There is still no evidence of an indiscriminate global mining-capex boom. The IEA says investment in critical-mineral supply fell 9% in 2025. Copper prices had risen sharply into early 2026, but high project costs, permitting and geopolitical uncertainty continue to slow new supply. That combination favors brownfield efficiency, replacement and selected high-quality greenfields. It is arguably a better environment for Metso's mix than a speculative greenfield boom because modernization creates both equipment orders and service attachment.
Tariffs are a secondary rather than existential policy risk. Metso said in 2025 that the U.S. represented about 15% of sales and that direct China-to-U.S. supply had already been minimized. Its mitigation plan included passing tariffs through pricing and rerouting sourcing through its global footprint. Management saw the larger danger in tariffs depressing economic confidence and delaying customer capex rather than in an unmanageable direct tariff bill.
The Russia exit illustrates the more serious geopolitical tail risk: a sanctioned jurisdiction can make backlog economically unrecoverable. The geographic diversity of today's sales lowers the probability that any single future country event has the same proportional effect, but mineral deposits cannot be relocated to politically convenient markets.
Horizontal competitors and current fundamentals
The appropriate peer set begins with FLSmidth and Weir. Epiroc and Sandvik are useful valuation and mining-capital-quality references, but they operate further upstream at the mine face and in rock excavation. ANDRITZ and Alfa Laval are high-quality European industrial comparables, yet their end markets and installed-base economics differ too much to drive a direct Metso valuation. That distinction matters because a peer set dominated by Epiroc and Sandvik makes Metso look like a premium mining-technology company; a set dominated by old project contractors makes it look expensive. The business itself sits between those poles.
FLSmidth is the closest strategic competitor. It has spent several years divesting and separating cement activities and refocusing around mining, services and Pumps, Cyclones & Valves. Its portfolio overlaps with Metso across crushing, grinding, flotation, filtration and increasingly slurry-circuit equipment. Its Q2 2026 organic order intake grew 13%, total orders 14% and revenue 17%; adjusted EBITA margin reached 17.3%, up from 15.2% in Q2 2025. FLSmidth is therefore converging toward the same economic destination Metso describes: less risky projects, more service and a higher-margin processing franchise.
Customers can prefer FLSmidth where its proprietary process technology or installed equipment is entrenched, and its PCV portfolio overlaps heavily in slurry circuits. Metso's relative advantage is broader exposure to aggregates and a large installed base across both crushing and downstream processes. FLSmidth's relative advantage is that its recent restructuring creates more room for self-help; that also makes its trailing earnings and P/E less comparable because discontinued and transformation activities distort the denominator.
Weir became something different. It is narrower than Metso but arguably purer economically. Weir Minerals concentrates on slurry pumps, cyclones, valves, wear linings and processing equipment exposed to abrasive flow; ESCO adds ground-engaging tools. Its 2024 annual report says an average Minerals original-equipment sale can generate annual aftermarket spares revenue equal to around 30% of original value and that Minerals aftermarket revenue compounded around 7% since 2010. A narrower product franchise with very high recurrent wear has produced through-cycle economics the market values highly.
The customer trade-off is therefore breadth versus intensity. A mine can use Metso to engineer and optimize much of a concentrator; it may use Weir for a specific slurry circuit because a Warman pump or wear system has established reliability. Weir is the strongest evidence that the capital market can rationally assign a high multiple to mining equipment when enough profit comes from production-linked aftermarket rather than new-mine capex.
Epiroc sits upstream. It sells drill rigs, underground and surface mining equipment, rock tools, service and automation. Q2 2026 adjusted operating margin was 20.1%, with EBIT up sharply year on year. The roughly 37x trailing P/E at the research date shows what investors will pay for a mining-industrial company with high margins, service attachment and automation exposure. Epiroc is not a direct flowsheet substitute, but it defines the upper valuation boundary for quality in the sector.
Sandvik is similarly adjacent. Q2 2026 group organic orders rose 17%, organic revenue 23% and adjusted EBITA margin reached 22.6%. Its mining business reported double-digit aftermarket order growth, while equipment growth was only 2% against high comparisons. This mix is useful for Metso investors: even the premium upstream names derive much of their resilience from aftermarket.
A narrow numeric comparison shows that Metso's valuation is already closer to the high-quality aftermarket companies than to a depressed project supplier.

The table makes two points. Metso is much larger than FLSmidth and Weir by equity value but smaller than Epiroc. Its P/E is above Weir and FLSmidth and below Epiroc. The market is already assigning Metso a service-quality premium; investors cannot rely on a future peer re-rating as the entire return case.
FLSmidth's lower trailing multiple is partly deserved by its more complicated recent transformation and weaker historical profitability. Metso deserves some premium because its merger integration is further advanced and its group margin has remained near the mid-teens even through softer 2024 volumes. The current spread becomes difficult to defend only if FLSmidth proves that its 17%+ Q2 2026 margin is structural while Metso fails to move toward 18%.
Weir is analytically more dangerous for the Metso bull case. At roughly 28x trailing earnings it trades at a modest discount to Metso despite a more explicitly aftermarket-centric model and higher recent margin. Metso must therefore justify its premium with broader addressable market, superior equipment growth or stronger margin expansion. The H1 2026 order figures currently support that argument; they do not settle it.
Epiroc earns the highest multiple because its profitability is higher and investors value its automation and service characteristics. Metso would need to establish sustained group margins above 18%, stronger free-cash-flow conversion and less project volatility before a persistent Epiroc-like multiple would be conservative.
The recent fundamental arc is clearer when the restatement is respected. FY2025 generated EUR 5.240 billion of sales, EUR 829 million of adjusted EBITA and a 15.8% margin on the re-presented continuing basis. H1 2025 comparatives used in the latest report show EUR 2.469 billion sales, EUR 2.706 billion orders and EUR 375 million adjusted EBITA. Subtracting those figures from FY2025 gives a two-quarter H2 2025 aggregate of roughly EUR 2.771 billion sales, EUR 2.765 billion orders and EUR 454 million adjusted EBITA. This is the safest way to bridge the last four quarters without splicing old-basis Q3/Q4 snapshots.
Q1 2026 then brought EUR 1.555 billion of orders, up 6% year on year, and EUR 1.252 billion of sales, up 3%. The EUR 100 million Tía María order in Peru sat inside Q1 new equipment orders that were flat year on year.
Q2 2026 accelerated further: EUR 1.462 billion of orders, up 18% versus Q2 2025; EUR 1.334 billion of sales, up 6%; adjusted EBITA EUR 221 million, up 21%, and 16.6% margin. Q2 2026 gross profit reached EUR 445 million and gross margin 33.3%, versus 31.4% in Q2 2025. Cash flow from operations before financial items and taxes was EUR 206 million, up from EUR 147 million.
Combining H2 2025 with H1 2026 yields a reconstructed trailing-12-month sales figure near EUR 5.36 billion, orders near EUR 5.78 billion and adjusted EBITA near EUR 878 million, a margin around 16.4%. Orders are therefore running ahead of sales over the trailing year, which supports near-term conversion unless project phasing or cancellations intervene.
The quality of that backlog matters as much as its size. H1 2026 backlog was EUR 3.662 billion, up 13%. Minerals accounted for EUR 3.118 billion and Aggregates EUR 544 million. Minerals H1 book-to-bill was 1.15 and Aggregates 1.21. The concentration in Minerals leaves current backlog heavily exposed to the mining project environment rather than a construction-only recovery.
The order mix is especially revealing. H1 2026 group aftermarket orders were EUR 1.645 billion and 55% of total orders. That leaves roughly EUR 1.372 billion of equipment/project orders. Against H1 2025, aftermarket orders rose 8%; derived equipment orders rose approximately 16%. Q2 2026 shows the same pattern: aftermarket orders rose 12%, while the residual equipment portion grew materially faster. The share price is therefore partly trading an equipment-capex acceleration layered on top of a resilient service base.
This is the strongest near-term bull evidence, and also a source of risk. Equipment orders turn into future revenue, support factory absorption and add future aftermarket. They are also the demand component most vulnerable to commodity-price reversals and project delays.
Cash conversion prevents a fully celebratory reading. H1 2026 profit improved, but net working capital consumed EUR 186 million. IFRS operating cash flow fell to EUR 131 million from EUR 283 million in H1 2025. Q2 itself improved, suggesting some normalization, but H1 leaves a clear requirement for the second half: backlog growth must convert into cash rather than inventories and receivables.
Management's formal market outlook remains restrained. At the H1 2026 release it expected market activity in both Minerals and Aggregates over the next six months to remain at the current level. That is important because the share price has re-rated faster than management's qualitative outlook. The company is reporting strong orders without declaring the start of a new supercycle.
The market is instead extrapolating three real facts: copper capital intensity is rising; Metso's installed base provides service resilience; and management has a credible path to higher margins if volume and mix cooperate. The speculative layer is that all three persist simultaneously long enough to make a 30x earnings multiple ordinary.
Publicly accessible evidence of aggregate analyst estimate revisions is insufficient to quantify a consensus upgrade cycle reliably. A broker summary published around the research date reported Berenberg setting a EUR 21 target and favoring Metso and Weir within European mining equipment, citing Metso's full-flowsheet exposure. I treat that as evidence of the current positive sell-side narrative rather than as a substitute for a verified consensus revision series.
The bull case rests on four pieces of evidence. The backlog is rising; Minerals equipment orders are broadening beyond a single Q1 project; the aftermarket majority limits downside; and 18% Minerals margin shows that the group target is already being achieved inside its largest segment.
The bear case is equally concrete. Group H1 margin remains 16.4%, not above 18%; equipment rather than aftermarket is leading order acceleration; H1 free cash generation weakened because of working capital; and the stock has already moved from a roughly low-20s P/E at the end of 2024 to around 30x trailing earnings.
Valuation, risks, catalysts and tracking
The valuation starts with cash-flow passthrough rather than an earnings multiple.
Reported IFRS operating cash flow over the last five full years was approximately EUR 508 million in 2021, EUR 127 million in 2022, EUR 302 million in 2023, EUR 332 million in 2024 and EUR 779 million in 2025. The five-year sum is roughly EUR 2.05 billion. The matching reported group profit totals are approximately EUR 1.9 billion, giving an aggregate operating-cash-flow/net-income ratio around 1.08x. That is acceptable over the full period, but the annual pattern is highly volatile because working capital and discontinued operations are large.
The worst recent distortions are instructive. In 2022 and 2023, working capital consumed large amounts of cash as supply chains and sales expanded. In 2024, a one-time discontinued-operations item caused a EUR 275 million cash outflow in Q3. In 2025, working capital moved the other direction, adding EUR 70 million to cash generation. Investors should therefore normalize cash conversion across a cycle rather than annualize whichever year looks best.
Metso no longer publishes a clean maintenance-versus-growth-capex split. Historical legacy Metso reporting did separate maintenance investment, but applying that old percentage mechanically to the current combined company would be false precision. Current total capex was EUR 152 million in 2025, while known expansion projects such as Tampere imply a meaningful growth component. I estimate normalized maintenance capex at roughly EUR 90–110 million a year and growth capex around EUR 40–70 million in a normal year, with growth spending temporarily higher during the Tampere build. That split is an analytical estimate, not a company disclosure.
For valuation I use total capex, not estimated maintenance capex, as the conservative free-cash-flow deduction. FY2025 IFRS operating cash flow of EUR 779 million less EUR 152 million capex produced roughly EUR 627 million of free cash flow. The trailing-12-month figure through H1 2026 is weaker: H1 2026 operating cash flow of EUR 131 million plus reconstructed H2 2025 operating cash flow of EUR 496 million equals about EUR 627 million, while trailing capex is approximately EUR 170 million, leaving about EUR 457 million of FCF.
That trailing FCF is approximately EUR 0.55 a share, producing a 3.0% FCF yield and about 33x P/FCF at EUR 18.19. Trailing continuing EPS is roughly EUR 0.60, implying about 30.3x P/E. The owner-earnings and accounting-earnings valuations differ by about 9%, EUR 0.55 against EUR 0.60 a share, so there is no need to discard earnings entirely; both should be used.
Net debt of EUR 1.214 billion added to the approximately EUR 15.08 billion equity capitalization gives enterprise value near EUR 16.29 billion. Against rolling EBITDA of EUR 931 million, that is about 17.5x EV/EBITDA. Against reconstructed trailing adjusted EBITA around EUR 878 million, EV/adjusted EBITA is roughly 18.6x.
None of those measures is cheap on an industrial-cycle basis. The question is whether Metso now deserves to be valued as a recurring service compounder. Historical evidence supports some structural re-rating: the current 56% aftermarket share, merger-driven margin improvement and resilient 2024 profitability are objectively better than the old Outotec project model. It does not support treating 30x as a downside-protected multiple.
The peer comparison reaches the same conclusion. Metso trades around 30x versus roughly 28x for Weir, 22–23x for transformation-heavy FLSmidth and about 37x for Epiroc. A premium over FLSmidth is reasonable. A premium over Weir is harder to justify unless Metso's broader equipment franchise creates faster long-term installed-base growth. A discount to Epiroc remains reasonable because Metso has lower margins and more project exposure.
Absolute valuation therefore carries more weight than the peer average. The following scenarios use normalized 2028 economics, owner-earnings/P-E multiples and an EV/EBITA cross-check. They are valuation-scenario analysis within a research framework, not investment advice.

In the first two columns the assumptions sit deliberately below management's target. The base case does not assume the company fully delivers its “at least 7% sales CAGR and >18% margin” goal by 2028. If those targets are achieved with clean cash conversion, the optimistic case becomes more plausible. Today's price is already almost equal to the base fair value, and that is the core valuation problem.
The conservative EV/EBITA cross-check works as follows. EUR 5.8 billion sales at 15.5% margin produces about EUR 0.90 billion adjusted EBITA; a 14x enterprise multiple implies around EUR 12.6 billion EV. Subtracting roughly today's EUR 1.2 billion net debt gives around EUR 11.4 billion equity value, or about EUR 13.7 per share. The owner-earnings method produces a figure in the same general EUR 14 area.
The base case uses roughly EUR 1.09 billion of 2028 adjusted EBITA and a 15.5x EV/EBITA multiple. That produces about EUR 17.0 billion EV; after net debt, the equity value is near EUR 19 per share. The owner-earnings method using EUR 0.72 and about 26x produces EUR 18.7. I round the combined base value to EUR 18.9.
The optimistic case effectively assumes the 2028 strategy works: sales around EUR 6.65 billion and adjusted EBITA margin 18.5% yield roughly EUR 1.23 billion of adjusted EBITA. A 17x EV/EBITA multiple supports about EUR 23–24 per share after net debt; EUR 0.82 owner earnings at about 29x arrives at a similar number.
The expectation gap is therefore narrow in the base case. The next positive surprise must come from one of three variables: order growth staying above sales growth, group margin moving decisively toward 17–18%, or working-capital cash conversion normalizing. Simply repeating a 16.4% H1 margin with 5% sales growth would be respectable operationally but inadequate to create much value from a 30x starting P/E.
The most fragile base-case assumption is the valuation multiple. The company has more direct control over margin than over what investors will pay for those earnings. Taking the base owner-earnings multiple of 26x down to 70% of that level, 18.2x, would reduce the approximately EUR 18.9 base valuation to roughly EUR 13 per share even if the earnings assumptions were unchanged. That is the clearest permanent-loss mechanism: satisfactory business execution combined with an industrial-multiple normalization.
The flat-earnings test is similarly uncomfortable. At today's price and FY2025 dividend of EUR 0.40, the cash dividend yield is roughly 2.2%. If earnings were flat for three years, the P/E ended unchanged and dividends stayed around EUR 0.40, annualized shareholder return would be roughly 2.2%. Finland's 10-year government-bond yield was about 3.6% on 28 August 2026. On that flat-earnings test, there is no margin of safety at this buy price.
The current price is also above the EUR 14 conservative value rather than below it. The margin-of-safety verdict is therefore: none. This is a good business at a price that requires continued progress, not a statistically cheap cyclical at trough earnings.
The first permanent-loss risk is a mining-equipment order reversal. Probability is medium and impact high. The observable indicators are Minerals equipment-order growth, group book-to-bill and the capital budgets of BHP, Rio Tinto, Freeport and major copper developers. A copper-price reversal or severe project inflation would postpone greenfield and brownfield decisions; equipment orders would fall first, factory absorption would weaken later, and eventually fewer equipment placements would slow installed-base growth. The transmission path runs orders → backlog → equipment revenue → margin → aftermarket installed-base growth → valuation. The 2015–16 history shows the service business cushions this path but does not block it.
The second risk is that investors overestimate aftermarket defensiveness. Probability is low-to-medium, impact high because the stock's re-rating depends on this quality claim. The warning signal would be aftermarket orders turning negative for two consecutive quarters while miners cut sustaining as well as growth capex. A severe downturn could produce a mid-single-digit service decline even while equipment falls much faster, exactly as occurred in the 2015–16 trough. At 30x earnings, a service contraction would challenge both earnings and the multiple assigned to them.
Execution and working capital form the third risk. Probability is medium and impact medium-to-high. H1 2026 consumed EUR 186 million in working capital and produced only EUR 131 million of IFRS operating cash flow. Inventories and receivables can be perfectly rational when backlog is expanding, but persistent working-capital absorption would show that order growth is less valuable in cash terms than the P&L suggests. Watch rolling cash conversion: below roughly 80% for an extended period would challenge the current valuation.
The fourth risk is multiple compression. Probability is medium-to-high and impact high. Metso's approximately 30x trailing P/E and 3.0% LTM FCF yield leave the share sensitive to bond yields and changes in market style. Finland's 10-year yield around 3.6% already exceeds the stock's trailing FCF yield before any equity-risk premium. A move from 30x to 20x with unchanged EUR 0.60 EPS would put the share near EUR 12. This risk requires no recession and no competitive failure.
The fifth risk is capital allocation drift. Probability is low-to-medium and impact medium. Current acquisitions are modest and strategically adjacent, but the new growth target creates an incentive to buy revenue. Net debt/EBITDA is already 1.3 against a target below 1.5. A large acquisition financed with debt or equity could turn today's clean installed-base story back into an integration story. The observable indicators are acquisition consideration, goodwill growth, leverage and whether acquired businesses raise aftermarket exposure.
Sixth, geopolitical and trade disruption. Probability is medium and impact medium. Metso has diversified manufacturing and has already minimized China-to-U.S. supply, reducing direct U.S. tariff exposure; the larger threat is delayed customer capex when global trade uncertainty rises. Russia showed the extreme case, where EUR 479 million of backlog exposure led to a EUR 150 million exceptional wind-down provision.
Positive catalysts over the next year are unusually measurable. Q3 and Q4 orders remaining above sales would extend backlog; a group adjusted EBITA margin above 17% would make the 18% target less distant; working-capital release would push FCF toward the accounting earnings; and successful closing/integration of the Flowrox pump assets could add a small but high-fit aftermarket franchise.
The strongest negative catalysts would be a sudden fall in Minerals equipment orders, copper-miner capex cuts, group book-to-bill below one for several quarters, aftermarket contraction, or a margin reversal toward 15%. Because the current share price already incorporates a great deal of improvement, a “merely fine” quarter can also be a negative catalyst if expectations are higher.

The dashboard should be read as a chain rather than ten isolated signals. Orders lead backlog; backlog leads equipment sales; equipment placements enlarge the installed base; aftermarket monetizes that base. Margin tells whether the mix and pricing are valuable, while cash conversion tests whether the accounting value reaches shareholders. Valuation determines how much of that chain has already been paid for.
Cross-synthesis, final conclusion, uncertainties and sources
Vertically, Metso has proved more than an ability to sell mining machines. It has proved that a messy industrial combination can be turned into a materially better economic business. The illustrative combined adjusted EBITA margin was about 11.5% in 2020. By 2023 it was 16.5%. The company absorbed pandemic disruption, a EUR 150 million Russia wind-down, the disposal of non-core businesses and a 2024 equipment slowdown without returning to the old low-margin project profile. That is evidence of management execution, installed-base economics and portfolio improvement rather than commodity prices alone.
The merger's central strategic premise has also held up. Combining a broad mineral-processing equipment portfolio with recurring wear and service revenue created a company whose earnings are less dependent on any single generation of greenfield projects. H1 2026 Minerals aftermarket sales are 65% of the segment; the group is 56% aftermarket. Those are large enough percentages to change the character of the stock.
The permanent lesson from 2015–16 is equally important. This is still mining. Services fell far less than equipment, but they did fall. Investors should expect Metso to cross an ordinary mining slowdown better than a project supplier and a severe mining depression worse than a defensive industrial. The valuation should sit between those categories as well.
The present order cycle contains both structural and cyclical ingredients. Structural demand comes from ore-grade decline, higher processing intensity, water and energy constraints, modernization of ageing plants and a growing installed base. The IEA's finding that global copper mine grade has fallen roughly 40% since 1991 is particularly favorable for crushing, grinding and separation technology because producing a tonne of copper increasingly requires processing more material.
The cyclical ingredient is high copper economics and renewed project sanctioning. BHP plans about US$11 billion of annual medium-term capex with more than half devoted to copper growth. Q1 2026 Metso booked a major Peruvian greenfield copper order. Q2 Minerals equipment orders then rose around 50%. This is genuine demand, but it is also the exact part of Metso that will reverse fastest if project economics deteriorate.
The evidence suggests H1 2026 is broader than one mega-order. Q2 strength was described across grinding, crushing, commodities and geographies, while aftermarket orders also grew. That reduces the probability that the entire 12% H1 group order increase disappears when one project leaves the comparison base. It does not eliminate lumpiness because large process-equipment orders remain intrinsic to the industry.
Horizontally, Metso's strongest advantage is its position between FLSmidth's full-flowsheet engineering model and Weir's pure wear-and-aftermarket model. It can use a broad equipment portfolio to win original installations and then monetize a recurring service stream. FLSmidth is the closest threat because it is converging on the same strategy. Weir is the quality benchmark because its narrower installed base generates unusually dependable aftermarket. Epiroc defines the premium valuation boundary for mining technology with higher margins and automation exposure.
Metso's weakness relative to these competitors is economic mixture rather than technology obsolescence. FLSmidth can sometimes match its flowsheet breadth. Weir has purer recurrent wear economics. Epiroc has higher margins. Metso holds all three characteristics in partial form and none in monopoly form. This warrants a solid quality multiple, not an unlimited one.
The current management configuration is well suited to attacking that weakness. CEO Sami Takaluoma came directly from Services and Consumables. The acquisitions of STM, Saimu, Q&R and MRA increase niches with aftermarket or performance attachment. Ferrous was removed. The pending Flowrox transaction adds another wear-intensive pumping franchise. The portfolio is becoming more coherent.
The biggest 3–5-year question is whether this portfolio can move group adjusted EBITA above 18% without a permanently buoyant mining equipment cycle. Minerals is already at 18.0% in H1 2026, against its own segment target of at least 20%. Aggregates is 16.2% against a segment target of at least 17%, and corporate costs pull the consolidated margin down to 16.4%. That makes the target mathematically plausible: it does not require every segment to reinvent itself. It still requires enough service growth, price discipline, cost productivity and equipment utilization to overcome the group's lower-margin pieces.
The sales-growth target is more demanding. At least 7% annual CAGR through 2028 is materially above the 4% restated sales growth delivered in 2025 and the 5% H1 2026 growth rate. Orders are currently running faster than sales, so backlog can accelerate revenue in the near term. Sustaining 7% for several years will likely require both organic market growth and bolt-on M&A.
That explains the stock's re-rating. Investors are paying for the possibility that Metso can become closer to Weir or Epiroc in quality while retaining the growth upside of a full-flowsheet supplier. At EUR 18.19 and roughly 30x trailing continuing earnings, the market is no longer waiting for proof at a low price. It is buying some of that proof in advance.
The market may be underestimating how durable copper-processing intensity can be. Even if new mine approvals slow, falling grades and rising brownfield capital intensity force existing mines to spend on throughput, recovery, comminution efficiency and tailings. The IEA says brownfield copper capital intensity has risen about 65% since 2020, approaching greenfield levels. Metso does not need every dollar to build a new mine; a large portion of its value proposition is making old plants process more tonnes or recover more metal.
The market may simultaneously be overestimating how directly that structural need converts to shareholder returns. Customers negotiate hard, competitors are credible, large orders are lumpy and working capital can absorb the cash created by accounting profit. Structural demand does not guarantee structural excess returns for the supplier.
The latest cash-flow statement is the clearest reminder. H1 2026 adjusted EBITA rose 13% year on year, but IFRS operating cash flow fell by more than half because working capital expanded. That is probably reversible if the backlog converts; until reversal is visible, the gap deserves attention.
For the next 12 months, I would place the variables in this order: Minerals orders, group margin, working-capital release, and copper-capex guidance. If Q3 and Q4 maintain book-to-bill around or above one, group margin moves through 17% and cash conversion improves, the earnings denominator can grow into today's multiple. The next hard checkpoint is the 22 October 2026 nine-month report.
For three years, the decisive variable is whether the 2028 targets are achieved through organic service and equipment growth rather than acquisition volume. A company delivering 7% sales CAGR, >18% adjusted EBITA and normal cash conversion would be economically different from 2020 Metso Outotec and deserves a higher structural multiple. A company delivering 3–4% sales growth and 16% margin would still be respectable, but today's 30x starting P/E would have pre-spent too much of the improvement.
For five years, the deepest question is installed-base monetization. Metso's product breadth means every successful equipment cycle creates future service opportunities. If digital services, performance agreements and proprietary wear components make each installed euro of equipment generate progressively more recurring gross profit, the business can compound beyond the commodity cycle. If mines increasingly multi-source parts and independent suppliers narrow the performance gap, the aftermarket premium will plateau.
The company becomes a better investment in two ways. One is operational: the 18% margin is reached with strong cash conversion and aftermarket growth, lifting conservative intrinsic value. The other is purely price-driven: the share falls far enough that an ordinary mid-cycle outcome produces a satisfactory return. At today's price, the first path is doing most of the work.
The bull reasons can be reduced to four traceable points:
- H1 2026 backlog was EUR 3.662 billion, up 13%, and group book-to-bill was about 1.17, giving near-term revenue support.
- Aftermarket represented 56% of H1 2026 group sales and 65% of Minerals sales, making earnings materially less dependent on greenfield capex than legacy project suppliers.
- H1 2026 Minerals adjusted EBITA margin reached 18.0%, at the level of management's >18% group target, although Metso's own Minerals segment target is at least 20%.
- BHP's copper-heavy medium-term capex and the IEA's evidence on declining copper grades support a multiyear processing-investment need rather than a one-quarter order narrative.
The bear reasons are equally specific:
- H1 2026 equipment orders grew roughly twice as fast as aftermarket orders, so the latest acceleration contains a distinctly cyclical capex component.
- H1 2026 IFRS operating cash flow fell to EUR 131 million from EUR 283 million as working capital consumed EUR 186 million, weakening owner-earnings conversion.
- Services proved resilient rather than counter-cyclical in 2015–16; they still contracted when miners entered severe cash-preservation mode.
- At about 30x trailing continuing earnings and 3% trailing FCF yield, valuation provides little protection if margins stop improving or the market returns Metso to an ordinary industrial multiple.
A first pre-mortem script is a 2027–28 mining-project normalization. Copper prices soften, large greenfield awards fall and FLSmidth competes aggressively for the remaining concentrator projects while Weir takes selected high-wear aftermarket share. Metso Minerals equipment orders fall 20–25%, service growth turns slightly negative, consolidated adjusted EBITA margin falls from the current mid-16s toward 14.5–15% and EPS settles around EUR 0.48–0.50. If the P/E simultaneously contracts from about 30x to 18x, the share lands near EUR 9, roughly half the current price.
A second script requires no competitor breakthrough. A global industrial slowdown in 2027 causes miners to defer both brownfield upgrades and shutdown work, reproducing the 2015–16 pattern. Equipment revenue falls about 30%, aftermarket falls 6–8%, working capital takes longer to unwind and the group margin falls toward 14%. Investors conclude the service re-rating was exaggerated and value the company at 18–20x depressed EPS. Again, an EUR 8–10 share price becomes plausible. The historical evidence does not say this outcome is likely; it shows the loss path is economically coherent.
My final judgment separates company quality from entry price. Metso has become a far better business than either the old project-heavy Outotec or the newly merged 2020 entity. The 56% aftermarket share, 18% Minerals margin, broad product coverage and improving backlog create real resilience and a credible path to higher returns on capital. Management's service background and disciplined bolt-on M&A add confidence. The long-term copper-processing problem is favorable.
At EUR 18.19, new shareholders are paying close to my base fair value and materially above the conservative value. The 30x trailing P/E is manageable if the group reaches 17–18% margins and converts earnings into cash; it is unforgiving if growth normalizes before those targets arrive. Existing holders have enough operating evidence to justify staying invested. New capital lacks the conservative margin of safety that would turn a good industrial into an asymmetric purchase.

The base band is ±15% around the EUR 18.9 base scenario. The clearly-overvalued threshold begins approximately 10% above the EUR 23.8 optimistic scenario value. The current EUR 18.19 price falls inside the acceptable-hold band and far above the ideal-buy band, which is consistent with the Hold rating.
The principal research uncertainties are concentrated in five areas. Metso does not disclose aftermarket gross margin or EBITA separately, so the precise profit contribution of the 56% sales mix remains unknown. It does not disclose enough commodity-by-commodity order data to establish exactly how much current backlog is copper, iron ore, gold or other minerals. Large-order values are not always disclosed, limiting customer-concentration analysis. The 2025 reporting reclassification prevents a clean ten-year continuing-operations trend without extensive historical reconstruction. Finally, public aggregate analyst-estimate revision history was not sufficiently transparent to support a quantified consensus-revision claim.
A sixth, narrower uncertainty concerns the supplied statement about additional U.S. acquisitions in 2026. The primary disclosures reviewed through 2026-08-30 identify MRA as the completed 2026 acquisition, U.S. organic service investments, and the still-pending Flowrox technology transaction from Valmet; I found no separately identified completed U.S. acquisition and therefore excluded one from the analysis.
