Zhangzhou Pientzehuang is a state-controlled Chinese traditional-medicine group built around one legally protected product, and the report rates it Hold. Consolidated revenue flatters it: of 2025's CNY 9.001bn, pharmaceutical distribution contributed CNY 3.755bn at a gross margin of only 7.62%, while liver-disease medicines produced CNY 4.268bn at 61.29% and roughly 80% of group gross profit. Cosmetics, at CNY 567m and shrinking, is too small to move the case.
The 2025 result broke the previous decade's pattern: revenue fell 16.56% and attributable net profit fell 27.49% to CNY 2.159bn, reported as the first simultaneous revenue and profit decline since the 2003 listing. The exchange inquiry that followed disclosed the key number. Sales volume of higher-priced liver products fell 21% while cheaper products rose 41%, putting the damage in the economic flagship rather than low-margin distribution. Operating cash flow fell 94% to CNY 77m as inventory absorbed the cash, and the Q1 2026 rebound came from slower procurement rather than recovering demand: revenue was still down 12.74% and profit down 25.64%.
The legal moat is intact. Pien Tze Huang is an exclusive, first-class nationally protected formula built on regulated inputs such as natural musk and cattle gallstone, and it still earned a 62.18% gross margin in Q1 2026. What weakened is the demand-side half of scarcity. The classic pill's suggested retail price has stood at CNY 760 since 2023 while resellers quote roughly CNY 460 to 600, an inversion that kills the incentive to hoard ahead of the next increase. Cost relief is the more credible route back: natural gallstone spot prices have fallen about two thirds from their 2024 peak to CNY 550,000 per kilogram, though raw materials carried at historical cost delay the benefit into 2026 and possibly 2027.
At CNY 132.59 the stock trades near 42 times trailing earnings, some 73% below its 2021 peak, and a large drawdown from an extreme multiple is not cheapness. The report's conservative value is CNY 100 to 115 and its base case CNY 135 to 155, leaving the current price 15% to 33% above the conservative range and the margin-of-safety verdict at none, with an ideal buy zone of CNY 80 to 90. Three risks dominate: another year of double-digit decline in high-priced units, inventory that stays economically stranded even without an impairment charge, and multiple compression toward 25x to 30x, which alone would inflict a large loss on flat earnings. The closing stance: an existing holder can rationally wait out the inventory cycle given very low leverage, while new capital gets materially better risk and reward below CNY 90.
The above is a summary of the report's views and does not constitute investment advice. Markets carry risk; invest with caution.
EntradillaZhangzhou Pientzehuang is a state-controlled Chinese pharmaceutical group whose economics are dominated by the legally protected Pien Tze Huang liver-medicine franchise, alongside low-margin drug distribution and a smaller cosmetics business. 2025 revenue fell 16.56% to CNY9.001bn and attributable net profit fell 27.49% to CNY2.159bn, reported as the first simultaneous decline since the 2003 listing, and the SSE inquiry response disclosed that sales volume of higher-priced liver products fell 21% while cheaper products rose 41%. Rating Hold: the legal moat and a 62.18% Q1 franchise gross margin are intact, but at CNY132.59 the stock trades near 42x trailing earnings against a conservative value of CNY100–115, leaving no margin of safety.

Research summary
Zhangzhou Pientzehuang is easier to understand once the consolidated revenue line is ignored. In 2025 the group reported CNY 9.001bn of revenue, but CNY 3.755bn came from pharmaceutical distribution at a gross margin of only 7.62%. Cosmetics contributed CNY 567m at a much richer 57.54% margin, while liver-disease medicines generated CNY 4.268bn at a 61.29% gross margin. On those disclosed numbers, liver medicines contributed about CNY 2.62bn of gross profit, roughly four-fifths of the gross profit generated by the three major businesses. The economic heart of the company is still Pien Tze Huang and related liver-disease products. The distribution business makes the group look larger than its economic profit pool, while cosmetics remains too small to change the valuation case.
The 2025 numbers marked a clear break from the previous decade. Revenue fell 16.56% to CNY 9.001bn and attributable net profit fell 27.49% to CNY 2.159bn; Chinese financial media characterized this as the first simultaneous revenue-and-profit decline since the 2003 listing. Consolidated gross margin fell 6.31 percentage points to 36.43%. The balance sheet remained lightly leveraged, with year-end assets of CNY 17.56bn and equity of CNY 15.09bn, implying liabilities of about CNY 2.47bn and a 14.08% liabilities-to-assets ratio.
The central question is the durability of the scarcity-plus-price-increase model. The regulatory inquiry that followed the 2025 annual report gives the best answer available. Aggregate liver-disease-medicine sales volume rose, but the mix moved sharply in the wrong direction: sales volume of higher-priced products fell 21%, while lower-priced products rose 41%. The company explicitly said that this mix shift explains why reported liver-medicine volume increased while revenue fell 20%. That disclosure matters much more than the headline category-volume figure. The high-priced part of the franchise, which historically carried the scarcity economics, contracted.
The physical inventory data point in the same direction. Liver-medicine production rose 41.39% to 5.644m boxes in 2025, sales rose 25.81% to 5.270m boxes, and finished inventory consequently rose to 515,400 boxes, up 265.53%. The company told the Shanghai Stock Exchange that its long production cycle and advance production interacted with weaker second-half demand and slower sales, creating higher finished-goods inventories. This is direct evidence of a production-demand mismatch at the manufacturer, rather than a pure accounting anomaly.
The channel signal is more severe. The official suggested retail price for the classic Pien Tze Huang tablet remains CNY 760 after the May 2023 increase from CNY 590. That official price must be separated from secondary-market and dealer quotes. A September 2024 multi-region press survey found reseller buyback quotes around CNY 500 for recent stock and about CNY 460 for older stock; 2026 reporting continued to cite secondary-market quotes around CNY 460 and some retail channels around CNY 600. The company itself said the suggested terminal retail price had not been changed.
A resale price below the official retail price removes the economic incentive to hoard a product in anticipation of the next price increase. In 2021 the same product could trade around CNY 1,000–1,600 in shortage conditions, far above its official price. That speculative scarcity premium has reversed.
The core scarcity franchise is intact in law and gross margin, but the market’s old assumption that scarcity automatically converts every price increase into higher revenue and higher perceived asset value has already failed. The evidence supports a mixed diagnosis: genuine demand weakness in the expensive core SKU, accompanied by manufacturer and channel destocking. A theory of deliberate stockpiling alone cannot explain the company’s disclosed 21% fall in higher-priced product volume, weaker second-half market demand, and resale-price inversion.
Cash flow initially looks worse than the business and then, in Q1 2026, better than the business. Both appearances are misleading for the same reason: working capital. FY2025 operating cash flow collapsed 94.14% to CNY 77.0m. The annual-report cash-flow reconciliation shows that the increase in inventory consumed CNY 1.721bn of cash, operating receivables consumed another CNY 50m, and operating payables consumed CNY 223m. Without those three working-capital movements, operating cash generation would have been roughly CNY 2.07bn.
Q1 2026 then produced CNY 1.290bn of operating cash flow, up 40.84%, despite revenue falling 12.74% and attributable profit falling 25.64%. Customer cash receipts actually declined, from about CNY 3.04bn to CNY 2.68bn. The important swing was cash paid for merchandise and services, which fell from roughly CNY 1.71bn to CNY 1.02bn. Inventory also declined from CNY 6.679bn at year-end to CNY 6.278bn at March 31.
The working-capital evidence says FY2025 cash flow was depressed by inventory accumulation, while Q1 2026 cash flow was boosted mainly by procurement restraint and inventory release. Neither period, taken alone, measures the underlying demand trajectory. The P&L remains the cleaner current signal: Q1 revenue and profit were still falling, and the high-margin franchise had not yet returned to growth.
The raw-material cycle is the most credible route back to higher earnings. Natural cattle gallstone, one of the franchise’s key scarce animal-derived inputs, reached about CNY 1.65m per kilogram in June 2024 according to Health Times. Zhongyaocai Tiandi quoted CNY 550,000/kg on 2026-08-15, a decline of about two-thirds; reports of roughly CNY 500,000 imply a decline close to 70%.
But spot prices cannot be dropped directly into next-quarter gross margin. At the end of 2025 the company held CNY 4.811bn of raw materials, of which CNY 4.716bn, or 98.04% of raw materials, related to liver-disease medicines. That balance alone was about 2.85 times the entire 2025 liver-medicine cost of sales of roughly CNY 1.65bn. Not all of those raw materials are natural gallstone, and cost of sales includes more than raw materials, so the ratio cannot be converted into kilograms or an exact inventory duration. It does establish that the company is carrying a very large historical-cost pool.
The imported-cattle-gallstone channel is real rather than rumor. China opened a two-year pilot allowing qualified proprietary-Chinese-medicine manufacturers in selected regions to use imported bovine calculus beginning in 2025. Pientzehuang conducted a reported 200-gram Argentine trial import in January 2026, subsequently obtained an import approval, and by June had brought in the first batch intended for production use. Public disclosures located for this report do not give a commercial-scale kilogram figure for that production lot. The channel is strategically meaningful but not yet quantifiably material.
The raw-material decline cuts both ways. Existing high-cost inventory will continue passing through cost of sales, delaying margin improvement. New lower-cost purchases and an import route can eventually improve unit economics. Q1 2026 provides an empirical warning against front-running that recovery: liver-medicine gross margin was still 62.18%, down 1.18 percentage points year on year, even after gallstone spot prices had fallen heavily.
Cosmetics does not yet provide a second growth engine. Its 2025 revenue fell 24.64% to CNY 567m; Q1 2026 revenue fell another 36.38% to CNY 125.5m despite a 67.03% gross margin. The group has disclosed performance-management and excess-profit-sharing mechanisms for controlled subsidiaries, but the public numbers do not show a corresponding cosmetics demand recovery.
The balance sheet gives the company time. Year-end attributable equity was CNY 14.54bn. Short-term borrowing was about CNY 838m, concentrated in distribution subsidiaries. The group paid or proposed total 2025 cash dividends of CNY 1.792bn, equal to 83.01% of attributable profit. The controlling shareholder, Zhangzhou Jiulongjiang Group, also completed a CNY 499.998m increase in its holding in 2026, purchasing 3.171m shares and increasing its stake from about 50.97% to 51.50%; it committed not to reduce the acquired shares for 12 months after completion.
That shareholder purchase is a useful alignment signal, but the investment case turns on the consumer rather than the controller. The market is now trading three competing narratives: continued de-financialization of the core product, a working-capital and raw-material-cycle recovery, and the durability of an unusually protected brand after the speculative premium has disappeared.
The qualitative portrait is “company in transition.” The legal and supply-side moat remains unusually strong. The earnings model is being forced to move from repeated scarcity pricing toward actual consumer pull-through, mix discipline and cost control. Whether that transition succeeds cannot yet be established from one quarter of inventory release.
Vertical history, financial evolution, and market narrative
Origins and listing.
Pientzehuang did not originate as a founder-led modern pharmaceutical startup. Its institutional roots run through the former Zhangzhou Pharmaceutical Factory, founded in 1956. The listed company was established on 1999-12-28 through state-enterprise restructuring approved by the Fujian provincial government. The starting ownership was correspondingly state-heavy: Pientzehuang Group held 80% before the IPO, alongside other state-related and pharmaceutical shareholders.
That history matters because the moat was inherited rather than invented by the listed-company management team. Pien Tze Huang is an exclusive product and a national first-class protected traditional Chinese medicine. Company filings describe its ingredients as natural musk, cattle gallstone, snake bile and notoginseng. Earlier public material and contemporary press describe the formula and manufacturing process as subject to state secrecy protection.
The A-share IPO came in 2003. The company offered 40m shares at CNY 8.55 each, raising CNY 342m gross; post-issue share capital was 140m shares, implying a nominal issue-price equity value of about CNY 1.20bn. Trading began on the Shanghai Stock Exchange on 2003-06-16. The company later completed a rights issue in 2013, adding about 20.9m shares.
The IPO story was already recognizable: a protected traditional formula, scarce controlled inputs, established exports and a brand whose unit economics were far better than ordinary drug distribution. Contemporary historical material noted that Pien Tze Huang had long been an important Chinese proprietary-medicine export, particularly into Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
The company’s development since listing divides naturally into five stages.
The first was monetization of inherited scarcity, from the IPO through roughly 2013. Management repeatedly raised the selling price as costs and controlled-input constraints rose. A documented November 2007 adjustment increased the domestic ex-factory price from CNY 150 to CNY 180 per pill, with the company explicitly citing rising raw-material costs and quota restrictions. These increases taught the market to view Pien Tze Huang as a product whose nominal price could ratchet upward without normal consumer-goods elasticity.
The second stage, roughly 2014–2020, transformed that scarcity into a national premium-consumer narrative. The company continued to increase the price of the classic tablet, expanded branded distribution and built cosmetics as a second business. A June 2016 adjustment lifted the suggested domestic retail price from CNY 460 to CNY 500; another increase took it to CNY 530, and January 2020 lifted retail to CNY 590. A contemporary brokerage analysis estimated that 2020 core-drug revenue grew more than 20%, combining roughly an 11% price increase with volume growth.
The third stage was the 2020–2021 scarcity re-rating. The physical product became difficult to obtain through some channels, secondary prices moved far above official prices, and the stock was increasingly valued as a consumer-scarcity asset rather than an ordinary medicine manufacturer. The share price rose from CNY 167 on 2020-06-24 to CNY 428 on 2021-06-23, according to contemporary reporting, and later reached roughly CNY 491.88 in July 2021.
That re-rating outran even strong operating results. FY2021 revenue rose 23.2% to CNY 8.022bn and attributable profit rose 45.46% to CNY 2.431bn. The stock nevertheless carried a valuation measured in very high multiples of earnings, because investors were capitalizing decades of prospective price increases rather than merely the next year’s profit.
The fourth stage began with channel normalization and culminated in the May 2023 price decision. The official retail price rose from CNY 590 to CNY 760 per classic pill, a 28.8% increase and the largest recent step-up. Aggregated liver-medicine category data still looked healthy during parts of this period. But the company did not disclose a clean high-price-core-SKU volume series that lets an investor prove that the classic product itself achieved the earlier pattern of simultaneous price and unit growth.
That distinction became decisive later. The 2026 regulatory-inquiry response disclosed that the high-priced products inside the liver category suffered a 21% sales-volume decline in 2025 even as cheaper products rose 41%. This retroactively changes how the 2023 increase should be interpreted. Aggregate category volume was an inadequate measure of pricing power because lower-priced SKUs could mask declining demand for the economic flagship.
The fifth stage is the current one: de-financialization of the product, high-cost raw-material digestion and working-capital repair. Natural gallstone prices surged into 2024 while secondary-market Pien Tze Huang prices were already falling. The company responded to raw-material scarcity by building reserves; the balance sheet absorbed that decision through 2024 and 2025. When end-demand weakened in the second half of 2025, the same strategy produced exceptionally high inventory and weak cash conversion.
The share-price journey mirrors the business narrative. From CNY 491.88 at the 2021 peak to CNY 132.59 on 2026-08-14, the stock lost about 73% of its nominal peak value. That decline reflects both lower earnings and, more importantly, a major contraction of the valuation multiple attached to perpetual scarcity pricing.
The controller’s 2026 purchase occurred after that re-rating. Jiulongjiang Group announced a CNY 300–500m increase plan early in the year, executed purchases between February and April and completed the plan near the maximum amount at CNY 499.998m. Its ownership rose by 0.53 percentage point to 51.50%. The purchase does not resolve the demand question, but it does reduce the probability that the controlling shareholder itself is signaling a desire to exit at depressed prices.
Pricing history and what changed.
A complete price-history series is surprisingly difficult to reconstruct cleanly because public compilations mix ex-factory prices, suggested retail prices and individual market prices. The following table uses selected documented milestones and keeps the pricing basis explicit.
| Date | Price series | Before | After | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2005 | Domestic ex-factory, reported | CNY 125 | CNY 130 | 4.0% |
| 2007 | Domestic ex-factory | CNY 150 | CNY 180 | 20.0% |
| 2016 | Suggested domestic retail | CNY 460 | CNY 500 | 8.7% |
| 2017 | Suggested domestic retail, reported | CNY 500 | CNY 530 | 6.0% |
| 2020 | Suggested domestic retail | CNY 530 | CNY 590 | 11.3% |
| 2023 | Suggested domestic retail | CNY 590 | CNY 760 | 28.8% |
Historical compilations report more than twenty adjustments since the listing period, but exact event counts differ depending on whether ex-factory and retail adjustments are counted separately. The documented milestones above are more useful than pretending the two price series are interchangeable.
The 2023 increase was qualitatively different because secondary scarcity began moving against the official price. An official retail price of CNY 760 can remain unchanged while a reseller quotes CNY 500 because those prices describe different transactions. The former is the manufacturer’s suggested terminal price; the latter reflects what an intermediary will pay to take inventory risk from a holder.
That inversion changes the demand curve. Earlier scarcity periods rewarded buyers for obtaining stock at official price, because the resale market frequently valued the same physical item higher. Once reseller prices move below official retail, inventory held for appreciation becomes a losing position unless future scarcity returns. Demand consequently becomes more dependent on medicinal use, gifting utility and willingness to consume a CNY 760 pill rather than expected resale profit. This is an inference from the observed price structure, not a company-disclosed consumer survey.
Financial vertical review.
The past five years capture both the old model and its interruption.
| CNY bn except ratios | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 8.022 | 8.694 | 10.059 | 10.788 | 9.001 |
| Attributable net profit | 2.431 | 2.472 | 2.797 | 2.977 | 2.159 |
| Operating cash flow | 0.462 | 6.873 | 2.207 | 1.314 | 0.077 |
| OCF / attributable NP | 19.0% | 278.0% | 78.9% | 44.1% | 3.6% |
| Weighted ROE | n/a† | 23.50% | 22.64% | 21.36% | 14.84% |
†The table leaves 2021 weighted ROE blank rather than mixing a differently defined diluted-return statistic with subsequent annual-report figures. Five-year cumulative operating cash flow was about CNY 10.93bn against CNY 12.84bn of cumulative attributable net profit, a cash-conversion ratio of roughly 85%. The 2021–2022 cash-flow figures were distorted by the classification and subsequent maturity of large time deposits, so individual-year ratios should not be interpreted as operating economics in isolation.
This table shows why the ten-year quality screen that surfaced Pientzehuang can mislead an investor today. ROE above 20%, steady profit growth and low leverage accurately describe the old regime. The 2025 ROE decline to 14.84% occurred before a meaningful balance-sheet impairment: equity increased, while earnings contracted. That is exactly what a mature high-return franchise looks like when its incremental economics weaken.
Cash conversion deteriorated before 2025. Operating cash flow fell from CNY 2.207bn in 2023 to CNY 1.314bn in 2024 while profit rose. The 2024 annual report attributed the decline partly to heavier raw-material purchasing. The 2025 inventory build was the second year of the same capital-allocation choice, not a sudden single-quarter event.
Inventory increased to CNY 6.679bn at the end of 2025 from CNY 4.967bn a year earlier. Gross raw materials were about CNY 4.811bn and finished goods CNY 1.464bn. The regulatory inquiry disclosed that CNY 4.716bn of raw materials were tied to liver-disease medicines and that liver finished goods were about CNY 533m.
The company’s impairment reserve was very small relative to inventory. Its total inventory write-down reserve rate was 0.28%, compared with an average 2.18% among the peer set shown to the exchange; within manufacturing the reserve rate was only 0.07%. The company explained that most core raw materials and products carry high gross margins, long usable lives and net realizable values above cost, while provisions were concentrated in lower-margin generic medicines and near-expiry items.
That accounting treatment can be reasonable even when commodity prices collapse. A fall in cattle-gallstone replacement cost does not automatically make a CNY 760 product’s net realizable value lower than its historical production cost. The larger economic issue is margin latency: high-cost inventory can remain fully recoverable while depressing cost of sales for quarters or years.
The balance sheet is correspondingly unusual. Financial leverage is low, but working capital is high. At year-end 2025, inventory equaled roughly 44% of consolidated equity and 74% of annual revenue. A large part of shareholder capital is effectively financing rare medicinal materials and finished product rather than fixed assets.
Capital expenditure is moderate in cash terms but the project pipeline is larger. Cash paid for property, equipment, intangibles and other long-term assets was CNY 340m in 2025, down from CNY 1.068bn in 2024. Year-end construction in progress nevertheless reached CNY 1.248bn, including the Pientzehuang technology building, health-and-beauty park and a large Beijing renovation project.
Depreciation and amortization in the cash-flow reconciliation was about CNY 129m including right-of-use-asset amortization. I estimate maintenance capital expenditure at CNY 100–150m, broadly around depreciation/amortization, leaving roughly CNY 190–240m of 2025 cash capex as expansion, upgrade or strategic-project expenditure. That split is an analytical estimate; management does not disclose maintenance versus growth capex explicitly.
The dividend record is still shareholder-friendly. The 2025 final proposal was CNY 1.57 per share on top of a CNY 1.40 interim dividend, producing CNY 2.97 for the year and an 83.01% cash-payout ratio. At CNY 132.59, that historical dividend is a yield of about 2.24%.
Price and valuation history.
The stock’s old valuation regime effectively capitalized a continuing sequence of price increases. Around the 2021 scarcity peak, the share price exceeded CNY 400 while annual earnings per share were only a few renminbi; contemporaneous valuation work placed the stock at multiples well above the market and often around or above 100 times earnings, depending on the earnings period used.
At CNY 132.59, the stock trades at about 37.0 times FY2025 EPS of CNY 3.58. A more current trailing figure is harsher: replacing Q1 2025 profit of about CNY 1.000bn with Q1 2026 profit of CNY 743m gives trailing attributable profit of roughly CNY 1.902bn, or CNY 3.15 per share. The resulting trailing P/E is about 42.1 times, consistent with the current market-data screen. Price-to-book on attributable equity is roughly 5.5 times.
The multiple has collapsed relative to the scarcity bubble while remaining high for a company with negative trailing earnings growth. The market no longer values Pientzehuang as an unconstrained compounder, yet it still assigns a large premium for the legally protected formula, brand and potential margin recovery.
Business model, moat, industry, and horizontal peers
Where the profit comes from.
The segment split shows why consolidated gross margin should never be used as the franchise margin.
| 2025 | Liver-disease medicine | Pharma distribution | Cosmetics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue, CNY bn | 4.268 | 3.755 | 0.567 |
| Revenue growth | -19.63% | -8.05% | -24.64% |
| Gross margin | 61.29% | 7.62% | 57.54% |
| Approx. gross profit, CNY bn | 2.616 | 0.286 | 0.326 |
| Approx. share of consolidated gross profit | 79.7% | 8.7% | 9.9% |
The liver franchise alone generated roughly nine times the gross profit of distribution despite only modestly more revenue. Distribution is strategically useful for channel coverage and procurement but economically resembles a low-margin wholesaler. Cosmetics has attractive product-level gross margin but insufficient scale and, currently, shrinking demand.
Q1 2026 sharpened the concentration. Liver-disease-medicine revenue was CNY 1.610bn, down 12.18%, at a 62.18% gross margin. Distribution revenue was CNY 903m at only 6.18% gross margin. Cosmetics fell 36.38% to CNY 125.5m even though its gross margin was 67.03%.
The distribution margin declined from 11.36% in 2024 to 7.62% in 2025, and then to 6.18% in Q1 2026. The Shanghai Stock Exchange inquiry specifically asked about the decline and about related-party purchases from Fujian Tongchun, which were CNY 396m in 2025, as well as CNY 222m of procurement from new supplier Hunan Medicine Group. The existence of these transactions does not establish wrongdoing; the regulatory scrutiny does show that distribution economics deserve separate treatment from the franchise.
Cost structure is dominated by variable raw materials in the core medicine, with selling, administration and R&D much smaller than cost of goods. In 2025 consolidated sales expense was about CNY 401m, management expense CNY 359m and R&D CNY 252m. That leaves the core franchise with considerable gross-profit sensitivity to medicinal-material cost and sales mix, while the group has less ability to offset a deep gross-margin decline through overhead cuts alone.
The moat.
The first moat is legal and regulatory exclusivity. Pien Tze Huang is an exclusive, first-class nationally protected TCM product. The classic formula uses ingredients including natural musk and cattle gallstone; the product’s history, formula protection and controlled manufacturing regime substantially raise the barrier to creating an identical legal substitute.
Natural musk adds a second layer. Chinese wildlife and drug regulations restrict use of natural musk. The former State Forestry Administration published lists of enterprises and products permitted to manufacture medicines containing natural musk sourced from captive-bred musk deer, and official rules require controlled storage and approved use. This makes input access itself partly regulated.
The third moat is brand memory. More than two decades of repeated price increases, long-standing domestic and overseas use, cultural heritage and the drug’s association with scarcity created consumer willingness to pay far above ordinary generic-TCM levels. That brand premium remains visible in a liver-medicine gross margin above 60% even during the current downturn.
The fourth is supply-chain capability. A company able to secure regulated musk, accumulate scarce raw materials and become an early participant in imported natural gallstone has a procurement advantage over an ordinary entrant. The same capability creates capital intensity when management stocks material at cyclical peaks.
The economic moat remains strong around legal exclusivity and input access; the part of the moat that weakened is consumers’ willingness to treat every official price increase as proof of future scarcity. The difference is important. A protected formula prevents direct imitation. It cannot compel a consumer to buy at CNY 760, or compel a reseller to value the pill above that price.
Network effects, switching costs and technology leadership are not meaningful moat sources here. A patient does not face a software-style switching cost. The competitive advantage is closer to a protected heritage luxury-health product with medicinal indications.
Governance and capital allocation.
The company is still state-controlled. Jiulongjiang Group owned 51.50% after its 2026 increase. The listed company’s responsible officer and chairman at the 2025 annual-report approval was Lin Zhihui; He Wei was the officer responsible for accounting work, with Zheng Zhiping responsible for the accounting organization. The 2025 financial statements received a standard unqualified audit opinion from Grant Thornton China.
The state-control structure provides ownership stability but creates a conventional SOE governance discount: minority investors have little influence over strategy, diversification or strategic inventory policy. There is no dual-class share structure or VIE arrangement in the A-share issuer. Public information reviewed for this report did not establish a material accounting-fraud finding against the listed company. The 2025 annual report did, however, trigger an unusually detailed exchange inquiry covering declining earnings, customer and supplier structure, related-party transactions and inventory valuation.
Management deserves credit for preserving a low-leverage balance sheet and paying large dividends. The harder capital-allocation question is the CNY 6.7bn inventory position. Management’s strategic-reserve rationale is logical for natural musk and gallstone, yet the decision transferred commodity-price risk and demand risk onto the balance sheet at exactly the point when gallstone prices were historically high.
The cosmetics expansion also needs a harder hurdle rate. Year-end construction in progress included the health-and-beauty park and cosmetics third-phase project while cosmetics revenue was contracting rapidly. Continuing investment can be rational if management expects a brand rebuild; current numbers have not validated that expectation.
I therefore score management credibility as medium rather than high. There is no balance-sheet recklessness, and the controller is demonstrably buying shares. Yet the inventory cycle, weak diversification returns and limited disclosure of commercially sensitive core-input quantities prevent a stronger judgment.
Industry structure and cycle.
Pientzehuang belongs to several cycles at once. Medical need has defensive qualities, while premium gifting and health-preservation spending are consumer-cyclical. Manufacturer and dealer stock create an inventory cycle, natural gallstone adds a commodity-price cycle, and raw-material quotas plus TCM reimbursement, procurement and drug regulation add a policy cycle.
China’s broader pharmaceutical market was soft in 2025. CR Sanjiu’s annual report, citing Minet data, said the Chinese drug market declined 1.0% year on year in the first nine months of 2025. Retail pharmacies plus B2C grew 5.5%, with B2C up 29.1% and O2O drug sales up 29.6%, while hospital-terminal sales fell 2.5%. This suggests a channel shift toward online purchasing rather than a uniform collapse in medicine consumption.
Pien Tze Huang is unusually exposed to discretionary premium demand within that market. Company filings do not publish a reliable split among medicinal consumption, gifting and investment-like stockpiling. Press surveys have offered estimates, but I do not use them in valuation because they are not company-verified. The resale-price behavior itself is sufficient evidence that non-medical stocking demand existed and subsequently weakened.
Policy is supportive of TCM as an industrial category but increasingly emphasizes clinical value, quality, traceability and stable raw-material supply. The 2026–2030 TCM Industrial High-Quality Development Implementation Plan calls for stronger raw-material security, higher-standard production bases, digital traceability, support for well-known proprietary medicines and development of TCM-related health and cosmetics products. It also explicitly recognizes raw-material supply stability as a core industrial issue.
That policy backdrop helps Pientzehuang’s protected-brand status but does not guarantee premium pricing. National healthcare policy continues to emphasize cost control and evidence-based value across medicines; Pientzehuang’s main valuation driver is still out-of-pocket brand demand rather than the policy support headline.
The product also spans OTC and medical contexts. The company publishes an “OTC version” leaflet for Pien Tze Huang with indications focused on sores and traumatic injury, while a 2020 company announcement concerning NMPA registration for the same approval number described the registered product’s indications as including acute and chronic viral hepatitis and noted work on a possible oncology indication expansion. The coexistence of these contexts makes a simple “OTC consumer drug” classification inadequate.
Within the base-date research set, I could not establish from a current primary National Healthcare Security Administration source the exact reimbursement treatment applicable to every Pien Tze Huang presentation and indication. I therefore assume no reimbursement-driven volume acceleration in the valuation.
The peer set.
Pientzehuang has no direct listed duplicate. Its legal formula is unique, so the useful peer set should reflect pieces of the economics rather than superficial industry classification.
Yunnan Baiyao is the strongest broad franchise comparator: another heritage TCM brand with protected intellectual property, but one that has diversified far more successfully into consumer-health products. Its Q1 2026 revenue rose 7.02% to CNY 11.603bn and attributable profit rose 5.31% to CNY 2.037bn. Its much larger profit base and diversification mean investors are less dependent on one flagship medicine.
Beijing Tong Ren Tang provides the heritage-TCM and multi-product comparison. Its Q1 2026 revenue fell 11.59% to CNY 4.664bn and attributable profit fell 19.07% to CNY 471m. Its breadth of formulas and retail ecosystem dilute product-specific upside but also reduce the single-SKU risk that dominates Pientzehuang.
Dong-E-E-Jiao is the most useful economic analogue for scarce-animal-input premium wellness consumption. It sells a heritage tonic rather than an identical medicinal formula, but both businesses depend on consumers assigning substantial value to branded products derived from animal-origin inputs. Dong-E-E-Jiao’s 2025 revenue was CNY 6.700bn and attributable profit CNY 1.739bn, up 8.83% and 11.66%, respectively, on the company’s adjusted comparative basis.
China Resources Sanjiu is the modern branded-OTC counterexample. It has built a broad consumer-health portfolio, extensive national retail reach and a much larger product-development platform. FY2025 revenue rose 14.43% to CNY 31.603bn while attributable profit rose only 1.58% to CNY 3.421bn; Q1 2026 revenue rose 18.62% while profit fell 15.29%, partly reflecting the complexity of its enlarged portfolio and integration.
The current cross-section looks like this:
| Latest reported quarter | Pientzehuang | Yunnan Baiyao | Tong Ren Tang | Dong-E-E-Jiao | CR Sanjiu |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue, CNY bn | 2.741 | 11.603 | 4.664 | 1.814 | 8.130 |
| Revenue YoY | -12.74% | +7.02% | -11.59% | +5.52% | +18.62% |
| Attributable NP, CNY bn | 0.743 | 2.037 | 0.471 | 0.455 | 1.076 |
| NP YoY | -25.64% | +5.31% | -19.07% | +7.14% | -15.29% |
The figures are Q1 2026. Dong-E-E-Jiao’s Q1 result is from the company-result data captured by market-data aggregation; the other figures are directly reproduced from quarterly filings or exchange-hosted filings.
The group portrait is more useful than ranking these numbers. Yunnan Baiyao became a diversified consumer-health franchise. Tong Ren Tang remained a broad traditional-medicine institution, and Dong-E-E-Jiao is a narrower premium-tonic franchise with an animal-input dependency. CR Sanjiu became a branded OTC and pharmaceutical platform. Pientzehuang remained the most concentrated scarcity franchise.
That concentration explains why Pientzehuang can earn exceptional product margins in strong periods and why a 21% decline in its expensive core category matters disproportionately. The peers have more ways to compensate when one SKU weakens.
The valuation premium is still wide. Pientzehuang’s current trailing P/E is about 42x. The latest prior-session quote captured for Yunnan Baiyao was CNY 50.91; using its 2025 attributable profit implied by the disclosed CNY 4.643bn dividend equal to 90.09% of profit gives a FY2025 P/E around 18x. CR Sanjiu’s CNY 25.24 screen price and 2025 profit imply a low-teens multiple, although acquisition-related changes make that comparison less clean.
Pientzehuang trades at a large premium despite currently weaker growth than the best-performing peers. The premium can be defended by formula exclusivity and margin potential. It cannot be defended by current earnings momentum.
Its ecological niche is “protected premium franchise,” not industry-scale leader. A direct competitor is unlikely to recreate the same formula. The main competitive threat comes from substitution of spending: cheaper branded TCM, other wellness products, hospital medicines for clinical needs, and consumers simply refusing the premium price. That makes demand elasticity more important than nominal market share.
Current fundamentals, valuation, and expectation gap
The last four reported quarters.
The deterioration accelerated through the second half of 2025 and then partially stabilized in Q1 2026.
| CNY bn | Q2 2025 | Q3 2025 | Q4 2025 | Q1 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 2.237 | 2.064 | 1.559 | 2.741 |
| Attributable net profit | 0.443 | 0.687 | 0.029 | 0.743 |
| Operating cash flow | -0.540 | 0.111 | -0.410 | 1.290 |
The 2025 quarterly numbers come from the annual report; Q1 2026 comes from the first-quarter filing. Q4’s near-zero attributable profit should not be extrapolated mechanically, but it shows how much earnings can deteriorate when sales mix, raw-material costs and working capital move together.
Q1 2026 was not an earnings recovery. Revenue fell 12.74%, attributable profit fell 25.64%, adjusted attributable profit fell 27.73%, and consolidated/main-business gross margin remained under pressure. Liver medicine was down 12.18%; cosmetics was down 36.38%.
What improved was cash and inventory. Inventory fell CNY 401m in three months, while procurement cash payments fell by roughly CNY 692m year on year. This is an early indication that management has stopped building working capital at the FY2025 pace.
It is too early to call channel normalization complete. Dealer inventory quantities are not disclosed in the annual report or exchange response. Manufacturer inventory is visible; channel inventory is not. A falling factory inventory number can result from lower procurement and production even if consumer sell-through remains soft.
The most valuable new disclosure is still the annual-report inquiry: higher-priced product volumes fell 21%. Until that figure stabilizes, reported aggregate liver-volume growth has low information value.
Raw materials: when the cost tailwind arrives.
Natural cattle gallstone fell from about CNY 1.65m/kg at the 2024 peak to CNY 550,000/kg on 2026-08-15, with some 2026 quotes around CNY 500,000. A buyer contracting fresh material today faces a radically different spot-cost environment.
The inventory pool delays the benefit. Liver-related raw materials of CNY 4.716bn compare with about CNY 1.652bn of 2025 liver-disease cost of sales. Even allowing for non-gallstone materials and nonmaterial production costs, the balance-sheet scale argues against a one-quarter cost reset.
I expect the transition to run through 2026 and potentially into 2027. That is an inference, not management guidance. The exact timing cannot be calculated because the company withheld commercially sensitive core-product raw-material quantities, procurement prices and supply-chain details in the SSE response.
Accounting impairment is a separate question. The company says the high-margin core products and materials still carry net realizable values above cost, so the current risk is predominantly cost-of-sales drag rather than a mandatory mark-to-market loss on all old gallstone inventory. A sustained collapse in realized product prices would change that conclusion because it would reduce net realizable value.
The raw-material cycle offers a credible 2027 margin tailwind, but the scale and age of inventory mean the stock should not be valued as though CNY 500,000–550,000/kg gallstone immediately replaces 2024 procurement cost.
The imported supply route helps the forward side of the equation. The NMPA/GACC pilot is authorized for two years and includes Fujian. Pientzehuang has moved from a 200-gram trial shipment to an approved production-use route from Argentina. Public information through 2026-08-15 does not disclose enough quantity to claim a material percentage of annual demand.
What the market is trading.
At CNY 132.59, the stock is trading a recovery expectation rather than current growth. A 42x trailing multiple cannot be justified by a Q1 profit decline of 26% alone. Investors are capitalizing some combination of lower future input cost, inventory normalization, a floor under the premium brand, TCM-policy support and the controller’s purchase.
The market has already removed much of the 2021 scarcity premium: the stock is roughly 73% below its nominal peak. But a large drawdown from an extreme multiple does not itself create undervaluation. The current market capitalization still approaches CNY 80bn for trailing attributable earnings around CNY 1.90bn.
The bull/bear disagreement can be stated precisely.
Bulls can point to a protected formula, continued 62% liver-product gross margin under unusually bad conditions, falling gallstone cost, an emerging import route, a lightly levered balance sheet and the first quarter of inventory decline. The business has enough financial resilience to wait for old cost layers to clear.
Bears can point to the 21% fall in high-priced-product volume, official-retail/resale inversion, CNY 6.3bn of remaining Q1 inventory, declining Q1 profit, cosmetics contraction and a valuation still above 40x trailing earnings. These facts allow a very different interpretation: the cost cycle may improve margins while the demand curve has permanently shifted.
The evidence currently favors neither a full structural collapse nor a clean cyclical rebound. It does favor treating the old “raise price, scarcity increases, volume holds” model as impaired until the high-priced SKU proves otherwise.
Cash-flow passthrough before valuation.
Five-year cumulative operating cash flow was about CNY 10.93bn versus CNY 12.84bn of attributable profit, or 85%. The figure is acceptable but not pristine, and the annual pattern is extremely volatile because of term-deposit accounting in 2021–2022 and raw-material inventory accumulation in 2024–2025.
Reported 2025 free cash flow before acquisitions and financial investments was negative: CNY 77m of operating cash less CNY 340m of property/intangible capex equals roughly negative CNY 263m. That makes the reported FCF yield slightly negative at the current CNY 80bn market capitalization.
For owner earnings, I normalize the unusual working-capital build. Adding back the CNY 1.721bn inventory increase, CNY 50m increase in operating receivables and CNY 223m reduction in operating payables to reported operating cash flow produces roughly CNY 2.07bn of operating cash before those working-capital swings. After my CNY 100–150m maintenance-capex estimate, normalized 2025 owner earnings are about CNY 1.92–1.97bn.
At CNY 79.99bn market capitalization, that normalized owner-earnings yield is about 2.4%, equivalent to approximately 41x owner earnings. The reported cash figure and normalized owner-earnings figure differ by far more than 30%, so the valuation scenarios below use normalized owner earnings rather than reported 2025 free cash flow or accounting EPS alone.
This is deliberately conservative about working capital in one respect and generous in another. It assumes the full FY2025 inventory increase was exceptional rather than permanently required. If CNY 6bn-plus inventory becomes the permanent operating norm and must continue growing, normalized owner earnings are lower.
Historical and peer valuation.
Current trailing P/E is about 42x, FY2025 P/E about 37x, price-to-book about 5.5x and historical dividend yield about 2.2%. This is radically below the 2021 scarcity-era valuation but still an expensive absolute multiple for contracting earnings.
I do not assign a precise historical percentile because doing so credibly requires a clean daily, point-in-time multiple series adjusted for each reporting date; the primary filings do not provide that data. The defensible statement is narrower: the current multiple is far below the 2021 triple-digit valuation regime and remains well above the valuation of diversified TCM/consumer-health peers such as Yunnan Baiyao.
That premium is justified only if the protected franchise returns to at least stable high-priced-unit demand and recovers margin. Formula exclusivity alone does not make 42x owner earnings inexpensive.
Absolute valuation.
I use normalized owner earnings and a P/E-equivalent capitalization framework. For a protected consumer-health franchise, this is more transparent than a long-duration DCF whose terminal value would dominate the answer. The assumptions below capitalize a normalized 2027–2028 earnings state into present fair value, with lower multiples than the scarcity era.
| Dimension | Conservative | Base | Optimistic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core high-price volume | Further declines, then flat | Stabilizes through 2026–27 | Returns to mid-single-digit growth |
| Liver gross margin | 58–62% | 64–68% | 69–73% |
| Normalized owner earnings | CNY 2.0–2.2bn | CNY 2.5–2.8bn | CNY 3.1–3.4bn |
| P/owner-earnings range | 29–31x | 32–34x | 35–37x |
| Implied present value/share | CNY 100–115 | CNY 135–155 | CNY 180–210 |
| Implied upside from CNY 132.59 | -25% to -13% | +2% to +17% | +36% to +58% |
| Main catalyst | Cost normalization | Volume stabilization plus cost relief | Renewed volume and margin cycle |
| Permanent-loss trigger | High-price units keep falling >10% p.a. | Recovery fails after inventory clears | Premium demand recovers only temporarily |
The conservative case assumes Pientzehuang keeps its protected-franchise status but loses part of the discretionary premium demand. The base case requires the high-priced product to stop shrinking and assumes lower gallstone procurement costs ultimately lift gross margin. The optimistic case requires both renewed demand and substantially better raw-material economics. None assumes a return to the 2021 scarcity multiple.
This is valuation-scenario analysis within a research framework, not investment advice.
The corresponding price-signal ranges derived from those scenarios are:
- A ≥20% margin of safety below the conservative value requires roughly CNY 80–90.
- A base-case hold zone, within about ±15% of the CNY 145 midpoint of base value, is approximately CNY 125–165.
- A price clearly above the optimistic valuation requires roughly CNY 235 or more; I use CNY 235–255 as the overvaluation band.
Expectation gap.
The next report needs to answer three questions. First, did the high-priced liver-product volume decline improve from the 2025 rate of minus 21%? Second, did inventory continue to fall without a further revenue collapse? Third, did liver gross margin begin moving upward as cheaper raw-material purchases entered production?
A quarter showing lower inventory and stronger cash flow but another double-digit fall in the high-priced core would support the bear interpretation: working-capital cleanup without demand recovery. A quarter showing stable high-price volumes, falling inventory and margin expansion would materially increase confidence in the cyclical-reversal case.
Cosmetics is a secondary expectation gap. At minus 36.38% Q1 revenue growth, stabilization would help sentiment, but the business is too small to compensate for another large decline in the core.
Margin-of-safety recheck.
The current CNY 132.59 price is 15–33% above the conservative CNY 100–115 fair-value range. The margin of safety to the conservative case is therefore zero.
The most fragile base-case assumption is high-priced-core volume stabilization. The midpoint base valuation uses roughly CNY 2.65bn of normalized owner earnings. Current normalized owner earnings are around CNY 1.95bn, so the base case requires about CNY 0.70bn of recovery. If only 70% of that incremental recovery arrives, owner earnings would be roughly CNY 2.44bn. At a 33x multiple, value is about CNY 133–134 per share, essentially the current price.
If earnings remain flat for three years at approximately the current normalized owner-earnings level and the current valuation multiple persists, an 80% payout ratio would generate only about a 2% annual cash return. If the terminal multiple instead falls to 30x, the combination of flat earnings and dividends would produce a negative annualized total return in the high-single digits. The investment needs earnings recovery, sustained premium valuation, or both.
This is not presently a “cheap compounder” setup. It is a protected franchise priced around base-case recovery while the most important demand data point remains negative.
Margin-of-safety sufficiency verdict: none.
At CNY 132.59, the market gives investors little compensation for the possibility that lower gallstone cost repairs margins while high-priced-product demand fails to recover.
Risks, catalysts, and tracking dashboard
The first permanent-loss risk is erosion of high-priced-core demand. I judge the probability high and impact high because the deterioration has already appeared in company disclosure: 2025 high-priced liver-product volume fell 21%. The transmission path runs directly from lower flagship units to mix, gross profit and then valuation. The observable variables are high-price product volume, liver revenue and the gap between official retail and market transaction prices. A second year of double-digit flagship-volume decline would make a structural-demand thesis considerably stronger.
The second risk is inventory becoming economically stranded even without an accounting impairment. Probability is medium to high and impact high. At CNY 6.278bn after Q1, inventory is still enormous relative to annual earnings. A high-cost raw-material pool can remain technically recoverable while producing below-normal margins for years. If finished-goods inventory begins rising again while high-priced volume remains negative, the company would face both slower turnover and delayed raw-material cost relief.
The third risk is an adverse raw-material reversal. Probability is medium and impact medium-to-high. Natural gallstone has already fallen sharply, so the forward cost setup is favorable. Yet natural musk is still regulated and cattle-gallstone supply still specialized. If gallstone returned above CNY 1.0m/kg before old inventory was fully processed, the expected margin-repair window could disappear. The import pilot reduces this risk but public scale is not yet sufficient to quantify the hedge.
The fourth risk is diversification consuming capital without building a second franchise. Probability is medium and impact medium. Cosmetics revenue fell 24.64% in 2025 and 36.38% in Q1 2026 while the group continued developing health-and-beauty infrastructure. A multi-year cosmetics decline would leave Pientzehuang even more dependent on one premium drug and turn some expansion capex into a low-return asset base.
The fifth is valuation compression. Probability is medium-to-high and impact high because current trailing P/E is about 42x. A protected franchise can sustain a premium multiple, but flat earnings at 42x produce a weak expected return. A re-rating toward 25–30x without an earnings recovery could cause a large equity loss even if the company remains profitable and debt-light.
The sixth is information opacity around the very variables that matter most. Probability that disclosure remains incomplete is high; financial impact is indirect but potentially material. The SSE response expressly withheld parts of core-product supply-chain, raw-material and operating-strategy information under commercial-secrecy provisions. The disclosure is legally understandable. It also prevents outside investors from determining natural-gallstone kilograms, exact historical cost layers and dealer-level inventory with precision.
The permanent-loss risk comes primarily from paying a premium multiple for a franchise whose legal moat survives while its marginal consumer is becoming more price-sensitive. Leverage is a secondary risk.
Positive catalysts over the next 12–24 months would be a return of the expensive core SKU to stable unit sales, continued manufacturer-inventory decline, liver gross margin above 65%, disclosed commercial-scale imported gallstone usage, and a convergence of market transaction prices toward the CNY 760 official retail price without renewed speculative hoarding.
A second positive catalyst is raw-material cost rollover. Spot gallstone at CNY 550,000/kg is low enough relative to the 2024 peak to create substantial unit-cost relief once the procurement layers change. The condition that matters is that demand remains strong enough to preserve selling price and accelerate old-inventory turnover.
Negative catalysts are more immediate: another double-digit decline in high-price product volume, year-end inventory returning above CNY 6.7bn, liver gross margin below 60%, secondary/reseller prices remaining below CNY 500–600, or a reversal in cattle-gallstone cost. Cosmetics falling another 20–30% would reinforce the failure of diversification even though it would be less important to group profit.
The tracking dashboard should focus on variables that distinguish demand recovery from simple working-capital contraction.

The operating and gross-margin data should be taken from company quarterly operating announcements and regulatory filings. Inventory and cash flow come from the balance sheet and cash-flow statement. Natural gallstone can be tracked through major Chinese medicinal-material price services; because spot markets can be thin, a multi-week range is more meaningful than one quote. Secondary-market prices should remain a sentiment and channel-health indicator rather than be treated as official company pricing.
The 2026 interim report scheduled for 2026-08-29 is the next major test. The most useful disclosure would be a repeat of the high-price-versus-low-price volume split introduced in the SSE inquiry response. Without that split, aggregate “liver-disease medicine volume” can again obscure the flagship product.
Cross-synthesis, key data, uncertainties, and sources
Looking across the full history, Pientzehuang has genuinely proven three capabilities: preserving the regulatory and cultural exclusivity of an old formula, obtaining scarce regulated raw materials, and converting that scarcity into unusually high gross margins. Those are durable capabilities. They explain why the core business can still produce a 62% gross margin while reported earnings are under severe pressure.
The company also benefited from a specific era. Rising household wealth, premium gifting, enthusiasm for heritage health products and a secondary market that increasingly treated the classic pill as a scarce asset all reinforced management’s price increases. By 2021, the product and the stock were carrying scarcity premiums simultaneously.
That era created an analytical trap. A price increase could appear to prove pricing power while part of the resulting demand was itself driven by expectations of future scarcity and future price increases. Once secondary prices dropped below official retail, that reinforcing mechanism reversed. The 2025 disclosure of a 21% decline in high-priced-product units confirms that the change reached the operating business, rather than remaining a stock-market narrative.
The scarcity model has two components. Supply scarcity remains. Natural musk is regulated, natural gallstone is specialized, the formula remains protected and the company retains exclusive brand rights. Demand-side scarcity has weakened: consumers and intermediaries no longer universally behave as though every pill purchased today will be worth more tomorrow.
That distinction settles the central question. I think the business is cyclically stressed around raw materials and working capital, while its historical pricing algorithm has suffered a structural break. A cyclical cost recovery is probable if gallstone remains near current levels. A return to automatic price-led compounding is not a reasonable base-case assumption.
The inventory evidence supports that view. Management did intentionally build rare-material reserves, but production outrunning demand also drove the finished-goods buildup. The company itself cited weak second-half demand and slower sales. The core high-price SKU volume fell. Channel prices inverted. Those facts collectively make “deliberate stockpiling only” an insufficient explanation.
The Q1 cash rebound does not overturn that judgment. It proves that working capital can release cash rapidly once procurement slows. It does not prove consumer recovery. Customer receipts fell year on year while purchases paid fell much more. Inventory declined by CNY 401m, while revenue and profit were still down double digits.
Looking three years out, cost rather than price is the easiest part of the bull thesis. A roughly two-thirds decline in natural-gallstone spot cost is large enough to matter. The import pilot creates an additional supply route. The uncertainty is timing: CNY 4.716bn of liver-related raw materials means historical layers can influence cost for a long period.
The demand side is harder. At CNY 760 official retail, management can preserve the sticker price while real channel economics weaken. Maintaining official price is a necessary but inadequate test of pricing power. The better tests are expensive-SKU unit volume and transaction-price convergence. If expensive-unit volume stabilizes and reseller discounts narrow, the protected franchise has found a new clearing price. If units keep falling while official price remains fixed, nominal pricing power will be concealing real demand destruction.
Horizontally, no peer has the same combination of formula protection and product concentration. Yunnan Baiyao has converted a heritage brand into a broader consumer-health portfolio. CR Sanjiu owns scale, multi-brand channels and a larger innovation platform. Tong Ren Tang owns heritage across many formulas. Dong-E-E-Jiao shares more of the premium animal-input and wellness economics. Pientzehuang’s advantage is deeper product exclusivity. Its disadvantage is a much narrower bridge between consumer demand and group profit.
The balance sheet prevents the current downturn from becoming a financing crisis. Liabilities are only about 14% of assets; dividends remain large; the controller increased its holding. That means the bear case should be framed around return on capital and valuation, not solvency.
This makes Pientzehuang a difficult stock to short conceptually and a difficult stock to buy cheaply. The protected formula prevents a conventional competitive wipeout. The 42x trailing P/E prevents an investor from being paid much for current uncertainty.
The next 12 months are primarily about proof. Inventory needs to keep falling, but that alone is insufficient. High-price volume needs to stop falling. Liver margin should begin to recover. Those three indicators together would identify a genuine turn.
The three-year variable is the normalized gross margin after high-cost raw-material layers are processed. A liver margin returning toward the upper 60s with stable units would restore a large portion of earnings power even without another price increase.
The five-year variable is more strategic: can management grow nominal owner earnings without relying on repeated large increases in the classic pill’s official retail price? Cosmetics has not supplied that answer. Distribution will not supply it because its margin is too low. The company eventually needs either deeper core penetration, successful new medicines, a genuinely revived consumer-health franchise or a renewed willingness of customers to accept higher real prices.
At current valuation, the market already gives management partial credit for that transition. The base-case value of CNY 135–155 brackets the current CNY 132.59 price near its lower edge, but the conservative value is only CNY 100–115. That asymmetry is why a much lower entry price is required for an attractive margin of safety.
Bull reasons.
- The liver franchise retained a 62.18% gross margin in Q1 2026 despite a severe demand and raw-material shock, showing that the protected formula still carries substantial economic rent.
- Natural-gallstone spot prices have fallen roughly two-thirds from the 2024 documented peak, creating a significant future cost tailwind once high-cost inventory layers clear.
- Q1 inventory fell about CNY 401m and operating cash flow recovered to CNY 1.29bn, showing that the FY2025 working-capital drain is reversible when procurement slows.
- The balance sheet remains lightly leveraged and the 51.5% controlling shareholder completed a roughly CNY 500m share purchase, giving the company time and ownership stability during the reset.
Bear reasons.
- Higher-priced liver-product sales volume fell 21% in 2025, direct evidence that weakness resides in the economically important core rather than only in low-margin distribution.
- Secondary/reseller prices around CNY 460–600 remain below the official CNY 760 suggested retail price, showing that the old scarcity premium has reversed.
- Q1 2026 revenue and profit were still down 12.74% and 25.64%, so the CNY 1.29bn operating-cash rebound cannot yet be treated as an earnings recovery.
- At roughly 42x trailing earnings and about 41x normalized owner earnings, the stock still requires a material recovery despite a margin-of-safety verdict of none.
Pre-mortem: where this thesis can fail.
The first script is a demand-led permanent de-rating. By 2028, premium health-preservation spending continues migrating toward cheaper branded TCM, other consumer-health products and ordinary medical treatment. Pientzehuang holds official retail at CNY 760, but secondary and discounted-channel prices settle around CNY 500–550. High-priced core units fall another 10–15% annually through 2027. Lower gallstone costs prevent a cash crisis but cannot offset the mix deterioration; liver gross margin falls toward 52–55%, normalized attributable profit settles near CNY 1.5bn and the market applies a 20x multiple. Earnings per share around CNY 2.5 at 20x gives a stock price near CNY 50, roughly 62% below the current price.
The second script is a false raw-material recovery. Old expensive inventory lasts longer than expected, while natural-gallstone cost rebounds above CNY 1.0m/kg and natural-musk supply remains constrained. Core volume stabilizes but liver gross margin stays below 58% through 2028. Cosmetics continues shrinking and does not absorb its new fixed assets. Normalized profit reaches only CNY 1.7bn. At 25x earnings, equity value would be around CNY 70 per share, close to a 47% loss from the current price. The opponent in this scenario is the supply curve rather than a direct competitor.
Final research conclusion.
Pientzehuang remains one of the more unusual protected franchises in Chinese healthcare. The legal moat, regulated access to scarce inputs, brand and balance sheet remain real. The evidence now rejects the strongest version of the old investment story. A CNY 760 official price does not prove pricing power when high-priced units fall 21% and market intermediaries value the physical product below official retail. The business can recover earnings through lower raw-material cost without returning to the old scarcity regime.
At CNY 132.59, investors are paying roughly 42x trailing profit for that recovery. The price is consistent with a base case in which flagship demand stabilizes and liver margin returns to the mid-to-upper 60s. It offers no margin of safety against the conservative case. An existing holder can rationally wait through the inventory cycle because leverage is low, but new capital receives a materially better risk/reward below CNY 90, where the valuation allows for continued demand weakness as well as cost recovery.
My judgment would turn more positive before the share price reaches that level if the operating evidence changes first: high-priced core volume turns non-negative, inventory falls below CNY 6bn, liver gross margin exceeds 65% and channel transaction prices converge meaningfully toward official retail without a new speculative bubble. A second year of double-digit high-price-unit declines would push the judgment in the opposite direction.

【Investment rating】
- Rating: Hold
- One-line thesis: A protected high-margin franchise is clearing an inventory and raw-material cycle, but 42x trailing earnings already price in meaningful recovery.
- Three price signals:
- 【Ideal Buy Price】80–90 CNY Basis: at least 20% below the CNY 100–115 conservative owner-earnings value; this is the only buy-range basis used in the report.
- Acceptable hold price: 125–165 CNY, approximately within ±15% of the CNY 145 midpoint of base-case value.
- Clearly overvalued price: 235–255 CNY, beginning more than 10% above the upper end of the CNY 180–210 optimistic value.
- Current-price classification: acceptable hold.
- Whether to wait for a better price: yes. For new money, CNY 80–90 offers a defensible margin of safety; an earlier entry would require high-price product volume to stabilize, inventory to fall below CNY 6.0bn and liver gross margin to exceed 65%. The opportunity cost is missing a rapid cost-driven re-rating if gallstone relief reaches earnings before the share price falls.
- Target holding horizon: 3–5 years.
- Expected annualized return: conservative about -5% to -6%; base about +8% to +9%; optimistic about +18% to +19%, assuming the respective three-year earnings/valuation outcomes and dividends described above.
- Max-loss risk: roughly 60% in the demand-led pre-mortem, with a CNY 50–55 outcome if high-price core volume keeps falling, liver margin approaches the low-50s and the market de-rates the stock to about 20x earnings.
- Reassessment-trigger signals: high-priced liver-product volume ≤-10% for another full year; liver gross margin <60% for two consecutive reported periods; total inventory rises back above CNY 6.7bn after the Q1 decline; natural gallstone returns above CNY 1.0m/kg for a sustained period; or high-price product volume becomes non-negative while liver gross margin exceeds 65%, which would trigger an upward reassessment.

The data summarize the central tension: franchise margins are still strong, but flagship demand and cash conversion weakened while the equity continues to command a premium multiple.
Research uncertainties.
First, dealer-level inventory is a major blind spot. The company disclosed factory raw materials and finished goods in considerable detail after the SSE inquiry, but not a complete channel-inventory series. Manufacturer inventory normalization cannot be equated with end-market destocking.
Second, exact natural-gallstone and natural-musk cost layers are commercially confidential. Public data establish total liver-related raw-material value but not kilograms purchased by date and price. The estimated 2026–2027 margin-release timing is consequently an inference rather than a model built from disclosed physical inventory.
Third, historical price-increase databases mix ex-factory prices, suggested retail prices and market prices. I have used only selected milestones where the series can be identified. Claims of “more than twenty increases” are well supported by multiple press compilations, but a fully reconciled event-by-event primary filing series was not available in the research set.
Fourth, public end-use data do not reliably separate medicinal use, gifting, health-preservation use and investment-like stocking. Press estimates exist but are excluded from the valuation assumptions.
Fifth, no H1 2026 report was available by the 2026-08-15 base date. The next report was scheduled for August 29, so the current judgment can change materially when a second quarter of 2026 operating and inventory data becomes available.
