Research Summary

Tesla still makes most of its money today by selling vehicles, selling energy storage, and providing after-sales services. It is not yet an AI company that has successfully completed its transformation. In 2025, the company generated USD 94.827 billion in total revenue, including USD 69.526 billion from automotive revenue, still close to three quarters of the total; USD 12.530 billion from services and other; and USD 12.771 billion from energy. The issue is that the profit pool has already started to move: in 2025, automotive revenue fell 10% year over year, while energy revenue grew 27%, and energy gross margin rose to 29.8%, clearly above automotive at 17.8%. In the same year, automotive regulatory credit revenue was USD 1.993 billion, while the energy business also benefited from USD 1.12 billion of manufacturing tax credits. Combined, these policy and quasi-policy benefits covered most of that year's net income. This means Tesla's current financial statements are being supported by a mix of vehicles, energy storage, policy benefits, and software add-on sales, rather than autonomous driving that has already been monetized.

What the market is trading has also moved far beyond the question of how many more Model Ys can be sold. In June 2026, J.P. Morgan upgraded Tesla from underweight to neutral, arguing that the market increasingly treats it as a combined bet on autonomous driving, robotics, AI chips, and software services, rather than a near-term earnings improvement story. Around the same time, Tesla expanded its driverless Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, to the entire metro area, but the operating fleet reported by Reuters was only about 50 vehicles, well behind Waymo's more than 250 vehicles locally and roughly 400,000 weekly paid rides across the United States. In other words, capital markets are giving Tesla a long-dated option that says, if autonomous driving scales the way management claims, today's price may still not be absurd. They are not valuing it like a traditional automaker.

The stock's rhythm over the past few years can also be read through this line. From 2020 to 2021, Tesla benefited from rising EV penetration, the 5-for-1 stock split, inclusion in the S&P 500, and the market's willingness to pay a very large valuation in advance for an "endgame winner." The stock entered its most aggressive phase of valuation expansion. In 2022, as growth slowed, Musk was distracted by Twitter, and concerns about demand and governance rose, the share price suffered one of the worst years in the company's history. In 2023, Tesla cut prices globally to defend volume, and that directly pulled down automotive gross margin. After 2024, the narrative turned again: layoffs, cost reductions, and a renewed concentration of capex and attention on Robotaxi, AI infrastructure, Cybercab, and Optimus. The stock began to follow "future optionality" more than quarterly vehicle deliveries.

The most important bull-bear debate now is whether it is worth USD 1.4 trillion, not whether Tesla is a good company. Bulls focus on three points. First, Q1 2026 revenue was USD 22.387 billion, up 16% year over year; GAAP automotive gross margin recovered to 21.1%; and FSD subscriptions rose to 1.28 million, suggesting the core vehicle business has not collapsed. Second, Austin Robotaxi has moved from story to commercial pilot operations, and autonomous driving has finally moved from slides to road assets. Third, the energy storage business has grown from a fringe business into a real second curve over the past two years. Bears focus on the other side. First, Q1 deliveries were 358,023 vehicles, below market expectations, and days of inventory returned to 27 days. Second, management has lifted the 2026 capex plan to more than USD 25 billion and warned that 2026 free cash flow will turn negative. Third, Waymo still leads in real robotaxi operations, regulatory coordination, and fleet scale, while Tesla's autonomous-driving commercialization has not yet produced a proven economic model.

Looking at fundamentals, competition, and valuation together, Tesla is in a rare position. On the balance sheet, it has USD 44.743 billion in cash and short-term investments, with only USD 9.039 billion of debt, most of it non-recourse, so it is not a distressed stock. Operationally, automotive revenue and margins have fluctuated sharply over the past two years, capex continues to rise, and free cash flow is not effortless, so it is also not a high-quality compounder. It is a company in transition, and the capital market is prepaying for it as if the transition has already succeeded. My qualitative label would be "company in transition," rather than "high-quality compounding growth" or "valuation bubble." The reason is simple: the transition is really happening. Austin Robotaxi, FSD subscriptions, Megapack expansion, and AI infrastructure investment are all real moves. But the current price has also already pulled a large amount of success from 3-5 years in the future into today.

Company Longitudinal Development History

Origins and Listing Path

To understand why Tesla appeared, we have to go back to 2003, when almost nobody seriously believed in pure electric vehicles. The 2010 prospectus was clear: the company was founded in 2003, originally to prove that EVs could be faster, sexier, and more elegant in engineering terms than gasoline cars, with "environmental protection" almost secondary. There is a famous divergence in the historical narrative. In legal and entrepreneurial history, Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning are widely treated as the original co-founders; Tesla's more recent corporate filings describe Elon Musk as "one of our founders." I trust the early legal documents and financing materials more, because they were closer to the founding context and left less room for later interest-driven rewriting. Musk joined the board in 2004 after leading the Series A round and became CEO in 2008. That is what truly shaped almost every critical path Tesla later took: more aggressive vertical integration, stronger product narrative, greater tolerance for capital consumption, and a greater willingness to use the "next-generation platform" to override short-term profits.

The listing path itself also says a lot about the company's early funding constraints. At the 2010 IPO, Tesla issued 11.8806 million shares at USD 17 per share, while Toyota bought 2.9412 million shares in a concurrent private placement at the same price, for about USD 50 million. Total shares outstanding after the IPO were about 93.1094 million. The most important pages in the prospectus repeatedly discussed Model S, the Fremont factory, the DOE loan, and future capex, rather than how successful Roadster already was. In other words, the core story the company sold to capital markets at listing was: if you give me more capital, I can turn high-performance niche EVs into an industrializable premium mass platform. It was not a current-profit story. That story has not fundamentally changed over the following 16 years. The stage has simply moved from Roadster to Model S, then to Model 3/Y, FSD, Robotaxi, and Optimus.

Stage Breakdown

The first stage was product validation. When Roadster entered production in 2008, Tesla was still an extremely fragile hardware start-up. The prospectus shows that before the 2010 listing, the company remained heavily dependent on Roadster sales, and any delay in Model S design, manufacturing, or financing could directly threaten survival. The most important job in this stage was proving two things, not scaling: first, high-performance pure EVs powered by lithium batteries were not laboratory toys; second, Tesla could sell electric drive systems to traditional automakers such as Daimler. It did not start by chasing mass-market volume for practical reasons: capital, supply chains, and mass-production experience did not allow it. Selling expensive vehicles first, then spreading battery and system costs over time, was a path forced by constraints.

The second stage was industrial formation, from Model S to Model X, roughly 2012 to 2016. In this stage, Tesla upgraded from "proving the product can be built" to "proving the factory can run." It bought the Fremont factory, built direct-sales stores, and created a service system, beginning to absorb the heavy-asset problems that real auto companies face. The 2010 prospectus had already stated that planned 2010 capex was USD 100 million to USD 125 million, of which about USD 42 million would be used to buy the Fremont facility. Looking back today, this was more than a land-and-equipment investment. It determined that Tesla would not live by the asset-light outsourcing logic of traditional automakers. It would rather bear fixed costs and keep manufacturing and product iteration in its own hands. This later became the source of its efficiency and also the root of persistently high capex.

The third stage was "production hell" and the decisive turn in the model, roughly 2017 to 2020. Model 3 pushed Tesla from "able to make premium EVs" into the life-or-death battle of whether it could make large-scale consumer industrial products. This research does not retell the full chronology, but capital-market history has already delivered the result: Tesla ultimately won. It did so because, in process iteration, organizational force, supply-chain coordination, and software-driven experience, it looked more like a company capable of compressing a complex category into a single engineering cadence than most traditional automakers. The 2020 5-for-1 stock split and S&P 500 inclusion were more like the capital market's seal on that industrialization victory. Tesla was no longer treated as a start-up that could run out of funding at any time; it was repriced as a leader that might dominate a new platform cycle.

The fourth stage was the coexistence of a cash machine and valuation polarization, corresponding to 2021 to 2022. In 2021, Tesla generated USD 11.5 billion of operating cash flow and USD 5.52 billion of net income. In 2022, operating cash flow was USD 14.72 billion, net income was USD 12.56 billion, and capex rose to USD 7.16 billion. The benefit of this stage was that the company finally proved it could grow, make money, and generate cash. The drawback was that capital markets pushed the expectation that it would ultimately become the foundational platform for global mobility and energy too far. By the end of 2022, as Chinese demand slowed, Musk was distracted by Twitter, and the market's patience with growth fell, Tesla's valuation was hit hard. This period had a large long-term effect: since then, Tesla has never returned to an era when delivery growth automatically meant valuation expansion.

The fifth stage is the current and most difficult transformation period, extending from 2023 to today. In 2023, Tesla defended share through price wars, but automotive gross margin fell from 28.5% in 2022 to 19.4% in 2023; in 2025, it fell further to 17.8%. After 2024, the company clearly reduced its emphasis on "I am the high-margin EV leader" and instead strengthened future businesses such as Robotaxi, FSD subscriptions, AI compute, Optimus, and Cybercab. In Q1 2026, FSD subscriptions reached 1.28 million, Robotaxi began expanding in Austin, and driverless operations moved from concept toward early operations. The key turning point in this stage is that capital markets have accepted that Tesla's valuation can no longer be explained by automobiles alone. Autonomous driving and robotics options must be added. Because of this, the relationship between fundamentals and the share price has loosened: a delivery miss can hurt the stock, but Robotaxi expansion can lift it, and the latter often rewrites the narrative more powerfully.

Key Milestones and Longitudinal Financial Review

If the past decade-plus is compressed into a few milestones that truly changed Tesla's fate, the first is Fremont. It turned Tesla from an electric-drive and vehicle-solution provider into a company willing to carry an industrial system itself. The second is Model 3, which turned the feasibility question into an efficiency question. The third is the 2020 capital-market revaluation, which gave Tesla extremely cheap equity currency and unusually high strategic tolerance. The fourth is the 2023 price war. It defended scale and brand visibility, but it also made the market systematically question for the first time how much of Tesla's profitability came from engineering advantage and how much came from early-mover industry dividends. The fifth is the 2024-2026 Robotaxi pivot, which raised Tesla's imagination space again and pushed execution risk back to the front.

Financially, Tesla's 2021-2025 period is a curve of "high-level revenue plateau and rewritten profit structure," not linear growth. Operating cash flow increased from USD 11.5 billion in 2021 to USD 14.75 billion in 2025, with a five-year total of about USD 69.15 billion. Capex rose from USD 6.48 billion to USD 8.53 billion over the same period, peaking at USD 11.34 billion in 2024. Five-year free cash flow totaled about USD 26.7 billion. Tesla remains a cash generator, but it is no longer a company where applying more capital easily releases higher free cash flow. The operating cash flow to net income ratio over the past five years was about 1.57x, which looks solid. But after disaggregation, 2023 profit was heavily affected by a one-time tax item, and 2025 was affected by regulatory credits, working capital, and lower capex. This is not a bad thing, but it reminds you that Tesla's profit quality is not as smooth as the stock narrative.

The share-price and valuation history also fits this financial line. Macrotrends' long-term series shows that as of 2026-06-09, Tesla's split-adjusted annualized return since listing was still about 41%, with current market cap in the range of roughly USD 1.309 trillion to USD 1.403 trillion. But current trailing PE has two common readings, 317x and 364x, mainly because different data providers handle TTM EPS and update timing differently. At the current-price level, this report mainly uses the 363.9x figure from the finance tool, because it better matches the reality of thin profits after Q1 2026. Macrotrends is more suitable for viewing Tesla's historical valuation range, not for determining the precise PE at a single point in time. Whichever metric is used, one thing is unchanged: Tesla is still valued at a level that traditional automakers cannot reach and that its current cash return cannot independently support.

Business Model, Industry, and Horizontal Comparables

Revenue Structure and Operating Leverage

Tesla's business machine now has three parts. The first is automotive, which still contributes the overwhelming majority of revenue and determines factory utilization, brand mindshare, and the installed base for software. The second is energy, centered on Megapack and Powerwall, which has moved from a nice story to a real profit center. The third is services and other, including paid Supercharging, insurance, repairs, used vehicles, parts, and increasingly important FSD sales and subscriptions. In 2025, automotive revenue was USD 69.526 billion, services and other revenue was USD 12.530 billion, and energy revenue was USD 12.771 billion. Gross profit matters even more: automotive gross profit was USD 12.361 billion, energy gross profit was USD 3.802 billion, and while services and other still have limited gross profit, they raise lifetime owner value. Tesla's real profit source today is still "automotive base + energy increment + policy/software add-ons," not any single future business.

The cost structure means Tesla's flexibility and fragility coexist. Its fixed costs include factories, tooling, R&D, AI training infrastructure, direct sales, and service systems. Variable costs include batteries, raw materials, logistics, warranty, tariffs, and delivery-related expenses. This means operating leverage looks very attractive when volume rises. But once demand weakens and prices move down, margins fall quickly, because factory, R&D, and software-platform costs do not shrink in sync. The gross-margin compression from 2023 to 2025 is exactly the result of this structure being hit by price wars and utilization pressure. At the same time, from 2026 onward the company will materially raise capex for AI, robotics, Cybercab, and factories, lifting fixed costs another layer. For a growth stock, this is normal. For a balanced investor, it means profit volatility will not be smaller than before. It will be larger.

Moat and Governance

I think Tesla has only four real moats. The first is manufacturing and supply-chain integration. Factories in Shanghai, Berlin, Texas, California, and Nevada, together with energy-storage factories and the charging network, let it put product iteration, cost optimization, and regional coordination into one system better than most peers. The second is the data and distribution advantage from the charging network and vehicle installed base. The third is brand. It is not a traditional luxury brand, but it still has global recognition around the labels of electric, software, performance, and trend. The fourth is the ability to sell software add-ons. FSD subscriptions reached 1.28 million in Q1 2026, showing that users are willing to keep paying for post-sale vehicle software.

But real moats must be separated from favorable-cycle promotion. Tesla is often described as having the most autonomous-driving data, therefore it will ultimately win. That proposition has not yet been proven in reality. Waymo has already achieved multi-city, driverless operations, 400,000 weekly paid rides, and a large fleet, while Tesla's Austin Robotaxi has only just entered metro-area expansion and remains far smaller than Waymo. Its advanced autonomous-driving approvals in China and Europe are still constrained by regulation. Put differently, Tesla has engineering and installed-base advantages in autonomous driving, but it has not yet formed a commercially verified moat. The market is pricing a "potential moat" as an "already realized moat." That is the core tension in the current valuation.

On governance, Tesla's strength is the strong execution and long-term vision common to founder-led companies. The weakness is the same thing: the company's dependence on Elon Musk has not clearly declined. 2026 filings still put him at the center of almost every major narrative. The company also explicitly stated that, within unrecognized stock-based compensation expense for the 2025 CEO Performance Award, USD 10.23 billion corresponded to milestones already considered probable of achievement, while another USD 105.82 billion to USD 120.37 billion corresponded to milestones not yet considered probable of achievement. For ordinary shareholders, there are two more practical issues than whether the incentive is large. First, stock incentives and governance disputes will continue to pass through the income statement and valuation for many years. Second, the market will always apply a discount to whether the board has enough independence to constrain founder-style capital allocation. The ongoing EEOC racial-harassment lawsuit also reminds investors that this company carries governance costs as well.

Industry Structure and Cycle

Placing Tesla back into the industry shows that it is exposed to three cycles at once. The first is the EV penetration cycle. The IEA 2026 outlook shows that global EV growth is continuing, but the United States has weakened notably after subsidies were phased out, with more of the growth center shifting to China, Europe, and emerging markets. Cox's Q4 2025 report also shows that U.S. EV sales fell sharply on a quarterly basis after tax credits were removed. The second is the price-war and inventory cycle, especially in China. Reuters cited CPCA data showing that China's auto market sales fell nearly 20% in the first five months of 2026, while new-energy vehicles exceeded 62% of the market, but competition is extremely intense. The third is the autonomous-driving regulation and technology-iteration cycle. This does not follow the rhythm traditional auto companies are used to, so it amplifies valuation divergence.

The most favorable industry variables for Tesla are continued growth in electrification penetration, sustained high growth in energy-storage demand, and gradual regulatory relaxation for autonomous driving. The least favorable variables are the fading of U.S. subsidies, continued price wars in China, simultaneous strengthening by local European brands and Chinese brands, and continued approval delays for advanced autonomous driving in China and Europe. Tesla crossed the last cycle through first-mover advantage and scale expansion. To cross the next one, it will rely on product-refresh speed, energy-storage profit contribution, and autonomous-driving execution speed. The biggest difference from 2020 is that this cycle no longer has the simple dividend of an industry just taking off.

Competitor Profiles and Ecological Position

Tesla operates in a heavily contested track, but it is not simply a competitor to one specific car model. The five ways of living in this industry are what deserve real attention.

BYD has become another kind of efficiency machine. Its strength lies in pushing price, supply chain, model density, and overseas distribution to an extreme that is both more traditional-manufacturing-like and more Chinese, rather than being a cooler brand. Customers choose BYD often because it is cheap enough, well-equipped enough, fast enough to deliver, and increasingly fast in upgrading intelligent-driving and affordable technologies. In 2025, BYD faced profit pressure, with net profit down 19% year over year, and overall deliveries were again under pressure in the first five months of 2026. But its scale in China and overseas, and its penetration speed in Europe, still make it Tesla's most realistic mass-production competitor. Tesla competes for the global premium and mid-to-high-end pure-EV profit pool. BYD competes for a broader mainstream-market profit pool. The former relies on per-vehicle software and brand add-on value; the latter relies on full-chain manufacturing density.

GM and Ford represent another path for traditional automakers: using the gasoline-vehicle cash cow to fund EV and software transformation. GM generated USD 43.6 billion of revenue and USD 2.6 billion of net income in Q1 2026, yet the market values it at only about USD 53.4 billion. Ford's market cap is about USD 43.0 billion. Their problem is that the EV business still has difficulty proving it can achieve scale, gross margin, and software add-on value at the same time the way Tesla can, not that they lack money to make cars. Why do consumers still buy them? Because their brand lineups are mature, financial services are complete, channels are broad, and pickup and commercial-use scenarios are solid. Why do investors not give them high valuations? Because their electrified future needs old businesses to subsidize it, and their autonomous-driving narratives are far less imaginative than Tesla's.

Rivian represents the start-up automaker category most like a contemporary version of early Tesla. Its product reputation is usually better than its financial statements. Consumers buy design, off-road temperament, and brand culture, not ultimate value for money. In Q1 2026, Rivian revenue grew 11% year over year, quarterly gross profit turned positive to USD 119 million, and deliveries were 10,365 vehicles, above expectations. But its market cap was only USD 22.2 billion. Rivian's strengths are a distinct brand, decent software DNA, and new leverage from partnerships with Volkswagen and Uber. Its weaknesses are small scale and a still-fragile unit-economics model. Its threat to Tesla is this: if R2 can truly scale, Rivian will become a competitor closer to Tesla than legacy automakers in the U.S. mid-to-high-end electric SUV market, even if not in near-term volume.

Li Auto and XPeng show the other side of the Chinese market. Li Auto, with range extenders and family-vehicle scenarios, absorbed large demand during the phase when premium EVs still faced range anxiety. It generated USD 3.3 billion of revenue in Q1 2026, but gross profit and earnings fell sharply, and it turned to a clear net loss, showing that the comfortable-growth phase in China has also passed. XPeng is more like Tesla's technology-route competitor in "intelligent-driving downmarket" and value-for-money smart EVs. Its Q4 2025 revenue grew 38.2% year over year, and it turned profitable for the quarter. These two companies illustrate a very practical fact: in China, "automakers that look like technology companies" are now a group. Tesla is only one of them.

The real pressure on Tesla's autonomous-driving valuation comes from operating rivals such as Waymo, not from any single automaker. Waymo's advantage is that it has already secured four tickets: fleet operations, city regulation, safety validation, and commercial paid rides. Tesla is betting on "cameras + in-house stack + mass-production vehicles installed first, then gradually unlocked." Waymo is betting on "slower but steadier urban autonomous-driving commercialization." If the industry ultimately proves that the deciding factor in robotaxi is who can first turn safety and dispatch into a stable service network, and training-data volume matters less, then Tesla's current autonomous-driving valuation premium will be re-examined.

From an ecological-position perspective, Tesla is still the company in the global EV and energy-storage chain that most resembles a "platform manufacturer." It is both a leader and a company being challenged. It fills the gap of putting EVs, energy storage, software, the charging network, and the future robotics narrative into one balance sheet. It competes for the brand premium of traditional automakers, the imagination premium of software companies, and the growth premium of energy-storage companies. The problem is that once the industry enters a price war or a period of autonomous-driving commercial validation, three types of players will simultaneously compete for its profits: BYD for manufacturing efficiency, Waymo for autonomous-driving credibility, and Rivian/Chinese new forces for product freshness.

Current Fundamentals and Bull-Bear Debate

The Most Recent Four Quarters

Tesla's Q1 2026 financial report looked better on the surface than the market had expected. Revenue was USD 22.387 billion, up 16% year over year; GAAP gross margin was 21.1%, up 478 basis points year over year; operating income was USD 941 million, with an operating margin of 4.2%; net income was USD 477 million; operating cash flow was USD 3.937 billion; and capex was USD 2.493 billion. More strikingly, FSD subscriptions rose to 1.28 million, up 51% year over year. These numbers explain why the market initially reacted positively after the report: they proved that Tesla, at least for now, has not lost the bottom line of its financial statements because of demand volatility.

But connecting the four quarters makes the picture less comfortable. From Q2 2025 to Q1 2026, Tesla's revenue was USD 22.496 billion, USD 28.095 billion, USD 24.901 billion, and USD 22.387 billion, respectively, with large volatility.
