The main risks are lower allowed regulatory returns, rigid capital spending and financing needs, missed large-customer load growth, and valuation normalization. A more attractive buying range would be 52 to 58 dollars; at the current price, the stock is better placed on a watchlist while waiting for a thicker margin of safety.

Conclusion First

Investment rating: Watch. If Alliant Energy is viewed as a business to acquire and hold for the long term, it is a traditional utility that is easy to understand, supported by stable demand, and protected by strong regulatory barriers. But it is not the kind of asset-light compounder that gushes free cash. Through IPL and WPL, the company provides regulated electric and natural gas service in Iowa and Wisconsin. In 2025, it served about 1.01 million electric customers and 433,000 natural gas customers, generated about $4.4 billion in revenue and about $810 million in net income. As of May 30, 2026, LNT traded at about $71.61, with a market value of about $18.53 billion and a TTM P/E of about 22.5 times.

Core judgment. First, this is a business I can understand: at its core, it is a regional utility franchise plus regulated pricing, with recurring revenue, rigid demand, and extremely high customer retention. Second, it is a "decent but unexciting" business: the moat mainly comes from licenses, service territories, and network assets, not from brand, network effects, or exceptional capital returns. Third, the issue is not whether the company exists, but whether the current price is cheap enough: LNT's current valuation is not far below the S&P 500's forward valuation, while it carries higher capital-expenditure rigidity, heavier debt, and weaker cash flexibility. Fourth, it looks more like a "defensive, income-oriented, regulation-driven" asset than a classic high-return compounding machine.

Is there a margin of safety at the current price: not obvious. I would define it as a "good company, but not a good price today." The current valuation does not leave long-term conservative investors enough room for error. If load growth, data center connections, regulatory approvals, and capital-market financing conditions all go smoothly over the next few years, today's price is unlikely to prove disastrously high. But anchored to conservative owner earnings and peer valuations, the current price is closer to an optimistic case than a conservative case.

Suitable investor type. It is better suited to long-term investors who want low-volatility, regulated, dividend-growing assets in a portfolio. It is less suitable for investors seeking deep value discounts, asset-light high returns, or high-free-cash-flow compounding. The company's current annualized dividend target is $2.14 per share, implying a dividend yield of about 2.99%, and it has raised its dividend for 22 consecutive years.

Largest uncertainties. There are three key uncertainties. First, whether data centers and large-load growth can truly become high-quality, recoverable, and profitable incremental rate base, rather than front-loaded capital spending followed by delayed regulatory recovery. Second, in an environment where interest rates remain relatively high, whether the company can continue funding large investment plans without materially diluting shareholders. Third, the current valuation already reflects a fair amount of "stable growth"; if allowed returns, load realization, or financing costs move unfavorably, the risk of valuation compression would be fairly direct.

Score overview. Business understandability: 4.5/5. Industry attractiveness: 3/5. Moat strength: 4/5. Management and capital allocation: 3.5/5. This is a name that can be understood and held, but price discipline is essential.

Business Essence and Industry Position

Alliant Energy's core business is very direct: through its wholly owned subsidiaries Interstate Power and Light and Wisconsin Power and Light, it provides regulated electric and natural gas utility service in the Midwest. Its non-utility platform is small and is also "not expected to be a significant user of capital" in the future. The company states clearly that future capital investment will mainly target the utility business. In other words, this company does not primarily make money by "telling a story"; it makes money by continuously building, operating, and renewing assets within defined service areas, then recovering costs and earning a reasonable return through regulator-approved rates.

The customer base is also clear. Customers are mainly residential, commercial, and industrial users in Iowa and Wisconsin, plus a small number of wholesale customers. At the end of 2025, the company had about 1,012,286 electric customers and 433,344 natural gas customers. The billing model is not complicated either: utility rates are approved by regulators, and core revenue comes from electricity sales, gas sales, transmission and distribution, and related recoverable costs. In 2025, total revenue was $4.362 billion, including $3.697 billion from electric utility revenue, $525 million from natural gas utility revenue, and only $89 million from non-utility revenue.

This type of revenue has strong recurrence, stability, and predictability. Stability does not mean "no volatility"; it means the sources of volatility are relatively explainable: weather, the timing of fuel-cost recovery, regulatory timing, tax-credit pass-through, wholesale contract expirations, and similar factors. In 2024, company revenue fell to $3.981 billion from 2023, mainly because of natural gas prices, fuel-related items, regulatory and tax factors rather than a failure of the business model. In 2025, revenue rebounded to $4.362 billion, and net income increased from $690 million to $810 million.

The cost structure is easy to understand, but not "elegant." Electric fuel and purchased power, transmission service, gas sold, operations and maintenance, depreciation and amortization, taxes, and interest are the company's main cost items. In 2025, depreciation and amortization reached $846 million and interest expense reached $512 million, showing that this is a heavy-asset, heavy-financing industry. What investors get is not a high-gross-margin internet model, but the model of "put assets in, receive regulatory permission to recover them, and earn the return slowly."

What does this business depend on? The key dependency is not a star CEO or a single large customer, but the regulatory framework. In the 2025 annual report, the auditor listed "regulatory accounting and its effects on the financial statements" as a critical audit matter, because a large part of the company's income statement and balance sheet rests on the assumption that costs can be recovered through rates in the future. If the regulatory environment deteriorates, asset carrying values, earnings recognition, and the pace of cash recovery could all be affected.

From an industry-position perspective, the U.S. regulated utility sector is generally a mature industry, but it has entered a "re-acceleration phase within a mature industry." In 2026, the EIA expected U.S. electricity demand to see its strongest four-year growth since 2000, and the IEA also expected U.S. electricity demand to grow at nearly 2% annually from 2026 to 2030, with data centers contributing about half of the incremental demand. For Alliant, this means the industry is not high growth, but localized load growth is creating new rate-base expansion opportunities for regional utilities.

The company has indeed begun to take on this demand. In 2024, management disclosed agreements with data center development projects. In Q1 2026 filings, it further disclosed that IPL signed an electric service agreement with one customer in April 2026, with contracted peak demand of about 370MW. At the same time, the company also acknowledged in its risk factors that large-load projects could be delayed or canceled, or could create risks of overbuilding and insufficient asset utilization. In other words, data centers are both a growth opportunity and the part of the valuation story most easily overestimated.

If the stock market closed for five years, would I be willing to own this business? At a reasonable purchase price, yes. It provides essential services, demand will not vanish out of thin air, and the operating logic is clear. But if buying at today's price, I would not feel especially comfortable, because the business will probably still be operating five years from now, while the uncertainty is whether the price I pay today is too high. This is also the difference between a long-term business owner and a short-term trader: the question is not "will it go up," but "will this purchase price look worthwhile ten years from now."

Moat and Governance Quality

If Alliant Energy's moat is broken down, its strongest element is not brand, but regulatory licenses, statutory service territories, transmission and distribution network assets, and customer switching costs. The company provides retail utility service in Iowa and Wisconsin, with rate-setting based on a regulatory framework under which prudent costs are recoverable and invested capital can earn a reasonable return. This is a typical institutional moat. Its benefit is limited competition and stable demand; its drawback is that the upside is also constrained by the system.

Assessing moat types one by one, my conclusions are as follows. Brand advantage: weak. Users do not consume electricity and gas because they "love" the brand. Cost advantage: moderate. The company does not crush rivals through the lowest unit costs, but lowers long-term service costs through scaled operations, capital-market access, and regulatory recovery mechanisms. Scale advantage: moderate. Within each service territory, the existing network and asset base create advantages for marginal expansion. Network effects: almost none. Switching costs: very high. For most households and businesses, switching electric grids and gas networks is not realistic. Channel advantage: strong. The channel is the service territory itself. Patent and data advantage: weak. License and regulatory barriers: very strong. Corporate culture and operating capability: moderate. Capital allocation capability: moderate. Overall, the moat is more like a "utility moat," not a Coca-Cola-style brand moat or a Microsoft-style ecosystem moat.

I currently judge the moat to be generally stable, with slight widening in some areas. The widening comes from regulatory approval of Iowa individual customer rate mechanisms and new Wisconsin rate increases, which help the company serve large-load customers in a more targeted way. The recovery in industry demand also gives assets that were originally part of a "low-growth utility" more incremental opportunities. But I do not think the moat is rapidly widening, because the company itself explicitly lists "customer-owned generation, third-party energy supply, behind-the-meter models, and direct procurement solutions by large customers" as risks.

Can the company raise prices in an inflationary environment? The answer is: yes, but not freely; it raises prices through regulation. The 2024 Iowa regulatory settlement included an annualized $185 million retail electric base-rate increase and a $10 million retail gas base-rate increase, while setting earnings-sharing mechanisms and return thresholds for certain assets. Wisconsin also granted WPL new electric and gas rate increases for 2025 and 2026. This mechanism shows that the company does have some ability to "fight inflation," but it comes from continuous negotiation with regulators rather than discretionary pricing power in the end market.

Can the company remain profitable in an economic downturn? Historically, the answer leans yes. In 2020, the pandemic year, the company still generated $614 million in net income attributable to common shareholders. From 2021 to 2025, net income attributable to common shareholders was $659 million, $686 million, $703 million, $690 million, and $810 million, respectively, with no operating loss. This does not mean there is no risk. It means utility demand and the regulatory model usually make the company more resilient during recessions than ordinary discretionary consumer or industrial businesses.

On management and governance quality, I would rate it above average but not exceptional. Positive evidence includes several points: the company established an independent chair in 2025; independent directors hold executive sessions without management present at every regular board meeting; in 2025 and Q1 2026, management proactively engaged with shareholders representing about 55% of outstanding shares; executives have explicit ownership requirements, with the CEO at 6 times base salary and other executives at 1.5 to 4 times base salary; the company also has clawback provisions and prohibits hedging and pledging shares.

But the negative side also matters. Management and directors as a group own less than 1% of the company, meaning their economic interests are not highly tied to ordinary shareholders. This is not unusual among large U.S. utilities, but it is not "strong alignment" either. In addition, the company has had few real buybacks over the years, while the share count has instead risen moderately: in 2023, ATM issuance and the Shareowner Direct Plan brought in $246 million of equity financing; in 2024 and 2025, issuance was also about $23 million each year. As of March 2026, shares outstanding were about 258.28 million, up about 0.48% year over year. This looks more like "cautious financing-oriented utility capital allocation" than capital allocation centered on growth in per-share intrinsic value.

In capital allocation, the company's main uses of cash are reinvestment, dividends, and debt, not buybacks or large acquisitions. In 2025, operating cash flow was $1.169 billion, but construction and acquisition expenditures reached $2.483 billion, and common dividend payments were $521 million in the same year. To maintain this model, the company must rely on debt and moderate equity financing. In Q1 2026, the company added a $400 million floating-rate term loan due 2027 and redeemed the principal of matured convertible notes in March 2026, while also issuing an additional 834,811 shares because of conversion obligations. This capital allocation is not reckless, but it shows clearly that the company is not a model of "internally self-funded cash generation."

My assessment of management candor is somewhat positive. In 2024, the company clearly disclosed that because the IUC did not allow a return on IPL Lansing's remaining book value, it recorded a $60 million pre-tax non-cash impairment. This kind of information does not make management look good, but the company disclosed it fairly directly. Together with an unqualified audit opinion, effective internal controls, and management's Q1 2026 disclosure that controls and procedures remained effective, I do not see obvious accounting-manipulation red flags.

Financial Quality and Owner Earnings

The table below summarizes core financial data from 2021 to 2025. The basis is Alliant Energy's consolidated statements, and all figures are in millions of U.S. dollars except per-share items. Data for 2025/2024/2023 come from the 2025 and 2024 annual reports, while 2022/2021 data come from the 2022 annual report.

From a growth perspective, the company is not high growth, but it is not stagnant either. From 2021 to 2025, revenue increased from $3.669 billion to $4.362 billion, net income attributable to common shareholders increased from $659 million to $810 million, and EPS increased from $2.63 to $3.14. Management's IR page gives a long-term EPS growth target of 5% to 7%, and EPS has compounded at about 6% over the past 10 years; this is broadly consistent with historical results.

Margins are generally stable. Operating margin was roughly in the 21.7% to 23.5% range from 2021 to 2025; net margin attributable to common shareholders was roughly in the 16% to 19% range. This indicates that the company's profits are not built on a one-year cyclical boom, but on a continuing mechanism of regulatory recovery, investment returns, and cost pass-through. What truly weighs on the company is not a collapse in gross margins, but the rising interest burden and persistently increasing capital-expenditure intensity. In 2025, interest expense had risen to $512 million, significantly above $277 million in 2021.

Cash-flow quality needs to be separated into pieces. The positive side is that operating cash flow in 2023, 2024, and 2025 was $867 million, $1.167 billion, and $1.169 billion, respectively, clearly higher than in 2021 and 2022. The negative side is that free cash flow has been negative for many consecutive years, and the gap is widening. The reason is simple: capital expenditures rose from $1.169 billion in 2021 to $2.483 billion in 2025, and capital-expenditure intensity climbed from about 31.9% of revenue to 56.9%. This shows that the company's growth does not become "easier as it grows"; instead, more growth requires more capital investment.

This is also why investors cannot look only at the P/E ratio. On a TTM basis, LNT had operating cash flow of about $1.29 billion, capital expenditures of about $2.32 billion, and free cash flow of about -$1.03 billion. The current P/FCF is meaningless because the denominator is negative. For a utility, this does not necessarily mean it is a bad business. But it does mean that shareholder returns depend more on whether newly invested capital can enter rate base in the future and earn allowed returns, rather than on the company being able to distribute a large amount of free cash to shareholders today.

Return on capital is the core evidence that this company is "adequate but not exceptional." Under current statistical definitions, LNT's ROE is about 11.31%, ROIC is about 3.37%, and ROA is about 2.62%. These are not poor for a utility, but they are not excellent either. More importantly, compared with peers, LNT's returns do not come with an especially cheap valuation: CMS has ROIC of about 4.36%, WEC about 4.29%, EVRG about 3.84%, while LNT is only at 3.37%. This means the current market valuation of LNT is not because it is materially more profitable; it is more because the market prices it as a "stable utility asset."

On the balance sheet, the company is not fragile, but it is far from loose. At the end of 2025, total debt was about $12.116 billion and common equity was about $7.334 billion. As of the end of March 2026, the company had $115 million in cash on the balance sheet, $11.007 billion in long-term debt excluding current maturities, plus a $400 million short-term term loan and commercial paper. The current interest coverage ratio is about 1.87 times, and Debt/EBITDA is about 6.38 times. This is not outrageous in the regulated utility sector, but it shows that the capital structure is already quite sensitive to interest rates and ratings.

Share count changes are also worth noting. The company has not significantly reduced share count through undervalued buybacks. Instead, share count has slowly risen: diluted shares were 253.3 million in 2023 and 257.8 million in 2025. As of March 2026, shares outstanding were about 258.28 million, up about 0.48% year over year. For a high-capex utility, this mild dilution is understandable, but from the perspective of "per-share intrinsic value growth," it is not a positive.

On accounting quality, I do not see obvious signs of fraud or aggressive recognition. The company received an unqualified audit opinion in 2025, and internal controls were effective. In Q1 2026, management continued to conclude that disclosure controls were effective. What investors need to watch is not "fabricated profits," but the complexity of regulatory accounting: the economic reality of earnings, regulatory assets, and regulatory liabilities ultimately depends on whether future rates can recover costs as expected. In other words, the earnings are not fake, but they are not the kind of earnings that can be casually equated with freely distributable cash.

Owner Earnings analysis. Here, facts, assumptions, and inferences must be strictly separated. The facts are: in 2025, net income attributable to common shareholders was $810 million, depreciation and amortization was $846 million, operating cash flow was $1.169 billion, and total construction and acquisition expenditures were $2.483 billion.

The difficulty is "maintenance capital expenditures" because the company does not directly disclose this figure. For a regulated utility, total capital expenditures include both maintenance of the existing network and compliance modules, as well as substantial growth investments in renewables, storage, gas-generation conversion, distribution expansion, and large-customer connections. Therefore, I use two approaches. Strict cash approach: using average operating cash flow over the past three years of about $1.068 billion, minus assumed maintenance capital expenditures of $800 million to $900 million, yields Owner Earnings of about $170 million to $270 million. Economic approach: adding 2025 net income attributable to common shareholders back with depreciation and amortization, then subtracting my assumed $850 million to $950 million of maintenance capital expenditures and $100 million to $150 million of normalized working-capital usage, yields Owner Earnings of about $550 million to $700 million. The large gap shows that this metric is highly sensitive for LNT.

Between these two approaches, I prefer a conservative but workable midpoint: about $600 million, because the pure cash approach can be distorted by annual regulatory recovery timing, tax-credit monetization, and receivables volatility, while the pure earnings approach can be too optimistic. Based on the current market value of about $18.53 billion, the market is paying roughly 25 to 34 times conservative owner earnings for the company. That is not cheap for a high-capex utility with low- to mid-single-digit true organic returns.

Valuation and Margin of Safety

Start with the current market valuation. LNT trades at about $71.61, with a TTM P/E of about 22.52 times, P/B of about 2.49 times, EV/EBITDA of about 16.28 times, P/OCF of about 14.36 times, and a dividend yield of about 2.99%. These numbers do not by themselves mean "absurdly expensive," but they are enough to show that the market does not treat it as a cheap asset.

Method 1: owner-earnings discounting. This method is the strictest for LNT and best reflects the question: "If I bought the whole business, how much distributable cash would I actually receive today?" My scenario assumptions are as follows: Bear case: starting with $600 million of owner earnings, growing 3% over the next 10 years, using an 8.5% discount rate and 2% terminal growth, the corresponding intrinsic value is about $40 to $50 per share. Base case: starting with $700 million, growing 4.5% over the next 10 years, using an 8% discount rate and 2.5% terminal growth, the corresponding intrinsic value is about $55 to $65 per share. Bull case: starting with $800 million, growing 6% over the next 10 years, using a 7.5% discount rate and 3% terminal growth, the corresponding intrinsic value is about $75 to $90 per share. This method produces a wide range because maintenance capital expenditures cannot be precisely separated from public disclosures. For utilities like LNT, DCF is more like the "strictest ceiling-price test" than the only truth.

Method 2: relative valuation. This step is less friendly to LNT's current price. Compared with comparable utilities, LNT's valuation sits on the expensive side: LNT's PE/PB/EV EBITDA/ROIC are about 22.52 times, 2.49 times, 16.28 times, and 3.37%, respectively; WEC is at 22.12 times, 2.56 times, 14.86 times, and 4.29%; CMS is at 20.02 times, 2.43 times, 13.56 times, and 4.36%; EVRG is at 21.85 times, 1.86 times, 12.48 times, and 3.84%; XEL is at 22.91 times, 2.08 times, 14.38 times, and 3.20%; AEE is at 19.43 times, 2.20 times, and 13.37 times. Simply put, LNT is valued more richly than most peers, but its capital returns are not clearly better. If LNT were priced at the more common peer range of 20 to 21 times PE, the implied value would be roughly $64 to $67 per share. At 2.2 times P/B, it would be about $63 per share. At 13.5 to 14.5 times EV/EBITDA, closer to the peer median, the equity value would fall roughly in the $52 to $59 per share range.

Method 3: asset or liquidation value. For a regulated utility, this method has limited usefulness. The reason is simple: the economic value of book assets is not "how much they can be sold for if dismantled," but "whether they can enter rate base and continue earning allowed returns." As of the end of March 2026, the company's common equity was about $7.422 billion, and book value was about $28.74 per share. This shows that the market price is far above net book value, but it does not directly prove overvaluation, because utility franchises are not priced by liquidation value. Conversely, book value also cannot provide investors with strong downside protection, because these assets' value depends heavily on regulatory recognition, customer load, and recoverability.

Combining the three methods, my conservative intrinsic value range is $52 to $60 per share, my reasonable intrinsic value range is $61 to $70 per share, and my optimistic intrinsic value range is $71 to $80 per share. At the current $71.61, the market price is roughly at the lower end of my optimistic range and above the upper end of my reasonable range. Relative to the midpoint of my reasonable range, about $65.5, the current share price carries a premium of roughly 9%.

Therefore, the margin of safety I would require should be at least a 15% to 20% discount to reasonable value. For LNT, the more attractive buy range is roughly $52 to $58. $60 to $70 can be viewed as an "acceptable but not cheap holding range." Above $78, I would regard it as clearly lacking appeal. Today's price is not at the level where it must be avoided, but it does not leave enough room for a long-term conservative investor.

Put differently, the most fragile assumption in the valuation is not "will the company go bankrupt," but "will the market remain willing to value a utility with long-term negative free cash flow and only moderate ROIC at more than 22 times earnings and more than 16 times EV/EBITDA." If future growth falls short of expectations, margins compress slightly, or the valuation returns to the peer median, the investment may still not lose much. But for new buyers, expected returns would become meaningfully thinner. This is the classic pattern of a good company at a bad price.

Risk Comparison and Investment Checklist

The most important risks, in my view, are concentrated in five categories. Regulatory risk: cost recovery, allowed returns, individual customer rate mechanisms, retired-asset treatment, and tax-credit pass-through; if any link falls short of expectations, earnings and cash recovery could be compressed. Capital-expenditure and financing risk: the company needs continuous large investment, and current interest coverage is not high, making shareholder value very sensitive to interest rates and credit conditions. Load-realization risk: data center and large-customer projects could be delayed, reduced, or moved elsewhere, leaving larger front-loaded investment pressure. Technology and business-model change risk: behind-the-meter, customer self-generation, and third-party energy supply are all listed by the company itself as risks. Valuation risk: the current price is already not cheap; even if the business does not deteriorate, valuation mean reversion could hurt returns.

The strongest opposing view is not complicated: LNT may be a decent utility, but it may not be a good enough stock. A short seller or cautious investor would say that the market is using a valuation close to or even above higher-quality peers to buy a company that does not have higher returns, has long-term negative free cash flow, and is meaningfully dependent on financing. The so-called data center story may first translate into capital expenditures and financing needs in the short term, rather than immediately translating into high-quality free cash flow per share. I think this opposing view has force.

What facts would overturn my investment judgment or force me to admit I was wrong? If the following occur over the next two to three years, I would revise my view upward: first, large-customer and data center load materializes faster than expected, and regulators allow the company to earn high-quality returns through individual customer rate mechanisms; second, EPS and dividends maintain steady 5% to 7% growth without obvious shareholder dilution; third, Debt/EBITDA and interest coverage do not worsen and instead improve.
