A single direct customer accounted for 19% of revenue, while customer sites in Taiwan accounted for 36%, so concentration is not low. The author’s reasonable buying range is $90–130 per share. The current price still carries a significant premium even against the optimistic-case intrinsic value of $180–240, making this a good company at an expensive price.

Here is the conclusion upfront: Teradyne is a business I can understand, and the quality of its core asset is not low, but at today's price it looks more like a good company at a bad price. The truly valuable part of the company is its semiconductor automated test equipment business. That business benefits from rising chip complexity, AI/HBM/advanced packaging, and expanding demand for system-level test, while also sitting in a highly concentrated oligopoly. The problem is that the current share price has already pulled forward fairly aggressive medium- to long-term optimism, while the robotics business is still losing money, customer concentration is not low, and the industry itself is clearly cyclical. From the perspective of a long-term owner with a horizon of more than 10 years and a balanced but conservative bias, I would rather put TER on a high-priority watchlist than buy it today.

My preliminary conclusion: If I viewed myself as a buyer acquiring a business for the long term, I would be willing to study and track Teradyne seriously, but I would not readily sign an offer at the current price. Today's question is not "is this a bad company," but "is this company worth this much." At a current price of about $389.14 and a market cap of about $61.44 billion, market expectations are already very high.

Business Understanding

Teradyne's current business structure is fairly clear. In its latest disclosures, the company divides the business into three segments: Semiconductor Test, Robotics, and Product Test. In 2025, revenue from these three segments was $2.524 billion, $308 million, and $358 million, respectively, accounting for 79%, 10%, and 11% of total revenue; corresponding pre-tax profit was about $701 million, -$99 million, and $61 million. In other words, today's profit engine is almost entirely semiconductor test, while robotics looks more like a "long-term option" that is still proving itself, not a stable cash cow.

The way this business makes money is not complicated: Teradyne sells test equipment, test platforms, related accessories, and services to chip companies, IDMs, fabless firms, OSATs, and electronic system manufacturers. In the latest quarter, the company also stated clearly that its automated test systems cover semiconductors, wireless products, silicon photonics, complex electronic systems, and other areas; the robotics business mainly consists of collaborative robot arms and AMRs. In Q1 2026, company revenue was $1.282 billion, of which $1.111 billion came from semiconductor test, $91 million from robotics, and $80 million from product test. This again shows that Teradyne is still essentially a semiconductor test company, not an industrial technology company with balanced multiple engines.

The "recurring" nature of revenue is not the highly predictable recurring revenue of SaaS. In 2025, company product revenue was $2.660 billion and service revenue was $530 million, with service accounting for only 16.6% of total revenue. So this is not a "high-subscription, high-renewal" business model. It is a capital equipment model led by high-value equipment sales, with services as a supplement. The advantages are high technical content, high unit value, and decent gross margin; the drawbacks are that order cadence is heavily affected by customer capex and industry conditions, with naturally weaker predictability than daily consumer goods or sticky software.

The cost structure does show some quality. The company's total gross margin was 58.2% in 2025, 58.5% in 2024, and 57.4% in 2023; even in weaker years, gross margin did not collapse. Operating margin was 20.4% in 2025, lower than the peaks in 2021 and 2022, but still substantial. In other words, this is a high-gross-margin, high-R&D equipment business that is cyclical but not fragile.

The dependency profile is what really needs attention. In 2025, Teradyne disclosed that two "designated customers" drove 12% and 10% of company revenue, respectively, while another direct customer accounted for 19% of consolidated revenue; the top five direct customers together accounted for 44% of revenue. At the same time, by customer site in 2025, Taiwan accounted for 36%, Korea 14%, and China 14%. This shows that while the company is not dependent on a single customer for everything, it is far from customer-diversified and geographically diversified enough for conservative investors to relax.

Put more directly: this is a business I can understand, but it is not the kind of business that is simple enough to "hold with eyes closed for five years". I can understand why it makes money, and I can understand why the AI wave benefits it. But I can also understand that if customer capex falls back, a major customer shifts its test strategy, or the adoption of a technology node slows, revenue and earnings will swing meaningfully. If the stock market closed for five years, I would be willing to own its core semiconductor test business; but at today's price, I would not want to blindly own the whole company together with robotics losses and high expectations.

Industry Structure and Moat

Semiconductor ATE is not an easy industry, but it is often a good company in a difficult industry, rather than an asset-light consumer business that earns money effortlessly. The reason is simple: the industry has strong technical barriers, long customer validation cycles, high costs of product failure, and high concentration at the top, but it is also highly cyclical, follows semiconductor capex and product complexity, and cannot avoid large swings. In its 2026 shareholder letter, Teradyne explicitly anchored its medium-term performance model to a semiconductor ATE TAM of $12 billion to $14 billion, and described the corresponding 2025 market size as about $9 billion. That itself is an admission that the industry it operates in is not a linear-growth industry, but one that trends upward over the medium and long term while swinging heavily in the short and medium term.

Long-term industry demand is not poor. AI, high-bandwidth memory, advanced packaging, silicon photonics, and system-level test are all lifting test complexity and test cost. Teradyne management said in Q1 2026 that about 70% of revenue was related to AI-driven demand, up from about 60% in Q4 2025. This means the company is benefiting from a real AI wave. The issue is exactly here: are you buying a business today, or are you buying boom-period profits in a favorable window? For long-term value investors, the two cannot be treated as the same thing.

On competition, the most important fact is this: the semiconductor test market is an oligopoly. Advantest states clearly in its investor materials that Advantest and Teradyne together account for about 80% of the tester market. This shows that Teradyne's core lane is not a red ocean so crowded that it has no moat. Its truly strong rival is mainly Advantest, not any random startup that can overturn the market overnight. Cohu is also a competitor, but its scale and earnings quality are much weaker, with 2025 full-year revenue of $453 million and still a GAAP loss.

If looking only at semiconductor test, my moat judgment would be higher than for the company as a whole. Teradyne's moat mainly comes from several factors:

For the group as a whole, the moat is diverging, not widening in one direction. The semiconductor test moat is broadly stable and perhaps slightly strengthening; the robotics moat is still under construction, with profitability unproven. Robotics pre-tax loss was $99.37 million in 2025, larger than $77.55 million in 2024; in Q1 2026, robotics was still just below breakeven, with a pre-tax loss of about $960,000. If robotics cannot move from "having a brand and installed base" to "making sustainable money," it will not add to the moat. It will instead drag down the quality of the group's valuation.

On pricing power and recession resilience, my judgment is as follows. Fact: the company's gross margin from 2020 to 2025 stayed largely in the 57%-60% range, showing that its products are not pure price takers. Inference: this means Teradyne has some bargaining power in technology upgrades and critical test stages. View: this pricing power is not a consumer-monopoly type of "raise prices whenever it wants"; it is closer to "as long as the technology edge and customer validation remain, prices are not easily broken." In an economic downturn, the company as a whole should still have earnings and cash-flow resilience, but earnings elasticity will come under clear pressure. The part that can truly hold up in a downturn is the core test business, not robotics.

Industry attractiveness score: 3/5. Moat strength score: 3.5/5.

Management and Capital Allocation

For management, start with the structural facts. Current CEO Greg Smith took over in February 2023 and joined the board; before that, he had led both semiconductor test and industrial automation/robotics businesses. In October 2025, the company also completed a CFO transition, with Michelle Turner taking over as CFO. This is not an "outside financial engineering team"; it is a team with clear business background and internal development traces.

On governance mechanisms, the company has some arrangements worth acknowledging. Search results for the 2026 proxy statement show that the company maintains stock ownership/retention guidelines, and all non-employee directors met the requirements at the end of 2025; the company has also disclosed an executive incentive clawback policy, applying to cash and equity incentives earned based on financial metrics. These arrangements at least show that formal governance is not loose.

The compensation orientation is not completely off track either. Teradyne's past proxy filing search results show that executive cash incentives are tied to revenue growth, PBIT/margin, and strategic objectives, and management compensation is clearly not a pure fixed-salary model. This structure may not be perfect, but directionally it emphasizes operating results rather than only scale expansion.

The capital allocation record is what truly deserves analysis. In recent years, Teradyne has been doing five things at the same time: reinvestment, dividends, buybacks, M&A/strategic investments, and maintaining a net-cash balance sheet. On shareholder returns, in 2025 the company repurchased 6.3 million shares, spending $708.7 million, at an average repurchase price of $112.21; in 2024 it repurchased 1.7 million shares, spending $199.4 million, at an average price of $114.63; earlier, in 2022 and 2021, it also carried out sizable repurchases at average prices of $103.69 and $125.74. Looking back from today's share price near $389, these historical buybacks were not bad, at least not frantic repurchases at absurd highs. More importantly, in Q1 2026 the company repurchased only about $5.5 million of stock, compared with about $157 million in the prior-year period, showing that management did not keep aggressively chasing buybacks after the share price surged. I view this positively.

On dividends, Teradyne has a stable but very small cash dividend. In January 2026, the board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.13 per share; based on the current share price, the dividend yield is only about 0.13%. This means the company is not a typical "high-dividend return" asset. Holding-period returns must mainly come from intrinsic value growth, not dividends.

M&A and strategic investment deserve more reservations. In 2025, the company reorganized its Product Test structure and, over the past two years, advanced moves such as the Technoprobe strategic partnership/equity investment and the MultiLane Test Products joint venture. The annual report also disclosed that in early 2026 the company planned to invest about $157 million to acquire a 75% equity stake in MLTP to serve AI data-center high-speed interconnect test demand. Directionally, these moves are not random expansion. They are attempts to fill links around the test ecosystem. The issue is that these capital allocation moves have not yet gone through a long enough period of cash-return verification. For conservative investors, I would view them as "logical but not yet fully graded," rather than already proven high-level capital allocation.

My management judgment is therefore: basic honesty and long-term orientation are acceptable, buyback behavior has been broadly rational, and the balance sheet remains restrained; but given the prolonged robotics losses and several strategic investments that have not yet fully converted into high returns, I am unwilling to give a very high score.

Financial Quality

Start with the most important point: Teradyne's financial quality is generally good, but profitability is clearly cyclical.

The table below summarizes core operating data from 2020 to 2025. It shows that Teradyne experienced a high-cycle, high-profit year in 2021, then went through a 2022-2024 downturn and recovery, with a clear rebound in 2025. During the period, operating cash flow was positive every year and free cash flow was positive every year, making it more solid than many cyclical technology companies. In the table below, 2020-2022 data comes from the 2022 10-K, 2023-2025 data comes from the 2025 10-K; free cash flow and related items in the table are this report's calculations based on the cash flow statement.

Breaking the issue down:

Revenue growth: revenue CAGR from 2020 to 2025 was actually close to stagnant, showing that this is not a straight-line upward track. But that does not mean the business has deteriorated; it reflects the industry's large swings. By Q1 2026, company revenue rose sharply year over year to $1.282 billion, showing that the cycle inflection has already appeared.

Margin trend: gross margin is relatively stable, while operating margin and net margin fluctuate more, showing that Teradyne's business model has structural gross-margin advantages but remains affected by utilization, product mix, and the cycle. The 2025 operating margin of 20.4% was clearly below the 2021 peak; high-profit years should therefore not be treated as permanent normality.

Operating cash flow and free cash flow: both were positive in each of the six years, and free cash flow was mostly close to net income, with only 2022 notably weaker due to working capital and capex factors. This means Teradyne's earnings are not merely "paper profits." At least based on disclosed cash flow, accounting profit and cash profit generally match well.

Returns on capital: using average shareholder equity and estimated invested capital, Teradyne's average ROE in 2023-2025 was about 18%-20%, and estimated ROIC was about 25%-29%; higher-cycle years were even higher. This level of return is quite good. It must be emphasized, though, that this reflects both business quality and the effects of a net-cash balance sheet and cycle highs, and should not be mechanically extrapolated.

Balance sheet: at the end of 2025, the company had $448.3 million of cash and marketable securities, $200 million of short-term debt, and still a positive net cash position; by Q1 2026, short-term debt had fallen to zero, with cash and marketable securities of about $394 million. Interest expense was only $6.846 million in 2025, while operating profit was as high as $650 million, giving it very high interest coverage. This is a very solid balance sheet.

Working capital: this needs close monitoring. At the end of 2025, accounts receivable was $786.9 million, higher than $471.4 million in 2024; inventory also rose from $298.5 million to $379.6 million. By Q1 2026, although operating cash flow was $265.1 million, accounts receivable alone consumed $322 million of cash in the quarter. My interpretation is that this is consistent with order ramp and a revenue inflection, but it also means high growth is not cash-flow free.

Share count: despite stock-based compensation and historical convertible debt effects, diluted shares fell from 183.6 million shares in 2021 to 159.7 million shares in 2025, which is positive for per-share value.

Accounting risk: I did not see obvious signs of fraud or aggressive recognition in the company's recent disclosures. Management disclosed that controls were effective, and annual reports did not show auditor disagreements. But in the 2025 audit, Robotics goodwill impairment assessment was listed by PwC as a critical audit matter, with special audit attention on assumptions for revenue growth, EBITDA margin, and discount rate. This does not imply fraud, but it does show that the carrying value of robotics assets is sensitive to future operating assumptions and is an accounting risk that must be tracked continuously.

My overall judgment is: Teradyne's profit is largely real cash profit, not pure accounting profit; growth does not require massive fixed-capital investment, but it does involve working-capital volatility; the company still has strong survivability in economic downturns and industry troughs.

Owner Earnings and Intrinsic Value

Here I use a Buffett-style "owner earnings" approach, while clearly separating facts, assumptions, and my estimates.

Facts: Teradyne's 2025 GAAP net income was $554 million; 2025 operating cash flow was $674 million; capital expenditures were $224 million; Q1 2026 operating cash flow was $265 million, with capital expenditures of $64.73 million. On a rolling 12-month estimate, Teradyne's TTM revenue was about $3.787 billion, TTM net income about $854 million, TTM operating cash flow about $778 million, and TTM free cash flow about $553 million. The current price is about $389.14, and the market cap is about $61.44 billion.

Assumptions: Not all capital expenditures are maintenance capex. Because 2025 capex of $224 million was significantly higher than depreciation and amortization in the same period, about $128 million, and because the company is investing in semiconductor test expansion and new product positioning, I do not treat all capex as "maintenance." To stay conservative, I assume maintenance capex is about 70%-75% of total capex. This is an estimate, not a company disclosure.

Under this framework, I get two layers of Owner Earnings conclusions:

Conservative measure one: TTM operating cash flow of $778 million minus maintenance capex of $157 million to $169 million gives Owner Earnings of about $609 million to $621 million. Conservative measure two: if another discount is applied for working-capital volatility, the Owner Earnings range can be lowered to $450 million to $550 million.

Therefore, I prefer to use a midpoint with a conservative bias for Owner Earnings: about $550 million. This means the current market cap equals about 111x owner earnings; even using the looser $620 million measure, it is still close to 99x. For a cyclical capital equipment company, that is a very high valuation.

Valuation Method One

The following discounted models are all my estimates, not company guidance. The discounting object is Owner Earnings, the share count is based on about 156.5 million shares at the end of Q1 2026, and net cash is treated as about $394 million.

Why are these results so far below the market price? Because the current price implies more than "Teradyne will keep growing." It implies high growth for many years, smooth delivery of the target model, no deterioration in competitive structure, robotics not becoming a drag, and a still-high terminal valuation. If any one of those does not hold, returns at the current price will come under pressure quickly.

Valuation Method Two

On relative valuation, Teradyne is not cheap today. Based on the current price and TTM data, Teradyne is roughly trading at:

  • P/E of about 72x

  • P/S of about 16x

  • P/B of about 19.5x

  • P/FCF of about 111x

  • FCF Yield of about 0.9%

Among comparables, public market pages for Advantest show it currently trades around 54.07x trailing P/E and 17.98x P/S, so the market is not cheap there either; Cohu has a current share price of about $51.50 and a market cap of about $2.35 billion, but because it is still loss-making, trailing P/E is negative, and 2025 revenue was only $453 million with a full-year GAAP net loss. So relative valuation does not tell me "Teradyne is cheap." It tells me: good assets in this track have all been bid up by the market, and Teradyne is definitely not an overlooked undervalued name.

Valuation Method Three

An asset or liquidation value method has limited relevance for Teradyne, because the market is not buying it for book net assets. It is buying test platforms, customer relationships, technology validation, future growth, and possible AI benefits. Even so, the asset method tells us one important thing: the current price is almost entirely paying for future franchise value.

At the end of Q1 2026, company shareholder equity was about $3.144 billion, equal to book value per share of about $20; cash and marketable securities were about $394 million, equal to about $2.5 per share. At the end of 2025, the company also had an $537 million equity-method investment. In other words, even if net cash and some financial assets are included, they are far from supporting today's market quote near $389/share. That is not a bad thing, but it means the valuation depends heavily on future operating delivery, not currently verifiable assets.

Under this framework, the current share price of $389.14 still has a significant premium even to the upper end of my optimistic range; the premium to the conservative and base ranges is much larger. In other words, the current price has no margin of safety.

Risks, Comparisons, and Final Conclusion

Start with the most important margin-of-safety issue. I believe Teradyne currently lacks sufficient margin of safety. The most fragile assumption in the valuation is not "can the company survive," but "can AI-driven test momentum stay elevated long enough to support today's valuation." If future growth falls short of expectations, margins retreat from 2026 boom levels, or valuation multiples normalize from today's highs, then even if the company remains a good company, investors may still suffer significant capital losses that take a long time to recover.

From the perspective of permanent capital loss, the risks I worry about most fall into the following categories. At the fact level: customer concentration is high, AI-related revenue already accounts for a very high share, robotics continues to lose money and goodwill impairment assumptions are sensitive, and the industry itself is highly cyclical. At the inference level: once AI test momentum returns from abnormal strength to normality, Teradyne's valuation center may shift down meaningfully.

The strongest bear case is actually very powerful: Teradyne today is not a "cheap high-quality asset," but a "high-quality asset embraced at a high price under the AI narrative." The market may not be wrong. It is betting that Teradyne will exceed expectations for several consecutive years in AI test, system-level test, silicon photonics, and data-center interconnect test. But if these opportunities merely push the company from $300 million to $400 million of annual free cash flow to around $1 billion, then relative to today's $61.4 billion market cap, returns may still not be attractive. In other words, bears do not need to deny that Teradyne is a good company; they only need to believe that it is not good enough to justify this price.

Compared with other opportunities, this point is even clearer. Teradyne's current TTM FCF Yield is about 0.9%, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has recently been about 4.56%. This means buying TER is not buying "immediately visible cash return"; it is buying a combined bet on "very high growth for many years + very high strategic position + no collapse in high valuation." For balanced, conservative investors, that demand is too high. By comparison, the S&P 500 covers about 80% of the investable market cap of the U.S. equity market, with higher diversification and error tolerance. At the current price, I do not see buying TER as clearly superior to buying the index.
