The engineering and manufacturing platform, together with the global local-for-local footprint, forms a solid moat; however, the USD 208.60 share price implies a P/FCF of about 18x, while the Owner Earnings yield is only 5.2%-5.6%, so the static spread over the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield of 4.50% is not especially large.

The conservative intrinsic value range is USD 175-195. A good company, but the price is merely fair -- automotive exposure still accounts for 75% of Transportation, so cyclicality cannot be ignored. The Richards acquisition lifted goodwill to USD 7.437 billion, and whether ROIC will be diluted remains to be proven. The ideal buying range is USD 165-185.

Conclusion First

Data and methodology note. Unless otherwise stated, all amounts below are in U.S. dollars. The "current price" uses data around the close on May 26, 2026 U.S. Eastern time, namely TEL = $208.60 per share. The financial history in this report is based mainly on the company's annual reports, 10-Q filings, and proxy statements. To fill in FY2021-FY2022 and TTM/current valuation ratios, I also use secondary data compiled on an SEC basis and cross-check the key figures against the company's FY2025 annual report and FY2026 Q2 10-Q.

Initial rating: Watch. Margin of safety at the current price: not obvious. Better suited investors: long-term value investors who are willing to hold high-quality industrial businesses, accept some cyclicality, and value free cash flow and returns on capital. It is less suitable for conservative cigar-butt investors seeking deep undervaluation and a stock that is "cheap right now."

Core judgment. Facts: TE Connectivity is an important global industrial technology company in connectors and sensors. FY2025 revenue was $17.262 billion, gross margin was 35.22%, and operating margin was 18.60%. Operating cash flow in the first half of FY2026 reached $1.812 billion, capital expenditure was $528 million, and cash generation was very strong. FY2026 Q2 also shows that the company's growth is being driven mainly by the Industrial side, especially digital data networks and energy.

Inference: This is an understandable, relatively high-quality business, though it is far from flawless. Its advantage does not come from a single hit product. It comes from the system-level capability formed by a global manufacturing network, engineering collaboration, deep customer embedding, and reliability experience in harsh environments. The moat is real, but I would define it as moderately strong, rather than absolutely unchallengeable.

View: Buying at $208.60 looks more like buying a good company than making a clearly undervalued transaction. For holders with a 10-year-plus horizon, TEL may still deliver decent returns, but those returns depend heavily on sustained high growth in Industrial, resilience in Transportation, and the market's willingness to keep assigning a medium-to-high valuation multiple. That makes it closer to a high-quality asset at a fair price than a cheap bargain with an obvious margin of safety.

The three largest uncertainties. First, whether demand related to AI data centers and energy grids can last for many years, rather than merely represent a temporary order peak. Second, automotive exposure remains high; if global auto production and customer stocking cycles weaken, TEL's "defensiveness" may be overestimated. Third, whether the Richards Manufacturing acquisition can truly bring incremental high-ROIC growth, rather than only one-time revenue expansion and more goodwill.

Business Understanding

How This Company Actually Makes Money

Facts: After its FY2025 restructuring, TE kept only two reporting segments: Transportation Solutions and Industrial Solutions. Transportation contributed 54% of FY2025 revenue, while Industrial contributed 46%. Transportation mainly sells connector systems, terminals, sensors, heat-shrink tubing, relays, and application tooling, with end markets including automotive, commercial transportation, and sensors. Industrial mainly serves digital data networks, automation and intelligent living, aerospace, defense and marine, energy, and medical. The company says the combined market size addressed by the two segments is about $200 billion, but this is an internal company definition, not an independent third-party market share report.

Facts: Within Transportation, automotive accounts for 75% of segment revenue, commercial transportation for 15%, and sensors for 10%. Within Industrial, digital data networks accounts for 28%, automation and intelligent living for 27%, aerospace, defense and marine for 19%, energy for 17%, and medical for 9%. This means that, on the company's own definitions, TEL still has heavy automotive exposure, but its growth elasticity is shifting toward higher-growth industrial subsegments.

Facts: The company sells products in about 130 countries. In FY2025, around 75% of sales came from direct sales, with the rest from third-party distribution. Revenue by geography was Asia-Pacific 38%, EMEA 33%, and the Americas 29%. The company explicitly disclosed that no single customer accounted for a significant portion of net sales in FY2025, FY2024, or FY2023. This meaningfully reduces the fatal risk of losing one customer.

Facts: TE's revenue model is essentially selling connectors, sensors, and related system solutions. It is not a subscription model, so revenue is not "recurring" in the same stable way as software. Yet it is also not a typical one-off project business, because once many products are designed into customer platforms, they continue to ship with vehicle models, equipment platforms, factories, or infrastructure buildout cycles. The company discloses that its relationships with many industry-leading customers "typically extend over many years," and that it participates early in next-generation technology roadmaps by jointly developing new products.

Inference: The more accurate description of this business is: above-average repeatability, medium predictability, and meaningful sensitivity to end-market production and capital spending cycles. It is neither SaaS nor a daily consumer staple. It is more like a critical industrial components platform that gets designed into customer systems. As long as customer platforms remain in volume production, revenue continues. When end demand weakens in automotive, industrial automation, communications equipment, medical, and other markets, TEL's orders and profits will slow as well. The model is understandable over the long run, but it is certainly not volatility-free.

Cost Structure, Dependence, and Understandability

Facts: In FY2025, TEL generated $17.262 billion of revenue, cost of goods sold was $11.183 billion, and gross profit was $6.079 billion. Selling, general, and administrative expenses were $1.866 billion, R&D expenses were $829 million, and operating profit was $3.211 billion. Structurally, this is a company with a strong manufacturing character: materials, manufacturing, plant efficiency, procurement, yield, logistics, and engineering investment all matter. The company had about 93,000 employees globally in FY2025, including about 55,000 in manufacturing roles.

Facts: At its Investor Day, management further described the moat as 10,000 engineers, 5,000 new development projects, 120 factories, 70%+ local-for-local manufacturing, and joint development capability that is "embedded in customer roadmaps." This kind of language has a self-promotional management flavor, but it at least shows that TE sees its core competitive assets as engineering and manufacturing systems, not advertising brand power.

Facts: The company does not depend on a single patent. The annual report states clearly that although the company owns patents and trademarks, its competitive position and operations do not depend on any single patent or group of related patents. This means its defense comes mainly from harder-to-quantify system capabilities and customer relationships, rather than legal exclusivity.

View: If the stock market closed for 5 years, I would be willing to own this business, provided the entry price was reasonable. The reason is simple: this company is not telling a sentiment-driven story. It provides real connection and sensing capability to autos, grids, factories, aerospace, and data centers. Demand exists, the products matter, cash flow is real, and management has some discipline. The issue is not whether it can be held, but at what price it should be held.

Business understandability score: 4/5. I understand how it makes money, and I understand why it can keep making money. The 1-point deduction comes from its many end markets, complex product mix, and the fact that consolidation structure and tax accounting can occasionally make net income noisy. It is less transparent than a single-business company.

Industry and Competitive Landscape

Industry Stage and Long-Term Demand

Facts: TE does not sit in a single industry. It operates across an industrial connection ecosystem spanning automotive electronic connection, industrial connection, sensors, data center interconnect, grid equipment connection, and medical intervention components. In its FY2025 annual report, the company describes this as a combined market of about $200 billion. At its 2025 Investor Day, it also emphasized serving an approximately $130 billion connection market. Both are management-defined TAM figures. They can indicate strategic direction, but should not be treated directly as externally audited market share data.

Facts: At the 2025 Investor Day, management explicitly set a target of 6%-8% revenue growth through the cycle, while continuing to expand margins. The growth drivers are AI, next-generation transportation, grid modernization, automation, and related trends. By FY2026 H1, digital data networks within Industrial grew 58.8% year over year, energy grew 71.9%, automotive within Transportation grew 5.5%, and commercial transportation grew 20.0%. These figures show that TEL is not simply waiting for traditional automotive recovery. It is using a new round of industrial capital spending.

Inference: The industry profile can be summarized as: a mature manufacturing base plus structural growth lanes. Automotive connectors and industrial connectors are mature industries, but content per unit is rising because of vehicle electrification and intelligence, data center bandwidth upgrades, energy grid upgrades, and automation retrofits. Therefore, this is neither a purely declining industry nor a full high-growth industry. It is a mid-speed, visibly cyclical industrial technology industry with large differences across subsegments.

Competitors, Profit Structure, and Pricing Power

Facts: The major competitors TE lists directly in its annual report include Yazaki, Aptiv, Sumitomo, Sensata, Honeywell, Molex, and Amphenol on the Transportation side, and Amphenol, Hubbell, Carlisle, Integer, Molex, Omron, JST, and KET on the Industrial side. This shows an industry with multiple oligopolistic leaders alongside many niche players, instead of a single winner-take-all structure.

Facts: The company also discloses that competition in these industries is intense, with competitive factors including product breadth, innovation, price, quality, delivery, and service, and that it has faced and will continue to face downward pricing pressure. At the same time, because costs and tariffs have risen, the company has implemented price increases in some businesses in recent years. This indicates that TEL has some pricing power, but it is not the free-form pricing power of a consumer brand. It is closer to price recovery supported by product criticality and tight supply-demand conditions.

Inference: The industry profit pool is not highly concentrated in one company, but it is not chaotic either. The companies that can earn better profits are usually those able to meet requirements for global delivery, quality certification, cross-region engineering support, platformized product families, and cost control at the same time. TEL belongs in this group. Amphenol is often seen by the market as the higher-quality and higher-return benchmark among peers. Aptiv and Sensata are also strong in some niches, but their overall operating quality and financial resilience are less balanced than TE's.

View: If forced to choose a label, I would define TEL as a good company in a moderately attractive industry, rather than a reluctant winner in a poor industry. Connectors and sensors themselves may look unglamorous, but they are critical in high-voltage, high-speed, and high-reliability settings, and switching suppliers is not always low-cost. Still, this is not a super industry that can fully detach from macro cycles and win effortlessly for decades.

Industry attractiveness score: 3/5. Long-term demand is fine and the structural direction is attractive. However, cyclicality, price competition, customer bargaining power, and technological evolution make it difficult for this industry to deserve a top-tier score.

Table interpretation. The "strong/medium/weak" judgments above are not abstract impressions. They are based on TE's disclosures about customer co-creation, global factories and engineering teams, direct sales mix, lack of single-customer dependence, lack of reliance on a single patent, and its continuing buyback and dividend record.

How Deep Is the Moat?

Facts: At Investor Day, management directly described the moat with customers as a "moat." The core elements are joint development, regional engineering design capability, a global manufacturing network, process excellence, AI/simulation-accelerated development, embedding in customer roadmaps, and local-for-local manufacturing. The annual report adds that TE maintains long-standing relationships with many industry leaders and identifies next-generation technology trends through joint development.

Inference: This moat is closer to a compound barrier of design-in plus quality validation plus global fulfillment plus engineering collaboration. A competitor may not need very long to replicate one product, but replicating a TE platform that can supply at scale and with stability across automotive, high-speed data, grids, medical, aerospace, and other scenarios usually requires many years, global customer validation, and billions of dollars in factory, engineering, and M&A investment. Therefore, I think the moat is stable overall and slightly widening in some areas. Industrial is benefiting more from AI and grid upgrades, while Transportation is broadly stable.

Facts: TEL can raise prices to some extent in an inflationary and tariff-heavy environment. The annual report states clearly that because costs and tariffs have increased, certain businesses have implemented price increases in recent years. Meanwhile, even during weaker demand in FY2023, the company still achieved an operating margin of 14.37% and free cash flow of $2.400 billion, showing strong earnings and cash-flow resilience in a downturn.

Inference: The margin improvement of recent years reflects both structural improvement and tailwinds. The structural component comes from mix upgrade, operating efficiency, and a rising contribution from high-growth industrial businesses. The tailwind component comes from strong 2025-2026 conditions in data centers, energy, and parts of transportation. High margins are not purely cyclical windfall, but we also should not assume 2026 strength will continue in a straight line.

Moat strength score: 4/5. This is neither a Coca-Cola-style brand moat nor a Microsoft-style ecosystem moat. But in the world of industrial connection, TE's moat is already quite solid. The real issue to watch is not whether the moat exists, but whether the market has already paid a fairly full price for it.

Management and Capital Allocation

Is Management Trustworthy?

Facts: TE discloses in its annual report that the company's CEO and segment leaders have an average of more than 25 years of industry experience. The proxy statement shows that the company has share ownership requirements for executives: the CEO must hold shares equal to 6 times annual salary, while the CFO and other senior executives must hold 3 times annual salary. For long-term incentives, equity awards for the CEO and other NEOs in FY2025 used a 50% stock options plus 50% performance stock units structure.

Facts: From an ownership perspective, however, management and directors are not "high-conviction owners." The proxy statement discloses that as of January 8, 2026, all incumbent directors, director nominees, and executive officers together beneficially owned only about 0.6% of outstanding shares, and no incumbent director or executive officer owned more than 1%. This means management incentives come more from compensation design and equity grants than from large personal capital exposure like a private owner.

View: My assessment of management is therefore: rational, professional, and strong in execution, with only average hard alignment with shareholders. I do not see obvious integrity issues, and I do not see an exaggerated capital-market narrative. But if you strongly prefer companies where management owns a large personal stake, TEL is not the classic case.

Is Capital Allocation Rational?

Facts: In recent years, the company has consistently returned cash to shareholders through dividends plus buybacks. On dividends, dividend per share rose from $1.96 in FY2021 to $2.72 in FY2025. In FY2026, the board increased the quarterly dividend to $0.78 per share in March 2026. On buybacks, diluted shares fell from 333 million in FY2021 to 299 million in FY2025. In FY2025 alone, the company repurchased about 8 million shares for $1.356 billion. In FY2024, it repurchased about 14 million shares for $1.991 billion. In FY2023, it repurchased about 8 million shares for $946 million.

Inference: Dividing repurchase dollars by repurchased shares, the average repurchase prices in FY2023, FY2024, and FY2025 were roughly $118, $142, and $170. Compared with the current share price of about $208.60, these buybacks did not clearly occur at extreme overvaluation. They look more like relatively rational long-term share-count reduction, rather than a pure effort to cosmetically improve EPS.

Facts: On M&A, TE acquired Richards Manufacturing in fiscal 2025. The FY2025 annual report and the Irish statutory accounts disclose that the acquisition contributed about $179 million of sales in FY2025. By the first half of FY2026, the energy business within Industrial had increased by $356 million year over year, of which about $271 million came from acquisitions. At the same time, balance sheet goodwill rose from $5.801 billion in FY2024 to $7.126 billion in FY2025, and further to $7.437 billion in FY2026 Q2. Long-term debt also increased from $3.332 billion in FY2024 to $4.842 billion in FY2025.

Inference: The strategic direction of this acquisition is understandable. It strengthens exposure to grids, power distribution, and energy infrastructure, exactly where management is emphasizing rising electricity demand. But on whether it creates value, it is still too early to conclude, because we do not yet have a long enough post-acquisition ROIC record. For now, it can only be described as reasonable-looking, but still unproven.

Facts: A positive point is that leverage has not gone out of control after the acquisition. By FY2026 Q2, cash was $1.110 billion, short-term debt was $102 million, long-term debt was $5.553 billion, and total debt was about $5.655 billion. FY2026 TTM net debt/EBITDA was about 0.98x, compared with about 1.10x in FY2025. Meanwhile, FY2025 interest expense was $77 million, against FY2025 EBIT of $3.211 billion, leaving very ample interest coverage.

Management and capital allocation score: 4/5. I recognize its discipline in dividends, buybacks, and leverage control, and I also recognize its strategic direction. The main deductions are low insider ownership, the need for time to verify acquisition value, and a meaningful stock-option component in equity incentives, which may make management somewhat more attentive to share price performance.

Financial Quality and Owner Earnings

The table below focuses on FY2021-FY2025, which is more useful for observing long-term quality than looking only at one year's highs and lows.

How to Read the Financial Quality

Facts: From FY2021 to FY2025, TEL's revenue CAGR was about 3.7%, but free cash flow CAGR was about 12.7%, and diluted share count declined by about 2.7% per year on average. This shows that the company is not growing through blind scale expansion. It is advancing on margin improvement, cash-flow improvement, and share-count reduction through buybacks at the same time.

Facts: Operating margin improved from 16.31% in FY2021 to 18.60% in FY2025. Free cash flow margin rose from 13.31% in FY2021 to 18.56% in FY2025. At Investor Day, management also defined the long-term model as 100%+ FCF conversion, 30%+ incremental operating margins, and mid-teens adjusted ROIC. This is a management target rather than an audited result, but it is at least consistent with the improvement direction of recent years.

Facts: FY2025 net income looks weak at only $1.842 billion, but that does not mean cash flow deteriorated. The annual report discloses that income tax expense for the year included a $574 million increase in valuation allowance for deferred tax assets related to Swiss tax credits, plus a $44 million increase in valuation allowance for U.S. tax losses and tax credits. These items had a large impact on net income, but they are not a like-for-like deterioration in operating cash flow. For that reason, FY2025 operating cash flow reached $4.139 billion and free cash flow reached $3.203 billion, setting a high level instead.

Inference: This point is very important: TEL's earnings quality is better assessed through operating cash flow, free cash flow, and ROIC than by staring only at one year's GAAP net income. FY2024 net income was lifted by tax benefits, while FY2025 was depressed by tax valuation allowances. Looking only at the net income curve would be misleading because of tax noise.

Facts: The balance sheet is not aggressive. In FY2026 Q2, total assets were $25.679 billion and total liabilities were $12.297 billion. Cash was $1.110 billion, and total debt was about $5.655 billion. Accounts receivable rose from $3.055 billion in FY2024 to $3.403 billion in FY2025, and was $3.454 billion in Q2 FY2026. Inventory rose from $2.517 billion in FY2024 to $2.699 billion in FY2025, and to $2.995 billion by Q2 FY2026. Accounts payable rose correspondingly from $1.728 billion in FY2024 to $2.021 billion in FY2025, and was $2.224 billion in Q2 FY2026. These changes match business growth and acquisition consolidation, and I do not currently see obvious signs of abnormal cash-flow squeeze.

View: I do not see obvious financial fraud or aggressive accounting signals. What I see is more tax accounting noise and goodwill/intangible asset increases caused by acquisition accounting. The real issues to track are not whether a sudden blow-up is coming, but whether growth will require more working capital and whether post-Richards ROIC will be diluted.

Owner Earnings Estimate

Definition choice. The classic Buffett-style Owner Earnings formula is: net income + non-cash charges - maintenance capital expenditure - working capital increases required to maintain operations. The problem is that outside investors usually cannot precisely know maintenance capital expenditure. For TEL, that number is unknown in public filings, and the company does not disclose it separately.

My conservative approach. Facts: TEL's TTM operating cash flow is about $4.420 billion, capital expenditure is about $1.029 billion, and standard free cash flow is about $3.391 billion.

Assumption: Because exact maintenance capex is unknown, I treat all capex as maintenance capex and do not classify any portion as "growth capex that can be safely added back." This is a conservative approach. It understates true Owner Earnings rather than overstating them. On this basis, I treat $3.39 billion as TEL's current conservative lower bound for Owner Earnings.

Additional inference: If we further consider that the company is a growing industrial platform and that management has long emphasized 100%+ FCF conversion, then all capex is unlikely to be merely for "standing still." Therefore, true Owner Earnings are likely slightly above standard FCF. In this report, however, I do not include that potential upward adjustment in the main valuation and remain conservative.

Conclusion. Using a conservative Owner Earnings range of $3.3 billion to $3.4 billion, the current price implies an Owner Earnings multiple of about 18x-19x, or an Owner Earnings yield of about 5.2%-5.6%. This yield is not low in isolation, but compared with today's 10-year Treasury yield of about 4.50% and AAA corporate bond yield of about 5.56%, the excess return is not dramatic. To justify buying, one must rely on continued future growth and buybacks.

Intrinsic Value, Valuation, and Margin of Safety

Current Valuation Snapshot

Facts: As of May 26, 2026, TEL's share price was about $208.60. On the current basis, its P/E is about 21.3x, P/FCF about 18.0x, EV/EBITDA about 13.9x, ROIC about 14.6%, and net debt/EBITDA about 1.0x. This is not the valuation of a cheap industrial stock. It is an upper-mid-range price the market is willing to pay for an industrial technology leader with medium-to-high quality and growth optionality.

Owner Earnings Discount Method

Model inputs. I use the conservative Owner Earnings figure of $3.3 billion discussed above as the base, instead of management's "best-year" framing. The discount rate is anchored to the current 4.50% 10-year Treasury yield and AAA corporate bond yield of around 5.56%, then adds a long-term equity risk premium to set three scenarios. The following are model assumptions, not facts.

Model interpretation. View: The result suggests that TEL's current share price of $208.60 sits roughly above conservative value and below fair value. In other words, the market has already partly paid for many years of growth and capital-efficiency improvement, but the valuation is not yet extreme. For investors willing to buy a good company that is not cheap but also not absurdly expensive, this price is not impossible to accept. For conservative value investors who emphasize margin of safety, it is still not comfortable enough.

Interpretation. Facts: TEL is clearly much cheaper than APH, but also clearly somewhat more expensive than APTV and ST. At the same time, its ROIC, leverage, and cash-flow quality are clearly better than APTV/ST, while weaker than APH.

View: This neatly explains why TEL's current valuation is mid-range and reasonably matched. Compare it with APH and TEL still looks valuable. Compare it with cheaper but lower-quality APTV/ST and it no longer looks cheap. Therefore, TEL's relative valuation conclusion is not "undervalued," but quality and price are broadly aligned.

Asset Value and Liquidation Value Method

Facts: In FY2026 Q2, TEL had total assets of about $25.679 billion, total liabilities of about $12.297 billion, and common shareholders' equity of about $13.234 billion. However, goodwill was about $7.437 billion, and other intangible assets were about $2.145 billion. In other words, goodwill and intangible assets totaled about $9.58 billion, a meaningful share of total assets. On StockAnalysis' current basis, tangible book value is about $3.652 billion.

Inference: This means TEL is not an asset-discount stock. Viewed through a liquidation lens, it does not have an especially thick hard-asset safety cushion. Its value mainly comes from future earning power, not book net assets. Therefore, the proper way to value TEL is to use an earnings-based approach as the primary method and relative valuation as a supplement, rather than hoping liquidation value provides downside support.

Value Ranges and Buy/Sell Zones

Based on the three methods above, I give the following ranges:

  • Conservative intrinsic value range: $175-$195 per share

  • Fair intrinsic value range: $220-$255 per share

  • Optimistic intrinsic value range: $300-$340 per share

Current price versus intrinsic value. At $208.60, TEL is slightly above the conservative value range and at a small discount to the fair value range. This is the kind of position that can easily trigger the mistake of "it does not look very expensive, so buy quickly." But that is not the same as having a sufficient margin of safety.

My price discipline.

  • Ideal buy price range: $165-$185 per share

  • Acceptable hold price range: $185-$230 per share

  • Clearly overvalued price range: above $260 per share

View: These prices are not short-term trading calls. They are capital allocation discipline. For conservative investors, the most fragile assumption is whether high Industrial growth and high margins can persist for many years. If that assumption is downgraded, the valuation's room for error shrinks quickly.

Margin of Safety

Facts: TEL's current conservative Owner Earnings yield is only about 5.2%-5.6%, which does not create a large static spread over the 10-year Treasury yield of 4.50% or the AAA corporate bond yield of 5.56%. In other words, if you do not believe TEL can keep growing, keep buying back shares, and maintain solid returns on capital for many years, today's price is not obviously more attractive than high-grade bonds.

Inference: If future growth falls short, for example if the long-term rate is only 3%-4% and the market compresses the multiple to around 16x Owner Earnings, the long-term return from buying today would fall into the low-to-mid single digits. If that is combined with weaker automotive conditions, a pullback in high-growth industrial areas, and weaker-than-expected acquisition synergies, permanent capital loss over several years is possible.

Conclusion: At the current price, TEL looks more like a good company at an ordinary price. Margin of safety conclusion: insufficient. For balanced but conservative long-term investors, I would rather wait for a better price than relax valuation discipline simply because the company is excellent.

Risks, Comparisons, Checklist, and Final Conclusion

Important Risks and the Strongest Bear Case

Competitive risk. The connector and sensor industry is not monopolistic. TE itself lists a long set of strong competitors in its annual report and explicitly states that competition is based on price, quality, delivery, and service, while the industry has long-term downward pricing pressure. If competition intensifies or customers push pricing harder than expected, TEL's margin thesis would be damaged first.

Technology substitution and product mix risk. Connection will not disappear, but connection architectures will change. High-speed optical interconnect, architecture upgrades, changes in automotive electrical and electronic architecture, and shifts in server and grid solutions can all erode the advantages of some existing designs. TE is of course investing actively in next-generation architectures, but participating in the next generation does not guarantee winning the next generation.

Cyclical risk. Transportation is still the largest revenue contributor, and automotive accounts for 75% of that segment. If global auto production, commercial vehicle demand, or industrial capital spending declines, TEL will not be untouched. FY2023 already proved that although it can remain profitable and generate FCF, margins can pull back.

Financial and acquisition risk. The Richards acquisition raised energy growth exposure, but also increased goodwill and debt. If integration is poor, synergies fall short, or energy demand weakens, shareholders may receive a heavier asset burden and lower returns. Given the large goodwill balance, impairment is possible under extreme conditions.

FX, tax, and accounting noise risk. The company's annual report discloses that about 60% of FY2025 sales were denominated in currencies other than the U.S. dollar, and the company does not hedge this translation risk. On taxes, FY2024 and FY2025 net income were both materially affected by tax items. In other words, TEL's accounting earnings do not always smoothly reflect operating trends.

Supply chain, raw materials, and tariff risk. TE faces fluctuations in copper, precious metals, transportation, and geopolitical costs, and it discusses tariffs and trade uncertainty explicitly. The company can raise prices in part, but full pass-through is not guaranteed.

The strongest bear case. If I were short, I would say: "TEL is certainly a good company, but it is not as strong as APH. Yet the share price is already above a traditional industrial valuation. Much of the 2026 high Industrial growth comes from a surge in AI data center and energy capex, and these orders are inherently volatile. Meanwhile, automotive exposure remains high, and acquisitions have added more goodwill and debt. Investors buying today may be buying a decent business, but the price already reflects too much imagination about 'structural high growth.' Once growth normalizes, returns could be ordinary."

Facts That Would Overturn the Investment Judgment

If the following signals appear, I would upgrade the current judgment of "good business, ordinary price" to clearly wrong, or at least rebuild the model:

  • Growth in digital data networks and energy slows materially and persistently, and shifts from "structural" to a one-time spike, especially if order/revenue growth steps down significantly for several consecutive quarters.

  • Operating margin stays below 16% for a long period, reflecting competitive deterioration or product mix deterioration, rather than a short cyclical fluctuation. The FY2021-FY2025 range suggests that around 16% is roughly the lower bound of historical operating resilience.

  • Free cash flow conversion weakens materially, for example if FCF remains well below net income or below 80% of normalized net income for multiple years.

  • Net debt/EBITDA clearly moves above 2x, especially if driven by low-return acquisitions rather than high-quality expansion.

  • Major goodwill impairment, quality incidents, loss of design-in on key customer platforms, or a sudden material increase in customer concentration. The current lack of significant single-customer exposure is an advantage that must not be lost.

Comparison With Other Opportunities

Compared with the strongest peer. If comparing only business quality, I would place Amphenol above TEL: APH currently has higher ROIC, a better historical return profile, and the market's willingness to pay a higher multiple has a rationale. But APH's current P/FCF of about 37x and EV/EBITDA of about 22.8x are materially above TEL's. In other words, APH may be the better company, and TEL may be the better price, but TEL is still far from cheap.

Compared with the index. Current valuation measures for the S&P 500 are not uniform. Based on Reuters reporting on forward valuation, the S&P 500 P/E is around 21.5x. Under YCharts' forward P/E basis, it is about 23.6x. Under Multpl's trailing P/E, the figure is even above 30x. Whichever basis is used, TEL's current valuation of about 21x is not obviously cheap versus the index. Its advantage over the index is that you are buying a real industrial company with manufacturing strength and improving cash flow. Its disadvantage is that you give up the index's high diversification.

Compared with risk-free/high-grade bonds. The current 10-year Treasury yield is about 4.50%, and AAA corporate bond yield is about 5.56%. TEL's appeal does not come from a current yield that crushes bonds. It comes from the possibility that Owner Earnings continue to grow and that dividends and buybacks increase intrinsic value per share. The issue is that this excess return takes time to realize and requires continued business execution. For conservative investors, the extra return at today's price is not overwhelming.

Conclusion.

  • Is buying TEL clearly better than buying the index? At this point, not clearly.

  • Is expected return enough to compensate for risk? It can compensate, but the margin is ordinary.

    Bottom line: TEL has a high ceiling, but its growth is mainly about making an existing large pie thicker and larger, rather than creating a new market from nothing. Baillie Gifford's LTGG framework most prefers the latter: opening up new demand and redefining an industry disruptively. By that yardstick, TEL is a case of capturing more content in a mature market undergoing structural upgrading. That deserves respect, but it is not a textbook case of creating a new world.

    The pie itself is clearly large enough. At its 2025 investor day, management framed the serviceable market for connectivity-related areas at about $130 billion, while the annual-report framing implies a combined market of about $200 billion across the two major segments. The report is honest, however, that this is the company's internal TAM, not an independently audited third-party market-share report, so it cannot be treated directly as an objective ceiling. TEL's own FY2025 revenue was about $17.26 billion. Even against the company's most conservative $130 billion framing, penetration is only about 13%, leaving several times of nominal room.

    But a large market does not mean one company can monopolize it. This is an oligopolistic field with multiple strong players. The annual report directly names a long list of competitors, including Yazaki, Aptiv, Sumitomo, Sensata, Honeywell, Molex, Amphenol, Hubbell, and Omron. Nobody takes all. TEL's ceiling is therefore about taking a few more slices in a large pie everyone is fighting over through engineering and manufacturing capability, not owning a new world by itself.

    What truly resembles the logic of expanding an existing pie is the rise in content per unit, rather than the creation of a market from thin air. Vehicle electrification and intelligence increase connector and sensor content per car; AI data centers increase the value of high-speed interconnects per rack. Management has explicitly disclosed that its AI-related content per chip path is moving from about $500 million in 2023 toward more than $3 billion (Q2 FY2026 results and earnings-call framing). Connectors and sensors as existing categories have not been reinvented, but each chip and each vehicle now carries more of them. That is the precise picture of enlarging an existing pie.

    The only part with some new-market flavor is the high-speed interconnect business serving hyperscale data centers within Digital Data Networks, or DDN. It was still small a few years ago and has now been matured by AI capex into a new growth pole (DDN was up about +70% YoY to about $707 million). Even so, TEL is one of the picks-and-shovels suppliers in that field, not the party defining demand. Compute vendors such as Nvidia define that demand.

    In one sentence: the height of the ceiling is good enough for a watchlist, but the nature of the growth is stock-market expansion driven by penetration and content, not new-market creation. Under Baillie Gifford's highest standard, this deserves only a slightly positive neutral score, not an upgrade.

    Bottom line: revenue at least doubling over the next five years is almost unrealistic. This is one of TEL's hardest weaknesses under the Baillie Gifford framework. Management's own public through-cycle target is only 6%–8% revenue growth, which compounds to about 34%–47% over five years, far short of +100%. Growth is mainly volume-driven, through shipment volume in high-growth subindustries and higher content per unit. Price is secondary and constrained by industry deflationary pressure. New businesses, mainly through acquisitions, can accelerate growth but cannot close the doubling gap.

    Start with the baseline pace. At its 2025 investor day, management set a long-term framework of 6%–8% through-cycle revenue growth, together with margin expansion. FY2025 revenue was about $17.26 billion, up +9% YoY, with organic growth of +6%. Over a longer period, the pace was slower: on the report's basis, FY2021 to FY2025 revenue CAGR was only about 3.7%. Doubling in five years would require sustained compound growth of about 15% per year, twice the upper end of management's target and four times the historical midpoint. There is little realistic support for that.

    Volume is the main engine, and it is indeed strong today. In the latest quarter, Q2 FY2026 total revenue was $4.74 billion, up +15% reported / +7% organic. The pull came almost entirely from industrial volume: the Industrial segment grew +16.9% organically, with DDN serving AI data centers up about +70% YoY to about $707 million. But during the same period, the Transportation segment was -0.5% organic. The largest segment, over half of revenue, had almost no organic growth, directly diluting Industrial's double-digit growth back to single digits at the company level. That is the structural barrier to doubling: the high-growth portion still has a smaller base, while the low-growth Transportation base is large.

    Price contributes only modestly. The annual report states plainly that the industry faces long-term price-down pressure. The company is merely seeking price recovery in some businesses because costs and tariffs have risen. This is not consumer-style pricing freedom. Price is more about protecting gross margin than driving a revenue doubling.

    New businesses through acquisitions can accelerate growth, but the scale is not enough. In FY2025, the acquisition of Richards Manufacturing contributed only about $179 million of revenue in that year, less than 1.1% of total revenue. By the first half of FY2026, acquisition contribution in Energy was about $271 million. The direction is right and the additions help, but against a revenue base of more than $17 billion, building a doubling case through bolt-on acquisitions would require a chain of multibillion-dollar deals. The pace of about $2.6 billion of acquisition spending in FY2025, together with the company's leverage discipline, does not support such aggressive expansion.

    Honest conclusion: doubling in five years is not a reasonable expectation. Mid- to high-single-digit growth is. On this question, TEL fails Baillie Gifford's standard. It is a steady compounder among industrial leaders, not a revenue catapult. Treating it as a five-year-doubling growth stock would seriously overstate the upside.

    Bottom line: TEL's second curve does exist today and is already scaling: high-speed interconnects for AI data centers in Industrial, namely Digital Data Networks or DDN, plus grid and energy modernization. These are not long-dated PPT concepts. They are real engines already visible in orders and revenue. The question is not whether they exist, but whether they can become a structural handoff or whether they are a cyclical spike from this round of high capex. That is the largest uncertainty repeatedly emphasized in the report.

    The second curve is already visible and tangible. In the latest quarter, the Industrial segment grew +16.9% organically. DDN, which serves hyperscale data centers, grew about +70% YoY, with revenue of about $707 million, roughly one-third of the Industrial segment (Q2 FY2026 results basis). Energy was lifted by both grid upgrades and the Richards acquisition. The report discloses that Energy increased by about $356 million YoY in the first half of FY2026, with about $271 million from acquisitions. Orders are more forward-looking: Q2 record orders reached $5.3 billion, up +25%, with Industrial orders up +40%. Orders lead revenue, showing this curve is still accelerating rather than peaking.

    The forward elasticity has also been quantified. Management disclosed that its AI-related content per chip path is moving from about $500 million in 2023 toward more than $3 billion, and raised its FY2026 AI-related revenue expectation (earnings-call framing, with the incremental contribution mainly in the second half). It also lifted capex to about 6% of revenue to support DDN's dedicated AI capacity ramp. That signals real capacity investment for the second curve, not slogan-making.

    But under Baillie Gifford's standard, two hurdles prevent a high score for this second curve:

    First, sustainability is uncertain. AI data center and energy capex are themselves volatile, project-based demand pools. The report lists whether this can last for years rather than merely represent a phase of order peaks as the top uncertainty. In today's double-digit organic growth, how much is structural and permanent content uplift, and how much is a pulse from this capex supercycle, cannot yet be falsified.

    Second, the old main curve, Transportation, is stalling. Transportation, over half of revenue, was -0.5% organic this quarter, effectively flat. The second curve is impressive in growth rate, but because its base is still smaller than Transportation, it needs to keep scaling and withstand a future normalization of AI capex before it can truly take over as the dominant company-wide growth driver and push the whole company back to sustained double-digit growth.

    Honest conclusion: the second curve is real and already contributing growth, which is a positive for TEL on this question. But whether it is a structural handoff or a cyclical pulse has not yet been proven by time. The score can therefore only be slightly positive neutral: better than having no second curve, but still short of the clear, visible, and sustainable next-generation main engine Baillie Gifford wants.

This is not a Coca-Cola-style brand moat or a platform network effect, but in the world of industrial connectivity it is solid enough.

    The moat is really made of system capabilities that are difficult to replicate quickly. The report breaks this down clearly: scale, with about 93,000 employees, sales in about 130 countries, 120 plants, and 10,000 engineers, is strong; switching costs, through design-in, joint development, and embedding in customer road maps, and cost advantage, through global manufacturing layout, procurement, and yield, are moderately strong; culture and operating capability, through engineering plus manufacturing systems, are strong.
