Management and Capital Allocation

The conclusion from these numbers is quite clear. First, **revenue growth is fast: **revenue grew 21% year over year in 2024 and a further 52% year over year in 2025, including 38% organic growth in 2025; Q1 2026 revenue rose another 58% year over year, with 33% organic growth. Second, **margins are rising: **from 2023 to 2025, gross margin increased from 32.5% to 36.9%, and operating margin rose from 20.4% to 25.4%, showing that the company is not expanding crudely. Third, **cash flow quality is very high: **cumulative net income attributable to the parent over 2023-2025 was about $8.62 billion, while cumulative free cash flow was about $8.71 billion, meaning accounting profit and cash profit broadly matched.

The balance sheet also deserves close attention. At the end of March 2026, the company had total debt of $18.749 billion, and cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments totaling $4.583 billion. My interpretation is: Amphenol is not a poor business that runs out of cash whenever it grows, but neither is it a zero-working-capital cash machine.

On ROE, ROA, and ROIC, precise rolling figures vary slightly by data platform methodology. As third-party references, StockAnalysis currently shows Amphenol at about ROE 32.6%, ROA 12.2%, and ROIC 19.1%. I do not treat these third-party numbers as the core basis for decision-making, but they are consistent with the company's profile of high margins, light-to-medium capital intensity, and strong cash flow.

Are there signs of financial fraud or aggressive accounting? I currently do not see direct evidence. But two points must be flagged. First, Amphenol makes frequent acquisitions, and non-GAAP metrics often exclude inventory step-up amortization, acquired backlog amortization, and transaction expenses; Q1 2026 adjusted EPS was $1.06, while GAAP EPS was only $0.72, a meaningful gap. Second, taxes can be affected by excess tax benefits from option exercises and matters such as the China tax dispute. In other words, the issue is not suspicious accounting, but the need to keep looking at GAAP, cash flow, and share count, rather than only adjusted EPS.

Owner Earnings Estimate

Buffett-style analysis cares more about "owner earnings" than attractive quarterly EPS. Here I provide a somewhat conservative estimate framework.

【Fact】TTM net income attributable to the parent was about $4.466 billion; TTM depreciation and amortization was about $1.172 billion; TTM operating cash flow was about $5.731 billion; TTM net capital expenditure was about $1.084 billion; TTM free cash flow was about $4.644 billion.

【Assumption】Maintenance capex is the hardest item to confirm precisely. The company does not provide an official definition, and 2025-2026 capital expenditures are affected by AI/datacom demand and acquisition expansion, clearly higher than in earlier years. I therefore use a conservative but not overly pessimistic assumption: maintenance capex of about $650 million per year, higher than the actual 2023 level but lower than current total capex; I also assume that under normal growth, annual incremental working capital use is about $250 million. I also treat stock-based compensation as a real economic cost, so I do not add back SBC. This makes the valuation more conservative than common Wall Street approaches.

Under this approach, conservative Owner Earnings ≈ 4.466 + 1.172 - 0.65 - 0.25 = $4.74 billion, or about $3.67 per share. At the current share price of $148.4, this is roughly 40x owner earnings. If you set maintenance capex lower and treat working capital use more lightly, Owner Earnings may rise to $4.9 billion to $5.0 billion; if you are more conservative, it may fall to around $4.5 billion. But across any reasonable range, the stock is not cheap today.

My conclusion is: Amphenol's true earning power is strong, and free cash flow has long been close to or slightly above net income; but the current valuation's owner earnings multiple is indeed high. This is a classic case where "quality is very good" and "price is not low" are both true.

Valuation and Margin of Safety

The market currently prices Amphenol as one of the core high-quality beneficiaries of AI connectivity infrastructure. This logic is not baseless: IT/datacom accounted for 36% of company sales in 2025, 2025 organic growth reached 38%, 2026Q1 still had 33% organic growth, and book-to-bill reached 1.24. The question is whether the good logic has already been paid for too fully.

At the latest market price, Amphenol trades at roughly 40.9x PE. Using company-disclosed figures and rolling calculations, it is roughly equivalent to around 41x P/FCF and about 26x EV/EBITDA; using standardized third-party database methodologies, Yahoo shows APH's EV/EBITDA at about 24.4x, StockAnalysis shows EV/FCF at about 42.5x, while TE Connectivity is roughly around 14x and 20x, respectively. In other words, Amphenol is not just slightly more expensive than the strongest listed peer. It is meaningfully more expensive.

At the same time, comparison with alternatives also does not support "buy today." The S&P 500's current trailing PE is about 32.8x, implying an earnings yield a little above 3%; the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is about 4.46%. Amphenol's current earnings yield is only about 2.45%, and its FCF yield is also only around 2.5%. This does not mean Amphenol's future return will necessarily be worse, but it does mean: most of the return for new buyers can no longer rely on current cash flow yield, and must instead rely on many years of future growth and sustained high valuation. That is not comfortable enough for conservative investors.

Intrinsic Value Estimate

Below are three methods.

Owner earnings discounted cash flow. I use the owner earnings framework above for a three-scenario DCF, intentionally setting assumptions somewhat conservatively. The result is not a "true value," but a reasonable range.

Given model error and uncertainty around acquisition integration, I do not treat the point estimates above as buy/sell lines. I translate them into more practical ranges: conservative intrinsic value $65-$80; reasonable intrinsic value $90-$115; optimistic intrinsic value $130-$150. The current $148.4 price is close to, or even slightly above, the upper end of my "optimistic scenario." The key 【Assumption】 here is not whether the company will keep growing. It probably will. The key question is whether the market will still give it a very high valuation multiple ten years from now, while growth and margins also avoid a meaningful step-down.

Relative valuation. Compared with TE Connectivity, Amphenol is significantly more expensive; compared with the S&P 500, it is also clearly not cheap. Being expensive is not an error if it can keep delivering higher ROIC, faster growth, and stronger cash conversion than peers and the index over the long term. Historical data show that Amphenol has indeed delivered a meaningful part of that. But at the current price, you are effectively paying a large "prepayment for excellent future execution" in advance. For a 10-year holder, this is not unacceptable, but it must be understood clearly: the margin for error in future returns has narrowed.

Asset/liquidation value. This company is not suitable for supporting a buy decision with a liquidation approach. At the end of March 2026, the company had total assets of $42.134 billion and total liabilities of $28.042 billion, implying book shareholders' equity of about $14.08 billion. But this included goodwill of $17.543 billion and intangible assets of $5.401 billion, totaling $22.9 billion, more than book equity. This means that on a rough basis, tangible net assets are negative. Therefore, Amphenol's value comes almost entirely from future earning power, not an asset safety cushion. For value investors, this is not unacceptable, but it does mean that the margin of safety must come from price, not liquidation value.

Management consistently executes “flexible and balanced capital allocation”: reinvestment + disciplined M&A + dividends + buybacks. It returned nearly $1.5 billion to shareholders in 2025 and raised the quarterly dividend by 52% in one move in October 2025 ($0.165→$0.25); in 2026Q1, it repurchased about $178 million of stock and paid $307 million of dividends. The leaders have long tenure, but they are professional managers: Loeffler has been at Amphenol for more than five decades, has been chairman since 1997, and will retire in May 2026; CEO Norwitt will become chairman at the same time (Norwitt has been CEO since 2009). The CEO does have a meaningful absolute-dollar stake: the proxy statement discloses about 2.8 million shares of actual ownership (about $390 million at $138.81) plus exercisable options.     For a manufactured-components company, 37% gross margin, 25% operating margin, and nearly 20% ROIC are already very strong. The story is clearly laid out in every sell-side report: global connector/interconnect systems leader + core beneficiary of AI data centers (the report’s definition has IT/datacom at 36% of 2025 sales), plus a 10-year sales/EPS CAGR of 15%/19% and ROIC of 19%. This is an open card that everyone can understand. There is no information barrier and no obscure-stock recognition gap.

    Dismissed? The opposite: it is highly prized. The current price implies about 40x PE (39.93x) and about 26x EV/EBITDA, nearly double the multiple of the strongest peer, TE Connectivity (about 14x). The market is valuing it as “the leader among leaders,” not applying a neglected discount. Current coverage by 18 sell-side analysts, consensus Buy, 0 Sells, and a median target price of about $180 is about 20% above the report’s most optimistic intrinsic-value upper bound of $150.
