Viewed through the lens of "owning a business for ten years or more, the way you would if you had bought the whole company," Samsung Electronics is a business I can understand but would not classify as high-certainty: it owns world-class semiconductor, display, smartphone, TV, and automotive-electronics assets, carries an extremely strong balance sheet, and still ranks at the front of several key arenas. Yet its profit center is deeply shaped by the memory cycle, technology transitions, capital-expenditure intensity, and the competitive landscape, and its business quality is not the steady, consumer-staple kind you get with Coca-Cola. In 2025 the company set a record-high revenue of KRW 333.6 trillion, and in Q1 2026 it again posted a record single-quarter revenue of KRW 133.9 trillion and operating profit of KRW 57.2 trillion, showing just how strong the AI-driven memory upcycle has been; the catch is that this level of profit very likely embeds a substantial cyclical dividend. At the May 21, 2026 closing price of KRW 299,500 and a market cap of about KRW 1,905.8 trillion, the market has already priced in much of this upcycle.
Is there a margin of safety at the current price: not obvious
If you look at current or expected one-year earnings, Samsung does not look expensive; but if you look at mid-cycle free cash flow and owner earnings, the current price is not conservative. More importantly, Samsung's trailing earnings yield is roughly in line with the yield on the 10-year Korean government bond, while Samsung's operating volatility, technology-execution risk, and capital-expenditure pressure are plainly higher than a government bond's, which means the risk compensation is inadequate.
The type of investor this suits: it is better suited to long-term value investors / cycle investors who can tolerate industry cycles and are willing to track semiconductor supply-demand and technology roadmaps over the long run; it is less suitable for an ordinary conservative investor to buy heavily as a new position at the current price.
The biggest uncertainties: First, how long the high-flying AI-memory upcycle can last; second, whether Samsung can genuinely narrow the quality gap with SK hynix and TSMC in HBM and advanced foundry; and third, whether, after these high profits are realized, capital allocation can keep centering on per-share intrinsic value rather than scale expansion.

How This Company Actually Makes Money
Fact. Samsung Electronics was founded in 1969 and listed on the Korean exchange in 1975. The company is currently organized into four major businesses: DX (digital TVs, refrigerators, smartphones, network equipment, and the like), DS (memory, foundry, System LSI), SDC (display panels), and Harman (connected cars, audio-visual, enterprise automation, and connectivity services). Its financial statements state explicitly that revenue "comes primarily from product sales," and for accounting purposes it is mostly recognized when control of the goods transfers.

Inference. From a long-term business owner's perspective, this business is not mysterious: it makes money by developing, manufacturing, and selling high-tech hardware and core components, with customers including global consumers, phone/PC/server OEMs, cloud and data-center clients, automakers, and distribution channels. The hard part is the instability of the profit drivers, not any trouble understanding the products: memory prices, advanced-process yields, flagship-phone sales, panel ASPs, exchange rates, and the cadence of capital spending can all materially change annual earnings.
Revenue Quality, Cost Structure, and Dependencies
Samsung's revenue is not highly recurring subscription revenue. Phones, home appliances, TVs, and panels are more transactional and driven by new-product cycles and consumer spending; memory and foundry are driven more by industry supply-demand and generational technology transitions. The upside is an enormous addressable market; the downside is that revenue predictability is weaker than in software, payments, consumer staples, or utilities. Within semiconductors, memory is a classic highly concentrated, strongly cyclical industry, significantly exposed to generational technology shifts and supply-demand shocks; foundry is an industry with extremely high technology barriers, enormous capital expenditure, and highly concentrated share; smartphones and TVs have matured, relying more on brand, channels, and product mix than on high growth across the whole market. In 2025 the global smartphone market grew only about 2%, with Apple leading at a 20% share and Samsung close behind at 19%—evidence that phones are no longer a high-growth industry but a mature, competitive market.
Samsung still carries considerable weight across several sub-industries, but the nature of its "strength" differs. According to TrendForce, Samsung held roughly 36% of DRAM revenue share in Q4 2025, reclaiming the top spot; about 28% of NAND share in Q4 2025, still No. 1; and about 7.1% of the pure-play foundry market in Q4 2025, second place but far behind the leader. Inference. Samsung's moat is not "a single wide moat" but "a combination of multiple moderate moats": brand, scale, manufacturing capability, capital intensity, and industrial position together form the barrier. The problem is that this moat performs differently across businesses: TVs and phones are more easily caught up with, foundry is clearly weaker than TSMC, and in HBM it has been beaten to the punch by SK hynix; the truly hardest moats still lie in memory scale, display manufacturing, and whole-supply-chain resource orchestration. So I regard its moat as stable overall, narrowing in pockets, rather than continuously and clearly widening.
In an inflationary environment, Samsung can partly raise prices on premium phones, TVs, and certain B2B components, but on commodity memory its pricing is still fundamentally set by industry supply-demand. In a downturn, the company can generally stay alive and remain somewhat profitable, but high profitability is not guaranteed; the full-year 2023 operating profit of just KRW 6.57 trillion is the most direct evidence. Can Management Be Trusted
Start with the positives. The corporate-governance pages show that independent directors form a majority of the board; the official board page states the board comprises three executive directors and five independent directors, with independents in the majority. The audited financials carry an unqualified opinion from the external auditor. Shareholder returns are also fairly institutionalized: for 2024–2026 the company committed total shareholder returns of 50% of free cash flow over the period, holding regular dividends at KRW 9.8 trillion per year.
Now the reservations. Samsung has long carried the typical Korean chaebol governance discount, driven not only by "the presence of a controlling shareholder" but also by the effect of historical legal and governance disputes on minority-shareholder sentiment. In July 2025, Korea's Supreme Court upheld Lee Jae-yong's acquittal on fraud and accounting charges related to the 2015 merger case, removing a major legal overhang; but Reuters also recalled that he had previously served time in another case and was pardoned in 2022. For a value investor, this means governance risk cannot be treated as zero.
Is Capital Allocation Rational
Here I give Samsung a rating of "above average, but short of excellent."
The positive evidence is clear. The company's shareholder-return policy is transparent; even through the major memory downturn of 2021–2023, it still executed about KRW 29.4 trillion in shareholder returns; for 2024–2026 it continues within a 50%-of-FCF framework, maintaining KRW 9.8 trillion in regular annual dividends while retaining the flexibility to return capital ahead of schedule. In 2025 the company also actually bought back a large amount of treasury stock, and in March 2026 it announced the cancellation of about KRW 14.6 trillion of treasury shares to enhance shareholder value.
But "rational" does not mean "perfect." First, Samsung is a manufacturing-based tech company that must keep reinvesting heavily; much of its cash ultimately flows back into fabs, advanced nodes, packaging, display, and new businesses, giving it inherently less capital-allocation freedom than an asset-light platform company. Second, recent M&A is more adjacent expansion than a reshaping of the semiconductor competitive dynamic: increasing its stake in Rainbow Robotics in 2024, and acquiring the German HVAC maker FläktGroup in 2025, are more about robotics, data-center cooling, and building/HVAC positioning; these directions have logic, but proving high returns will take time.

The 2024–2025 audited financial data above come from the audited financial statements; gross margin, operating margin, net margin, and rough free cash flow are calculations based on company-disclosed data.
These numbers say three very important things.
First, profit is not pure accounting profit. In 2025, operating cash flow of KRW 85.3 trillion was clearly higher than net profit of KRW 45.2 trillion, showing that in a recovery phase, profit does convert into cash.
Second, growth requires large capital investment. This company is by no means a "the more it grows, the more it saves" model. In 2025, cash invested in PP&E and intangibles alone exceeded KRW 52 trillion. Samsung can certainly generate cash, but it must also keep plowing large amounts of cash back in to maintain its process technology, capacity, and technological competitiveness.
Third, free cash flow is not smooth. The official shareholder-return page shows that the three-year total free cash flow for 2021–2023 was about KRW 18.8 trillion, while shareholder returns over the same period reached KRW 29.4 trillion. This shows that during the 2023 memory trough, Samsung's cash freedom came under significant pressure; the high profits seen today should not be mistaken for a "naturally stable long-term FCF machine."
Signs of Financial Fraud or Aggressive Accounting
I see no clear red flags at the level of the audit opinion. The 2025 audit report is unqualified. It is worth noting that the auditor listed the timing of transferring large DS construction-in-progress to fixed assets and the accuracy and completeness of sales-promotion deductions as key audit matters; this speaks more to business complexity and the materiality of the amounts than to any direct indication of fraud. On the high-confidence evidence, I see no signal that "financial fraud has been confirmed," but I will keep watching receivables, inventory, sales allowances, and capitalization boundaries.
Owner-Earnings Estimate
Buffett-style "owner earnings" is about answering: how much cash a company can truly distribute to owners without harming its long-term competitiveness.
For Samsung, the most robust starting point is the 2025 audited operating cash flow, together with a conservative estimate of maintenance capital expenditure, rather than simply annualizing Q1 2026 profit.
Fact: Operating cash flow in 2025 was KRW 85.3 trillion; cash outflow for PP&E was KRW 47.5 trillion; purchases of intangible assets were KRW 4.63 trillion. Segment depreciation and amortization together were about KRW 46.9 trillion.
Assumption: I do not treat all KRW 52.2 trillion of total CapEx as "maintenance," because part of it clearly goes toward AI demand, advanced nodes, R&D complexes, and new growth directions; but nor will I be so optimistic as to count only depreciation, because in the memory/foundry/display industries, "the upgrades you are forced to make just to hold your position" are themselves close to maintenance spending. To be conservative, I assume that in 2025 maintenance CapEx is 65%–75% of total CapEx, i.e., about KRW 34–39 trillion. This assumption is a valuation-model assumption, not a company-disclosed fact.
On that basis: Conservative owner earnings for 2025 are roughly KRW 46–51 trillion; in the full-report valuation I take KRW 47 trillion as the mid-cycle starting point. This figure is slightly above reported free cash flow, and more conservative than directly annualizing the outsized Q1 2026 profit.
Inference: At a current market cap of about KRW 1,905.8 trillion, the current price equals about 40x conservative owner earnings; deducting Q1 2026 net cash of about KRW 119.2 trillion, enterprise value corresponds to about 38x conservative owner earnings. This is not a deep-value price.
Valuation, Intrinsic Value, and Margin of Safety
The Current Price and What the Market Is Reflecting
As of May 21, 2026, Samsung Electronics closed at about KRW 299,500, and Google Finance shows a market cap of about KRW 1,905.8 trillion. The visible valuation snapshots on Yahoo Finance/WSJ put trailing P/E in roughly the 22–24x range and forward P/E at about 6.8x. This set of figures itself shows that the market is pricing the company off a profit curve that is "extremely strong now, possibly falling later."
Placing this trailing earnings yield alongside the yield on the 10-year Korean government bond leads to a conclusion that matters a great deal to a conservative investor. The 10-year Korean government bond yield closed at about 4.195% on May 20, 2026, while the 23.8x P/E corresponds to an earnings yield of about 4.2%. In other words, if you buy Samsung on trailing earnings, you get almost no extra risk compensation. The market will of course argue that forward earnings are deeply undervalued, but that argument leans heavily on the AI-memory upcycle continuing at a high level.

The point of this DCF is not precision to the last digit, but transparency of assumptions. As long as you do not treat Q1 2026 profit as a long-term steady state, the current KRW 299,500 sits roughly at the upper edge of the optimistic scenario or above, not in the conservative/neutral range. The valuation above is based on 2025 audited cash flow, Q1 2026 net cash, and the current share price and market cap, with the key assumption that "maintenance CapEx is 65%–75% of total CapEx."
Method 2: Relative Valuation
On the surface-level forward P/E of about 6.8x, Samsung looks very cheap; but that precisely reflects the market treating the current AI-memory windfall as the near-term base. On a trailing P/E of 22–24x, it is not cheap at all. Placed within its industry, the company currently sits in an awkward position: on one hand, it lacks TSMC's structural quality of a runaway lead in advanced foundry—74% of TSMC's 2025 wafer revenue already came from advanced process nodes; on the other, in HBM it still has to keep chasing SK hynix's first-mover advantage. In other words, Samsung's profit volatility is higher than TSMC's, while its technology-execution uncertainty is higher than that of companies the market is willing to award a "stable, high-quality premium." So I will not conclude it is cheap just because the forward P/E is low.
Method 3: Asset Value or Liquidation Value
Samsung is not an asset-liquidation type of investment, but it has very strong balance-sheet support. In Q1 2026, the company's "cash" measure (including cash and cash equivalents, short-term financial instruments, etc.) was KRW 147.4 trillion, with net cash of KRW 119.24 trillion; at the end of 2025, total assets were KRW 566.9 trillion, total liabilities KRW 130.6 trillion, and net assets about KRW 436.3 trillion. This means the company is far from a leverage-fragile entity, and it explains why it can sustain shareholder returns and heavy reinvestment even in an industry trough.
But this equally means that Samsung today is not cheap because "net cash makes up a very high share of its value." At the current market cap, most of what the market pays is for future earning power, not existing net assets or current assets. So this is more like an earnings-based valuation than a discount to book assets.
Margin-of-Safety Judgment
My conclusion is clear: the current margin of safety is inadequate.
The most fragile assumption in the valuation is that "the high profitability of 2026 can be sustained for a long time." If the AI-memory shortage is only a 2–3 year upcycle rather than an 8–10 year new normal, then today's low forward valuation will quickly be distorted. Even if revenue keeps growing, as long as margins pull back, HBM share falls short of expectations, or foundry improvement lags, the current price may only deliver mediocre returns.
The price bands I give are as follows:

This does not mean KRW 299,500 must fall in the short term; it means that at the current price, a new buyer is more like paying for a very strong but not necessarily sustainable earnings peak. For a balanced, conservatively inclined long-term value investor, I would rather wait than chase the price.
Risks, Counterarguments, and Comparison
The Most Important Risks
What most deserves attention is permanent loss of capital, not short-term volatility.
Competition and technology risk. In the HBM arena, SK hynix's first-mover advantage is real; in advanced foundry, TSMC's technology, customer base, and ability to commercialize advanced nodes remain stronger. If Samsung cannot markedly improve foundry yields and external-customer trust over the next 2–3 years, or re-establish an advantage in HBM share, then the market may keep applying a "cyclical discount" to it.
Cycle risk. Memory prices and profits are highly exposed to supply and demand.
