The risks are concentrated in mean reversion. Samsung and Micron are chasing HBM4, and share could fall from 60% back to 50%; 30% to 40% of capacity is in China and caught under U.S.-China controls; a U.S. listing also carries potential dilution of 2%-3%. An ideal purchase range would be ₩400,000—₩600,000; the current price of ₩1,940,000 looks more like paying a premium for the cycle to stay strong. If a cycle reversal comes together with valuation compression, a long-term drawdown of 50%–80% would not be exaggerated — the loss would come from the stock moving back from an "AI scarce asset" to an "excellent cyclical stock".

Core judgment: From the perspective of a long-term business owner, SK hynix is an understandable, technically demanding, but inherently highly cyclical business. It has built a clear lead in high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, the scarcest memory product in the AI era. Its industry position is far stronger than in the past, and its balance sheet improved sharply into a net-cash position from 2025 through Q1 2026. These are real quality improvements. The problem is not whether the company is excellent. The problem is whether the current price still leaves enough room for a new buyer to be wrong. As of the most recently verifiable market data, Yahoo Finance showed the Korean-listed shares closing at roughly ₩1,940,000. Based on about 710 million shares outstanding, that implies a market value of roughly ₩1,377 trillion. The company's IR webpage showed an earlier share price of about ₩1,753,000. Whichever date is used, the share price implies an extremely high market capitalization.

Does the current price offer a margin of safety: no. For conservative value investors with a holding period of more than 10 years, today's price looks more like paying a high price for an exceptionally strong cycle and scarce supply than buying a cyclical company at a discount. Even after acknowledging that SK hynix's products and execution in HBM are better than most competitors', the current price is still closer to "good company + good story + high expectations" than to "good company + good opportunity after a bad price."

Suitable investor type: It is better suited to cyclical growth investors who understand semiconductor cycles and can tolerate high volatility. It is less suitable for ordinary value investors who want to treat it as a "sleep-well-at-night consumer-staples-like compounder."

Biggest uncertainties: First, how long the AI-driven boom in HBM and server DRAM can last. Second, whether HBM leadership can continue to suppress Samsung and Micron over the next several years, rather than proving to be only a temporary window. Third, against the backdrop of large-scale capacity expansion, advanced packaging, EUV equipment purchases, and a potential U.S. listing for financing, how management will balance shareholder returns and capital expenditure.

Business Understanding and Industry Structure

How This Company Makes Money

SK hynix's core business remains straightforward: manufacturing and selling memory semiconductors. The products and solutions listed on the company's website include DRAM, NAND Storage, SSD, MCP, and solutions for AI, servers, mobile, PCs, consumer electronics, and autos. The company also positions itself as having upgraded from a traditional memory supplier to a "Full Stack AI Memory Creator." In plain terms, revenue comes from selling memory chips with different performance, power, and package profiles to system manufacturers, cloud companies, AI accelerator ecosystems, and channel customers.

At the customer level, this is not a consumer-facing brand business. It is an upstream B2B key-component business. Its negotiating counterparts are data-center customers, server manufacturers, phone and PC manufacturers, and AI chip ecosystems. Reuters directly describes the company as an Nvidia supplier. Reuters has also quoted management as saying that 2025 HBM sales were already sold out, and that the company planned to finalize 2026 HBM sales in the first half of 2025 to strengthen revenue stability. TrendForce has also reported that Nvidia may already have contributed 27% of SK hynix's revenue in the first half of 2025. This means the company is now more deeply tied to the AI infrastructure ecosystem, but it also means dependence on a small number of top customers and a few key products has increased.

The revenue model is not complicated: the company ships chips, modules, SSDs, and other products, then recognizes revenue. What long-term investors should watch most closely is not accounting complexity, but an extremely cyclical price discovery mechanism. DRAM and NAND are, in substance, highly commoditized. Only when products move into HBM, advanced packaging, customer qualification, and supply-constrained settings does pricing begin to look more like that of a scarce industrial product than a standardized commodity component. This is why the company could produce a 72% operating margin in Q1 2026, but also generate a full-year operating loss in 2023.

Revenue repeatability and stability were not high in the past, but the structure is improving. One important fact is that management said in March 2025 that 2025 HBM volume had already sold out, and that 2026 volume was also expected to be locked in during the first half of the year. In May 2026, Reuters further reported that large global technology customers had even proposed funding SK hynix production lines and EUV equipment in exchange for longer-term supply guarantees, with discussions including 30% to 40% prepayments, price bands, and other long-term contract structures. This is not utility-like recurring revenue, but it is more stable than the traditional memory industry's past model of relying only on spot prices.

The cost structure is the most important truth about this business: high fixed costs, high capital expenditure, high depreciation, and high process-ramp risk. Reuters reported that the company's 2026 investment would be significantly higher than the ₩30.2 trillion spent in 2025, with a focus on the Yongin cluster, the M15X line, and key equipment. The company also decided in 2026 to invest ₩19 trillion in an advanced packaging plant, and disclosed in March 2026 that it would purchase up to ₩11.95 trillion of EUV equipment from ASML by 2027. This cost structure means profits can explode when the product mix improves and ASP rises sharply. It also means earnings can collapse quickly when the pricing cycle turns.

If the exchange closed for five years, I would be willing to own the business itself, because it is clearly a genuinely scarce part of the AI infrastructure supply chain. But I would not be willing to own the stock without reservation at the current price, because buying the business and buying the price are two different things. Business understandability score: 4/5. The business itself is not complicated. The cycle and pricing are.

Industry Attractiveness and Competitive Position

The memory industry has two sides. On the long-term demand side, memory and storage have penetrated nearly every digital device, while AI servers have turned high-performance DRAM and HBM into a new "compute bottleneck component." This means long-term demand is not the problem. The problem is that once industry supply over-expands, it can destroy the profit pool. SK hynix posted a full-year operating loss of ₩7.73 trillion in 2023, then saw full-year operating profit surge to ₩47.21 trillion in 2025. That swing from deep losses to windfall profits itself shows this is not a "naturally good industry." It is an industry that can temporarily become good through oligopoly discipline plus demand explosion.

The competitive structure remains that of a highly concentrated oligopoly. Morningstar noted that as of 2024, SK hynix's shares in global DRAM and NAND were roughly 33% and 21%, respectively, ranking it among the global top two in both markets. TrendForce data for Q1 2025 showed SK hynix surpassing Samsung in DRAM revenue for the first time to become number one. Counterpoint data for Q3 2025 showed SK hynix ranking first in the DRAM market for three consecutive quarters, with HBM reaching 40% of its DRAM sales. These facts show it is no longer just "the number two player following Samsung." It has entered a new phase of product-level leadership and a higher industry profit pool.

HBM is the most important competitive battleground today. Market-share definitions are not fully consistent here. TrendForce estimated SK hynix's 2025 HBM market share at about 52.3%. Reuters, citing Macquarie research, put its HBM share at about 61%. The methodologies differ, but the conclusion is the same: SK hynix is the HBM market leader. Its lead comes from earlier investment, better progress in advanced packaging and customer qualification, and especially its ties to the Nvidia ecosystem.

Industry attractiveness, however, cannot be judged only by today. Chinese manufacturers are catching up. Reuters reported in May 2026 that Yangtze Memory Technologies had begun IPO tutoring, and that domestic Chinese memory companies were accelerating capacity expansion. Reuters has also reported that U.S. changes to equipment controls for Chinese production lines would affect Samsung's and SK hynix's upgrade paths for their China fabs, which would also change future cost and supply dynamics. Add Samsung and Micron's efforts to catch up in HBM4 and advanced DRAM nodes, and this industry is still difficult to describe as one that can enjoy high profits for a long time without imitation.

My industry judgment is therefore: This is not a "good company in a good industry." It is closer to "an excellent company in what used to be a poor industry, now entering a high-quality window driven by AI." Industry attractiveness score: 3/5. Long-term demand is strong, but earnings stability is structurally inadequate.

The core basis for the table is that the company is globally leading in HBM, with market share clearly above competitors. Customer demand for HBM supply over the next three years already far exceeds its existing capacity. The company is also continuing to invest heavily in advanced packaging, M15X, and the Yongin cluster in 2026, showing that it is trying to turn leadership into capacity and equipment positions that are harder to copy. At the same time, the company is neither a platform nor a consumer brand with pricing premium. Its moat is therefore mainly a "technology-manufacturing-qualification-capital-intensity moat."

This moat is widening locally and stable overall. In HBM, I think the moat is widening. In ordinary DRAM/NAND, I think the moat is only stable, and may even narrow during expansion periods. Competitors need not only time to copy it, but also massive capital and long customer qualification cycles. Reuters has reported that SK hynix has even received proposals from customers willing to directly fund production lines and EUV equipment, proving that "capacity itself is part of the moat."

One counterintuitive point must be emphasized: its high margins are not entirely a structural advantage; they also clearly include cyclical windfall. In Q1 2026, SK hynix reached a 72% operating margin. The same company recorded a full-year operating loss in 2023. This shows the company does not have a moat that delivers steady high margins regardless of the cycle. It has a moat that is extremely strong when the cycle is hot, supply is tight, and the product mix is upgrading. It has some pricing power, but not stable pricing power across the full cycle. It also cannot guarantee sustained profitability in a downturn.

Moat strength score: 3/5. Looking only at the HBM sub-segment, I would give it 4/5. Looking at the whole company, the traditional memory cycle still pulls it back to 3/5.

Management and Capital Allocation

At the management level, current CEO Kwak Noh-Jung joined the company in 1994 and has served as president and CEO since 2022. His career is deeply rooted in semiconductor manufacturing, R&D, and operations, which is a positive for a company where process technology and yield are critical.

On governance, the company discloses that an independent director has served as board chair since 2021, and that board independence and diversity have improved. This suggests the formal governance structure is somewhat better than the traditional impression of Korean industrial groups. The largest shareholder is SK Square, with about a 20.5% stake. But management's personal shareholdings are small. The CEO, for example, holds only 8,434 shares. This means management looks more like professional managers than owner-managers whose financial fate is highly aligned with outside shareholders. From a value investor's perspective, this is not a serious flaw, but it is not strong owner alignment either.

Capital allocation over the past two years deserves an above-average grade. On one hand, the company significantly improved its financial structure from the end of 2024 to Q1 2026. Cash and cash equivalents rose to ₩14.2 trillion at the end of 2024, debt fell to ₩22.7 trillion, and the debt ratio and net debt ratio improved to 31% and 12%, respectively. By Q1 2026, cash had risen to ₩54.3 trillion, interest-bearing debt had fallen to ₩19.3 trillion, and the company had net cash of ₩35 trillion. On the other hand, it implemented a clearer shareholder return policy: a total 2025 dividend of ₩3,000 per share, and a January 2026 announcement to retire about ₩12.2 trillion of treasury shares, equal to about 2.1% of total share capital. This was one of the largest cancellations in its history.

Still, conservative investors need to keep two questions open on capital allocation. First, the company is continuing to expand aggressively in 2026, investing in advanced packaging, the Yongin cluster, and EUV equipment. These investments are necessary from an industrial logic perspective, but they materially increase the bet on future HBM strength. Second, Reuters has reported that the company is studying a U.S. listing, with potential fundraising of about $9.6 billion to $14.4 billion, which has raised dilution concerns among some Korean shareholders. From a shareholder standpoint, if a company already in a net-cash position and generating very strong cash still chooses new equity financing, management must prove clearly that this is not backward capital allocation: raising equity at a high point and repurchasing at a low point.

In summary, my judgment on management is: integrity and execution are broadly credible for now, and capital allocation is improving, but not enough to justify a very high score. Management and capital allocation score: 3/5.

On revenue, the company grew from about ₩43.0 trillion in 2021 to ₩97.1 trillion in 2025, a four-year CAGR of about 22.6%. But this was not smooth growth. Revenue fell sharply in 2023, then rebounded strongly in 2024-2025. In other words, the company can grow, but it is not linear growth.

Profitability has improved violently. The company posted a full-year operating loss and net loss in 2023, recovered to operating profit of ₩23.47 trillion in 2024, then rose further to ₩47.21 trillion in 2025. In Q1 2026 alone, operating profit reached ₩37.61 trillion and the operating margin reached 72%. This shows both the unprecedented strength of HBM and server memory, and why the current margin cannot be treated as a "definitely sustainable normal state."

On cash flow, it is true that "profits are not merely accounting profits." Yahoo Finance showed TTM levered free cash flow of about ₩25.81 trillion. The company's most recent quarterly levered free cash flow was about ₩7.06 trillion. Based on GuruFocus's breakdown from company filings, Q4 2025 operating cash flow was about ₩12.16 trillion, capital expenditure about ₩7.14 trillion, and quarterly free cash flow about ₩5.02 trillion. Looking again at the balance sheet, cash surged to ₩54.3 trillion in Q1 2026, creating net cash of ₩35 trillion. This also shows profits have not mostly remained in receivables or on paper.

But value investors should see the other side: the more this company grows, the less it means it can save money; instead, it needs massive capital investment to maintain its technology and capacity position. Reuters reported that 2026 investment would be significantly higher than the ₩30.2 trillion spent in 2025. There is also a ₩19 trillion packaging-plant investment, ₩11.95 trillion of EUV purchases, and continued investment in the Yongin cluster and M15X. In other words, it can indeed make money, but it is not a "capital-light, high-cash compounding machine." It is more like a "capital-heavy cash machine that appears during periods of extreme high returns."

Financial safety is a clear positive for now. Morningstar's latest normalized financial-strength indicators include a Quick Ratio of about 1.43, a Current Ratio of about 1.92, Interest Coverage of about 44x, and normalized ROIC of about 28.62%. Combined with the company's Q1 net-cash position, short-term solvency and survivability are very strong. The real question is not "can it survive," but "how long can high returns last."

As far as I can see, there are no obvious signs of financial fraud, aggressive accounting, or earnings manipulation. On the contrary, profit, cash, dividends, treasury-share cancellation, and debt reduction are broadly consistent. The real accounting uncertainty is mainly that public external summaries do not fully split "maintenance capex" and "growth capex," so conservative estimates of distributable cash to shareholders must be more cautious than net profit.

Owner Earnings Analysis

Strictly following Buffett's approach, SK hynix's Owner Earnings cannot simply be replaced by net profit. For a memory manufacturer, "large depreciation" does not mean "all that depreciation can be added back for shareholders." Much of the capital expenditure is needed just to maintain node, yield, packaging, and product-mix positions, rather than representing pure new expansion.

Fact level: Full-year 2025 net profit was ₩42.95 trillion. Q1 2026 net profit was ₩40.35 trillion. At the same time, Yahoo Finance showed TTM levered free cash flow of about ₩25.81 trillion, recent-quarter LFCF of about ₩7.06 trillion, and Q4 2025 operating cash flow of about ₩12.16 trillion, with capital expenditure of about ₩7.14 trillion.

Inference level: If almost all net profit at the current AI-cycle peak is treated as "distributable cash," the company's true distributable capacity would be badly overstated. The reason is not mysterious: maintaining leadership in advanced memory requires continuous investment in equipment, packaging, and process upgrades. For this type of company, Owner Earnings should lean closer to free cash flow than to peak net profit.

Therefore, I use a conservative Owner Earnings estimate of about ₩27 trillion per year. This number is not a guess. It is based on three points. First, TTM levered FCF of about ₩25.81 trillion shows that "cash already available to shareholders" is broadly in this range. Second, recent quarterly free cash flow and operating cash flow are extremely strong, showing that current operations are not weak. Third, I do not want to fully capitalize a 72% Q1 2026 operating margin into long-term valuation, so I use a figure only slightly above TTM LFCF, rounded to ₩27 trillion. This approach is clearly more conservative than net profit, close to cash reality, and more consistent with conservative value-investing practice.

Based on the current market capitalization of about ₩1,377 trillion, the current share price is roughly 51x conservative Owner Earnings. Looking directly at TTM levered FCF, P/FCF is about 53x, and the FCF yield is only about 1.9%. This is crucial for balanced but conservative long-term investors: even if the company is good, the current price has already pulled forward a large part of future prosperity.

Conclusion first: I think today's SK hynix is a "high-quality cyclical company," but not a "value stock with an obvious margin of safety."

Owner Earnings Discounting

I use ₩27 trillion of conservative Owner Earnings as the valuation anchor, with conservative, base, and optimistic scenarios. The discount rates are set on the high side because the memory industry is heavily affected by product cycles, geopolitics, customer qualification, and capital expenditure. It should not use the discount rates of consumer-staples or software companies. Net cash of ₩35 trillion from Q1 2026 is added to equity value.

These figures are calculated values under valuation assumptions, not data disclosed by the company. The core logic is simple. The conservative scenario acknowledges that HBM scarcity can continue, but capitalizes only part of cyclical peak profitability. The base scenario recognizes SK hynix's leadership in AI memory and medium-term growth. The optimistic scenario allows it to maintain HBM dominance and high margins for a longer period, but still does not treat a 72% operating margin as a permanent normal state. Based on the verifiable share-price range of ₩1.75m to ₩1.94m in May 2026, the current price represents premiums to the above intrinsic values of roughly 40% to 55%, 158% to 185%, and 404% to 458%, respectively.

Relative Valuation

In relative valuation, the biggest trap today is not simply whether the multiple is high, but that the multiple is absurdly sensitive to "peak earnings." Public market data show SK hynix's current PE roughly around 17x to 18x TTM. Google Finance captured a PE of about 18.37x. At the same time, based on current market value and shareholders' equity of ₩120.52 trillion at the end of 2025, P/B is roughly above 11x. Based on TTM levered FCF of about ₩25.81 trillion, P/FCF is about 53x. In other words, the market is not valuing this company as an "ordinary cyclical stock." It is valuing it as an "AI scarcity asset."

When comparing with competitors, it is important to note that the methodologies are not fully consistent. Morningstar's normalized ROIC figures show SK hynix at about 28.62%, Samsung Electronics at about 10.43%, and Micron at about 35.21%. This shows that in operating quality, SK has become clearly stronger than Samsung and, in some periods, close to or comparable with Micron. But on valuation, Barron's/MarketWatch gave Micron forward PE of about 5.6x to 6.1x in March-April 2026, while Google Finance captured Samsung's PE at about 24x. The conclusion is: SK hynix deserves a premium for operating quality, but at today's price it does not look cheaper than its main comparables.

Asset or Liquidation Value

The asset-value method offers weak support for SK hynix. Shareholders' equity at the end of 2025 was about ₩120.52 trillion. Based on about 710 million shares, book value was only roughly ₩170,000 per share. Even including net cash of about ₩35 trillion in Q1 2026, that equals only about ₩49,000 per share. In other words, what you are buying today is not a "cheap balance sheet," but "excess earnings power under sustained strong conditions over the next several years." If expectations for future earnings decline, the asset-value method offers little buffer for the current price.
