Renishaw is a long-established UK leader in precision measurement. The report's stance is "Watch": this is a high-quality company, but the current price looks expensive, so the suggestion is to keep watching and avoid rushing in.

What does it mainly do? It gives factory machines an "ultra-precise ruler." The measurement probe it invented in 1972 remains the global standard component in this field today, and machine tools, chip fabs, and aircraft manufacturing all depend on it.

Its way of making money is quite interesting. Selling a piece of equipment is only the start: once the equipment is installed in a customer's machine, it will be used for more than a dozen to 20 years. During that period, parts need to be replaced, calibration must be performed, and supporting software has to be purchased. Renishaw keeps a firm lock on this follow-on business, turning one sale into many years of steady revenue. It is also hard for others to take that business away. Engineers are used to its products, and switching to another supplier would require retraining and several weeks of downtime.

So are its earnings solid? This year, for every 100 pounds of goods it sells, it earns about 16 pounds of profit. Management wants to push that figure to 20 pounds, but the report worries that this step will not be completed that quickly. Then there is the price: the share price has risen by almost half over several months and is now at 5,145 pence. Based on its current earnings, buying the whole company would take about 37 years to pay back. Even using the market's expected earnings for next year, it would still take 32 years. The report calculates that a reasonable buying price would be roughly below GBP 42 (4,200 pence), about 18% below the current price. It therefore believes the current price is already expensive and still carries risks: if margins fail to improve, or if chip and defense orders cool by 2027, the share price could fall significantly. It recommends patience and considering phased purchases only after the price comes down.
