Apple has made clear that it is gradually developing its own baseband chips, and Xiaomi will launch an in-house flagship in 2026. The smartphone-side moat is facing structural pressure.

The biggest risk is that key QTL license agreements enter concentrated renewal in 2027-2031, alongside cyclical pressure from an 8% year-on-year decline in global smartphone SoC shipments in Q1 2026 and the execution risk around 2.215 billion USD of goodwill from the 2.3 billion USD Alphawave acquisition. If renewals stumble while the smartphone business loses share, fair value could be revised down to 110-140 USD, implying a permanent capital loss of about 40%-55%. The ideal buying range is 150-180 USD. At the current price, it is more appropriate to wait for a better price, rather than abandon price discipline because the company is excellent.

Qualcomm is a company whose business I can broadly understand and that is, overall, a good business. One foot stands on a high-barrier system of wireless standard-essential patents and licensing; the other stands on an asset-light, R&D-driven chip design platform. In fiscal 2025, Qualcomm generated $44.284 billion in total revenue, including $38.367 billion from the QCT chip business and $5.582 billion from the QTL licensing business. QTL's pretax margin remained as high as 72%, which shows that the patent-licensing cash cow still exists. At the same time, QCT's revenue mix is gradually expanding from a handset-only engine into automotive, IoT, PCs, and data centers. But as of fiscal Q2 2026, handsets remained the largest revenue source, with QCT handset revenue still at $6.024 billion for the quarter.

From the perspective of a long-term business owner rather than a trader, the issue is not the business itself, but the price and the assumptions required to justify it. Around May 22, 2026, QCOM's public market quote was about $238.16. Based on my conservative Owner Earnings estimate using the latest reported financials, Qualcomm is currently trading at roughly around 20x Owner Earnings, which is not obviously cheap. For a company still affected by the handset cycle, customer concentration, Apple in-house modem development, and Chinese OEM self-developed chip trends, this valuation does not offer an obvious margin of safety for a balanced but conservative investor.

Does the current price offer a margin of safety: Not obvious

Best-suited investor type: Long-term value investors who understand the dual engine of semiconductors and patent licensing, and who are willing to track business quality over the long run instead of short-term share price moves. It is less suitable for ordinary conservative investors who only want an extremely simple and extremely stable business.

Biggest uncertainties: First, whether the handset moat will gradually narrow because of Apple in-house modems, Android customers' self-developed SoCs, and changes in the Chinese customer mix. Second, whether the QTL licensing business can maintain its current economics during the key agreement renewal cycle in 2027-2031. Third, whether automotive, IoT, PCs, and data centers, the "second growth curves," can offset handset maturity quickly enough and with sufficiently high returns.

Business, Industry, and Moat

Qualcomm's business is not hard to understand, but the details are not simple. The company essentially has two economic engines. The first is QCT, the chip and system platform business, which sells SoCs, RF front-end, connectivity, AI, and compute platforms to device makers in handsets, automotive, IoT, PCs, and other markets. The second is QTL, the patent licensing business, which collects license fees from device makers using 3G/4G/5G technologies. In its 2025 10-K, the company clearly states that it makes money mainly by selling integrated circuit products and licensing its intellectual property.

Breaking down fiscal 2025 revenue, handsets within QCT generated $27.793 billion, automotive generated $3.957 billion, and IoT generated $6.617 billion; QTL licensing revenue was $5.582 billion. This shows that Qualcomm is still structured as "handset-led, with non-handset growing," rather than as a company that has already fully moved away from handsets. By fiscal Q2 2026, QCT quarterly revenue was $9.076 billion, of which handsets still accounted for $6.024 billion. Automotive had grown to $1.326 billion, while IoT was $1.726 billion, showing that diversification continues to advance.

The predictability of this business is layered. Because QTL depends on long-term patent licensing agreements, its economic profile is close to a franchise with high gross margins, low capital intensity, and recurring fees. The company discloses that patent license agreements with key OEMs are generally long-term agreements, with expirations mainly distributed across fiscal 2027-2031. By contrast, QCT, especially the handset chip portion, looks more like a typical high-end semiconductor platform business, with greater exposure to product cycles, inventory, memory prices, customer share, and macro demand swings. As a result, Qualcomm's overall revenue is not utility-like stability. It is one part highly stable, one part clearly cyclical.

On customer dependence, Qualcomm disclosed that in fiscal 2025, Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi each accounted for more than 10% of consolidated revenue. In longer-term risk disclosures, the company also clearly noted that Apple is expected to gradually move certain future products to internally developed modems, which will reduce Qualcomm's related revenue through fiscal 2027. For long-term investors, this is not an abstract risk. It is a real variable, already written into official filings, that needs continuous tracking.

At the industry level, Qualcomm operates in an industry with a mature core market plus new growth branches. The main smartphone market has broadly entered maturity. Global smartphone shipments grew only slightly in 2025, and 2026 has also been disrupted by tight memory supply. Counterpoint also noted that global smartphone SoC shipments fell 8% year over year in Q1 2026. On the other hand, automotive, industrial IoT, PCs, and edge AI are opening new market space. At its 2024 Investor Day, Qualcomm set a five-year target for combined FY29 automotive and IoT revenue of $22 billion, including $8 billion from automotive and $14 billion from IoT. This indicates that the industry is not in decline; rather, the old core is slowing while new use cases are expanding.

The competitive landscape is not a single rival, but a set of rivals across different dimensions. In handset SoCs and modems, Qualcomm faces MediaTek, Apple, Samsung LSI, and UNISOC. In RF and connectivity, it faces Broadcom and other RF players. In automotive, edge AI, and data centers, it faces broader compute ecosystems such as Nvidia, Mobileye, NXP, and AMD. Qualcomm's own 10-K also lists Broadcom, MediaTek, Samsung, Apple, Nvidia, and others as major competitors.

On moat, my judgment is: there is a moat, and more than one, but not every moat is equally stable.

In sum, I think Qualcomm's moat is overall stable, modestly pressured in handsets, and widening in automotive/IoT/edge AI. The strongest moat remains the patent licensing system, large-scale R&D reuse, and high-end wireless/compute platform integration capability. The most important warning sign is that OEM self-development on the handset side is really happening. The company has disclosed the Apple in-house modem risk, while Xiaomi also launched its self-developed flagship chip in 2026, showing that "customer internalization" is not just a theoretical concern.

If the stock market were closed for the next five years, I would be willing to own this business, but only if my purchase price were reasonable. This is a good company, but it is not the kind of extremely simple asset that lets me sleep well even if I pay somewhat too much.

Management and Capital Allocation

On management, my judgment on Qualcomm is: generally credible and clearly long-term oriented, but not so perfectly shareholder-friendly that it deserves unconditional trust. The 2026 proxy shows that most Qualcomm executive compensation is tied to company performance and stock price performance. In fiscal 2025, 61% of the CEO's target total compensation was based on company performance, compared with 60% for other NEOs, and at least 90% of total target executive compensation was variable compensation. The company also has governance arrangements such as clawback provisions, prohibitions on executive hedging/pledging, and no single-trigger change-in-control payments.

But whether management and shareholders are "deeply tied together" is moderately favorable, not excellent. As of December 15, 2025, CEO Cristiano Amon beneficially owned about 217,483 shares, representing less than 1% of the company. All current executives and directors combined also beneficially owned less than 1%. This means management has equity discipline, but this is not a founder-led governance structure with heavy insider ownership. The positive is that the company also requires the CEO to hold company stock equal to 10x annual salary, and other executive officers to hold 2x annual salary; it disclosed that all then-serving NEOs had met the requirement.

On capital allocation, Qualcomm's biggest historical strength has been long-term cash return discipline. In fiscal 2018, large repurchases reduced year-end shares outstanding from 1.474 billion shares in 2017 to 1.219 billion shares. By the end of fiscal 2025, that had fallen further to 1.074 billion shares. In the more recent cycle, during the first six months of fiscal 2026 the company repurchased another 34 million shares for $5.4 billion. A simple calculation implies an average repurchase price of about $159 per share, well below the current market price of roughly $238 per share, so this round of repurchases looks rational in hindsight. In March 2026, the company also announced a new $20 billion repurchase authorization and raised its quarterly dividend from $0.89 to $0.92, lifting the annualized dividend to $3.68.

My view on the buybacks is: overall acceptable, excellent in some years, but it would be too simple to say the company bought back stock only when it was deeply undervalued. Qualcomm has indeed reduced its share count over the long run, and the most recent round looks relatively attractive in hindsight. But historically, many repurchases also offset stock-based compensation and supported per-share metrics. I therefore do not treat the buybacks themselves as the core bullish reason; I treat them as one part of capital allocation discipline.

M&A is a newer observation point. In December 2025, Qualcomm completed its acquisition of Alphawave Semi for consideration of about $2.3 billion. The fiscal Q2 2026 10-Q disclosed that this transaction created $2.215 billion of goodwill, allocated to the data center business, and the company acknowledged that the goodwill mainly came from assembled workforce and expected synergies. For long-term shareholders, this kind of acquisition is not necessarily bad, but it shows that Qualcomm is partly moving from a "high cash return company" into a phase of "using capital to bet on the next platform." Whether that succeeds still needs time to prove.

Overall, I see no obvious integrity flaw in management. Disclosures around tax anomalies, customer concentration, supply chain, license renewals, and other risks are also reasonably candid. But because insider ownership is not high, acquisitions are increasing, and the new data center story has not yet been proven, I am unwilling to give a full score.

Financial Quality and Owner Earnings

First, here is a key financial table based on directly verifiable data from official annual and quarterly reports. To avoid inventing figures, this table prioritizes formal disclosed metrics directly extracted during this research. 2026 TTM is an arithmetic derivation based on FY2025 and FY2026 H1/FY2025 H1.

The annual report figures in the table come from Qualcomm's 10-Ks and latest 10-Q. The 2018/2020 key figures are from the five-year summary and cash flow statement in the 2020 10-K; 2023-2025 are from the 2025 10-K; 2026 TTM is derived by subtracting and adding FY2025 and FY2026 H1/FY2025 H1.

This table shows several important facts.

First, growth exists, but it is not smooth. From fiscal 2020 to fiscal 2025, revenue grew from $23.531 billion to $44.284 billion, a five-year compound growth rate of roughly 13%-14%. But the curve went through a 2022 peak, a 2023 decline, and a 2024-2025 recovery. This is not a consumer staple that can be extrapolated linearly; it is a business with semiconductor and handset cycles.

Second, profit quality is generally good, and cash flow is more reliable than accounting profit. In the three full fiscal years from 2023 to 2025, operating cash flow was $11.299 billion, $12.202 billion, and $14.012 billion, respectively, corresponding to free cash flow of $9.849 billion, $11.161 billion, and $12.820 billion. In fiscal 2025 in particular, GAAP net income was significantly depressed by tax items to $5.541 billion, while operating cash flow reached $14.012 billion. This suggests that 2025 GAAP net income does not represent the company's true earning power. In fiscal H1 2026, GAAP net income was lifted to $10.375 billion by tax benefits, again showing that looking only at net income can be misleading.

Third, Qualcomm is a high-R&D, low-capex model. Fiscal 2025 R&D spending was $9.042 billion, already 20% of revenue, while capital expenditures were only $1.192 billion. This means its growth relies mainly on knowledge capital rather than heavy-asset expansion, consistent with the traits of a strong platform semiconductor company.

Fourth, the balance sheet is generally sound. As of March 29, 2026, the company had $9.799 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities, and $15.270 billion in debt, implying net debt of about $5.47 billion. Compared with fiscal 2025 operating income of $12.355 billion and interest expense of $664 million, interest coverage is around 18x. On a rough TTM EBITDA basis, net debt/EBITDA is still clearly below 0.5x, nowhere near a strained balance sheet.

Fifth, working capital needs monitoring, but I do not yet see danger signs. Inventory at the end of fiscal 2025 was $6.526 billion, basically stable versus $6.423 billion at the end of 2024. But by the end of March 2026, inventory had risen to more than $7.3 billion because of acquisitions and supply chain factors, dragging operating cash flow in the first half. Historically, in 2022 the company also prepaid large amounts to suppliers because of multi-year capacity commitments. This shows that although the model is asset-light, it is not completely free of supply chain capital-usage risk.

I do not see obvious financial fraud or aggressive accounting red flags. The reasons are: first, cash flow has long supported earnings; second, large tax impacts and M&A accounting effects are clearly explained in formal disclosures; third, the Alphawave acquisition was explicitly disclosed as not material to the consolidated financial statements, with no obvious sign that acquisitions are being used to mask operating problems. The issue to watch is not "fraud," but tax items, cyclicality, and M&A causing periodic distortions in GAAP net income.

Now consider Owner Earnings. Using a strict, conservative approach, I do not make fancy adjustments and simply use TTM free cash flow as the floor for Owner Earnings: FY2025 operating cash flow of $14.012 billion + FY2026 H1 operating cash flow of $7.414 billion - FY2025 H1 operating cash flow of $7.141 billion, resulting in TTM operating cash flow of about $14.285 billion; subtract corresponding TTM capital expenditures of about $1.783 billion, resulting in conservative Owner Earnings of about $12.50 billion.

I call this a "conservative" measure because Qualcomm is a fabless, high-R&D, low-capex company, and management has also explicitly stated that future capital expenditures include spending to support growth and diversification. In theory, after splitting total capex into maintenance and growth capex, true Owner Earnings could be somewhat higher. But to avoid overestimating, I do not include this potential upward adjustment in the main valuation model. Also, because stock-based compensation is a real cost, I do not add SBC back as if it were free profit.

At the current share price of about $238.16 and roughly 1.07 billion diluted shares, the equity market value is about $255 billion. That corresponds to roughly 20x conservative Owner Earnings. This is not the pricing of a cheap company.

Valuation and Margin of Safety

I use three valuation methods, but only the Owner Earnings discounted model is the primary method. Qualcomm's true value clearly does not lie in book assets, but in distributable cash flow and the patent/platform moat.

Discounted Owner Earnings Method

The main model starts from conservative Owner Earnings of $12.5 billion and uses about 1.075 billion diluted shares, implying a starting point of roughly $11.6 per share. I set three scenarios:

The meaning behind these assumptions is clear. The conservative scenario requires believing Qualcomm is only a mature platform whose growth is significantly dragged down by handset maturity. The base scenario requires believing the handset base remains stable while automotive/IoT/PC/data centers gradually take over. The bull scenario implies that Qualcomm can truly execute diversification while maintaining extremely high returns on capital. A balanced conservative investor clearly should not use the bull case to build conviction.

Based on this model, my intrinsic value ranges are:

  • Conservative intrinsic value range: $150-180/share

  • Fair intrinsic value range: $190-230/share

  • Bull intrinsic value range: $260-300/share

At the current price of about $238.16, the share price is at a clear premium to the conservative range and a slight premium to the upper end of the fair range. It only becomes "roughly fair" if a more optimistic diversification path is included. For a balanced conservative holder, this does not provide a sufficient margin of safety.

Relative Valuation Method

I use relative valuation only as supporting judgment, not as the main conclusion, because Qualcomm is not perfectly comparable with peers. MediaTek is more like a pure handset SoC company; Broadcom is more like an infrastructure/software/connectivity platform compound; NXP is more skewed toward automotive and industrial; AMD is more weighted toward CPUs/GPUs and data centers. Qualcomm is unusual because it owns both a licensing cash cow and a chip platform business.

For Qualcomm itself, the current profile is roughly as follows: P/FCF around 20x, P/B around 9-10x, very low net leverage, and very high ROIC/ROE in normal years. This means the market is not selling it as a cheap cyclical stock. It is valuing it as a "high-return quality platform company with cyclical and policy risks." This valuation can be explained, but it is not cheap. Expensive peers do not prove Qualcomm is cheap. From this angle, relative valuation reinforces one conclusion: QCOM now looks more fair-to-full than bargain-priced.

Asset Value and Liquidation Value Method

Qualcomm is not suitable for a liquidation-value purchase approach. As of the end of March 2026, the company had about $9.799 billion in cash and marketable securities and $15.270 billion in debt, so it is not a net-cash company. A meaningful portion of its book assets is goodwill and intangible assets. Goodwill alone was $11.358 billion at the end of fiscal 2025, plus $2.215 billion of new goodwill from the Alphawave acquisition. What is truly valuable is the large pool of wireless standard-essential patents, platform ecosystem, customer relationships, and R&D organization capability that is not fully reflected on the balance sheet. In other words, Qualcomm's downside protection comes mainly from earning power, not asset liquidation value.

Therefore, my price framework for the stock is:

  • Ideal buy price range: $150-180

  • Acceptable holding price range: $180-230

  • Clearly overvalued price range: above $260

  • Current price judgment: somewhat expensive, not disastrously overvalued, but not cheap enough

For a balanced conservative investor, I think at least a 20%-30% margin of safety is required, meaning a price closer to the lower end of fair value rather than the upper end.

Risks, Bear Case, and Checklist

The most important risk is not share price volatility, but erosion of long-term cash flow power and the moat.

There are five core business risks. The first is competition and customer internalization. Apple is clearly moving down the in-house modem path, and Xiaomi has also begun launching flagship self-developed chips. If major customers gradually shift high-value components from external sourcing to internal production, Qualcomm's handset pricing power and volume will both come under pressure. The second is QTL renewal and regulatory risk. Key licensing agreements will expire in stages during 2027-2031. If renewal terms worsen or the patent royalty model is further challenged, this high-profit QTL cash cow may shrink. The third is handset cycle risk. Counterpoint noted a decline in smartphone SoC shipments in Q1 2026, and management itself also mentioned in fiscal Q2 2026 earnings materials and the call that tight memory supply disrupted demand for some handset OEMs. The fourth is China exposure. The company itself emphasizes in risk disclosures that the China market and U.S.-China relations are important variables. The fifth is new business return shortfall. If the automotive, IoT, PC, and data center stories produce slow revenue growth, below-target margins, or goodwill impairments, valuation will be repriced.

The strongest bear case is actually very powerful: Qualcomm may be a company that looks diversified but remains highly dependent on handsets and legacy patent economics. Bears would argue that QTL earns excess returns from standard-essential patents built over decades, but this system is naturally exposed to regulation, litigation, and customer bargaining. QCT is excellent, but still tied to the handset cycle. Automotive and data centers sound good in market narratives, but their current revenue scale is still limited relative to the company, while the new data center acquisition created large goodwill and unproven returns. If these bear arguments are right, Qualcomm's current valuation is not buying an "undervalued cash cow"; it is buying a strong company whose transformation success has already been paid for in advance.

In my view, if any of the following facts appear, the investment thesis should be considered falsified:

  • QTL economics materially deteriorate: licensing revenue or margin declines significantly for two consecutive full years, and the decline is not a short-term settlement fluctuation.

  • Structural handset bleeding: Apple, self-developed Android SoCs, and Chinese customer changes cause sustained declines in QCT handset revenue, while automotive/IoT/PC cannot fill the gap.

  • ROIC declines materially and persistently: if normalized ROIC falls below the mid-to-high teens for an extended period, the moat is shrinking.

  • M&A consumes cash flow: data centers and new businesses consume large amounts of capital without visible high returns, or impairments become obvious.

  • Balance sheet deterioration: net debt/EBITDA rises materially, forcing reductions in capital returns.

Compared with other opportunities, my judgment is: buying Qualcomm now is not clearly better than buying an index fund or high-grade bonds. Using my valuation framework above, if you buy today around $238, Qualcomm's rough annualized return over the next ten years looks like: 2%-4% in the conservative scenario, 6%-8% in the base scenario, and 9%-11% in the bull scenario. That is not a poor return, but only in the base or better scenario does it clearly beat the recent around 4.5% yield level of the U.S. 10-year Treasury. For a stock still affected by technological substitution, customer concentration, and regulatory variables, that risk compensation is not thick. If you could hold only 5 assets, I think Qualcomm qualifies for the candidate list, but at the current price it may not qualify for the final list.

But their scale is still small: Q2 FY2026 automotive revenue was $1.326 billion for the quarter (up +38% year over year), and IoT was $1.726 billion, still secondary versus the quarter’s $10.6 billion total. The company’s FY29 targets are $22 billion combined for automotive + IoT ($8 billion automotive, $14 billion IoT), plus $4 billion for PCs, $4 billion for industrial, and $2 billion for XR.     The drivers make this clearer. Volume: handsets are the largest engine but face headwinds. The FY29 target is $14 billion, the largest of the six targets, covering industrial, consumer IoT, PCs (the Snapdragon X series entering Windows), and XR. Edge AI is the core narrative Qualcomm is betting on: extending the NPU capabilities from handsets into PCs and end devices. But IoT has historically been volatile, with highly fragmented customers, so uncertainty around the $14 billion target is higher than in automotive.

    Data centers: the newest, furthest-out, and purest option value.     Conclusion: Qualcomm’s moat is not “widening overall” and is not “collapsing overall.” It is structurally migrating: the most profitable QTL moat persists but is under pressure; handset SoCs are narrowing; automotive/IoT/edge AI is widening. Whether “the widening speed ≥ the narrowing speed” will determine whether the net value of the moat widens or stays flat over the next three to five years. CEO Cristiano Amon’s beneficial ownership was about 217,483 shares as of December 15, 2025, less than 1% of the company (per the proxy materials cited by the report), and all current executives and directors together also owned less than 1%. At the current share price of about $191, Amon’s personal stake is worth a little over $40 million. For a company with a market capitalization of about $201.5 billion, that is “constraining, but not a life’s-fortune-on-the-line” level. Qualcomm was founded in 1985 by the Jacobs family and others, but today it is long past founder control and is governed by professional managers. It lacks the structure Baillie Gifford prefers, where a founder has staked nearly everything and is willing to sacrifice the present for ten years from now.

That is cash moving from “buybacks” toward “buying the future.” It reflects long-termism, but also an execution bet not yet realized.
