The report says the market has already priced many years of favorable prospects from “artificial intelligence plus servers” into the stock. If even one part fails to materialize, returns could be quite ordinary.

Several risks also deserve attention. More than 90% of its revenue comes from overseas, and Greater China alone accounts for nearly half, so developments in China and exchange-rate swings can affect it; the industry is highly cyclical, with orders rising and falling; some businesses, including one type of filter, have already recorded impairment, showing that not every segment is strong.

According to the report’s calculations, the current price of 9800 yen is far above its estimated fair value. It recommends that patient long-term investors put the stock on a watchlist and consider it only if the price falls back to 3000 to 4500 yen, rather than chasing it now.

Here is the conclusion in brief: for Murata Manufacturing, my investment rating is Watch. The current price is JPY 9,800/share (Reuters delayed quote on June 9, 2026), and at this level there is no margin of safety. This company suits long-term value investors who are willing to track it patiently, but who can be strict about buying only at a fair price. The biggest uncertainties concentrate in three areas: the durability of AI/server demand, exposure to China and FX/geopolitics, and whether ROIC can recover meaningfully after capacity expansion.

My preliminary conclusion is clear: Murata Manufacturing is an understandable and generally high-quality electronic-components business, but at the current price it does not meet the margin-of-safety requirement of a conservative long-term owner. Based on the fiscal year ended March 2026 and the June 9 share price, the company's equity market value is about JPY 17.84 trillion; against FY2026 profit attributable to owners of parent of JPY 233,920 million, the trailing P/E is about 76x; against FY2026 free cash flow of JPY 231,408 million, P/FCF is about 77x; against FY2026 equity attributable to owners of parent of JPY 2,718,743 million, P/B is about 6.6x; even using the company's FY2027 forecast EPS of JPY 160.96, the current share price still implies a forward PE of about 61x. This is not a "bad company"; it looks more like a good company at a bad price.

Three points support this judgment. First, Murata truly has a moat in passive components and high-end electronic parts, with strong R&D, strong manufacturing, and strong customer relationships, especially through long accumulation in materials, processes, vertical integration, and global delivery. Second, the balance sheet is extremely strong: FY2026 year-end cash and cash equivalents were JPY 653,701 million, while bonds and borrowings were only JPY 3,261 million. Even including lease liabilities, it remains in a substantial net-cash position. Third, the issue is not the business itself, but that the market has already priced in many years of attractive future growth from AI + servers + automotive.

If I switch the frame to "I am considering acquiring a business," my answer is: this is a company worth studying, and perhaps worth owning; but it is not a company worth buying aggressively at today's quoted price. For investors with a horizon above 10 years and a conservative-leaning balance, I would rather place it on a high-quality watchlist than initiate a position immediately.

Business Understanding and Industry Structure

How exactly does this company make money? Murata Manufacturing mainly sells electronic components and related products. In FY2026 revenue, Components accounted for 63.3% of revenue, with capacitors alone accounting for 51.1%, and inductors/EMI filters accounting for 12.2%. Devices and Modules accounted for 35.9%, including RF devices and communication modules, batteries and power supplies, functional devices, and other products. The remaining businesses were small. By application, FY2026 revenue came from communications 35.7%, automotive/mobility 25.9%, computers 16.9%, home appliances 7.8%, and industry and others 13.7%. In other words, this company essentially earns money in the global electronics supply chain by "designing high-performance miniaturized components, manufacturing them consistently, and delivering them to customers on time."

Its customers are not retail consumers, but electronic-equipment manufacturers around the world. On revenue recognition, the company discloses that most contracts recognize revenue at the point when performance obligations are satisfied, transaction consideration is generally collected within one year, and it does not provide long-term disclosure on remaining performance obligations because most contracts are expected to have terms of no more than one year. This means Murata's revenue is rooted in long-term electrification trends, but it is not high-visibility revenue like a software subscription. It is closer to industrial revenue with stable long-term demand but clear short-term order volatility.

The "repeatability" and "stability" of this business should be separated. Repeatability is very strong, because smartphones, cars, servers, and industrial equipment need to keep purchasing large volumes of electronic components every year. Stability is moderate, because industry inventory cycles, end demand, and product ASPs fluctuate. A typical signal in FY2026 was that total company revenue grew 5.0% year over year, with capacitor revenue up 12.6% and inductor revenue up 11.0%, while RF devices and communication modules revenue fell 11.0%. By application, communications revenue fell 3.1%, while computers grew 28.4%. This shows Murata is not a linear growth machine, but an excellent yet cyclical high-end manufacturer.

On cost structure, this is a high-R&D, manufacturing-heavy, capital-intensive business. FY2026 R&D expenses were JPY 158,870 million, equal to 8.7% of revenue; capital expenditure was JPY 247,778 million, equal to 13.5% of revenue; depreciation and amortization was JPY 178,212 million. This means Murata cannot "collect rent while lying down" like an asset-light platform. It must keep investing in materials, processes, equipment, and capacity to maintain its lead.

On dependence, the company discloses that no customer group exceeded 10% of consolidated revenue, but it also clearly acknowledges high dependence on certain business partners. In its FY2025 annual report, it stated that capacitors accounted for 48% of consolidated revenue, so dependence on a specific product remains clear. Geographically, 92.7% of FY2026 revenue came from overseas, and by customer location, Greater China accounted for 47.2%. The annual report also notes that Greater China accounts for about 50% of consolidated revenue and about 20% of group output, so internal and external conditions in China have a major effect on the company.

From the perspective of "is this a business I can understand?", my answer is yes, while recognizing that it is not an extremely simple business, but an understandable complex manufacturer. It has many products, many end markets, and high technical requirements, but the profit logic is not mysterious: within the electrification trend, it uses technology and manufacturing capability to keep winning design-ins and supply share. If the stock market closed for 5 years, I would be willing to own this business at a reasonable price; but at the current price, I am not willing to stake the next 10 years of returns on a cyclical components leader whose valuation is already very aggressive. Business understandability score: 4/5.

From an industry perspective, electronic components are not a declining industry, but a long-term growth industry with strong short- and medium-term cyclicality. In its latest annual report, the company clearly states that the electronic-components market in which it operates is expected to keep growing over the medium to long term. At the same time, the annual report repeatedly emphasizes faster technological iteration, shorter product life cycles, and intense competition. In other words, this is an industry with long-term demand, but no natural comfort.

On major competitors, at least TDK and Taiyo Yuden can be clearly listed. Reuters' description of TDK shows businesses covering passive components, sensors, magnetic applications, and energy applications, making its portfolio more diversified. Its description of Taiyo Yuden shows a core still centered on capacitors, inductors, and related electronic components. Compared with these peers, Murata's strengths are scale, technology platform, and global delivery, but the industry's profit pool is not monopolized by one player the way it can be in software platforms. Competition persists over the long term.

Therefore, my characterization of the industry is: a good company in a good industry, but not a perfect industry with a naturally wide moat and naturally high certainty. Industry attractiveness score: 3/5.

Moat Analysis

If the moat is broken down, Murata's advantages are clear, but not every item is equally strong.

Brand advantage: present, but mainly a B2B engineering brand rather than a consumer brand. In electronic components, brand does not come from advertising. It comes from whether engineers trust you during design-in and whether procurement believes you can supply consistently. Murata has long served global electronic-equipment manufacturers, and that reputation is real.

Cost advantage and scale advantage: clear. The company publicly emphasizes that one of its core capabilities is a vertically integrated production system from raw materials to finished products, with continuous investment in materials, processes, production, product design, analysis, evaluation, and other technologies. It also treats its global sales network as a key advantage for reducing customer dependence and expanding across applications. For a high-end passive-component company, this complete chain from materials to manufacturing to delivery is the hardest part to replicate.

Switching costs: medium to high. Murata does not have "system lock-in" like ERP or payment networks, but in automotive, industrial, server, and communication applications, once a device has been designed in and validated, customers do not easily switch suppliers, especially when miniaturization, high reliability, and low power consumption matter. At the same time, it is not irreplaceable. The annual report explicitly lists "competitors gaining technological leadership" and "overwhelming cost reduction" as risks that could have a major impact on market share.

Channel advantage: present. The company explicitly lists its global sales network as an important means of reducing dependence on a single customer and covering many customers and applications. This is not a retail channel, but a global OEM/EMS customer-relationship and service system.

Patents, licenses, quality, and process barriers: present. The company separately lists intellectual-property risk as a key risk and explains that it will continue to accumulate IP in R&D and manufacturing. It also emphasizes ISO/IATF and other standards in its quality system, especially as the share of mobility and IT infrastructure markets rises, making quality issues more important to profitability. For an electronic-components company, the real barriers are not administrative licenses, but materials recipes, manufacturing experience, yield management, reliability validation, and customer certification cycles.

Network effects and data advantage: basically absent. This is not a platform company. It does not strengthen itself through user scale, nor does it directly monetize a data flywheel.

Corporate culture and operating capability: fairly strong. The company repeatedly emphasizes manufacturing, or monozukuri, SCM/ECM linkage, and cross-organization collaboration. These statements are not moats by themselves, but in long-cycle manufacturing, stable yield, delivery, engineering collaboration, and customer service can indeed form an operating barrier that is visible yet hard to quantify.

Still, Murata's moat is not "evenly wide across all product lines." In FY2026, RF devices and communication modules revenue fell 11.0%, and the company recorded goodwill impairment in the SAW filter-related business, explicitly noting in its financial results that the impairment weighed on profit. This shows that Murata's moat is portfolio-based: deeper in core passive components, not necessarily equally solid in some module businesses.

On whether the moat is widening, stable, or narrowing, I lean toward this judgment: the moat in core passive components is stable and slightly widening; the moat in some module businesses is stable or even under marginal pressure. For competitors to replicate Murata's capabilities in materials, equipment, yield, global delivery, and customer certification often requires many years and huge capital investment. But in categories with price competition and fast product iteration, the moat cannot fully resist the cycle. The company has some pricing or pass-through ability in an inflationary environment; at least the annual report clearly says it will work to reflect exchange-rate changes in overseas selling prices. But it is clearly not a consumer monopoly that can "raise prices easily every year."

If the question is "can the company remain profitable during an economic downturn?", the answer is broadly yes, but profitability will shrink meaningfully. The company stayed profitable from FY2024 to FY2026, but operating margin fell from 23.4% in FY2022 to 13.1% in FY2024, before recovering to 16.0% in FY2025 and 15.4% in FY2026. This shows high margins contain both structural advantages and cyclical tailwinds. Moat strength score: 4/5.

Management and Capital Allocation

At the management level, my assessment of Murata is: generally credible, with solid governance and a fairly shareholder-oriented stance, but not yet at the level of "capital-allocation master." One important positive is that the company did not dress up results that fell short. The annual report clearly states that the revenue, operating-margin, and ROIC targets set in Mid-term Direction 2024 were not achieved. I value this trait of "facing reality honestly."

On governance, the company's 2025 corporate governance report discloses 6 independent directors. The compensation committee consists of 4 members, of whom 3 are independent outside directors, and it is chaired by an outside director. The nomination committee likewise requires independent outside directors to form a majority, and in FY2024 it conducted a 360-degree evaluation of the president and discussed succession planning. Among large Japanese manufacturers, these arrangements are relatively standardized and friendly to medium- and long-term shareholders.

The compensation system also looks more like a modern shareholder-oriented design than many traditional manufacturing companies. Compensation for executive directors consists of fixed compensation, bonuses, performance share units (PSUs), and restricted stock (RS). Metrics include consolidated operating profit, ROIC, relative TSR, and sustainability indicators, and there is a malus/clawback mechanism. This structure is reasonable because it at least tries to pull management away from "pursuing only scale" and "pursuing only short-term profit."

But from an "owner-like" perspective, I also need to point out shortcomings. First, management is not a team with a high ownership stake and a strong owner-operator style. The annual report discloses that President Norio Nakajima held 79,200 shares, worth about JPY 780 million at the June 9, 2026 share price. That is not small for an individual, but remains very limited relative to the company's market value of about JPY 17.84 trillion. Second, although the company has established shareholding guidelines for executive directors, requiring the president to hold shares equal to 2 times fixed compensation within five years, and the president held about 2.6 times fixed compensation as of the end of FY2025, this still is not enough to bind management's fate closely to that of shareholders.

In capital allocation, the company has done three things in recent years: sustained dividends, regular buybacks, and maintained an extremely strong balance sheet. The shareholder-return page shows that total annual dividends from FY2022 to FY2026 rose from JPY 83.2 billion to JPY 118.6 billion, while DOE rose from 4.0% to 4.5%. It conducted buybacks of JPY 80, 80, and 100 billion in FY2023, FY2025, and FY2026, respectively. In FY2026 full-year results, the company again proposed raising DOE to 5% by FY2027, and on April 30, 2026 the board approved a new buyback plan of up to JPY 150 billion and up to 75 million shares.

These actions are positive in terms of "returning cash to shareholders," but I cannot give a high score on "buying back when undervalued." The reason is that the current valuation itself is high, and the company's June 5, 2026 announcement showed that the new buyback approved on April 30 had not yet begun execution as of May 31. This keeps the situation open: if the company later repurchases heavily in a high-valuation zone, I would count it as a negative for capital allocation; if it executes opportunistically during volatility, the assessment would be more neutral.

On M&A, the company itself lists M&A, business alliances, and strategic investment as "medium-probability, high-impact" risk items, and the FY2026 financial results included goodwill impairment related to the SAW filter business. This shows that not every capital investment creates value. My conclusion is: management credibility is above average; capital allocation rationality is better than average; but it is not enough for me to assign a high valuation premium to the stock because of management. Management and capital allocation score: 3.5/5.

Financial Quality and Owner Earnings

Start with core financial quality. Over the past five fiscal years, Murata's revenue first declined and then recovered: FY2022 revenue was JPY 1,812.5 billion, FY2023 JPY 1,686.8 billion, FY2024 JPY 1,640.2 billion, FY2025 JPY 1,743.4 billion, and FY2026 JPY 1,830.9 billion. Operating margin fell from 23.4% in FY2022 to 13.1% in FY2024, then recovered to 16.0% in FY2025 and 15.4% in FY2026. This is not a linear compounding path, but the real shape of a high-quality manufacturing company through a cycle.

On cash flow matching, my assessment of Murata is "profits are generally real, and cash quality is good." On the basis above, average free cash flow for FY2022-FY2026 was about JPY 219.7 billion, average net profit over five years was about JPY 241.3 billion, and average FCF/net profit was about 91%. FY2026 free cash flow of JPY 231.4 billion broadly matched profit attributable to owners of JPY 233.9 billion. In other words, this is not a company with attractive accounting profit but chronically disappointing cash flow.

The balance sheet is extremely strong. FY2026 total assets were JPY 3,199,099 million, total liabilities were JPY 481,289 million, and the liability-to-asset ratio was about 15.0%. Cash and cash equivalents were JPY 653,701 million, while bonds and borrowings were only JPY 3,261 million. Even including lease liabilities of JPY 52,507 million, the company still had about JPY 597,933 million of net cash. Using operating profit of JPY 281,835 million against FY2026 finance costs of JPY 3,189 million, interest/finance-cost coverage was about 88x. Net debt/EBITDA was significantly negative. From a survival-capacity perspective alone, this is very safe.

On working capital, FY2026 trade receivables rose from JPY 294,419 million to JPY 328,159 million, inventories rose from JPY 482,833 million to JPY 520,472 million, and trade payables rose from JPY 69,617 million to JPY 79,798 million. The rise in receivables and inventory is not bad by itself, because during the same period the company's total backlog rose 55.2% year over year to JPY 446,169 million, and capacitor backlog grew 89.5%, suggesting capacity expansion and inventory preparation were not completely detached from demand.

Capital-expenditure intensity deserves emphasis. FY2026 capital expenditure was JPY 247,778 million, above FY2025's JPY 180,471 million. The company also clearly stated that planned FY2027 capital expenditure is JPY 250,000 million, mainly to expand capacity for high-growth products used in servers and other applications. This means Murata will remain a business requiring continuous heavy investment in the next few years. For a long-term owner, this is not necessarily bad, but it means growth is not "zero-cost growth."

On share count, the company's total shares outstanding at the end of FY2026 were 1,963,001,843 shares, unchanged from FY2025, but treasury stock increased from 100,640,793 to 142,709,692 shares, and average shares outstanding fell from 1,868,959,466 to 1,831,710,389. This indicates buybacks have indeed helped per-share data. On dividends, the shareholder-return page shows dividends per share rising from JPY 43.33 in FY2022 to JPY 65.00 in FY2026, with an FY2027 forecast of JPY 70.00.

On accounting quality, I did not see obvious signs of financial fraud or aggressive accounting. The issue to note is instead another type: honestly recognizing failed investments. In FY2026 financial results, goodwill fell from JPY 135,746 million to JPY 99,489 million, while other expenses rose to JPY 54,987 million. The company also clearly explained that this included goodwill impairment related to the SAW filter business. For shareholders, this is not good news, but from the perspective of "is the company covering up the problem?", it is healthier than leaving the problem on the balance sheet indefinitely.

For Owner Earnings estimation, I take a more conservative approach. FY2026 operating cash flow was JPY 425.2 billion. The company has also clearly stated that a meaningful portion of FY2026 and FY2027 capital expenditure is for expanding capacity to meet high-growth demand from servers and other products, so not all of it is maintenance capex. If we conservatively assume maintenance capital expenditure of JPY 200-220 billion, then FY2026 conservative "owner earnings" would be about JPY 205-225 billion. Taking a midpoint of JPY 215 billion, the current market value of about JPY 17.84 trillion is equivalent to about 83x Owner Earnings. This is not a Buffett-style entry point.

Valuation, Margin of Safety, and Final Judgment

Intrinsic Value Estimate

Owner earnings discount method. I do not use the most optimistic short-term sentiment embedded in the FY2027 forecast for full capitalization. Instead, I use FY2026 cash flow and the capacity-expansion plan for a conservative normalized estimate. Assumptions: Conservative case: starting Owner Earnings of JPY 220 billion, 10-year growth of 4%, discount rate of 10%, terminal growth of 1.5%; Base case: starting Owner Earnings of JPY 240 billion, 10-year growth of 6%, discount rate of 9%, terminal growth of 2%; Bull case: starting Owner Earnings of JPY 260 billion, 10-year growth of 8%, discount rate of 8%, terminal growth of 2.5%; All three cases add back FY2026 year-end net cash of about JPY 597.9 billion. On this basis, my estimated per-share values are roughly: conservative about JPY 2,050; base about JPY 2,916; bull about JPY 4,419. These are not "target prices," but conservative equity-value estimates for a high-quality yet capital-intensive cyclical manufacturer. The basic inputs come from the company's FY2026 cash flow, balance sheet, and current price.

Relative valuation method. Reuters' comparable data show Murata's current valuation is clearly above the more diversified TDK: Murata's recurring-profit-basis PE is about 68.22x, P/S 9.34x, P/B 5.83x, P/CF 41.50x, ROI 8.30%, and ROE 7.51%; TDK's corresponding figures are about 36.06x, 2.88x, 3.22x, 17.90x, 7.58%, and 5.01%. Taiyo Yuden is more expensive, but its ROI/ROE is weaker. Based on readily verifiable peer data, Murata should indeed enjoy some quality premium, but a premium far above TDK's is not easily explained by current returns. Another more intuitive check is this: using the company's FY2027 forecast EPS of JPY 160.96, Murata's current price still implies a forward PE of about 60.9x; using FY2026 actual EBITDA, estimated as operating profit plus depreciation and amortization, EV/EBITDA is about 37.5x. This is still expensive.

Asset or liquidation value method. This company is not a "cigar butt." FY2026 equity attributable to owners per share was about JPY 1,493.6, and net cash was about JPY 328.5/share. The balance sheet also included JPY 99.5 billion of goodwill and JPY 36.2 billion of intangible assets. In other words, asset value provides bottom-side protection far below the current share price, and book assets cannot provide sufficient cushion for buying today.

Combining the three methods, my ranges are as follows:

At the current JPY 9,800, the premium to the ranges above is roughly: about 180%-292% above the conservative range, about 78%-158% above the reasonable range, and even about 40%-78% above the bullish range. This is no longer merely "insufficient margin of safety"; it is basically no margin of safety in the value-investing sense.

Margin of Safety

If answering only one question, is the current price cheap enough?, my answer is: no, and it is far from enough. The most fragile assumption in the current valuation is that the market is assuming Murata can do three things simultaneously for a very long period: first, sustain high growth in AI/server demand; second, restore margins meaningfully after capacity expansion; third, receive valuation multiples from the capital market that remain far above historical norms. If any one of these fails, returns may be very mediocre.

If growth falls short of expectations, the valuation has little resilience. The Fact Book shows that Murata's historical PER has more often been distributed around roughly 14-24x. If the market later reclassifies it as an "excellent but cyclical components leader" rather than a "quasi-AI core asset," then even a return to a historically more common P/E of around 20x, applied to the company's FY2027 forecast EPS of JPY 160.96, would imply a share price of only about JPY 3,219, or potential downside of about 67% from the current price. This is a classic case where the risk of permanent capital loss comes from valuation, not the balance sheet.

So I would define Murata as: a good company, but a bad price at the current level. For conservative long-term investors, it is fully worth waiting for a better price.

Risks, Counterarguments, and Comparisons

The most important risks are not short-term share-price volatility, but the following. First, competition and technological substitution risk. The company itself discloses that if competitors take a technological lead or achieve overwhelming cost reductions, market share and profitability could be materially affected; at the same time, product life cycles in the industry are shortening. Second, product and customer dependence risk. The company clearly acknowledges relatively high dependence on certain partners, and capacitors accounted for 48% of revenue in the FY2025 annual report, so product concentration is not low. Third, China, FX, and geopolitical risk. The company discloses that overseas revenue exceeds 90%, Greater China revenue is close to half, and each 1 yen appreciation/depreciation of the U.S. dollar affects operating profit by about JPY 4.5 billion. Fourth, capital allocation and capacity-expansion risk. If the AI/server cycle is overestimated, heavy capacity expansion will bring not high returns, but pressure on utilization and ROIC. Fifth, overvaluation risk. This is currently the most realistic and most easily overlooked source of risk.

The strongest bear argument is in fact very powerful: Murata is not a "consumer-goods monopoly compounding machine," but a "high-quality, strongly cyclical, capital-intensive" electronic-components leader. It has technology, brand, and net cash, but it also has price downside, product iteration, module-business mistakes, customer bargaining power, and geopolitical exposure. Today's market prices it at a very high multiple, reflecting more of the "imagination space" around the AI server chain than the free-cash-flow return a conservative investor can lock in. I think this bear argument is now more convincing than the bull argument.

What facts would overturn my judgment? If the following occur over the next two to three years, I would become more positive: first, ROIC rises meaningfully and stays above the low teens, preferably near or above 12%-13%; second, high-end component demand from servers/computers is proven to be a multi-year structural expansion rather than a one-off cycle; third, the share price falls back into my reasonable buy range while business quality does not deteriorate. Conversely, if two or more deterioration signals appear, such as declining capacitor share, continued impairment in module businesses, large buybacks executed at high valuations, or ROIC staying below 10% for a long period, then the issue is not just "bad price," but that "the business also needs to be re-evaluated."

Compared with other opportunities, my view is also conservative. Compared with TDK, Murata is purer, stronger in passive components, and has net cash, but TDK's PE, P/S, P/B, and P/CF on Reuters are all significantly lower, so TDK may offer better value for money at this stage. Compared with TOPIX, JPX defines it as a free-float market-cap weighted index covering a broad portion of the Japanese stock market, while Reuters reports that net profit for March fiscal-year companies in the TOPIX constituents is expected to grow by about 6% this fiscal year. In this context, unless you have very high confidence in Murata's long-term excess returns, there is not enough reason to take higher concentration risk in a single stock. Compared with "near risk-free" alternatives, Reuters reports that Japan's policy rate was 0.75% before the June meeting, and the market even expected it to rise to 1%. This of course cannot directly replace equity investing, but it reminds us that taking the business and valuation risk of a single stock like Murata should earn a return compensation far above the cash rate, and I do not think expected returns are sufficient at the current price.

The official FY2026 results show that Murata generated revenue of ¥1,830.856B, with capacitors contributing ¥936.418B, or 51.1%; revenue from computer applications rose +28.4% year on year; and MLCC growth was mainly driven by applications such as servers. This shows that its upside comes from the continuing electronification of multiple existing end markets, not from a single new market exploding from zero.

    In the near to medium term, AI/data center has indeed lifted the ceiling by another notch. The company's guidance for the next fiscal year is revenue of ¥1,960.0B for the fiscal year ending March 2027, up +7.1% year on year, and operating profit of ¥380.0B, up +34.8%. Management's presentation further discloses that Q4 backlog was ¥446.2B, book-to-bill rose to 1.24, and data-center-related demand grew significantly, and it expects revenue from computer applications to rise +44.5%, the capacitor segment to rise +13.4%, and server-related capacitor sales to rise +85%-90% year on year. This is not a minor fluctuation. It is a real structural increase.

    Even so, the nature of this pie remains "incremental electronification + high-end share migration," not a "new blue ocean owned by Murata." In the same FY2026 financial results, revenue from high frequency devices and communication modules fell 11.0% year on year, the Devices and Modules segment fell 5.9%, and the company recorded a goodwill impairment related to SAW filters. This shows that demand growth is uneven, and competition, pricing, inventory cycles, and product transitions will continue to affect how much profit the company can capture. Put differently, AI servers increase component content and raise specifications, but Murata ultimately captures part of the components value pool, not the entire AI infrastructure value pool.

    From a Baillie Gifford perspective, the answer to Q1 is positive but needs restraint. If the question is only whether the runway is long enough, AI/data center, ADAS/xEV, industrial, and global electronification are enough to support years of growth for Murata. If the question is whether this can easily support a fivefold return over ten years, the answer is less straightforward. The company is already a mature leader with roughly ¥1.83T in revenue and a market value of roughly ¥17.84T; a fivefold market value would be about ¥89T. To reach that scale, a large market ceiling alone is not enough. Data-center demand has to persist for years, core capacitor share has to hold, margins and ROIC have to recover, and the valuation cannot compress materially. The most accurate formulation is this: Murata is expanding a very large existing pie, not creating a wholly new one.

In its earnings explanation, the company places the FY2027 growth emphasis on data-center-related demand, especially capacitors, and plans 250.0 billion yen in capital expenditure, including additional capacity for data center capacitors. These points support stronger growth over the next year or two, but they do not amount to five straight years above 15%.

    As for the growth drivers, the main axis should be volume and mix, not price and not a brand-new business. As for new businesses, data centers, automotive electronics, and power modules look more like the migration of the same materials, processes, and customer certification platform into higher-growth applications than a second business platform outside Murata's existing passive-component circle of competence. The company's own brand story also emphasizes that software and network communication capabilities acquired through M&A have been combined with component expertise to expand into new businesses. Today, its business is not just capacitors. The product lines listed on its website include MLCC, inductors/EMI, high-frequency communication modules, lithium-ion batteries and power supplies, and sensors. Medium-Term Direction 2027 also redefines communications around edge devices and IT infrastructure, with the goal of capturing growth opportunities from AI-driven electronic transformation. This looks more like repeated migration of the same capability stack, which is a highly valuable form of reinvention in manufacturing.

    On mistakes and bad news, Murata's public handling deserves credit. The report has already noted that the company acknowledged missing the revenue, operating margin, and ROIC targets in Medium-Term Direction 2024; the official annual securities report also directly states that the economic value targets were not achieved. The FY2026 financial results did not hide the failure in module businesses, but disclosed 43,798 million yen in goodwill impairment for SAW filter-related businesses because the shift to higher-frequency technology was slower than expected. FY2027 guidance materials also put on the table that hyperscaler secondary-module orders already won were cancelled because of defects caused by a firmware update. In addition, after the 2026 unauthorized IT access incident, the company updated its disclosure that the incident may have involved about 73,000 employee-related records and about 15,000 external-related records, while also listing remedial measures such as monitoring, permissions, authentication, and third-party audits. This is not a communication style that reports only good news.

    The reservation is that these are still mainly cases of acknowledging bad projects, revising expectations, and reallocating resources within the existing electronic components platform, rather than proactive self-disruption. Capacitors still accounted for 51.1% of FY2026 revenue, and the growth in FY2027 guidance also mainly comes from data-center-related capacitors and power-module demand. So Murata's real strength is changing tracks, improving processes, and adjusting capital expenditure within the broader electronification wave, not proving that it can leave behind its passive-component/high-end manufacturing advantage and build a separate asset-light or platform business. Over the long term, this is credible resilience, but it is not a talisman that can unconditionally offset the risk of disruption to the core technology.

Order visibility, ASP, capacity utilization, and customer inventories can all fluctuate. Official FY2026 results already provide strong short-term evidence: revenue of ¥1,830.856B and operating profit of ¥281.835B, but net profit attributable to owners of parent was almost flat, while total backlog rose +55.2% year on year and capacitor backlog rose +89.5% year on year. This shows that the market can understand that orders are strong, but still needs confirmation that these orders are not pull-forward demand and will not be consumed by new capacity and price normalization.

    The negative inflection points are just as clear: AI server orders slow, customers correct inventory, MLCC ASP loosens, utilization is insufficient after capacity expansion, or management executes large buybacks at high valuations without improving per-share value. Murata's problem is not that it lacks a story, but that today's share price already requires the story to convert quickly.
