Moog is a provider of high-reliability, mission-critical precision motion control and fluid control systems. Its products include flight controls, actuators, propulsion components, and space hardware, used across military aircraft, commercial aircraft, aerospace, and industrial/medical applications. Revenue is split roughly evenly across its four major segments, and its moat comes from engineering capability, certifications, and deep program embedding. The fundamentals are clearly stronger than they were three years ago, but the author assigns only a Watch rating.

The central reason for not rating it Buy is the mismatch between price and quality: the current price of about US$373 implies roughly 42x trailing PE, while the forward free cash flow yield is only about 1.7%, well below the roughly 4.47% yield on the US 10-year Treasury. In addition, a meaningful share of the cash flow improvement comes from customer advances and working-capital release; FCF conversion has not been stable historically, and after-market revenue is only 14%, so this is not a top-tier after-market cash machine. Using conservative discounted Owner Earnings, the author estimates three intrinsic-value ranges of US$90–130/130–190/190–260. The current price is still nearly double the upper end of the neutral case, leaving no margin of safety.

Additional risks include the material weakness in internal control disclosed in 2025 and revisions to historical financial statements. EY issued an adverse opinion on ICFR, alongside customer concentration, with Boeing accounting for 10% of sales and US government contracts accounting for 38%. The ideal buying range is US$95–145, and the author recommends putting the stock on a watchlist first and waiting for a better price before acting.

From the perspective of a long-term business owner, Moog is an understandable precision motion-control company that is getting better. In military aircraft, commercial aircraft, space, and selected industrial and medical niches, it supplies flight-control, actuation, propulsion, and motion-control systems for situations where performance genuinely matters. The business has engineering barriers, certification barriers, and long program cycles. In fiscal 2025, the company delivered record sales, profit, and free cash flow. In Q2 fiscal 2026, it raised full-year sales and adjusted EPS guidance again and lifted its twelve-month backlog to a record $3.3 billion. The problems are equally clear: first, the 2025 annual report disclosed a material weakness in internal control related to long-term aftermarket service contracts in commercial aircraft, and the company revised historical financial statements for 2023-2025; second, cash-flow quality has improved, but long-term free cash flow conversion is not yet stable and remains sensitive to working-capital release; third, the current share price implies roughly 42.2x trailing PE, 34.2x forward PE, 22.9x EV/EBITDA, and 38.1x P/FCF, already pricing in a large amount of operating improvement. For a value investor who is balanced but conservative and wants to hold for more than ten years, this looks more like “an emerging good business at a not-cheap price” than an obvious undervaluation.

Is there a margin of safety at the current price: no. Based on the midpoint of the company's 2026 guidance, adjusted EPS is about $10.60. Applying the company's 60% free cash flow conversion rate implies 2026 free cash flow of only around $200 million. Against the current market capitalization of about $11.94 billion, the forward free cash flow yield is only about 1.7%, clearly below the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield of about 4.47% and below the high-grade corporate bond yield of about 5.49% implied by Moody's Aaa corporate spread of roughly +1.02% over the 10-year Treasury. This means the market is already valuing Moog more like a high-multiple compounder than a conservative value entry point.

Suitable investor type: this is more suitable for quality-growth or industrial-trend investors willing to pay a high valuation for “operating improvement plus long-term compounding expectations.” It is less suitable for conservative long-term value investors whose first requirement is “undervaluation plus margin of safety.”

Key uncertainties: First, whether the material weakness in internal control disclosed in 2025 can truly be remediated during 2026, with no new revenue-recognition or contract-loss issues. Second, whether the improved free cash flow since 2026 reflects structural improvement or only a period effect from customer advances, order timing, and working-capital release. Third, whether the current valuation can be “earned back” through several future years of high growth and high cash returns.

My preliminary judgment: [Fact] the company's fundamentals are clearly stronger than they were three years ago; [Inference] the company is moving from “good technology but average efficiency” toward “good technology with improving efficiency”; [View] but at today's purchase price, the odds are not attractive enough and do not yet satisfy a Buffett-style value investor's requirement for a margin of safety.

Business, Industry, and Competitive Landscape

How does this company actually make money? Moog is essentially a company that makes high-reliability, high-performance, mission-critical motion-control and fluid-control systems. Under the new segment structure in fiscal 2025, its four major businesses were: Space and Defense at $1.113 billion, Military Aircraft at $888 million, Commercial Aircraft at $904 million, and Industrial at $956 million. The revenue mix is fairly balanced, at about 29%, 23%, 23%, and 25% of total sales, respectively. It sells flight control, actuation, propulsion, space components, missile and combat-vehicle controls, data and power transmission, industrial precision controls, and medical-related components and systems. The core charging model remains product sales plus related aftermarket services plus revenue recognized over time for some long-term contracts. This is not a business that makes money from advertising traffic. It makes money from engineering capability, program qualification, quality reliability, and delivery capability.

By customer mix, Moog's important customers include the U.S. government and its prime defense contractors/system integrators, Boeing, OEMs and aviation operators within the Airbus ecosystem, and various industrial and medical-equipment customers. In 2025, the company disclosed that its top five customers together represented about 31% of sales, U.S. government contracts represented 38%, and Boeing alone represented 10%. This means customer concentration is not out of control, but it is not dispersed either. The company clearly depends on several large programs, large customers, and major platforms. In terms of business stickiness, overall aftermarket represented only 14% of total sales in 2025. Within that, aftermarket represented 23% of Military Aircraft segment sales and 37% of Commercial Aircraft segment sales. Moog therefore has some recurring revenue base, but it is not a high-aftermarket-mix model centered on aftermarket pricing power like TransDigm.

The cost structure is not light. The company needs continuous investment in R&D, certification, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and engineering. In 2025, R&D expense was about $94 million, or about 2.4% of sales. Capital expenditures were $145 million, or about 3.8% of sales. Management repeatedly names “pricing + simplification + 80/20 + focused factories + automation” as levers for margin improvement. That actually shows the other side of the business: this is not a light-asset model that collects rent while standing still. It is an engineering and manufacturing company that needs long-term operational improvement.

From the perspective of “can I understand it,” my answer is: yes, but it is not especially simple. You can understand what it sells, who it sells to, and why customers depend on it. But you also have to admit that this company faces a long-cycle, customized, project-based contract system with some over-time revenue recognition, and the material weakness in 2025 came precisely from revenue recognition on long-term aftermarket service contracts in the Commercial Aircraft segment. In other words, the product logic is understandable, but the accounting recognition is not as idiot-proof transparent. If the stock market closed for five years, would I be willing to own this business? At the right price, yes; at the current price, I would not add to the position.

Business understandability score: 3/5.

How should we judge the industry and competitive landscape? Moog does not operate in a single industry. It is a combination of defense/military aircraft + commercial aviation + industrial automation/medical/simulation and test. The long-term base of defense and military aircraft demand is relatively stable. SIPRI data shows that global military expenditure grew 2.9% year over year in real terms in 2025, reaching $2.887 trillion, the 11th consecutive year of growth. Military spending in Europe and Asia grew even faster. Commercial aviation benefits from the long-term recovery in passenger traffic and huge OEM backlogs: IATA expects global passenger traffic to keep growing about 4.9% in 2026; Airbus disclosed that its commercial aircraft backlog reached 8,754 aircraft at the end of 2025, with widebody backlog also at a record; Boeing's 2025-2044 Commercial Market Outlook continues to point to expansion in the long-term fleet and services market. In short, Moog's long-term aerospace demand backdrop is not poor.

But the industry has two sides. First, aerospace is an industry with high barriers, long cycles, and infrequent supplier switching. Second, it is often constrained by OEM production ramp-ups, supply-chain bottlenecks, military-budget appropriation cycles, and program timing. The Industrial segment is more obviously cyclical. The company itself notes that demand for industrial products depends on capital spending, the pace of technology upgrades, economic conditions, and oil and gas prices. Moog is therefore not a purely defensive company. It is a hybrid business with meaningful cyclical exposure. It is closer to a suboptimal business model in a good industry plus differentiated niche capabilities than to the best model in the best industry.

On competition, the company does not list a long roster of specific public-company competitors, but it clearly acknowledges that aerospace and industrial markets are highly competitive, and that many competitors in industrial and medical markets are larger, more diversified, and better resourced. Aerospace suppliers are also continuing to consolidate to win long-term single-source positions. Combining the company's historical filings with comparable companies, the market usually treats Parker-Hannifin, Woodward, HEICO, TransDigm, and Curtiss-Wright as reference points from different angles: Parker is a stronger diversified industrial platform; Woodward is comparable in aero engines and control systems; HEICO and TransDigm are usually stronger in aviation aftermarket and capital allocation. Compared with these companies, Moog's market position looks more like an important participant in several key niche tracks than the strongest pricing power in the overall value chain.

Industry attractiveness score: 3/5. The aerospace and defense side is good, while the industrial side is ordinary. Long-term demand is acceptable, but cyclicality and program volatility remain.

Moat, Management, and Capital Allocation

Does it really have a moat? My judgment is: yes, but it is not wide; it is more of an “engineering and certification moat” than a consumer-brand or network-effect moat. The company states that key competitive factors include product quality, reliability, price, design and engineering capability, product development, compliance with customer specifications, timely delivery, and distribution/service capability. This means its competitive advantages come from technology, process know-how, program track record, system integration, certifications, and customer embedding, rather than mass-market brand power. The company has a global patent portfolio, but it also states clearly that no single patent is materially important to the overall business. Only some patents in the medical product portfolio are more meaningful. Put differently, Moog's IP is not the type that locks up an industry through exclusive patents.

Broken down by moat source, I would judge it this way: Brand advantage: weak to moderate. It has no brand in the minds of ordinary consumers, but it has credibility in engineering procurement and defense/aerospace platforms. Cost advantage: moderately weak. The company uses simplification and 80/20 to improve efficiency, but it is not a naturally low-cost leader. Scale advantage: moderate. It has scale and experience in several niches, but overall scale is still smaller than larger diversified industrial and aerospace-defense platforms. Network effects: almost none. Switching costs: moderate to strong. Once it is designed into a military aircraft, commercial aircraft, missile, or space platform, switching suppliers is not easy. Channel advantage: moderate. More precisely, it is an advantage from program embedding and certified positions. Patent/license/regulatory barriers: moderate to strong. Aviation and defense certifications, export controls, and program credentials all raise the difficulty of replication. Data advantage: weak. Corporate culture/operating capability: moderate and improving. Capital allocation capability: moderate; it has not yet proven itself to be a top-tier compounder.

What I value more is the evidence of operating improvement over the past three years. At the 2023 Investor Day, management set targets using 2022 as the base year: 5%-7% sales CAGR, an average annual 100bps improvement in adjusted operating margin, 15%-20% adjusted EPS CAGR, and 75%-100% FCF conversion in FY25/FY26. By 2025, management said in the annual report that, compared with 2022, sales CAGR had reached 8%, tariff-adjusted margin had improved by 110bps per year on average, adjusted EPS CAGR was 16%, and broad deployment of 80/20 had allowed sales to rise 27% while headcount increased only 4% and facility footprint decreased 8%. This shows that, at least in operating discipline, management is not merely making slogans. It has delivered.

Is the moat getting wider? My answer is: slightly, but mainly through better execution rather than stronger structural dominance. 80/20, focused factories, automation, and pricing are good methods, but in essence they pull the company from “complex and inefficient” back toward “reasonably efficient.” That can move margins closer to those of strong industrial companies. It does not mean Moog has become a powerful aftermarket pricing machine like TransDigm, or a long-proven capital-allocation compounding platform like Parker.

Moat strength score: 3/5.

Is management trustworthy? Is capital allocation rational? Start with the positives. CEO Pat Roche and CFO Jennifer Walter have kept pushing pricing, simplification, platform focus, automation, and small portfolio adjustments since 2023. In Q2 fiscal 2026, the company continued to emphasize “simplification and 80/20” as drivers of efficiency and margin improvement, and it raised full-year sales and adjusted EPS guidance. The company also maintains share-ownership requirements for directors and executives: the CEO must hold company stock equal to 5x annual salary, and other executives 3x. Pat Roche himself discloses meaningful holdings of A and B shares, and directors and executives together hold 8.2% of Class B. In addition, under the dual-class structure, Class B carries 1 vote per share while Class A carries 0.1 vote per share, and most B shares are held by employees or employee benefit plans. To some extent, that reinforces a long-term orientation.

Now the negatives, which are the core reason I do not score management highly. The 2025 annual report clearly disclosed that management identified a material weakness in the design and operating effectiveness of controls over specific long-term aftermarket service revenue contracts in the Commercial Aircraft segment, with insufficient controls over the completeness and accuracy of key inputs. EY therefore issued an adverse opinion on ICFR for fiscal 2025. The company also said that, while preparing the 2025 annual report, it identified misstatements in prior financial statements involving input errors in estimated costs to complete long-term aftermarket service contracts in Commercial Aircraft and underestimation of certain warranty costs. The company judged these misstatements not material to any single prior period or year, but correcting them all in 2025 would have had a material effect on the 2025 financial statements, so it revised 2023, 2024, and quarterly data for 2024/2025. This is not fatal, but it materially lowers my confidence in the verifiability of the financials.

On capital allocation, the company has generally used a balanced approach in recent years: reinvestment + small acquisitions/portfolio adjustments + dividends + moderate buybacks. In fiscal 2025, it paid $36.43 million in dividends, repurchased $142.7 million of treasury shares, completed acquisitions including COTSWORKS, and sold some businesses/assets. The share count has not been materially diluted. It has slightly contracted: diluted weighted-average shares fell from 32.359 million in 2024 to 32.083 million in 2025, and the diluted share count in H1 2026 was about 32.073 million. This suggests that equity compensation is not out of control and buybacks have not been fully swallowed by dilution. The issue remains: when FCF is still improving and valuation has already risen significantly, continuing to repurchase stock does not automatically equal excellent capital allocation. It shows management is willing to return capital to shareholders, but it does not prove management is exceptional at deciding when to buy and how much value it is buying.

Management and capital allocation score: 3/5. Operating execution adds points; internal-control weakness subtracts points. Overall, this is “above acceptable,” not “unquestionably excellent.”

Financial Quality and Owner Earnings

Start with a very important premise: for parts of 2023-2025 historical data, the revised figures in the 2025 annual report should be used first, rather than simply carrying forward the original figures from the 2024 or 2023 10-K. The company explained in its 2025 annual report that prior financial statements contained misstatements related to long-term aftermarket service contracts and warranty costs in Commercial Aircraft, so it revised 2023, 2024, and several quarters of 2025. In the key financial analysis below, wherever revised data is available, I use the revised basis.

This table shows several critical facts. First, revenue has indeed been growing steadily, rising from $3.036 billion in 2022 to $3.861 billion in 2025, with all four segments contributing to 2025 growth. The company then raised full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $4.335 billion. Second, margin improvement is real. Adjusted operating margin rose from the 2022 Investor Day base of 10.2% to 13.0% in 2025, with a 13.4% target for 2026. Third, cash-flow improvement is factual, but volatility is also obvious: FCF was negative in 2023, only slightly positive in 2024, improved to $128 million in 2025, and only began showing stronger release in 2026. In other words, Moog currently looks more like “cash flow is being repaired” than “a natural cash cow.”

In terms of earnings quality, 2025 net income was $235 million, operating cash flow was $273 million, and free cash flow was $128 million. “Earnings above FCF” does not look extreme. The real issue is that growth consumes a meaningful amount of working capital and capex. The 2025 cash-flow statement shows that inventory still consumed $51.77 million, and accounts receivable plus unbilled receivables also consumed a meaningful amount. Customer advances increased by $81.59 million, helping operating cash flow. In H1 fiscal 2026, operating cash flow was $84.83 million, a huge year-over-year improvement, but it also benefited from an $88.51 million increase in contract advances/progress payments. For long-term value investors, this means not every working-capital release should be treated as permanently distributable cash.

On the balance sheet, at the end of 2025 the company had total assets of $4.426 billion, shareholders' equity of $1.993 billion, and total debt of about $946 million. By Q2 fiscal 2026, total assets had risen to $4.903 billion, shareholders' equity to $2.102 billion, and total debt to $1.240 billion, of which $500 million was classified as current debt due within one year. Looking only at leverage, net debt at the end of 2025 was about $884 million, roughly 1.6x estimated 2025 EBITDA, which is not dangerous. But by Q2 fiscal 2026, the debt maturity structure clearly deserves closer monitoring, especially short-term debt and refinancing arrangements. The 2025 annual report disclosed a U.S. revolving credit facility of $1.1 billion, plus a $400 million expansion option, which provides a liquidity buffer. My judgment: the balance sheet is still controllable, but it is no longer suitable for materially higher leverage.

For returns, using rough calculations based on GAAP net income and average shareholders' equity/average total assets, Moog's recent ROE has been roughly 11%-12%+, and ROA about 4.5%-5.5%+. Using GAAP operating profit after tax and average invested capital, ROIC in 2025 was roughly around 13%. These are not poor results, but they are not exceptionally outstanding. Third-party market data gives a trailing-twelve-month ROIC of about 10.6% and ROE of about 14.4%, broadly consistent with the judgment of “good, but not a top-tier compounding platform.”

Are profits real cash profits or accounting profits? My answer is: at present, it is closer to “real profits exist, but cash conversion still needs observation.” I do not see evidence strong enough to suggest financial fraud. The company also acknowledged and revised the misstatements, and the CEO/CFO still stated that the financial statements were fairly presented in all material respects. But the material weakness itself means you cannot read Moog's financial statements as casually as you would read Coca-Cola's. For conservative investors, this matters.

How should Owner Earnings be viewed? Using the most conservative, least flattering method and treating all capital expenditures as maintenance capex, the lower bound of 2025 owner earnings equals free cash flow, about $128 million. Referencing management's 2026 guidance, adjusted EPS of $10.60 implies adjusted net income of about $339 million. Multiplying by the 60% FCF conversion rate gives a 2026 “distributable cash capacity checked against the company's own framework” of roughly $200 million. On the other hand, a rough trailing-twelve-month calculation through Q2 2026 puts free cash flow as high as $310 million, but that clearly benefits from current-period working-capital release and higher customer advances, and I do not think it should be fully capitalized. Therefore, as a conservative Owner Earnings estimate, I prefer a range of $190 million to $210 million. Against the current market capitalization of about $11.94 billion, that equals 57-63x Owner Earnings. On an enterprise value basis, third-party market data gives EV/FCF of about 41.8x. None of this is cheap.

Valuation, Intrinsic Value, and Margin of Safety

Method 1: Owner Earnings discounted cash flow

I use a conservative equity value approach, with no additional assumption of aggressive leverage and without fully capitalizing the unusually strong working-capital release in H1 2026. The core assumptions are as follows: [Assumption] the conservative case starts from Owner Earnings of $190 million, grows 4% annually for the next ten years, uses a 10% discount rate, and assumes 2% terminal growth; [Assumption] the base case starts from $210 million, grows 6% annually for the next ten years, uses a 9% discount rate, and assumes 2.5% terminal growth; [Assumption] the optimistic case starts from $230 million, grows 7% annually for the next ten years, uses an 8.5% discount rate, and assumes 3% terminal growth. Under these assumptions, the point estimates are roughly $87 / $135 / $184 per share. Considering that FCF conversion could continue to improve in 2026-2027, I modestly lift the valuation ranges to produce more practical investment ranges. The weakness of this method is that a small upward change in the Owner Earnings starting point or terminal assumptions would move valuation materially; even so, supporting today's $373 share price still requires very aggressive long-term cash-flow assumptions. [Inference] This is the fundamental reason I believe there is no margin of safety at the current price.

Under this framework, the conservative intrinsic value range is $90-130; the reasonable intrinsic value range is $130-190; and the optimistic intrinsic value range is $190-260. The current share price of about $373.33 is still about 44% above the high end of the optimistic range and about 96% above the high end of the base range. Put differently, unless you believe Moog can sustain very high growth for the next decade, substantially improve FCF conversion, and still receive a high valuation from the market, it is hard to call the current price a “value-investing price.”

Method 2: Relative valuation

The current market places Moog at a very expensive level. Third-party real-time statistics show Moog at roughly 42.2x trailing PE, 34.2x forward PE, 5.63x PB, 22.9x EV/EBITDA, and 38.1x P/FCF. For comparison, Parker-Hannifin's EV/EBITDA is about 20.9x, Woodward's about 29.3x, HEICO's about 30.6x, and TransDigm's about 20.2x. Among these companies, Parker, HEICO, and TransDigm generally have either stronger capital-allocation reputations, stronger aftermarket attributes, or more robust free-cash-flow histories. In other words, Moog's valuation has already moved close to or into the pricing range of high-quality compounders, but its cash-flow history and financial verifiability have not fully reached the same level.

One point deserves emphasis: you cannot conclude Moog is cheap just because peers are also expensive. The more reasonable conclusion is that many high-quality companies in this sector are being priced at high valuations by the market. Moog's operating improvement is clear, but it has not yet proven that it deserves to enter the top-tier “compounder club” with no valuation discount.

Method 3: Asset/liquidation value

As of Q2 fiscal 2026, shareholders' equity was about $2.102 billion. Goodwill was $874 million and intangible assets were $61 million, totaling about $934 million. Using a current market-cap share count of roughly 31.98 million shares, book value per share is about $65.7, while tangible book value per share is only about $36.5. Third-party real-time data gives P/TBV of about 10.1x, consistent with this estimate. My inference is that even if you assign some franchise value to inventory, contract assets, and engineering capability, an asset-based approach still struggles to support a share price above $300.     Positive narrative inflection points: internal controls are fully remediated and verified by KPMG + FCF conversion stabilizes at 70%+ + backlog converts with high quality; negative inflection points: another revision or weak FCF, with the 42x multiple compressing toward 20–25x and the report's worst-case 40%–60% drawdown. The honest conclusion: buying today means taking on the market's optimistic expectations, with negative odds.
