The current price of $466 corresponds to 15.5x Owner Earnings and a 6.4% FCF yield, less than 2 percentage points above the 4.57% 10-year Treasury — a thin margin of safety. Ideal buy at $390–430, with a 35%–50% permanent drawdown under a compound bad scenario. A good business; wait for cheaper.

In a sentence, Lockheed Martin is a defense prime-contractor business that is easy to understand, backed by durable long-term demand, and generally high in cash-flow quality—but at today's price of roughly $466/share, it looks more like a "decent-quality, fairly-valued asset with a thin margin of safety" than the kind of "significantly undervalued" opportunity that would let a conservative value investor build a large position with ease.

From an owner's perspective, Lockheed Martin's business framework is clear: it centers on fighter jets, missile defense, rotary-wing/mission systems, and space systems, serving the U.S. government and allied governments. Year-end 2025 backlog was roughly $193.6 billion, and it still stood at $186.4 billion in Q1 2026, giving strong revenue visibility. Is there a margin of safety at the current price? Not obviously. On a conservative owner-earnings basis, LMT's 2025 free cash flow was about $6.9 billion, and the current share price implies an equity free-cash-flow yield of roughly 6%–6.5%; meanwhile, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was about 4.57% on 2026-05-21. That spread is not unattractive, but for a defense contractor exposed to program losses and to budget and policy sensitivity, I consider it still too narrow.

On investor fit, LMT suits long-term value investors who can accept a concentrated government customer base, program-estimate volatility, and a holding horizon of 10 years or more; it is less suited to those chasing a high-growth narrative or to short-term investors who watch only quarterly EPS.

The greatest uncertainties cluster in three areas: first, whether the F-35 ecosystem and its subsequent upgrades, deliveries, and sustainment improve; second, whether fixed-price/development programs again produce large reach-forward losses; third, whether incremental defense budgets actually convert into high-return orders, rather than more aggressive capacity investment and lower procurement returns.

Understanding the Business and Industry Landscape

Is this a business I can understand? Yes, and to a high degree. Lockheed Martin currently operates in four business segments: Aeronautics (military aircraft), Missiles and Fire Control, Rotary and Mission Systems, and Space (space and strategic systems). In 2025, the four segments generated revenue of $30.257 billion, $14.450 billion, $17.312 billion, and $13.029 billion, respectively. The largest program is still the F-35; the company discloses that F-35 accounted for about 27% of consolidated sales in 2025. This kind of business does not make money by "selling a one-time consumer product," but by continuously monetizing long-cycle R&D, production, upgrades, maintenance, and follow-on support services.

Who are the customers, and how does it charge? The core customers are essentially the U.S. government and allied governments. In its 2025 10-K, the company states clearly that it works primarily with the various U.S. military services, NASA, and other national governments; on a 2023 customer breakdown, the U.S. government contributed $49.423 billion, international customers $17.644 billion, and U.S. commercial and other just $504 million, which illustrates the high customer concentration well. The pricing model is based mainly on government contracts, including both fixed-price contracts and cost-reimbursement contracts; the company discloses that about 40% of 2025 sales came from cost-reimbursement contracts, with most of the rest still fixed-price and milestone-based payment arrangements.

Is the revenue recurring, stable, and predictable? Stability is higher than ordinary manufacturing but lower than utilities and high-stickiness software. The strengths come from: first, long defense demand cycles; second, continuous demand from aftermarket support, upgrades, munitions replenishment, training, and sustainment; and third, an extremely high backlog. The company's year-end 2025 segment backlogs were: Aeronautics $59.435 billion, MFC $46.650 billion, RMS $47.715 billion, and Space $39.822 billion; by the end of Q1 2026 total backlog still stood at $186.427 billion. This means that as long as budgets and execution do not spin out of control, medium-term revenue visibility is quite strong.

Cost structure, dependencies, and commercial transparency. This is a business with fairly light capital spending but extremely high engineering complexity. 2025 capital expenditure was $1.649 billion, below depreciation and amortization of $1.687 billion, indicating that sustaining operations does not depend on very high tangible capital reinvestment; but it is highly dependent on senior engineers, security clearances, long-chain suppliers, scarce materials, and government budgets and procurement processes. The company also states plainly that constrained supply of rare earths, semiconductors, titanium, and specialty steel, along with inflationary pressure, compliance requirements, and geopolitics, all affect delivery and costs, and these challenges are expected to persist in 2026. As a defense prime, this business is "structurally understandable" but "not simple to execute."

If the stock market closed for 5 years, would I be willing to hold? At a lower entry price, yes; at the current price, I am willing to "hold a position already bought," but I would not rush to add aggressively. The reason is not that the business is bad, but that although it is understandable and highly visible, it is not the kind of "mindless compounding machine" that never has to worry about large program losses. In 2025 both Aeronautics and RMS saw profit dragged down by program issues, and in Q1 2026 the F-16, C-130, CH-53K, and Seahawk programs again showed unfavorable profit adjustments, showing that the income statement still carries the volatility characteristic of engineering-project businesses.

Business understandability score: 4.5/5. The business framework is clear, the demand side is clear, and the customers are clear; the difficulty lies in contract accounting and program-execution cadence, not in the business model itself.

Industry and competitive landscape. Today's global military-spending environment is broadly favorable to leading defense contractors. SIPRI data show that global military spending reached $2.887 trillion in 2025; NATO has also disclosed that in 2025 all allies met or exceeded the 2%-of-GDP defense spending target, with European allies and Canada growing defense spending 20% year over year in 2025. The U.S. Department of Defense has already released FY2026 budget materials. In other words, this is not a declining industry but a mature one driven by geopolitics—cyclically volatile but with strengthening medium-to-long-term demand resilience.

Main competitors and the company's position. The main competitors the company itself lists in its 10-K include Boeing, General Dynamics, L3Harris, Northrop Grumman, and RTX. Lockheed Martin has long ranked in the top tier of the U.S. government contracting system: with $75 billion in 2025 sales, its F-35, PAC-3, THAAD, Aegis, Trident, GPS III, and Orion programs span air, space, sea, and air-and-missile-defense—multiple critical domains. Unlike RTX, which has greater exposure to pure commercial aviation, LMT is a leader with higher "high-end defense purity." But that also means it depends more on defense budgets and the government procurement ecosystem.

Industry attractiveness score: 4/5. The demand side is excellent, barriers to entry are high, and the profit pool is concentrated, but customer concentration, strong political sensitivity, and coexisting technology and execution risks keep it from a perfect score.

Moat and Management

There is a moat, but its form is more a combination of "institutions, credentials, performance track record, scale, and relationships" than a consumer-brand moat. A brand advantage does exist in defense, but it is not a consumer-facing brand—it is a reputation brand for "whether you can deliver nation-level complex systems on time." Programs like F-35, Aegis, THAAD, PAC-3, Trident, and GPS III are themselves proof of credentials and a history of delivery. At the same time, the truly core moat lies in: security-clearance credentials, long-term customer relationships, experience with government procurement and cost-accounting systems, systems-integration capability, the upgrade/sustainment base created by the existing installed fleet, and a highly complex supply chain and manufacturing capability. These cannot be replicated in a single year just by throwing money at them.

On your ten-item checklist: Brand advantage: yes, but a defense-reputation brand; cost advantage: limited, more accurately a "scale and learning-curve advantage"; scale advantage: yes; network effects: weak; switching costs: strong, especially for military customers with extremely high compatibility requirements for in-service platforms and systems; channel advantage: yes, because government relationships and procurement credentials are themselves a channel; patents/licenses/regulatory barriers: very strong; data advantage: medium, not a platform-type data network; corporate culture/operating capability: medium-to-strong, though the program losses of the past two years show it is not flawless; capital-allocation capability: medium-to-strong.

Is this moat widening, stable, or narrowing? My judgment: broadly stable, locally under pressure. The stable part lies in global rearmament, rising allied air-and-missile-defense demand, and U.S. domestic industrial policy that increasingly emphasizes "trusted capacity" and a "munitions industrial base," which actually reinforces the position of large contractors. The pressured part lies in: first, new defense-tech companies such as SpaceX and Anduril are eroding some traditional segments; second, U.S. procurement reform increasingly emphasizes low cost, rapid iteration, and unmanned systems; third, the technology and sustainment controversies around mega-programs like F-35 weaken the myth of the traditional "giant-system program." SpaceX's continued strengthening of its position in 2025 national-security launch contracts is one reminder.

Can it resist inflation and recession? To a degree, yes. Government contracts include cost-reimbursement, price-adjustment, and milestone-payment mechanisms, and the customers are not ordinary commercial customers, so a macro recession hits demand less directly than it does civilian durables; but it cannot fully pass through inflation and supply-chain pressure, especially during the fixed-price phase. The program losses in 2025 and Q1 2026 prove that "high barriers" do not equal "high pricing power."

Were the past high margins a structural advantage or a cyclical dividend? Both, but primarily a structural advantage. MFC's high margins come more from its long-term systems position in air-and-missile-defense and tactical missiles; Space's better margins also have a structural component. Aeronautics and RMS are more easily hurt by individual program adjustments. From 2023 to 2025, the Aeronautics margin fell from 10.3% to 6.9%, and RMS from 11.5% to 7.6%; conversely, after MFC's margin dropped to 3.3% in 2024 due to a classified program loss, it recovered to 13.8% in 2025. This looks more like "a very deep moat, but single-point program losses temporarily contaminate the margin."

Moat-strength score: 3.8/5. It is not a Coca-Cola-style moat, but within a defense industry heavy in regulation, credentials, and systems integration, LMT still rates as very strong.

Is management trustworthy and capital allocation rational? On balance positive, but keep some caution. The positive evidence: in the 2025 executive annual incentives, 70% was tied to financial targets and 30% to strategic/operational targets; the financial metrics included sales, segment operating profit, and free cash flow; the company also clearly discloses that, because of the 2025 program losses, the payout corresponding to the segment operating-profit metric fell to 0%, and the compensation committee made no additional discretionary upward adjustment for the NEOs. This is more respectable than many companies that "pay bonuses regardless of poor performance." The CEO's base salary has been unchanged since 2021, and the CEO/Chairman is required to hold 6 times annual salary in stock, with all current serving NEOs meeting or on track to meet the ownership thresholds.

Capital allocation: shareholder-friendly, but not every dollar is spent perfectly. In 2025 the company generated operating cash flow of $8.557 billion and capital expenditure of $1.649 billion; on cash uses, it paid $3.131 billion in dividends, $3.0 billion in buybacks, and $642 million in debt repayment during the year. On a weighted-average share-count basis, basic shares fell from 276.4 million in 2021 to 232.7 million in 2025, a roughly 16% reduction over five years, and buybacks did contribute to per-share value. The issue is that LMT was not always in an "extremely undervalued" state during 2021–2025, so while the buybacks were reasonable, they were not necessarily always "excellent." More importantly, given the declining earnings visibility on several programs, buybacks should not take priority over improving execution quality and a more robust balance sheet.

Management and capital-allocation score: 3.6/5. I give it above average, but not a high score. The reason is simple: the compensation discipline is done well, and buybacks and dividends continue the shareholder-friendly stance, but frequent program losses show that "operating and bidding discipline" still has room to be repaired.

Financial Quality and Owner Earnings

The table below is compiled from Lockheed Martin's two 10-Ks for 2025 and 2023. Because some 2024 income-statement line items were not fully laid out in the materials extracted this time, I prioritize in the table the data that most affect an owner's judgment: sales, cash flow, capital expenditure, free cash flow, share count, and the balance sheet. For individual items such as gross margin and 2024 net income that were not separately extracted, I explicitly mark them as "not separately extracted."

A few important judgments. First, profit is real cash profit, not purely accounting profit. From 2021 to 2025, LMT's operating cash flow was consistently stronger than net income, and especially so in 2025: operating cash flow was $8.557 billion, capital expenditure only $1.649 billion, and free cash flow $6.908 billion. This means that even when the income statement is dragged down by accounting items such as pension settlements and estimate adjustments, the company can still convert a large share of profit into real distributable cash.

Second, growth does not require extremely heavy capital investment. 2025 depreciation and amortization was $1.687 billion and capital expenditure $1.649 billion, overall showing the "Capex ≈ D&A" characteristic of a mature industrial company; it is not the kind of model that must keep raising heavy-asset investment to sustain growth. This is why the company can balance high dividends, high buybacks, and continued investment in capacity expansion.

Third, the balance sheet is bearable, but not so ample that it can be entirely ignored. By year-end 2025, total net debt was $21.7 billion, of which long-term net debt was $20.532 billion; shareholders' equity was only $6.721 billion, largely depressed by years of buybacks and AOCI, so both ROE and P/B are distorted. For this kind of company, the balance sheet's real safety is seen more in "cash flow covering debt" than in book net assets. Using 2025 free cash flow of $6.9 billion as a rough gauge, net debt/FCF is roughly 2.5–2.6x, which I consider manageable but not loose.

How to view ROE, ROIC, and ROA? ROE has almost no analytical value for LMT, because shareholders' equity is significantly depressed by years of buybacks; even a very high ROE would not mean the business is truly better than peers. More meaningful are a "rough ROIC" and a "cash return rate." Using an approximate 2025 after-tax operating profit and a net-debt-plus-equity base for a rough estimate, LMT's ROIC most likely remains in the high double digits, but this is mixed with a capital base compressed by contract liabilities, pensions, and buybacks, and cannot be mechanically compared to consumer stocks. My judgment: LMT's true return on capital is better than that of most industrial companies, but not as exaggerated as the surface financial ratios suggest. This is an "inference on top of facts," not the company's disclosed measure.

Working capital and accounting risk. One advantage for LMT is a degree of "customer prepayment/contract liability" character. Year-end 2025 contract liabilities were $11.440 billion, exceeding a large part of the combined pressure of receivables and inventory, which amounts to government customers providing a kind of "float" for operations. But this does not eliminate program-estimate risk. In 2025 Aeronautics added about $395 million of additional reach-forward loss on a classified program; RMS recognized about $665 million of reach-forward losses combined on the CMHP and TUHP programs; and in Q1 2026 the F-16, C-130, CH-53K, and Seahawk again showed unfavorable profit adjustments. For LMT, what most warrants close watching is not receivable bad debt, but the estimate discipline on long-term fixed-price or development programs.

Owner Earnings estimate. Applying a Buffett-style "owner earnings" approach, I would take a conservative but workable calculation: Owner earnings ≈ operating cash flow − maintenance capital expenditure. Because LMT's 2025 Capex and D&A are broadly equal, and most Capex relates to equipment, facilities, and IT/internal software—hard to split precisely between maintenance and growth—I adopt the most conservative assumption: treat all capital expenditure as maintenance capital expenditure. Then 2025 owner earnings ≈ $8.557 billion − $1.649 billion = $6.908 billion. If we further consider that 2025 had $479 million of non-cash pension settlement expense that depressed GAAP profit without affecting the year's operating cash flow, then from a "true distributable capacity" angle, LMT's normalized owner earnings could even be slightly above $6.9 billion. But in valuation, I would rather keep using a range of $6.6–6.9 billion than reach higher.

How many times owner earnings is the current valuation? At roughly $466/share and about 230.08 million shares, market cap is about $107.3 billion; against 2025 conservative owner earnings of $6.9 billion, the current share price corresponds to about 15.5x owner earnings, an equivalent yield of about 6.4%. That is not expensive, but it is certainly no cigar-butt bargain.

Intrinsic Value, Relative Valuation, and Margin of Safety

First, let me separate fact, assumption, inference, and opinion. Fact: 2025 free cash flow was $6.908 billion; for 2026 the company reaffirmed full-year free-cash-flow guidance of $6.5–6.8 billion, sales of $77.5–80.0 billion, and diluted EPS of $29.35–30.25. Assumption: I take $6.6–6.8 billion as the starting point for sustainable owner earnings over the next few years, to avoid overstating. Inference: the resulting intrinsic-value range is roughly $350–720/share, with the genuinely actionable "fair band" narrower, roughly $480–540/share. Opinion: the current price is closer to "fair-to-not-cheap" than to "significantly undervalued."

Method 1: owner-earnings discounting. The valuations below are all on an equity-cash-flow basis and do not again deduct net debt.

This neutral scenario is not aggressive: it merely assumes LMT can deliver on its 2026 guidance and grow long-term at a low-to-mid single-digit rate while maintaining the cash-distribution capacity of a mature defense leader. The conservative scenario assumes that the high global military-spending boom does not translate into high earnings quality and that program losses still appear cyclically.

Method 2: relative valuation. The comparison below uses current share prices and each company's most recent complete fiscal year of financial data, so it is for cross-sectional judgment rather than a substitute for a broker terminal's precise figures. Current prices for LMT, RTX, Northrop, and General Dynamics come from the most recent available quotes; the P/E, P/FCF, P/B, and EV/EBITDA are mostly my rough estimates based on annual reports and current prices. Because RTX 2024 is still affected by special events, its multiples are the least comparable.

My view: if you look at "cash flow per share / owner return on the enterprise," LMT is actually better value than quite a few defense peers; but if you look at "earnings stability" and "execution volatility," it is not cheap enough to ignore the program risk in Aeronautics and RMS. In other words, it is not significantly undervalued, but among mature defense blue chips its valuation is not outrageous either.

Method 3: asset or liquidation value. For LMT, the asset method is not suitable as the primary valuation method. Year-end 2025 shareholders' equity was only $6.721 billion, while goodwill was $11.314 billion and intangibles $1.887 billion, so tangible net assets are approximately negative after removing them. This means: first, LMT is not an "asset-cheap" stock; second, its value comes mainly from future ongoing cash flow, not liquidation value; third, if your margin-of-safety logic relies on net assets as a backstop, this name does not fit your preference.

The final value range and price band: Conservative intrinsic-value range: $350–390/share. Fair intrinsic-value range: $480–540/share. Optimistic intrinsic-value range: $650–720/share. At roughly $466/share, this is a clear premium to conservative value and a modest discount to near-parity to the fair-value range. By my standard, the required margin of safety is at least 20%; therefore the more ideal buy range is roughly $390–430/share, the acceptable holding range roughly $430–520/share, and above $580–600/share I would lean toward viewing it as "clearly overvalued."

Margin-of-safety conclusion: insufficient. The most fragile assumption is not "whether military spending will grow," but "whether growth can be delivered into loss-free cash flow at an acceptable rate of return." If growth falls short of expectations but FCF can still hold around $6.0 billion, the investment will probably not do badly; if margins are again dragged down by fixed-price programs, or the 2026 recovery fails to materialize, then current buyers' returns will quickly degrade into "slightly better than bonds, but bearing significant program risk." For a more conservative investor, that is not enough.

Risks, Bear Case, and Opportunity Cost

The most important risk is not share-price volatility, but permanent loss of capital. The most realistic permanent-loss paths include: a weakening of F-35 share and roadmap, fixed-price programs continuing to form large losses, supply-chain and scarce-material problems lengthening delivery timelines, budget growth accompanied by earnings constraints or worse procurement terms, and new defense-tech companies wresting some high-value-added segments from traditional prime contractors. GAO's 2025 report on the F-35 flagged delivery delays and future development-management issues; Reuters has also reported on F-35 upgrade and engine-supply problems, as well as F-35 availability and sustainment controversies in 2025.

The strongest bear case. One very forceful bearish logic: LMT looks like a "hard beneficiary of rising military spending," but the reality may be "strong demand, hard execution, diluted returns." Especially after the surge in missile and missile-defense demand, the multi-year framework agreements the company has signed require it to invest in capacity first; if future procurement cadence, budget appropriations, or program economics fall short, these investments may not all deliver ideal returns. In other words, LMT could fall into the trap of "a good track with high demand, but the manufacturing and contract ends hand the excess returns to the customer."

Which investors are bearish, and what might they see? Bears typically watch three things: first, the F-35 is too large and accumulating technical debt, making it more vulnerable to budget and substitute-technology shocks in the future; second, in the face of unmanned systems, software-defined warfare, and mass consumption of low-cost munitions, traditional large platforms may gradually lose their optimal resource-allocation position; third, LMT's reported program losses are no longer a single event but indicate persistent pressure in its bidding, supply-chain, and execution systems. This perspective may not ultimately hold, but it deserves respect.

What facts would overturn the current "watch, wait for a better price" judgment, or force me to admit I am wrong? If two of the following three appear, I would clearly revise my judgment downward: first, the F-35 sales share and related backlog decline clearly, without missile/space high-return businesses adequately filling in; second, cumulative fixed-price program losses on the order of several billion dollars appear again over the next 2–3 years; third, operating cash flow and free cash flow remain persistently below $5.0–5.5 billion even amid the military-spending boom, indicating that demand growth has not converted into high-quality cash returns. Conversely, if the company proves during 2026–2028 that it can steadily deliver annual free cash flow of $6.5–7.5 billion while reducing large program losses, then my valuation midpoint would move up.

Comparison with other opportunities. Against the strongest peers, LMT does not have GD's low profit volatility, NOC's straightforward capital structure, or RTX's greater exposure to a commercial-aviation recovery; but it remains very strong on shareholder-return discipline, FCF generation, and missile/air-and-missile-defense hooks. Compared with an S&P 500 ETF, LMT's advantages are a valuation closer to cash flow and a more defensive business; its disadvantages are customer concentration, higher execution risk, and consequences of a single-company decision error far larger than for an index.
