Its strengths are the sequencing ecosystem, profitability, and capital-return discipline. Its weakness is that single-cell and spatial are not its historical foundation, but extensions beyond existing sequencing. 10x is suing Illumina's single-cell kits and spatial-technology programs for infringement, which itself shows the two companies have begun to overlap directly. Why would users choose 10x instead of Illumina? Because 10x offers a complete single-cell/spatial experience from sample preparation to workflow to analysis. Why might users switch to Illumina? Because if the sequencing platform and downstream analysis become more tightly integrated, Illumina can extend its existing control in sequencing upstream into sample preparation.
Bruker represents another type of competitor. It brought GeoMx, CosMx, AtoMx, and nCounter in through the acquisition of NanoString in one step, rather than starting from the single-cell workflow. It is using a larger analytical-instrument platform to flank spatial omics. Bruker generated Q1 2026 revenue of USD 823.4 million, up 2.7% year over year, but organic revenue actually declined 4.4%, while non-GAAP operating margin was 10.2%. This shows that it has not escaped weakness in the current research-tools environment either. Bruker's threat to 10x is that it can sell spatial analysis as part of a broader product portfolio and tolerate longer cycles and lower margins in competition. It is not that Bruker can replicate Chromium. For customers, Bruker/NanoString is attractive because it offers a more complete multimodal spatial and pathology path. For 10x, the problem is that such large companies do not need every business line to make money immediately.
Bio-Techne is more worth watching, but should not be simplistically treated as "the same type" of company. It earns money from a portfolio of antibodies, proteins, diagnostics, and spatial biology tools, rather than starting from single-cell. What really matters is that it operates spatial biology inside a larger, already profitable tools system. In the first three quarters of fiscal 2026, Bio-Techne's Diagnostics and Spatial Biology segment had improved its operating margin to 12.1%. What does that show? Spatial biology itself is not necessarily an "advanced technology that will lose money forever." 10x has simply chosen a more aggressive, more front-loaded, and more capital-consuming approach. For customers, the Bio-Techne/ACD camp is often closer to tissue pathology, RNA in situ, and clinical translation. 10x's real position in this ecosystem, in my view, is "a platform-style leader, but only within the workflows where it is strongest." It remains a leader in single-cell sample preparation, droplet-based workflows, and the resulting consumables pull-through. In spatial omics, it is a strong challenger trying to redraw the boundary again with Atera. In capital markets, however, it does not have the mature platform stability associated with Illumina. The money it directly competes for is the portion of research budgets originally scattered across single-cell, spatial, and multimodal validation. The most likely threat to its profit pool is either larger platform companies turning point technologies into "ecosystem add-on features," or smaller companies taking parts of the experimental flow with lighter capital and lower upfront barriers.
Current Fundamentals and Valuation
What Happened in the Last Four Quarters
Looking at the last four quarters, 10x's operating condition is somewhat better than the headline suggests and more fragile than the management narrative implies. In Q1 2026, consumables grew 12.5% year over year and spatial consumables grew about 31%, showing that installed users are still consuming and that the workflow and analysis stickiness accumulated by the company has not been lost. Add the fact that Atera does offer a rare combination of whole-transcriptome coverage, single-cell sensitivity, and high throughput. If it can prove that it is truly a device for large-sample research and translational research, rather than a demonstration-level product, the 10x story can shift back from "Chromium slowdown" to "second platform restarts growth."
The strongest bear argument is that the "second platform" still exists mainly in the product brochure, not in large installed numbers or the income statement. Management itself has acknowledged that Atera's launch will affect the order cadence for current spatial products, that Q2 and Q3 may decline sequentially, and that only about 40 units will ship for the full year. At the same time, the company has high revenue exposure to U.S. academic and government research funding. In other words, 10x is making its largest platform transition at its most fragile point: the new platform has not contributed much revenue, while old-platform orders may be temporarily delayed by customers.

The meaningful questions are threefold: first, whether the sales multiple has already overdrawn Atera's probability of success; second, after looking through cash flow, whether the current market cap is built on real free cash flow; third, compared with peers, whether the company has been given an undeserved premium automatically because of its "high technology content." The valuation scenarios below are under the research framework and are not investment advice.
At the cash-flow-through level, 10x's accounting profit has long differed from shareholder profit. From 2021 to 2024, the company had cumulative net losses of about USD 661.9 million, but cumulative operating cash outflow was only about USD 63.40 million. It is logical that the market gives it a sales multiple above traditional tools stocks but below the platform-frenzy period. The only question is whether that premium should continue.
Below is my three-scenario absolute valuation framework. The core assumptions all treat fiscal 2027 as the first year in which Atera commercialization can truly be validated, and convert the current cash position back into equity value.

On that basis, TXG looks more like a "good platform, fairly priced but not cheap." My conclusion on the adequacy of the margin of safety is "not obvious."

Core revenue and consumables represent the base business; spatial consumables and Atera represent the second curve; gross margin and operating cash flow represent the path to profitability; cash position represents the ability to survive and wait; legal factors represent whether the moat continues to monetize. Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Summary
Longitudinally, 10x has genuinely proved three capabilities. First, it can standardize and productize frontier technologies that once belonged only to a few labs, then turn them into repeat-purchase research-tool platforms through software and reagents. Second, it is willing to buy the next technology curve before the core business is fully mature. From buying Spatial Transcriptomics in 2018 to launching Xenium in 2022 and Atera in 2026, the line is coherent. Third, it has produced real results in patent wars. It has not only defended itself, but also turned IP into economic rights that can generate cash.
But these capabilities no longer automatically convert into high valuation today. The reason is simple: capital markets used to reward "technology leadership + huge TAM + profits later." Now they care more about when high gross margin turns into high-quality cash flow. In 10x's past success, technology advantage and management judgment certainly mattered, but the funding environment and growth-style premium also accounted for a large part of the high valuation in 2020 to 2021. Today, the funding environment has changed, customer budgets are more cautious, and the market will no longer easily give more than 10x EV/Sales just because a product brochure looks good.
Horizontally, 10x's most real advantages over competitors remain "complete workflow + scientific mindshare + consumables economics + executable IP." Together, these four still give it high ground at the intersection of single-cell and spatial. Its weaknesses are just as real: demand is too sensitive to academic/government budgets, the profitability path is not closed, new platform transitions bring short-term disruption, and both large companies and startups will keep attacking the most profitable parts of its budget pool. Some of these weaknesses are cyclical, such as order freezes during the Atera transition. Some are structural, such as the effect of customer budget cycles and research funding on revenue visibility.
I think the market is most likely to misjudge whether Atera will be economically successful, not whether it will be technically successful. The threshold for technical success is producing sample throughput, resolution, and sensitivity. The threshold for economic success is that it must create more placements, more sample area, and more downstream consumables consumption without badly injuring Xenium/Visium, and eventually bring more stable cash flow. If Atera is only an industry demo, then TXG at about 5x forward EV/Sales is expensive. If Atera can truly move spatial into a new cycle of larger projects, larger samples, and higher repeat purchases, the current market cap is not unreasonable. The problem is that the answer is not yet in.
The most important variables over the next 1 year are Atera shipments, spatial revenue cadence, and whether NIH-side demand keeps dragging. Over the next 3 years, the key variable is whether Atera can push spatial biology from a high-value but relatively niche research tool into larger-scale translational research and pharma workflows. Over the next 5 years, the key variable is whether 10x can move from a "high-gross-margin but volatile tools innovator" into a "platform company that can continuously generate free cash flow." If all three layers materialize, today's "Hold/watch zone" may ultimately prove not expensive. If the first layer fails, a return to the teens would not be surprising.

At the same time, the U.S. academic funding environment only recovers to a state where "projects can continue but capital spending remains cautious," while Chromium consumables growth falls to low single digits. By the end of 2027, company revenue stays in the USD 580 million to USD 600 million range, gross margin falls to about 63%, the market compresses TXG from 5x sales to slightly above 3x, and the stock returns to the USD 14 to 18 range. This script does not require disaster. It only requires "the new platform is not disruptive enough + the old platform no longer grows fast."
The second script is "litigation and competition compress valuation together." In 2027, Illumina or Element obtains more favorable progress in court, or antitrust claims gain more support.
