Schneider Electric is a long-established French electrical company. The report’s stance is “Watch”: the business is first-rate, but the current price is too expensive, so the better move is to watch it for now and wait for a cheaper level.

What does it mainly do? It safely and efficiently delivers electricity from the grid to the equipment that uses it, ranging from a data center’s power-distribution room to the circuit breakers and outlets inside a building. Its hottest role in recent years has been selling “picks and shovels” to artificial intelligence: expanding compute capacity requires a large wave of new data centers, and server rooms consume heavy power and are hard to cool, while Schneider can supply the full chain from power distribution to liquid cooling. Data centers are already its largest business segment, accounting for about 30% of last year’s orders.

The fundamentals of this business are very solid: last year, almost all of the profit the company reported turned into real cash in hand, with a cash conversion rate of about 106%. It does not suffer from the problem of attractive accounting earnings but tight cash, and it has also increased its dividend for 16 consecutive years. That is why the report repeatedly stresses that the company itself is not the problem; the problem is the price.

So is it expensive now? Very expensive. Based on its current earnings level, buying the whole company would take about 38 years to earn back the purchase price, close to the highest level of the past five years and about 60% above the normal level of the past ten years. One warning sign is that first-quarter results beat expectations, yet the share price fell that day, showing that the good news had largely been priced in.

The biggest risk is that growth depends heavily on major customers continuing to build data centers. If they slow down, orders will be hit. In the first half of this year, the company also has to absorb several pressures at once: a stronger euro, U.S. tariffs, rising copper prices, and weakness in the Chinese market. The report’s reference point is that the price would need to fall below €235 to leave a margin of safety. At the current level, it is only something that can be held, not a good buying point.

Research Summary: Delivering Grid Power Safely Into AI Racks

First, the research scope. This report uses June 5, 2026 as the reference date. The subject is Schneider Electric SE, ticker SU.PA, ISIN FR0000121972, listed on Euronext Paris and priced in euros. It covers both a 12-month view and a 3-5 year view, with a balanced risk profile. No specific horizon or perspective was requested, so this report uses the Zen Horizon Framework defaults and states them explicitly. How does Schneider Electric make money? In one sentence: it is the company that moves electricity from the grid to end-use equipment safely, efficiently, and observably, from a medium-voltage room in a data center to breakers and sockets in a building. Its financials divide into two large segments: Energy Management, about 80% of revenue with a margin of about 21.8%, covering low-voltage and medium-voltage distribution, uninterruptible power supply (UPS, APC brand), building and grid automation, and energy-efficiency software; and Industrial Automation, about 20% of revenue with a margin of about 14.2%, covering PLCs, drives, process control, and AVEVA industrial software (Schneider FY2025 results, 2026-02-26, EMR Online FY2025 breakdown). FY2025 revenue exceeded €40 billion for the first time, reaching €40.2bn with organic growth of +8.9%; adjusted EBITA was €7.52bn, margin was 18.7%, free cash flow was €4.6bn, and cash conversion was about 106% (same source).

What is the market mainly trading in Schneider today? AI power. Schneider frames itself as a one-stop supplier for data centers, from “Grid to Chip, Chip to Chiller.” Data centers and networks have become its largest single end market, accounting for about 30% of 2025 orders. Pure data-center orders grew by “triple digits” year on year in Q4 2025, and year-end backlog reached €25.4bn, up +18%, meaningfully faster than the 8.9% revenue growth rate (Schneider FY2025, Facilities Dive, 2026-02-27). Add the $850 million acquisition of liquid-cooling company Motivair in 2024 and three joint AI factory reference designs with Nvidia, and Schneider has been bought as a core picks-and-shovels name in AI compute expansion.

The core reason its share price rose in the past was the delivery of that narrative: data-center orders drove years of 8-9% organic growth, margins climbed steadily, cash flow was solid, and the valuation center expanded from about 22x earnings at the end of 2022 to a historical high of about 36x at the end of 2025 (macrotrends PE history). In other words, both earnings and valuation rose together in a classic Davis double play.

What is the most important bull-bear disagreement today? It is less about whether the business is good, and more about whether the price is expensive and how long the data-center growth engine can keep running. Bulls see electrification plus AI power as a decade-scale structural demand trend. Schneider has orders, a deep moat, and stable cash flow, so a premium is justified. Bears argue that the €281.85 price already prices in the good story: roughly 38x trailing earnings is near the top of the five-year range and about 60% above the roughly 24x ten-year valuation center. H1 2026 also brings margin headwinds from FX, tariffs, copper prices, and China weakness, while the board’s sudden CEO replacement at the end of 2024 left questions about governance continuity (multiples.vc valuation, 2026-06-04, AInvest “beat but fell”, 2026-04-30).

Across fundamentals, valuation, competition, and capital-market expectations, Schneider currently sits in the position of a “high-quality asset at a high price.” The business quality is top tier among industrials and the demand theme is clear, but the stock already reflects quite optimistic expectations and offers a thin margin of safety.

Qualitative profile label: high-quality compound growth, but priced at a high valuation. Basis: revenue compounded from €25bn to €40bn over the past decade, margins and ROCE continued to rise, cash conversion stayed above 100%, and the dividend has been raised for 16 consecutive years. These are the traits of a classic high-quality compounder. The issue is that the current valuation is already in a historical top range. The quality of compounding is not the problem; the price offers almost no safety margin. This section does not assign the rating. The rating is left to Section 10, where the preceding facts lead naturally to the conclusion.

1. Longitudinal Analysis: 180 Years From Steel Furnaces to AI Racks

Schneider’s story is a history of repeatedly taking itself apart and rebuilding. To understand why it can now be an AI power picks-and-shovels supplier, we first need to see how it got here from a steel mill.

The starting point was steel and armaments, not electricity. In 1836, brothers Adolphe and Eugene Schneider took over the ironworks at Le Creusot in France and founded Schneider & Cie. The business made steel, heavy machinery, and railway equipment, and later expanded substantially into armaments after the Franco-Prussian War (Wikipedia: Schneider Electric). It first entered the electricity market in 1891, but it did not truly “become an electrical company” until after the 1980s.

First self-rebuild, 1980s-1990s: exiting heavy industry and betting on electrical. After ownership turbulence that included integration into Belgium’s Empain group in the 1960s and Paribas control in 1981, the company decisively divested steel and shipbuilding in the 1980s and 1990s. Three key acquisitions reshaped it into a power distribution and automation company: Télémécanique in industrial automation in 1988, U.S. distribution company Square D in 1991, and circuit-breaker leader Merlin Gerin in 1992. In 1999, it formally changed its name to Schneider Electric, signaling focus on the electrical core business (Wikipedia). This step built the foundation of today’s low-voltage and medium-voltage distribution franchise.

Second self-rebuild, 2006-2016: from selling hardware to selling systems, and entering data centers. The marker of this phase was the 2006 acquisition of U.S. company APC (American Power Conversion) for about $6.1 billion. APC made UPS products and data-center facility infrastructure (APC SEC filing, 2006). Today’s Schneider data-center business was seeded by that transaction. It then acquired smart-grid software company Telvent in 2011 for about $2 billion and completed the acquisition of British industrial-automation group Invensys in 2014 for about £3.4bn. Schneider changed from a company “selling power-distribution hardware” into one “selling integrated power and automation systems” (Control Engineering: Invensys completed, 2014).

Third self-rebuild, 2018 to today: making software the second leg. Schneider realized that even excellent hardware is one-time revenue, while software can lock in customers and lift the valuation. In 2018, it gained about 60% control of industrial-software company AVEVA through a reverse acquisition. In January 2023, it then acquired the remaining roughly 40% for about £3.9bn in cash, completed full privatization, and delisted AVEVA from the London Stock Exchange. The transaction implied an AVEVA equity value of about £9.8bn and enterprise value of about £10bn (Reuters/Investing: AVEVA 3,225 pence offer, Schnitger Corp: full ownership completed). In 2020, it also acquired building-software company RIB for about €1.4bn. By FY2025, software and services accounted for about 19% of group revenue, and the company targets about 25% by 2030 (se.com FY2025 release (PDF), EMR Online).

The latest foreshadowing: a sudden CEO change at the end of 2024. On November 4, 2024, the board unanimously decided to immediately remove CEO Peter Herweck, who had served for only about 18 months, and appoint internal veteran Olivier Blum. The official reason was “divergences in the execution of the company roadmap” (Bloomberg, 2024-11-04, Fortune, 2024-11-04). The move surprised the market, and JPMorgan directly called it a “major surprise” (MarketScreener). Blum had worked at Schneider for more than 30 years, had served as president of India, and just before the CEO change led the Energy Management business that includes data centers. He was a continuity candidate, but replacing a CEO who appeared to be executing strongly remains a governance question the market has not fully digested.

The longitudinal summary: Schneider rebuilds itself every 20 or 30 years, and each time it has aligned with the next era of electrical demand: from heavy industry to distribution, from hardware to systems, and from systems to software. AI data centers are the fourth node it is now riding.

2. Financial Longitudinal Review: Compounder With Solid Cash

Two words matter most in Schneider’s financials: compounding and cash.

Over the past decade, revenue compounded from €26.6bn in 2015 to €40.2bn in FY2025, with growth quality improving in the later years. Since 2021, organic growth has repeatedly been 8-9%, driven by volume, pricing, and data-center scaling, not simply M&A or FX (EODHD fundamentals; Schneider FY2025). Margins rose at the same time: adjusted EBITA margin improved from about 14.7% in 2019 to 18.7% in FY2025. That was the core reason Moody’s upgraded the rating from A3 to A2 in June 2025 (cbonds: Moody’s upgrade to A2, 2025-06-20).

Cash quality is the hardest part of the story. FY2025 free cash flow was €4.6bn, with cash conversion of about 106% and 111% when including non-cash impairment treatment. For many years, operating cash flow to net income has stayed above 100%. In plain terms, the accounting profit largely turns into real cash, not paper wealth (Schneider FY2025, MarketScreener FY2025 release). On capital returns, FY2025 ROCE was about 15.1%, and the company raised its 2026-2030 ROCE target to 15-20% (ainvest: capital efficiency).

One change deserves clear emphasis: net debt jumped sharply in 2025. Net debt on Dec. 31, 2025 was €13.72bn, up from €8.15bn at the end of 2024, nearly 70% higher. This was not operating deterioration. It mainly reflected one-off capital actions, including about €5.5bn used to buy out the remaining minority interests in Indian subsidiary SEIPL, plus €2.3bn of dividends and net M&A spend (MarketScreener FY2025 release). Even so, net debt to adjusted EBITA was about 1.8x, still comfortable for investment grade, and S&P maintained A/stable. Its upgrade occurred in 2024, not at the same time as Moody’s A2 upgrade in 2025-06 (S&P Global Ratings).

Another item to watch is goodwill. Serial acquisitions such as Invensys and AVEVA have left about €25bn of goodwill, more than shareholders’ equity. This is a common feature of acquisition-led growth companies. Current impairment risk does not look large because the AVEVA privatization was booked as a transaction with minority shareholders and basically did not add goodwill, but it is a balance-sheet item that needs long-term monitoring.

3. Share Price and Valuation History: A High Level Reached by Double Expansion

Schneider is one of the largest-weighted constituents in the CAC 40 and has been a star among European industrial stocks in recent years. Its capital-market narrative moved from “energy efficiency and electrification” around 2020 to “AI data-center power” after 2023, and its valuation label shifted from “steady industrial blue chip” to “AI compute picks-and-shovels supplier.”

This rally was a typical Davis double play: earnings, with 8-9% organic growth and rising margins, and valuation, through PE expansion, rose together. The PE ratio expanded from a low of about 21.8x at the end of 2022 to a historical high of about 36.2x at the end of 2025 (macrotrends PE history, companiesmarketcap PE history). Put differently, buying Schneider today means buying both a better business and a more expensive valuation. That is exactly the question Sections 7 and 10 need to answer.

4. Business Model and Moat: Installed Base Plus Software Flywheel

How does Schneider’s business machine work? The core is a cycle of “installed base + recurring revenue + software flywheel.”

By revenue structure, FY2025 split by business model was about 47% products, such as breakers, UPS, and sensors; about 34% systems, such as electrical rooms and integrated data-center solutions; and about 19% software and services. Systems grew the fastest, at +16% organically, because data-center integrated solutions have the strongest systems-integration characteristics (MarketScreener FY2025). By end market, data centers were about 30% on an orders basis, buildings about 29%, industry about 27%, and infrastructure about 14% (Schneider FY2025). The basis difference matters: the 30% data-center figure is mostly an orders measure, while the others are revenue measures. They add to 100% but are not strictly on the same basis, so citations should state that.

Three moat points actually hold up:

First, a large installed base and switching costs. Once Schneider’s distribution equipment is installed in a data center or building, it often stays in service for 10 to 20 years. Maintenance, spare parts, upgrades, and software subscriptions are tightly bound to the installed base. The company’s official EcoStruxure language says the platform covers 480,000+ sites, connects more than 1 billion devices, and is supported by 20,000+ system integrators (se.com EcoStruxure; note: this installed-base figure is a long-running cumulative marketing figure on the official site and was not reaffirmed as a current KPI in the FY2025 financial report. It is used only as an order-of-magnitude reference). This base cannot be copied in one or two years.

Second, full-chain positioning from grid to chip. In data centers, Schneider can supply medium-voltage and low-voltage distribution, UPS through APC, busways, prefabricated modular facilities, and chip-level liquid cooling acquired through Motivair. This ability to supply the whole package gives it bargaining power that others lack when customers design integrated solutions (Motivair/Schneider PR, se.com liquid-cooling portfolio).

Third, recurring revenue from the software flywheel. In the neutral software portfolio formed by AVEVA, ETAP, and RIB, recurring revenue has risen to about 79%, with AVEVA close to 85%. The company’s “digital flywheel” revenue accounted for 62% of total revenue in 2025 and grew +15% organically (se.com FY2025 release). Software turns the business from “sell once” into “collect every year,” which is the key reason an industrial stock can receive an upper-bound valuation.

Management and governance: current CEO Olivier Blum is a 30-year veteran, and chairman Jean-Pascal Tricoire is a former CEO (Pumps & Systems). Ownership is widely dispersed, with no controlling shareholder. Under French law, registered shares held for more than two years receive double voting rights, rewarding long-term holding. Two governance blemishes should be disclosed: in 2022, Schneider and Legrand were indicted in France over alleged pricing coordination and posted guarantees (MarketScreener, 2022); in 2025, Schneider’s U.S. building subsidiary paid an $11 million settlement over inflated costs on federal energy-efficiency contracts (U.S. Department of Justice, 2025). These are blemishes rather than fatal flaws, but they belong in the ledger.

5. Industry and Cycle: Electrification Is a Tailwind, Automation Is a Slow Recovery

Placed back into its industry, Schneider stands at the intersection of three forces: electrification, data centers, and industrial automation. The first two are strong tailwinds; the third is a slower recovery.

Electrification and grid investment are structural tailwinds. The IEA’s Electricity 2026 expects global electricity demand to grow +3.3% in 2025, +3.7% in 2026, and at a +3.6% annual average from 2026 to 2030 (IEA Electricity 2026). On grid investment, BloombergNEF estimates global grid capex will exceed $470 billion in 2025, up +16% year on year, marking a second consecutive year of double-digit growth, with transmission capex growing at about 16% annually from 2024 to 2027 (BNEF, 2025-12-01). Those investments ultimately land in medium- and low-voltage distribution equipment, where Schneider is a direct beneficiary.

Data centers are the hottest force. The IEA’s Energy and AI expects global data-center electricity use to roughly double from about 415 TWh in 2024 to about 945 TWh in 2030, approaching 3% of global power consumption, with AI-optimized data-center power use growing more than fourfold (IEA press release, 2025-04, S&P Global, 2025-04-10). More important is the leap in rack power density: Nvidia GB200 NVL72 runs at about 120kW per rack at full load, GB300 reference designs reach 142kW, and the industry is already discussing 1MW racks and 800VDC distribution. The higher the density, the more customers need a supplier like Schneider for high-power distribution plus liquid cooling. Traditional air cooling cannot remove heat at those densities (Introl: liquid cooling as essential, se.com 800VDC blog, 2025-10).

Industrial automation is the slow-recovery force. Global industrial automation went through a deeper-than-expected destocking cycle in 2024, and the motion-control market fell about 6.9% for the year. It bottomed and began recovering in 2025, and Roland Berger called 2026 the “first year of regaining growth momentum,” but the recovery is uneven: automotive and discrete industries are weak, while food and beverage and pharmaceuticals are stronger (Roland Berger, 2026-01-16). This directly explains why Schneider’s Industrial Automation segment was negative in 2024 and only recovered to low-single-digit growth in 2025.

Policy backdrop: in the U.S., IRA/Chips/IIJA spending of more than $2 trillion in total is a long-term positive for U.S. electrification, according to Schneider’s framing. In the EU, the 2024 revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) requires renovation of the worst-performing buildings and stops subsidies for fossil-fuel boilers, supporting building energy-efficiency demand (EUR-Lex EPBD 2024). The headwind is U.S. tariffs, discussed in Section 8.

6. Horizontal Peers: Among Electrical Peers, It Is Not the Most Expensive

The data-center power market is competitive, and Schneider belongs in the first tier: diversified, yet with high exposure. Six representative competitors form the peer map. Valuations are as of the 2026-06-04 close; PE is calculated as price divided by trailing EPS on same-day snapshots from stockanalysis.com.

After the table, it is important to state what each company has become:

ABB is the closest all-round rival to Schneider. It competes in both distribution and automation, is stronger in robotics and drives, and is weaker than Schneider in terminal distribution and software ecosystem. Its Electrification segment margin is 22.6%, in the same tier as Schneider Energy Management’s 21.8% (ABB Q4 2025). Its valuation, at 40x trailing PE, is even slightly higher than Schneider’s.

Siemens has the largest scale, with €78.9bn of revenue, but is the most diversified. Digital Industries, Smart Infrastructure, and rail sit together, so the market applies a conglomerate discount. Its 28x trailing PE and 2.0% dividend yield, the highest in the seven-name group, make it the cheapest in the set (Siemens FY2025). Its Smart Infrastructure division competes directly with Schneider Energy Management. It has €19bn of data-center orders in backlog, with €14bn expected to convert in FY2026.

Eaton is the U.S. power-management leader. Data centers are about one-fifth of its revenue and are the largest growth engine. Q4 data-center orders grew by about +200% year on year (Eaton Q1 2026). Its valuation, 41x, is slightly higher than Schneider’s, making it a U.S. high-purity data-center power peer.

Vertiv is widely viewed as the “purest” AI data-center power and cooling name. It specializes in high-density liquid cooling and critical facility infrastructure. Its 2026 revenue guidance was raised to $13.5-14.0 billion, implying about 30% organic growth, and project backlog more than doubled to above $15 billion (heygotrade: Vertiv 2026). The cost is the richest valuation: 81x trailing PE and 47x forward PE, far above Schneider. In other words, the market charges a Vertiv-level price for the purest AI power torque; Schneider is the more stable, more diversified, and more moderately valued compromise.

Legrand is strong in building electrical products and data-center “white space,” including in-rack PDUs and cabling. Data centers are about 26% of revenue, yet its valuation, 30x, is cheaper than Schneider’s (Legrand FY2025). Rockwell is a pure industrial-automation name with almost no data-center power exposure. FY2025 revenue grew only 1%, yet it trades at 48x PE, another extreme case of the automation-software premium.

Horizontal conclusion, at the factual level: Schneider’s trailing PE is about 38x, in the middle of the electrical peer group. It is cheaper than Vertiv (81x), Rockwell (48x), Eaton (41x), and ABB (40x), and more expensive than Legrand (30x) and Siemens (28x). So Schneider is “expensive” mainly relative to its own history, not relative to peers. Its niche is a diversified data-center power leader with high purity and the steadiest cash flow: it can capture AI power beta without putting the entire company on one end market like Vertiv.

7. Current Fundamentals and Bull-Bear Debate: Beating Expectations, Still Falling

Recent quarters: FY2025 organic growth was +8.9%, adjusted EBITA margin was 18.7%, and adjusted net income was €4.8bn, up +14% organically. Reported net income was €4.16bn, down -2% due to restructuring and impairment drag (Schneider FY2025). The latest period, 2026 Q1, disclosed revenue only: organic growth was +11.2%, Energy Management grew +12.8% driven by data centers, and Industrial Automation grew +4.4% as recovery continued. FX was a -6.7% drag (Investing.com Q1 2026).

What the market is trading: unquestionably AI data centers. Schneider has turned this into visible order and backlog growth and has jointly released reference designs with Nvidia three times: the first AI factory design in June 2025, the GB300 NVL72 142kW rack design in October 2025, and a gigawatt-scale AI factory validated blueprint at GTC in March 2026, including Vera Rubin reference designs and AVEVA digital-twin integration with Nvidia Omniverse (GlobeNewswire, 2026-03-16, HPCwire, 2025-10). The boundary matters: this is R&D and joint validation, not an exclusive supply contract. There is no disclosed monetary amount or locked supply commitment, so it should not be read as “Nvidia only uses Schneider.”

The key bull-bear split, and an already visible warning signal: on April 30, 2026, Schneider’s Q1 revenue beat expectations, yet the stock fell 1.99% that day because market concerns over full-year FX drag and segment imbalance outweighed the revenue beat (AInvest: beat but fell, 2026-04-30). This made the debate concrete. When a stock “beats and falls,” good news has been priced in, and the market becomes more sensitive to incremental risks such as FX, tariffs, and growth deceleration. Bulls need multi-year double-digit data-center growth. Bears need full valuation, margin headwinds, and eventual growth normalization.

8. Valuation Analysis: Great Company, Expensive Price

Start with cash-flow conversion, as any valuation should. Schneider’s operating cash flow to net income has been above 100% for many years, FY2025 free cash flow was €4.6bn, and cash conversion was about 106%. Accounting profit turns into cash solidly. There is no “profit without cash” problem, so PE and free-cash-flow valuation are reliable without heavily discounting earnings quality.

Current valuation snapshot, as of 2026-06-04: share price €281.85, market cap about €158.4bn. Trailing PE is about 38x: Schneider’s official FY2025 diluted EPS was €7.33. This reconciles with reported net income of €4.16bn divided by 562.6 million shares, or about €7.40. €281.85 divided by €7.33 is about 38.5x, consistent with the same-day stockanalysis figure of 38.45x (stockanalysis SU statistics page). One methodological trap: some third-party aggregators use a €7.98 EPS field and produce about 35x, but that figure does not match any official Schneider EPS measure, diluted €7.33 or basic €7.41, and also does not match €4.16bn of reported net income, which would imply only about 522 million shares, below the actual share count. This report does not use it and uses the official diluted-basis 38x as the benchmark. On a forward basis, consensus implies FY2026E forward PE of about 28x, corresponding to EPS of about €10.0, and FY2027E of about 24-25x, corresponding to about €11.5 (MarketScreener consensus). EV/EBITDA is about 20-21x, and dividend yield is about 1.5%.

At high power density, traditional air cooling cannot remove the heat, and customers need suppliers of “high-power distribution + liquid cooling.” EcoStruxure's official long-term cumulative promotion says it covers 480,000+ sites and connects more than 1 billion devices, and group recurring revenue has risen to about 79%. With these 3 layers combined, existing customers would “miss it a lot.”

    But indispensability is medium, not absolute: there are plenty of competitors (ABB/Siemens/Eaton/Vertiv/Legrand/Rockwell), and Schneider is the category leader, not the only source. On 2026-04-30, after Q1 revenue beat expectations (organic +11.2%, €9.77bn), the share price fell 1.99% that day, clear evidence that “good news is already priced in.”

    If there is a perception gap, it can only be “not looking far enough.” Bulls and bears both agree it is a first-rate business.
