The risk is not that the company "breaks"; it is that you paid too high a price for a good company that still has an industrial cycle: if the cycle weakens and valuation reverts to 20-24x cash flow, a 45%-60% permanent capital loss could occur without the company itself deteriorating. The ideal buy range is $210-260, implying at least a 20%-30% margin of safety; at today's price it belongs on a watchlist instead.

Preliminary conclusion. My conclusion on Rockwell Automation is: this is an easy-to-understand, relatively high-quality industrial automation leader with a strong but not "invincible" moat; the question is not "is it a good company," but "does today's price leave a long-term owner enough room for return." The company has a very strong installed base, distribution channels and customer relationships in North American automation control; the profit quality of its software and control business is clearly better than hardware, and capital-expenditure intensity is not high, so its long-term free-cash-flow capacity is real. But the company remains exposed to the industrial capex cycle, distribution-channel inventory swings, M&A execution, and the risk of a high valuation reverting. At the share price around May 26, 2026, ROK sits roughly at $434/share with a market cap of about $49 billion, and the market values it at roughly 38x P/FCF, 26–28x EV/EBITDA, and about 34x forward adjusted EPS. For a "balanced but conservative" 10-year investor, this price looks more like "an excellent company at a rich price" than "a long-term entry point with a margin of safety."

Current snapshot. As of the latest quotes, ROK trades at about $434.18 with a market cap of about $49.0B. Based on rolling calculations from the FY2025 10-K and the FY2026 Q2 10-Q/quarterly release, TTM sales are about $8.8 billion, TTM net income attributable to shareholders is about $1.09 billion, and TTM free cash flow is about $1.34 billion; from this, the price implies a cash-flow yield of only about 2.7%–2.8%. This means that when you buy today, the "cash return you actually pocket at the start" is not high, and you must bet on some future growth and on the high valuation holding up.
One-sentence version. If you view ROK as a business you plan to "acquire outright and hold for 10 years," it is worth researching and tracking over the long term; if your question is "is this price low enough for me to hold it comfortably in size," my answer is: no.
Understanding the Business
What is the core business. Rockwell Automation's business can be split into three parts: first, Intelligent Devices, weighted toward hardware and field devices; second, Software & Control, including control, software, subscriptions and part of its SaaS/on-premise software revenue; third, Lifecycle Services, weighted toward projects, solutions and services. FY2025 revenue for the three segments was $3.756 billion, $2.383 billion, and $2.203 billion respectively, totaling $8.342 billion. Judging by revenue mix, it is not a pure software company but an integrated "hardware + control software + lifecycle services" industrial automation enterprise.
Who are the customers, and how does it charge. The company serves manufacturing customers, selling through independent distributors and a direct sales team together; large systems and service projects are handled mainly by direct sales. The company disclosed in its 10-Q that in most countries it sells primarily through independent distributors, and that in the first half of FY2026 its two largest distributors together accounted for about 20% of total sales. In other words, ROK's customer base is diversified, but its channels are not fully diversified. Its charging methods include one-time hardware sales, software licenses, subscriptions/SaaS, and revenue recognized over project and service cycles.
Is revenue recurring, stable, and predictable. This company is not utility-grade stable, but neither is it a "no orders, no business" operation. Recurrence comes mainly from four sources: first, the installed base and replacement demand; second, software maintenance, subscriptions and ARR; third, service and project continuation; fourth, contract liabilities and order backlog. The company explicitly lists ARR as a core metric and, in its long-term framework, proposes to continue achieving double-digit ARR growth; as of March 31, 2026, contract liabilities were about $720 million, of which the company had already recognized about $395 million of revenue from beginning-of-period contract liabilities during the first half of the year. Meanwhile, total backlog at the end of FY2025 was $2.878 billion, down from FY2024's $3.091 billion but still providing some visibility. My judgment is: recurrence is strengthening, but overall company revenue is still significantly affected by the industrial cycle.
Cost structure and economics. One advantage of this business is that capital expenditure is not heavy. From 2019 to 2025, annual capex ran roughly between $114 million and $225 million, generally a modest share of sales; the company's IR materials also give a long-term framework: capex is typically about 2.5%–4% of sales, with a free-cash-flow conversion target of about 100%. On the other hand, segment profitability differs greatly: FY2025 Software & Control segment operating margin was about 29.7%, clearly higher than Intelligent Devices' 18.0% and Lifecycle Services' 14.5%. This shows that the truly high-quality profit core is not the lowest layer of hardware, but the combination of control platform, software and services.
Does it depend on a few customers, suppliers, channels, policies, or key people. On customers: no unusually high concentration in a single major customer is disclosed in the company's recent 10-K; but there is some concentration at the channel level, with the two largest distributors together accounting for about 20% of sales in the first half of 2026, a risk that must be tracked continuously. On the supply chain, the company's 10-K still lists supplier, component and raw-material availability as a risk item. On key people, CEO Blake Moret has long tenure and management is stable, but this is not a "can't run without one person" founder-type enterprise. On policy, tariffs and global trade policy affect cost and the cadence of supply and demand; in its FY2025 10-K the company stated that, through repricing, sourcing substitution and redundant manufacturing footprint, FY2026 tariff costs are expected to be EPS-neutral.
Is this a business I can understand. Yes, and relatively easily. In essence it is: "Using control platforms such as Allen-Bradley/Logix, its installed base, channels and engineering capability, it sells equipment, control systems, software and ongoing services to manufacturing customers, and continually captures upgrade, maintenance, expansion and digitalization revenue across the full lifecycle of the customer's plant." From a long-term owner's perspective, I would be willing to hold this business for 5 years or even longer; but on the premise that the purchase price is reasonable.

Industry and Competitive Landscape
Industry characteristics. Industrial automation is neither a pure high-growth track charging ahead nor a stagnant old-line industry; more precisely: it has structural tailwinds over the medium-to-long term, with clear cyclical swings in the short-to-medium term. Rockwell itself summarizes its growth drivers as resilience, agility, sustainability, cybersecurity, labor shortages, reshoring/stimulus policy, software-defined automation and autonomous operations; the International Federation of Robotics, meanwhile, disclosed that about 295,000 industrial robots were installed in factories worldwide in 2024, a record high, and global annual robot installations have stayed above the 500,000-unit level for several years running. This shows that automation demand is not a fabricated theme but a real spending direction.
Is long-term demand stable. I believe the "direction" of demand is stable while the "cadence" is unstable. Stability comes from three long-term variables: an aging population and skilled-labor shortages, rising quality/cost/safety/energy constraints, and the digitalization and AI-fication of manufacturing. The OECD also treats labor shortages as a medium-to-long-term structural issue. The problem is that customers' automation investment is often part of the capex budget, and is therefore jointly affected by interest rates, inventory, consumer conditions, project delays and policy uncertainty. Rockwell itself acknowledges in its FY2025 10-K that manufacturing PMI was below 50 in every month of FY2025's fourth quarter. My judgment is: this is a "long-term demand exists, short-term strongly cyclical" industry.
Will this industry be disrupted by technology or regulation. It will be reshaped by technological evolution, but is unlikely to be "zeroed out overnight." Automation control systems involve field devices, real-time control, safety, industrial protocols, certification, engineering integration and after-sales support—not the "go live and switch instantly" nature of internet software. The real threats are more likely to come from: first, Chinese and Asian domestic suppliers rapidly catching up in certain product niches; second, giants with more complete systems playing a combination game across broader electrical, process control, building, grid or software ecosystems; third, open source, AI, and cloud-edge coordination narrowing the differentiation of the software layer. So this is not "no technology risk," but "technology substitution usually happens on a multi-year scale."
Main competitors and the company's position. The main competitors ROK lists in its 10-K include Siemens, ABB, Schneider Electric, Emerson, Mitsubishi Electric, Honeywell, and Dassault Systèmes. In IR materials the company explicitly stresses that it is the North American market leader, with the highest share, largest installed base, strongest channels and deepest customer relationships. This claim is the company's own account, not an independent third-party market-share audit; but combined with its long-term brand, channels and installed base, its leading position in North American discrete manufacturing and control systems is credible. A more accurate positioning is: not first in every automation field globally, but very strong in North American control automation.
Industry profit pool and pricing power. The industry profit pool is not evenly distributed. Profit tends to favor companies with a deep installed base, strong control-platform standards, a high share of software and services, and strong project-execution capability. ROK's data bears this out: per the company's FY2025 disclosure, Software & Control accounts for about 29% of total revenue but contributes about 42% of segment operating profit; this is the high-value link. Nearly all of the company's 2025 sales growth came from price and mix optimization, and in FY2026 Q2 multiple segments explicitly noted "price realization exceeds input costs." This means the company does not lack pricing power; rather, its pricing power is concentrated more in the core categories of "platform + services + control software" than uniformly across every SKU.
Judgment on industry attractiveness. I would define it as: a better company in a better industry, but not a "make money in your sleep" perfect industry. Automation is an industry with long-term value-creation potential, but the cycle, project nature, channel inventory, engineering execution and international competition are all very real.

The Moat
The core of the moat lies not in any single patent, but in the combined barrier formed by "platform, installed base, channels, engineering capability, and software control environment." In its 10-K, Rockwell stresses that its Logix-centered integrated control and information architecture is an important differentiator; the company describes itself as the only automation supplier able to support multi-discipline production needs—discrete, process, batch, safety, security, motion control and power control—within a single hardware/software environment. The company also emphasizes open architecture and a strong partner ecosystem. For a long-term owner, the important implication of these statements is: what ROK sells is not just a PLC, but a standard environment that lets a customer's plant "run and keep upgrading."

Is the moat widening, stable, or narrowing. My judgment is: overall stable, widening in parts, but not widening across the board. The widening part is in software, subscriptions, services, ARR, AI and digital capabilities; the stable part is in the Allen-Bradley/Logix installed base and North American channels; the potentially narrowing part is in standard hardware and some international market share, because global rivals are stronger and domestic rivals are more numerous. The company itself, in its IR materials, defines the future moat directions as software-defined automation, AI design/control/logistics, edge-and-cloud combinations, and access to European/Asian markets.
Difficulty of replication by competitors. Replicating a single hardware product is not hard; replicating a complete platform with decades of installed base, engineer habits, a distribution ecosystem, OEM relationships, a control software stack and an after-sales service system usually requires years of investment and heavy capital. This is why industry competition has always been fierce, yet the leadership landscape has not been quickly overturned.
Can the company raise prices in inflation, and hold profit in downturns. The answer is "it can raise prices, but with limits; it can stay profitable, but margins will fluctuate." In 2025 the company clearly stated that price contributed about 3 percentage points to total sales, and in FY2026 Q2 multiple segments noted that price realization exceeded input costs; but the actual FY2024–2025 results also show that when demand is weak, the company still relies on cost contraction and efficiency gains to defend profit, not on price hikes alone. ROK's high margins come more from a combination of structural advantage + execution than from a pure cyclical windfall; but profit volatility remains real.
Moat strength score: 4.0/5.
Management and Capital Allocation
Is management trustworthy. From a long-term owner's standpoint, my judgment is: basically trustworthy, with a fairly complete governance structure, but not the "genius capital allocator" type of management. The board and executive compensation structure clearly emphasizes long-term value creation and risk constraints: stock-ownership requirements, anti-hedging and anti-pledging policies, a clawback mechanism, a fairly high share of long-term incentives, and a performance-evaluation system built around Adjusted EPS, free cash flow, ARR, ROIC and relative TSR. The company also discloses that most of the NEOs' direct compensation comes from long-term equity incentives. For a mature industrial company, this design is broadly reasonable.
Are interests aligned with shareholders. As of the November 1, 2025 measurement date, CEO Blake Moret held/could acquire within 60 days about 529,000 shares—not a small absolute amount, but still less than 1% of shares outstanding; so this is not founder-large-shareholder-style "strong alignment," but more like professional-manager-style alignment. On the positive side, the company requires the CEO to hold company stock worth at least 6x base salary, and discloses that as of September 30, 2025 all NEOs met the ownership requirement. On the negative side, alignment between shareholders and management depends more on institutional design than on natural equity control.
Capital-allocation record. Over the past few years, ROK's uses of cash have been fairly clear: invest in organic growth first, then do strategic M&A, then return cash to shareholders through dividends and buybacks. The company's IR explicitly states that its capital-allocation priorities have not changed: invest in organic growth, add about 1 percentage point of growth per year on average through M&A, and use remaining cash for dividends and buybacks. In FY2023–FY2025, cash dividends were about $542 million, $571 million, and $591 million respectively; over the same period buybacks were about $312 million, $595 million, and $425 million. Shares outstanding at the end of 2025 fell from 114.8 million shares in 2023 to 112.4 million shares, and in FY2026 Q2 the company repurchased another 1.2 million shares for $454 million. This shows buybacks are actually happening, not just talk.
Are the buybacks rational. This is where I am most reserved about management. At the "execution level," ROK does keep buying back and reducing share count; but at the "value level," it cannot be proven that all these buybacks happened when the stock was clearly undervalued. Because looking back today, ROK enjoyed a high valuation premium in quite a few years, and if it later turns out these buybacks were done at cash-flow multiples above 30x, then their accretion to per-share intrinsic value is not as pretty as the share price makes it look on the surface. In other words: buybacks exist; whether they are "excellent" is in doubt.
Does M&A create value. M&A appears to be an important tool for ROK to expand software, services, robotics and international capability in recent years, and this direction is reasonable in itself; but the results are not all positive. In 2025 the company took a sizable non-cash impairment on the Sensia-related business, and in FY2026 Q2 disclosed that a separation agreement had been signed for the joint venture, with related assets and liabilities classified as held for sale at the end of March 2026 and the transaction closing on April 1, 2026. This at least shows: ROK's M&A/joint ventures do carry trial-and-error costs. From a long-term owner's perspective, this lowers my rating of its capital-allocation capability.
Is management candid. On the whole, management speaks more bluntly than many companies about risk, cycles, tariffs, project delays and margin pressure; FY2025 also truthfully disclosed unfavorable items such as the Sensia impairment, restructuring, and changes in accounting method related to legacy asbestos. Both the company's auditor and management confirmed that internal controls were effective in 2025, with no material weakness disclosed. I have not seen obvious "reality-concealing" behavior, but that does not mean the company has no complex items. On the contrary, complex items are themselves a risk.
Management and capital-allocation score: 3.5/5.
Financial Quality and Owner Earnings

Growth quality. From 2019 to 2025, sales rose from $6.695 billion to $8.342 billion, an unimpressive annualized rate; looking at the TTM rolling to March 2026, sales are about $8.804 billion, showing the company is recovering. The problem is that growth is not linear enough: after peaking at $9.058 billion in 2023, it fell back and stalled in 2024–2025. In other words, ROK is not a "cycle-free compounding machine" that delivers a beautiful growth curve every year. It is more like a composite of "a long-term rising staircase interspersed with clear volatility."
Margins and cash flow. ROK's core trait is not "rapid revenue growth," but its ability to make margins and cash flow look very good in good years. Although FY2025 GAAP net income attributable to shareholders was only $869 million, free cash flow reached $1.358 billion; behind this is partly cost optimization, price discipline, and timing changes in tax/bonus payments, and partly the fact that 2025 GAAP profit was dragged down by the Sensia impairment and legacy-asbestos-related accounting changes. In FY2026 Q2, the company again lifted quarterly net income to $351 million and quarterly adjusted EBITDA to $550 million, with ROIC (TTM) rising to 16.5% GAAP / 17.2% adjusted. This shows the profit recovery is real, but also shows again: short-term GAAP-profit volatility does not equal a long-term distortion of cash-generating ability.
Is the profit real cash or accounting profit. The answer is: broadly real, but beware single-year GAAP noise and M&A amortization/impairment noise. The key disturbances disclosed by the company for FY2025 include: a Sensia-related $224 million non-cash impairment (after tax and after minority-interest impact, about $110 million to ROK), and a $136 million pre-tax charge from legacy-asbestos-related method changes and increased reserves. These all depress accounting profit, but do not necessarily depress operating cash flow to the same degree. On the contrary, operating cash flow and free cash flow recovered clearly in 2025. In other words, I have not seen obvious signs of profit fabrication, but looking at this company you must see through the accounting noise to the cash flow.
Working capital and survivability. The cash-flow swings of 2022 and 2024 remind us that this is an industrial company that can be "dragged" by working capital. The company itself explained back in 2022 that higher receivables and inventory, plus supply-chain constraints, weighed on free cash flow. By March 31, 2026, receivables edged down from $1.931 billion to $1.883 billion, inventory edged down from $1.247 billion to $1.225 billion, and payables fell from $930 million to $833 million; first-half operating cash flow actually slipped slightly year over year, mainly due to bonus payouts and working-capital factors. The good news is that the company's debt structure is manageable, cash flow is positive, and the A-rated credit framework is intact; the bad news is that it is clearly not the kind of super-steady enterprise that "doesn't budge even when a recession comes."
Leverage and solvency. As of March 31, 2026, the company had cash of about $423 million, short-term debt of $1.116 billion, long-term debt of $2.571 billion, total interest-bearing debt of about $3.689 billion, and net debt of roughly $3.266 billion. Combined with market-data conventions, ROK's debt/EBITDA is roughly around 1.7–1.8x, not aggressive but not "zero-leverage" conservative either. Based on my rough estimate from TTM profit and interest expense, interest coverage is around 10x, enough to show that short-term solvency is not the core issue; the real question is whether it is worth taking on moderate leverage and cyclical risk for a high-valuation asset.
Estimating owner earnings. Here I use a conservative convention, because the company does not separately disclose "maintenance capex." Strictly following Buffett's logic, owner earnings should start from net income, add back non-cash charges such as D&A, then subtract the capex and working-capital increments needed to maintain the current competitive position. But because ROK's D&A, M&A amortization, stock-based compensation, working-capital swings and one-off items are numerous, to avoid overstatement I directly adopt a stricter approximation: Owner Earnings ≈ operating cash flow – all capex. On this basis: for the TTM to 2026/3, operating cash flow is about $1.535 billion and capex about $196 million, so conservative owner earnings are about $1.339 billion. This is almost equal to the company's disclosed TTM free-cash-flow level. At the current market cap of about $49B, the market values this "conservative owner earnings" at roughly 36–37x. For an industrial automation leader, this is not an absurd sky-high price, but for a conservative value investor, it is by no means cheap.
Overall conclusion on financial quality. ROK's financial quality is generally good: low capex, real cash flow, sustained dividends, long-term buybacks, and strong profit-recovery ability; but there are also four "non-perfect points" to remember: first, revenue and cash flow are cyclical; second, GAAP profit gets disturbed by M&A amortization, impairment and complex items; third, ROE is inflated by low book equity and buybacks, so look at ROIC first, not just ROE; fourth, the balance sheet is not a "cash mountain."
Valuation and Margin of Safety
Valuation cannot rely on PE alone, so I use owner-earnings discounting, relative valuation, and asset/liquidation logic together. The valuation baseline uses TTM conservative Owner Earnings = $1.339 billion, without revising it upward, to avoid pulling forward the 2026 earnings recovery too much. The discount rate references the reality of the 10-year Treasury yield of about 4.5%, while requiring an adequate equity risk premium for the industrial cycle and single-stock risk.

Valuation notes. These assumptions are directionally consistent with the company's long-term framework of "mid-single-digit organic growth, ~100% FCF conversion, ROIC held at a high level, and EPS growing faster than revenue," but I have deliberately not fully copied management's targets—I have knocked both growth and terminal value down a notch. Even so, the current share price of about $434 remains above my base range and near or even above the top of the optimistic range. In other words: as long as you accept the value-investing logic of "is it worth the price" rather than simply "is the company good," the current price is not friendly enough.
Relative valuation. To avoid the illusion of "peers are all expensive, so it isn't expensive either," I make a directional comparison of ROK against several large comparable companies. Note that European peers' prices and conventions are not fully uniform, so the table below is mainly for comparing relative valuation positions, not for mechanical pricing.

Relative-valuation conclusion. ROK does have better pure-automation attributes and a higher-quality North American control platform than EMR, but its current valuation premium is also very obvious; relative to HON, ROK has higher automation purity but a still-more-aggressive valuation. Even placed among high-valuation automation assets, it is not one of the clearly cheap ones.
Asset or liquidation value. This method is not friendly to ROK. As of March 31, 2026, total assets were $11.256 billion, of which goodwill was $3.838 billion and other intangible assets net were $744 million; shareholders' equity was only $3.576 billion. That is, goodwill and intangibles combined already exceed book equity, and on a tangible-net-asset basis the protection is not thick. For an asset-light, brand/software/relationship-type company, this is not unusual; but for a conservative investor, it means: if the operating logic is broken, book assets provide limited downside support for the share price.
Final value range. Combining DCF, relative valuation and the asset perspective, my conclusion is as follows:

At the current price of about $434, there is roughly a 31%–74% premium relative to my fair-value range; even against the top of the optimistic range, there is still about an 11% premium.
Margin-of-safety judgment. My clear conclusion is: the current margin of safety is insufficient. The most fragile assumption is not "will ROK die," but "over the next 10 years, can it use high enough growth and margins to offset the already-very-high entry multiple today." If growth falls short of expectations, or the market simply no longer wants to grant it such a high multiple, you don't even need the company's operations to deteriorate for the investment return to be quite mediocre.
I would divide the price bands this way: Ideal buy price range: $210-$260; acceptable holding price range: $260-$340; clearly overvalued price range: above $380. This is not a precise formula, but a range judgment based on "conservative value + reasonable return + at least a 20%–30% margin of safety."
Risks, Counterarguments, and Final Recommendation
The most important risk is not short-term volatility, but "you bought a still-cyclical good company at too high a price." First is competitive risk. ROK itself acknowledges the industry is "highly competitive," with main rivals including Siemens, ABB, Schneider, Emerson, Honeywell and others. The real danger is not that one of them suddenly crushes it, but persistent price erosion, slower-than-expected international-market progress, and a narrowing technological gap in key product lines.
Second is channel and customer spending-cadence risk. In most countries the company relies on independent distributors, and its two largest distributors together accounted for about 20% of sales in the first half of FY2026. This means that once distributors actively destock or customers delay budgets, ROK's short-term revenue and cash flow will swing more than end demand does.
Third is technology-substitution and platform-competition risk. ROK's Logix architecture and installed base are strengths, but "software-defined automation, industrial AI, autonomous operations, edge-cloud convergence" are also the positions every giant is fighting for. If control-layer differentiation declines in the future and customers care more about the upper-layer software ecosystem or overall electrical-system turnkey capability, ROK's relative bargaining power could be weakened.
Fourth is M&A and accounting-complexity risk. The Sensia impairment, separation and unwinding have already proven that ROK's capital allocation is not error-free; add the legacy-asbestos-related accounting-method changes and liability estimates, and while this does not necessarily mean poor financial quality, it raises the difficulty of judging the company's intrinsic value.
Fifth is overvaluation risk. The market's current view of this company already partly prices in the good story of "automation + software + AI + North American leader." For a long-term investor, the most dangerous thing is not a short-term drop, but: over the next 10 years the company's operations have no problems, yet your annualized return is still low. This is the classic "good company but bad price."
The strongest bear case. If I were a bear, I would put it this way: ROK has been overvalued into a "quasi-software company," but it is still, in essence, an industrial capital-goods company driven to a substantial degree by hardware, projects and distribution; the North American advantage is real, but globalized growth and M&A extension may not be enough to support today's valuation; Software & Control's high profit is nice, but its scale is still not enough to turn the whole company into a "steady-state high-compounding SaaS"; and once the industrial cycle weakens or the market deflates the bubble in high-multiple industrial stocks, ROK could simply revert from "excellent" to "normal," and shareholders would suffer a significant capital loss. I consider this bear case not weak.
What facts would overturn my investment judgment. If the following facts emerge in the future, I would admit I underestimated it, or overestimated it: If over the next 3–5 years Software & Control keeps holding a 30%+ segment margin while ARR keeps growing double-digit, Lifecycle Services holds a margin above 13%–15%, and the company can restabilize ROIC back above 20%+, then my "fair-value range" may be too low. Conversely, if for two or three consecutive years free-cash-flow conversion is clearly below 80%, North American share or channel advantage wavers, segment margins step down, or another sizable goodwill impairment appears, then I would conclude the moat was overvalued by the market.
Comparison with other opportunities. Placing ROK in today's capital market for comparison, it is not clearly superior to alternatives. On one hand, ROK's current conservative FCF yield is only about 2.8%; on the other, the 10-year Treasury yield is about 4.5%, while the S&P 500's forward PE is about 21x, corresponding to a forward earnings yield near 4.8%. ROK is of course more "pure automation" than the index and has a North American moat, but its valuation is also significantly more expensive. For balanced-but-conservative capital, it is currently not clearly superior to buying the index, nor clearly superior to holding high-grade bonds/the risk-free rate. If you could only hold 5 assets, I do not think it belongs in the portfolio at the current price; only when the price returns to the fair-value band or even the margin-of-safety band would it qualify to compete for a portfolio slot.
