The business quality is very high, but the price has already pulled too much forward. Service, spares, and upgrade revenue accounts for nearly 40%, making it the most resilient part of the cycle; the company holds net cash, interest coverage is about 45 times, and the share count has shrunk by a cumulative 15% over six years. The issue is price: the current PE is 56 times, and the starting earnings yield is actually below the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield. The market has already paid for three things at once: sustained AI/HBM strength, share gains, and high gross margins lasting indefinitely.

Reasonable intrinsic value is USD 100-140, and the current price is still more than double the upper end. The real risk is not business deterioration, but AI strength being misread as a permanent trend, compounded by China contributing more than 30% of revenue and being constrained by export controls. The ideal buy range is USD 80-110; if valuation reverts to its historical midpoint, a 40%-60% drawdown is not hard to imagine.

Conclusion First

Here is the conclusion upfront: my investment rating for Lam Research is "Watch." Lam Research is a high-quality semiconductor equipment company that I am willing to study for the long term and would be willing to own for many years at the right price. It operates in front-end wafer fabrication equipment, an industry with high barriers, demanding technology and strong cyclicality. Lam has a strong competitive position in etch, deposition, clean and installed-base services. Once a customer has introduced a tool and qualified it for a process, switching costs are high, while service and upgrade revenue improve cash-flow resilience. The question is not whether this is a good business. The question is whether today's price is good enough. As of 2026-05-22 00:15 UTC, LRCX traded at about USD 302.24, with a market capitalization of about USD 380.5 billion. Based on trailing 12-month net income, free cash flow and the conservative Owner Earnings estimate in this report, its earnings yield is only about 1.5%–1.8%, below the roughly 4.57% yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury and also clearly below the S&P 500 earnings-yield level. For an investor who is balanced, somewhat conservative and willing to hold for more than 10 years, this looks more like a good company at a price that currently lacks a margin of safety.

Is there a margin of safety at the current price? Not obviously.

On the type of investor it suits, Lam is better suited to long-term value investors who can tolerate the semiconductor capex cycle, understand process barriers and customer qualification logic, and are willing to wait for price. It is less suitable for ordinary investors who treat it as a low-volatility compounder or chase short-term AI enthusiasm. Lam's business quality is high, but its share price already embeds high expectations for many years of future growth.

There are three major uncertainties. First, whether equipment spending driven by AI, HBM and advanced packaging is a multi-year new normal or one strong cyclical upswing. Second, China-related revenue has been high in recent years and in the latest quarter, so export controls and domestic substitution may affect long-term share. Third, whether the current valuation already prices in too much good news from industry strength, share gains and high margins.

In one sentence, the preliminary conclusion is: 【View】 I am willing to put Lam on a list of high-quality businesses, but I will not ignore price discipline just because the company is excellent. At today's price, I prefer to keep tracking and wait rather than rush to buy. Based on the valuation framework below, my conclusion is: worth following for the long term, but not worth a heavy position at the current valuation.

The score summary is as follows: business understandability 4/5; industry attractiveness 3/5; moat strength 4/5; management and capital allocation 4/5. Overall, it is a high-quality but highly valued stock.

Business, Industry and Moat

How does this company actually make money? Lam is a global supplier of wafer fabrication equipment and services for the semiconductor industry. Its core products cover key process steps such as deposition, etch and clean; the company itself defines these capabilities as its core leadership areas. Revenue falls into two broad categories: new tools and front-end equipment systems, and customer support-related revenue, including services, spares, upgrades and Reliant tools for non-leading-edge nodes. In FY2025, total revenue was USD 18.436 billion, including USD 11.491 billion from systems and USD 6.944 billion from customer support-related revenue and other. In other words, the latter was already close to 38% of total revenue, which is what makes Lam more attractive for long-term ownership than a pure equipment-sales model. By FY2026 Q3, customer support-related revenue had reached USD 2.111 billion in a single quarter, around 36% of quarterly revenue.

Who are the customers, and how is Lam paid? Lam's customers are fabs and IDMs, covering memory, foundry and logic/IDM. In FY2025 equipment and upgrade revenue, Foundry accounted for 45%, Memory 42%, and Logic/IDM 13%. The payment model is essentially "one-time equipment sales + installation/validation + follow-on spares, services, upgrades and refurbished tools." This model has a very important economic feature: 【Fact】 once a customer selects a supplier for a specific process application and node and completes production qualification, it will typically continue using that supplier's equipment for that application as long as performance still meets specifications. This means Lam's moat is not a consumer-brand moat. It is a moat driven by process stickiness + qualification + production-line stability.

Is revenue recurring, stable and predictable? The answer is half yes, half no. Systems revenue depends heavily on the fab capex cycle, so it fluctuates materially. FY2024 revenue fell from USD 17.429 billion in FY2023 to USD 14.905 billion, then rebounded to USD 18.436 billion in FY2025. But customer support revenue from services, spares and upgrades is more stable. FY2025 deferred revenue rose to USD 2.681 billion, of which about USD 2.150 billion is expected to be recognized within one year. From a long-term owner's perspective, Lam is not a stable utility. It is a high-barrier, strongly cyclical equipment company whose service mix is improving. If the stock market closed for five years, I would be willing to own this business, provided I did not pay too high a price when buying.

What does the cost structure look like? Lam has high gross margins, but this is not an easy spread business. It is a technology manufacturer that must keep investing substantial resources in R&D, engineering and customer support. FY2025 gross margin was 48.7%. R&D expense was USD 2.096 billion, or 11.4% of revenue; SG&A was USD 982 million, or 5.3% of revenue. As of August 7, 2025, the company had about 19,000 full-time employees, of whom more than 29% worked in R&D. In its 10-K, the company also said directly that patents by themselves do not determine its success; success depends mainly on R&D, engineering, marketing, support and delivery capabilities. Put differently, this is a classic knowledge-intensive, customer co-development and process-iteration business.

What stage is the industry in, and is long-term demand stable? The semiconductor equipment industry remains a growth industry overall, but growth is not linear. It is a long-term upward, sharply volatile in the short and medium term industry. In its December 2025 forecast, WSTS expected the global semiconductor market to grow by more than 25% in 2026 to USD 975.0 billion. In April 2026, SEMI said global 300mm fab equipment spending was expected to grow 18% in 2026 to USD 133.0 billion and grow another 14% in 2027 to USD 151.0 billion, driven by AI chips, edge devices and regional supply-chain localization. In short, the long-term demand direction is sound, but equipment-company profits will swing materially around the capex cycle.

Who are the main competitors, and where does Lam stand? In its own 10-K, Lam lists Applied Materials as a major competitor in dielectric/metal deposition and etch markets, and also mentions ASM International, Tokyo Electron, Hitachi, Screen, Semes and others. If I had to name the strongest competitor, I would put Applied Materials first. It has a broader product portfolio and larger scale, with FY2026 Q2 revenue of USD 7.910 billion and operating margin of 31.9%. Lam's FY2026 Q3 revenue was USD 5.841 billion, with operating margin of 35.0%. This shows that while Lam is not as broad as AMAT, its margins are very strong in the areas where it excels. The company's IR page says that "nearly every advanced chip uses Lam technology"; that is company self-description. I interpret it as high participation in advanced nodes, rather than an unchallengeable monopoly across the entire industry.

Moat assessment: The brand advantage here is not a consumer brand but a process-credibility brand. Cost advantage is not absolute low cost, but a total cost of ownership advantage built from yield, throughput, process window and production quality. Scale advantage appears in the installed base, global service network and learning curve. Network effects are weak. Switching costs are very strong. Channel advantage comes from a close-to-customer global service system. Patents are valuable but not decisive. Data advantage comes from process learning across a broad installed base. Culture, operating capability and capital allocation add points. Overall, Lam's moat mainly comes from process complexity, customer qualification, a broad installed base and service network, rather than a single patent or sentiment-driven brand. I rate the moat 4/5 and see it as broadly stable to slightly widening.

Can it raise prices, resist inflation and stay profitable in downturns? Lam is not a consumer-products company with unlimited pricing power. But in advanced process steps, as long as its tools help customers improve yield, shorten ramps and support more complex device structures, it has outcome-based bargaining power. When FY2024 revenue declined 14.5%, the company still maintained a 47.3% gross margin, USD 3.828 billion in net income and USD 4.652 billion in operating cash flow. This shows that in an ordinary downcycle, it still has strong profitability and internal cash generation. The caution is that these high margins are not purely a structural moat. They also include cyclical benefits from demand, customer mix and product mix.

Management and Capital Allocation

Is management trustworthy? Tim Archer has served as CEO since late 2018, after many years as COO/President, giving him deep industry and operating experience. At the governance level, the board has audit, compensation and human resources, nominating and governance, and innovation and technology committees. More importantly, the company's disclosure style does not avoid industry volatility, export controls, competition, inventory, supply chain or valuation risks. Overall, the tone is relatively engineer-like, rather than story-driven.

Is management aligned with shareholders? This has two layers. First, absolute share ownership is not low, but relative to 1.261 billion shares outstanding it is not a heavy owner-operator alignment model. As of the 2025 record date, CEO Timothy Archer beneficially owned about 616,410 shares. All current directors and executives together owned about 959,030 shares, less than 0.1% of total shares outstanding of 1,261,032,300. Second, Lam's incentive structure has strong long-term shareholder orientation: in the 2025/2027 long-term incentives, 60% of target awards for the CEO and EVPs were market-based PRSUs tied to relative TSR, with the rest in RSUs. The PRSUs have three-year cliff vesting, and if absolute TSR is negative, maximum payout is capped at 100% of target. The company also has executive share-ownership requirements, a clawback policy, no single-trigger change-of-control provisions, and generally no tax gross-ups. 【View】 This is not a super-large-insider-owner model, but the governance framework is generally healthy.

Has past capital allocation been good? Overall, good, but not perfect. Lam has long used substantial cash for three things: first, reinvestment, especially in R&D and manufacturing/lab infrastructure; second, shareholder returns, including dividends and large buybacks; third, maintaining a prudent debt structure. FY2025 operating cash flow was USD 6.173 billion. Main uses included USD 3.422 billion of buybacks, USD 1.150 billion of dividends, USD 759 million of capex, and USD 507 million of debt principal and issuance-cost payments. In May 2024, the board added USD 10.0 billion to the buyback authorization. At FY2025 year-end, remaining repurchase capacity was still USD 7.517 billion. On dividends, annual dividends from FY2019 to FY2025, adjusted for the October 2024 10-for-1 stock split, rose roughly from USD 0.44/share to USD 0.92/share. In May 2026, the board approved another USD 0.26/quarter dividend.

Are buybacks rational? This is the key reason this report gives management 4 points rather than 5. Over the long run, buybacks have clearly reduced the share count. After adjusting the 2019-2023 share counts for the October 2024 10-for-1 split, Lam's basic weighted average shares fell from about 1.525 billion shares to 1.286 billion shares in FY2025, a cumulative six-year decline of about 15.7%, or nearly 2.8% annualized. That shows real share shrinkage. The issue is that buybacks create per-share value only when the price is reasonable or undervalued. Lam's FY2025 average repurchase price was roughly in the USD 67–84 per post-split share range, while the current share price is far above that range. If the company continues large buybacks at earnings valuations above 50–60x, I would view the marginal quality of capital allocation as deteriorating.

What about M&A and dilution? Lam has not made another acquisition at the scale of Novellus in recent years. Capital allocation has focused on organic R&D and shareholder returns. The company will evaluate bolt-on acquisitions, but the 10-K also candidly states that acquisitions may bring dilution, debt, goodwill and integration risks. On equity incentives, FY2025 stock-based compensation expense was USD 343 million, and the first nine months of FY2026 were USD 282 million. 【Fact】 This is not a small number. But against the backdrop of continued net repurchases, dilution is broadly covered. 【Inference】 As long as net share count keeps falling, I do not view it as a serious red flag. If buybacks slow while SBC remains high, however, the true ownership of "free cash flow" needs reassessment.

Financial Quality and Owner Earnings

The table below starts with the long-term financial profile. For comparability, I adjusted the 2019-2023 share counts for the October 2024 10-for-1 stock split. TTM is calculated on a trailing 12-month basis using FY2025 and FY2026 Q3. 【Fact】 From 2019 to 2025, revenue, operating cash flow and free cash flow all grew at roughly 11% annualized. FY2024 also saw a clear cyclical pullback, but FY2025 quickly recovered and reached a new high. That is a typical feature of a high-quality cyclical company.

Are profits real cash profits or accounting profits? Lam's earnings quality is generally good. FY2025 net income was USD 5.358 billion, and operating cash flow was USD 6.173 billion. TTM net income was about USD 6.708 billion, and TTM free cash flow was about USD 6.005 billion. Over the past 7 full fiscal years, except for 2021 and 2022 when inventory and working capital consumed more cash, free cash flow and net income have matched reasonably well over time, and free cash flow was not below net income in most years. 【Inference】 This suggests that Lam's profits are not merely paper profits. Most can be converted into cash.

How should we view inventory, receivables and payables? They must be monitored, and continuously. At FY2025 year-end, accounts receivable were USD 3.378 billion, inventory USD 4.308 billion, and accounts payable USD 854 million. By FY2026 Q3, accounts receivable had risen to USD 4.133 billion, accounts payable to USD 1.072 billion, while inventory had fallen to USD 4.000 billion. This reflects higher receivable usage as orders and shipments accelerate, while inventory management has not lost control. Working-capital changes contributed positively to operating cash flow in FY2025. On a TTM basis, however, there was still about USD 275 million of working-capital cash consumption, showing that an upcycle still requires some funding for growth. 【View】 I do not see obvious signs of an inventory blow-up or distorted receivables today, but this is the accounting and cycle indicator that deserves the closest tracking.

Is the balance sheet strong enough? As of FY2026 Q3, Lam had USD 4.751 billion in cash and cash equivalents. Total long-term debt plus current maturities was about USD 3.734 billion. Its commercial paper capacity had increased to USD 2.0 billion, but there was no balance outstanding at the time. In other words, the company was effectively still in a net cash position. Net debt/EBITDA was negative, and TTM interest coverage was about 45x by this report's calculation. This matters greatly for a cyclical company: in a downturn, it is less likely to be forced by the balance sheet into actions that damage shareholder value.

Is capex intensity high? Will growth consume more and more cash? Lam is not a fully asset-light model, but capex intensity is still lower than many manufacturing businesses. FY2019-2025 capex was roughly in the USD 200–760 million range. FY2025 capex was USD 759 million, about 4.1% of revenue. TTM capex was about USD 950 million. This shows that the company can expand capacity and strengthen lab/manufacturing infrastructure without consuming all cash flow. 【Inference】 Lam is a business where growth is not cheap, but it also does not require massive heavy-asset investment. As it grows, it usually becomes more profitable, rather than more cash-starved.

How good are returns on capital? On a simplified basis, Lam's capital returns are extremely high. Based on average shareholders' equity and average assets, FY2021-FY2025 ROE was roughly in the 46%–75% range, and ROA in the 20%–28% range. Using a simplified ROIC measure of "operating profit x (1 - 13% tax rate) / (shareholders' equity + interest-bearing debt - cash)," FY2025 was around 70%, with TTM even higher. One warning is necessary: 【Fact】 large net buybacks reduce book equity, so PB, ROE and ROIC are pushed up. 【View】 These indicators still show that the company is high quality, but one should not mechanically read all "high ROE" as operating moat. Financial structure and buybacks also amplify the numbers.

How should we view Owner Earnings? I use a more conservative treatment here.

  • 【Fact】 TTM net income was about USD 6.71 billion;

  • add back depreciation and amortization of about USD 420 million;

  • but do not simply treat stock-based compensation as "cost-free cash". I treat TTM SBC of about USD 377 million as a real shareholder cost;

  • maintenance capex cannot be observed directly from the statements. 【Assumption】 I conservatively estimate maintenance CAPEX at about 60% of total capex, or about USD 570 million;

  • then I include a neutral-to-conservative working-capital cash drag of about USD 200 million. On this basis, I estimate conservative Owner Earnings at about USD 5.8 billion. If SBC is not deducted and total capex is used, the figure is close to TTM free cash flow of USD 6.0 billion. If more capex is treated as growth investment, Owner Earnings would be slightly higher. In other words, Lam's true distributable cash-flow power is roughly in the USD 5.8–6.2 billion range. At the current market capitalization, that equals about 61–66x Owner Earnings.

Valuation, Margin of Safety and Opportunity Cost

Start with the most important valuation conclusion. I do not object to giving Lam a premium valuation, because it is indeed a high-quality company. But I object to equating "high quality" with "worth buying" when there is no margin of safety. As of 2026-05-22 00:15 UTC, LRCX's market capitalization was about USD 380.5 billion. On a trailing 12-month basis, PE was about 56x. Based on the TTM FCF calculated in this report, P/FCF was about 63x. Based roughly on FY2026 Q3 book equity, PB was close to 36x. TTM EV/EBITDA adjusted for net cash was about 48x. These are not "normal quality-stock premiums." They are pricing that reflects the market's high optimism about sustained high growth for many years.

Owner Earnings discounted method The valuation below is not a stock-price forecast. It is a framework for long-term owners to judge whether the purchase is worth it.

  • 【Fact】 The current conservative Owner Earnings base is USD 5.8 billion.

  • 【Assumption】 The valuation uses a 10-year DCF.

  • Conservative case: Owner Earnings grow 5% annually for the next 10 years, discount rate 11%, terminal growth 3%.

  • Base case: Owner Earnings grow 8% annually for the next 10 years, discount rate 10%, terminal growth 3.5%.

  • Bull case: Owner Earnings grow 11%–13% annually for the next 10 years, discount rate 8.5%–9%, terminal growth 4%. The core of this framework is not the numbers themselves. It requires you to admit that today's price already needs many years of high growth, high margins and high quality with little room for error to happen at the same time.

【Inference】 Even under somewhat optimistic assumptions, the current share price of about USD 302 is still above the upper end of the intrinsic-value range I can accept.

Relative valuation method Compared with peers, Lam is not cheap either. The current rough picture is:

  • LRCX: PE about 56.3x; P/FCF about 63x; EV/EBITDA about 48x;

  • AMAT: PE about 43.8x; P/FCF about 63.1x; EV/EBITDA about 36.4x;

  • KLAC: PE about 52.2x; P/FCF about 60.3x; EV/EBITDA about 41.3x;

  • ASML: PE about 52.0x; P/FCF about 57.7x; EV/EBITDA about 39–40x.

【View】 The key point here is not whether Lam is slightly cheaper than one peer. It is that the entire high-end semiconductor equipment group is expensive. Relative valuation can at most show that Lam has not detached completely from the group, but peer expensiveness must not be used to call it cheap.

Asset or liquidation value method For a company like Lam, the asset method can only provide a downside reference, not the core valuation. In FY2026 Q3, the company had USD 4.751 billion in cash, USD 4.133 billion in receivables, USD 4.000 billion in inventory, USD 2.854 billion in PP&E, and USD 10.207 billion in total liabilities. If receivables, inventory and fixed assets are discounted conservatively, shareholder liquidation value would likely correspond to only very low single-digit dollars per share. 【Fact】 This means the LRCX investment case is not asset revaluation. It is earning power and reinvestment capability. If future earning power is impaired, the balance sheet itself does not give you a thick hard-asset cushion.

Is the margin of safety enough? My answer is: no. The three most fragile valuation assumptions are: first, that AI/HBM-related equipment strength can last long enough; second, that Lam's high margins and high cash conversion will not fall because of competition, customer mix or export restrictions; third, that the market will be willing to give semiconductor equipment companies earnings multiples near or above 50x for a long time. If any of these fails, the company can still be a good company while today's purchase return is unattractive. For a balanced, somewhat conservative investor, this is the classic good company, bad price situation.

My price bands:

  • Conservative intrinsic-value range: USD 70–90

  • Fair intrinsic-value range: USD 100–140

  • Optimistic intrinsic-value range: USD 180–230

  • Ideal buy-price range: USD 80–110

  • Acceptable hold-price range: USD 110–180

  • Clearly overvalued range: above USD 180; for conservative new capital, USD 302 is already materially overvalued. This does not say where the stock will trade tomorrow. It says that if I allocate capital as if buying an entire business, I am unwilling to make the bet at this price.

Compared with the index, Treasuries and other opportunities If you have USD 1 of new capital today:

  • buying LRCX gives you an Owner Earnings/earnings yield of about 1.5%–1.8%;

  • buying the 10-year U.S. Treasury can roughly lock in a 4.57% nominal yield;

  • buying the S&P 500, at an overall PE of about 27x, gives an earnings yield around 3.7%. Therefore, unless you are highly confident that Lam can sustain above-industry growth over the next 10 years and avoid significant valuation compression, it is not clearly better than buying the index, much less clearly better than the risk-free yield. If I could hold only 5 assets, Lam today looks more like a high-quality watchlist name than an immediate core-portfolio candidate.

Risks, Checklist and Final Judgment

Most important risks and counterarguments First, cyclical risk: past financials already show that Lam fluctuates with fab capex. FY2024 revenue fell 14.5% year over year, and the company avoided serious damage only because its quality is high. If AI-related equipment demand normalizes, the market will rediscover that Lam is first a semiconductor equipment company, not an acyclical software company.

Second, competition and technology substitution risk: the 10-K clearly states that the company competes with Applied, Tokyo Electron, ASM, Hitachi, Screen, Semes and others in deposition, etch, clean and other areas. There is no such thing as permanent leadership in semiconductor equipment. Once a customer moves to another supplier at a key node and completes qualification, it can be very hard for Lam to win that position back.

Third, regulatory and China risk: in FY2025, two customers accounted for 17% and 15% of revenue, respectively, and China accounted for 34% of revenue in the latest quarter. The company repeatedly warns that future changes in U.S. Commerce Department rules, expansion of the Entity List, changes in license requirements, or further actions by the U.S. and China could materially affect revenue and competitive position. For Lam, this is not noise. It is an important variable in the investment thesis.

Fourth, supply-chain and cost risk: in both the 10-K and 10-Q, the company mentioned supply-chain constraints, material costs, tariffs and tariff-related spend affecting margins. Gross margin improved in the first nine months of FY2026 mainly because of better customer mix, but that was also partly offset by higher tariff-related spending. If future cost increases cannot be absorbed by higher utilization and product mix, margins could fall faster than investors expect.

Fifth, accounting and working-capital risk: Lam currently shows no obvious evidence of fraud or aggressive accounting, and allowance for doubtful accounts is not prominent.
