IES Holdings installs and builds the electrical guts of large buildings. Its crews run the cabling and power distribution inside data centers and other complex facilities, its factories fabricate generator enclosures and custom metal assemblies used in power systems, and a separate residential arm wires, plumbs and heats new houses for homebuilders. It is not one business but four, held together by skilled trade labor and project management rather than by a single product. The rating on this report is Watch.
The company has been transformed by the data-center construction boom. Revenue for the quarter ended 30 June 2026 rose 39.6% to $1.243 billion and diluted earnings per share reached $7.57, up from $3.81 a year earlier. Backlog — the work the company says it has lined up — climbed to roughly $4.5 billion, nearly 90% higher than in September 2025. Over four years, annual profit attributable to shareholders went from $34.8 million to $306.0 million. That is a genuine improvement, and most of the recent growth came from the existing business rather than from acquisitions: of the $352.5 million revenue increase in the June quarter, about 85% was organic.
Two things deserve caution. First, backlog is a looser word than it sounds. Only $2.80 billion of the $4.5 billion is enforceable contract commitment; the remaining $1.70 billion, about 38%, is signed agreements and letters of intent that are not yet legally binding. The company itself warns that backlog is neither guaranteed revenue nor guaranteed profit. Second, the profit margins are unusually high right now. The Commercial and Industrial segment earned a 30.5% gross margin in the June quarter on large, short data-center jobs — a level that reflects favorable project mix as much as skill, and one that a contractor cannot count on repeating. Meanwhile the residential arm is going backwards, with revenue down 6.3% as high mortgage rates hold back homebuilding.
The balance sheet is strong and the ownership is concentrated. There is no funded debt, the credit line was untouched at the end of June, and the company held $77.3 million of cash plus $310.6 million of marketable securities. Jeffrey Gendell, the executive chairman, controls roughly 51.9% of the shares through Tontine and related holdings, which means outside shareholders cannot outvote him. Note also that a two-for-one stock split was approved but had not taken effect at the time of this report: shares are distributed after the close on 21 August 2026, so every price in this report is on a pre-split basis and will look twice as large as the post-split quote.
On value, the report is blunt. At $768.43 the stock trades near 34 times reported earnings and closer to 40 times what the report calls owner earnings, which strips out gains on the company's securities portfolio because those are not electrical-contracting profits. The conservative fair value is $380 to $430, so the current price is 79% to 102% above it, and the ideal buy price is $300 to $340. Even the optimistic case implies only about 6% a year over three years, while the base case implies about -5% a year. Rating Watch: a better business at a demanding price. Research summary
IES Holdings is best understood as a hybrid electrical contractor and fabricator, rather than as a pure construction company or an electrical-equipment manufacturer. Its Communications and Commercial & Industrial operations install the physical network and power infrastructure inside data centers and other complex buildings. Infrastructure Solutions fabricates generator enclosures, metal assemblies and other custom-engineered products used in power-distribution systems. Residential installs electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems for homebuilders. The common thread is skilled labor, project execution and the management of electrical work, but the economics differ sharply: Communications and Commercial & Industrial are project businesses, Infrastructure Solutions has more manufacturing characteristics, and Residential remains tied to housing volumes and local pricing.
The market is trading IESC as an artificial-intelligence infrastructure beneficiary. That label is directionally justified. Fiscal third-quarter revenue for the period ended June 30, 2026 rose 39.6% to $1.243 billion, operating income reached $178.5 million, and GAAP diluted EPS rose to $7.57 from $3.81. Communications and Infrastructure Solutions are benefiting directly from data-center construction, while Commercial & Industrial has earned unusually high margins on short-duration data-center projects. Backlog rose to about $4.5 billion, nearly 90% above the September 2025 level, and remaining performance obligations reached $2.80 billion.
The unusual relationship between GAAP and adjusted EPS needs to be handled before judging the quarter. Adjusted diluted EPS was $6.70, below GAAP EPS of $7.57, because the non-GAAP reconciliation removes investment gains and other non-operating or nonrecurring items. IES recorded a $26.2 million pretax gain on marketable securities in the quarter and $80.4 million during the first nine months of fiscal 2026. GAAP earnings therefore capture an increasingly material securities portfolio whose quarterly mark-to-market movements do not measure electrical-contracting performance. This report uses adjusted operating earnings and estimated owner earnings for valuation, while presenting GAAP and adjusted EPS together whenever the latest quarter is discussed.
The backlog number also requires qualification. IES defines backlog more broadly than enforceable remaining performance obligations. Backlog includes RPO plus signed agreements and letters of intent that may not yet be legally enforceable, while RPO represents recognized contract commitments. The company warns that its calculation may not be comparable with peers and that backlog is neither guaranteed revenue nor guaranteed profit. At June 30, RPO represented about $2.80 billion of the $4.5 billion headline backlog. By subtraction, approximately $1.70 billion, or 38%, lay outside enforceable RPO. That subtraction is an inference from the disclosed totals, rather than a separately reported company figure. About $2.29 billion of RPO is expected to convert within 12 months.
This distinction goes to the heart of the bull-bear argument. Bulls see a company that has moved from a diversified electrical-services roll-up into an increasingly valuable position in the data-center power chain. IES can fabricate equipment, install structured cabling, staff large projects and operate through specialized local subsidiaries. Its balance sheet carries no funded debt, the revolving facility was unused at June 30, and the company has added roughly one million square feet of production capacity. Those attributes give it room to accept larger awards and invest ahead of growth.
Bears see a contractor earning peak project margins at the top of an extraordinary capital-spending cycle. Approximately 87% of fiscal 2025 revenue arose from fixed-price or unit-price work, and about 64% was recognized under percentage-of-completion accounting. Cost estimates can change as labor productivity, copper, aluminum, steel and component costs move. Favorable change orders and project mix can lift one quarter’s margin well above its sustainable level, just as estimating mistakes can reverse profit quickly. The Commercial & Industrial segment’s June-quarter gross margin reached 30.5%, helped by favorable execution on large, relatively short-duration data-center jobs; that is a poor number to capitalize indefinitely.
The recent growth is not mainly an acquisition illusion, although acquisitions matter greatly inside Infrastructure Solutions. Gulf Island contributed $51.7 million of June-quarter revenue. Consolidated revenue increased by $352.5 million, implying that approximately 15% of the dollar growth came from Gulf Island and roughly 85% came from the pre-existing businesses. Excluding Gulf Island, quarterly revenue would still have grown about 34%. Within Infrastructure Solutions, however, Gulf Island accounted for more than half of the segment’s $94.6 million year-over-year revenue increase. Consolidated momentum is therefore largely organic; the segment most closely resembling an equipment manufacturer has a much larger acquired component.
Residential provides a useful counterweight to the AI narrative. Its June-quarter revenue declined 6.3%, gross margin fell to 22.2% from 28.1%, and management cited housing affordability, lower starts and pricing pressure. This shows that IES has not escaped economic cyclicality; one part of the company is being pulled upward by data centers while another is being held back by elevated mortgage rates and homebuilder caution.
Financial quality has improved substantially since fiscal 2022. Revenue rose from $2.17 billion in fiscal 2022 to $3.37 billion in fiscal 2025, while attributable net income rose from $34.8 million to $306.0 million. Operating cash flow increased from $16.3 million to $286.1 million. Across fiscal 2021 through fiscal 2025, cumulative operating cash flow was approximately $729 million against approximately $735 million of attributable net income, a ratio close to 0.99. The long-run match is satisfactory, although individual years are volatile because working capital moves with project billings and receivables.
Fiscal 2026 cash flow needs a second adjustment. Reported operating cash flow was $239.4 million for the first nine months, versus $355.6 million of consolidated net income. The operating cash-flow statement included approximately $153.9 million of net purchases of marketable securities because those holdings are classified as trading securities. Adding that discretionary securities purchase back for analytical purposes produces underlying cash generation of roughly $393 million before capital expenditure. The securities still consumed cash and carry investment risk, but their accounting classification makes the contracting operations appear less cash-generative than they were.
IES is not protected by a software-like moat. Its advantages are a workforce exceeding 10,000 people, local licensing and customer relationships, a record of executing large mission-critical projects, access to fabrication capacity and a decentralized operating structure that keeps accountability close to individual jobs. These advantages can produce repeat business and better bid selection. They remain vulnerable to competitors hiring the same tradespeople, customers rebidding work, projects being delayed, and margins being surrendered through one poor estimate.
Governance is unusually concentrated. Jeffrey Gendell, founder of Tontine and IES’s executive chairman, retains effective control. The latest June 2026 Form 4 aggregate of 10,406,559 included 65,069 phantom stock units and various direct, trust and Tontine holdings. Excluding phantom units, beneficially held common shares were approximately 10.34 million, or 51.9% of the 19.92 million shares outstanding at June 30. The implied non-Gendell common-share float was about 48.1%. This calculation corrects the research brief’s suggestion that the entire 10,406,559 total was indirect and that 131,325 shares remained directly held; the June 12 filing instead showed 44,599 direct shares after the reported sales.
Four Form 4 filings covering May 6 through June 12 report aggregate dispositions of approximately 180,600 shares, equal to about 1.7% of the starting reported position. The sales occurred at weighted-average prices broadly between the high $600s and mid-$700s and likely generated approximately $125 million to $130 million of proceeds. The filings state ownership mechanics, not motive. Diversification, taxes, estate planning and valuation judgment are all possible explanations; none is established by the filings. The selling modestly increases float but leaves Tontine above 50% control.
The capital market has already paid heavily for the transformation. IESC closed at $339.94 on August 7, 2025 and at $768.43 on August 6, 2026, a gain of approximately 126% before the pending split. The current price is 55% above its 52-week average of about $495 and only modestly below its recent record close. Using trailing GAAP EPS of approximately $22.51, derived from fiscal 2025 EPS plus the change in nine-month EPS, the stock trades near 34 times trailing earnings. Removing the net investment gains pushes the normalized multiple toward the high 30s.
The qualitative portrait is a company in transition. IES has proved that a decentralized electrical-services group can evolve into a major data-center infrastructure supplier and materially raise margins. The remaining question is whether recent margins describe the new normal or the favorable end of the normal range. That disagreement matters more than whether data-center construction remains healthy in the next few quarters: the share price already presumes that strong demand will translate into durable, manufacturing-like earnings rather than cyclical contracting profits.
Company journey and financial evolution
Origins and listing path
IES was formed in Delaware in June 1997 to consolidate the fragmented US electrical-contracting industry. It began operations on January 30, 1998 by acquiring 16 electrical businesses concurrently with its initial public offering. The founding transaction paid approximately $53.4 million in cash and issued 12.3 million shares to the acquired businesses. The IPO sold seven million shares at $13 each, producing $78.8 million of net proceeds, followed by an overallotment of 1.05 million shares that generated a further $12.7 million.
The original proposition was a classic late-1990s roll-up. The electrical-contracting market was large, local and fragmented; a national company could supply capital, purchasing power and systems while retaining the customer relationships of the acquired operators. IES entered the market with run-rate revenue near $313 million. By fiscal 1999 it had bought another 62 electrical and cabling contractors, and pro forma revenue reached about $1.3 billion. The scale arrived much faster than the common operating culture.
The IPO story therefore differed from today’s. Investors were initially buying consolidation economics: more acquisitions, national reach and overhead leverage. The present story is based on specialist capacity in data-center cabling and power equipment. The legal entity survived, but the investment identity changed.
The roll-up and repair period
The first stage, from 1997 through the middle of the following decade, was acquisition-led expansion followed by repair. IES purchased dozens of businesses with cash, stock and debt, including $150 million of subordinated notes issued in 1999. That structure exposed shareholders to the familiar roll-up problem: reported scale grew faster than the ability to impose consistent estimating discipline, project controls and capital allocation. By 2005, credit analysis focused on divestitures and the company’s plans to shed operations representing hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue.
The lasting impact was cultural. The company did not become a tightly integrated national contractor. It developed into a holding company whose operating subsidiaries retained local identities, management and profit responsibility. That decentralization later became useful: electrical contracting depends heavily on local labor pools, licenses, customer relationships and estimators. It also makes enterprise-wide risk control harder, because a poor project can originate deep inside a subsidiary.
Tontine control and portfolio rebuilding
The second stage was the creation of a controlled, decentralized holding company. Tontine accumulated a majority stake, Jeffrey Gendell became chairman in 2016 and later chief executive in 2020, and the company changed its name from Integrated Electrical Services to IES Holdings in 2016. By fiscal 2024, IES’s shareholder-return index had risen from 100 in 2019 to 969.5, compared with 156.6 for the Russell 2000, showing that the market had begun to reward the rebuilt portfolio well before the latest AI acceleration.
During this period, the group expanded Residential through acquisitions, built Communications around mission-critical infrastructure and assembled fabrication assets inside Infrastructure Solutions. Revenue increased from about $696 million in fiscal 2016 to $1.19 billion in fiscal 2020 and $1.54 billion in fiscal 2021. The growth was meaningful, though still associated mainly with regional expansion, housing and a wider mix of electrical work rather than a single data-center thesis.
The pandemic and supply-chain period exposed the limits of that portfolio. Fiscal 2022 revenue rose 41% to about $2.17 billion, helped by acquisitions and price increases, but adjusted EPS fell to $1.88 from $3.70. Copper and other material inflation, labor inefficiencies, supply disruptions and project costs compressed margins. The same decentralized assets that later generated high returns were not immune to adverse contract economics.
Data-center reacceleration
The third stage began during fiscal 2023 and accelerated through 2026. Communications revenue increased as data-center customers expanded capacity. Infrastructure Solutions benefited from demand for generator enclosures and custom-engineered electrical products. Commercial & Industrial improved bid selection and began recognizing favorable margins on large data-center work. Consolidated gross margin increased from 18.7% in fiscal 2023 to 24.2% in fiscal 2024 and 25.5% in fiscal 2025. Operating income rose from $159.8 million to $300.9 million and then $383.5 million.
This was more than a volume cycle. Management reported disciplined bidding, favorable contract pricing, improved project execution and better manufacturing efficiency. Communications gross margin rose to 23.2% in fiscal 2025 from 19.7% in fiscal 2024. Infrastructure Solutions had already expanded capacity through the Greiner acquisition and other investments. Commercial & Industrial’s 2024 margin improvement came partly from a large data-center project, favorable scope additions and more selective bidding.
The central tension is visible in those explanations. Disciplined bidding and operating efficiency can persist. Favorable scope additions and unusually profitable projects cannot be forecast with the same confidence.
Capacity expansion and the management transition
IES intensified physical investment in fiscal 2025 and 2026. Capital expenditure rose from $17.7 million in fiscal 2023 to $45.2 million in fiscal 2024, $67.3 million in fiscal 2025 and $123.0 million in the first nine months of fiscal 2026. The company acquired Greiner for $67 million in 2024, completed additional acquisitions in fiscal 2025, and paid approximately $143 million for business combinations in the first nine months of fiscal 2026, principally Gulf Island.
Gulf Island broadened Infrastructure Solutions’ fabrication base and supplied $89.2 million of revenue from acquisition through June 30, 2026. IES also added facilities in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Abilene, Texas, contributing to approximately one million square feet of added production capacity. The expansion gives IES more ability to accept large awards, but it also raises fixed costs and creates an integration test. Gulf Island generated only $0.6 million of operating income on $89.2 million of post-acquisition revenue through June, far below the margin of the legacy Infrastructure Solutions business.
Matthew Simmes became president and chief executive, while Gendell moved to executive chairman. The arrangement separates day-to-day operations from the controlling owner’s capital-allocation role, although both remain non-independent directors and Tontine retains majority voting control. Tracy McLauchlin remains chief financial officer and treasurer.

The table shows two distinct eras. Fiscal 2021–2022 delivered revenue growth without reliable margin or cash-flow expansion. Fiscal 2023–2026 delivered both. From 2022 to 2025, revenue grew about 56%, while attributable net income increased almost ninefold. Gross-margin improvement, rather than revenue alone, explains the earnings inflection.
Cash conversion is acceptable over a full cycle but lumpy within it. Aggregate operating cash flow from fiscal 2021 through 2025 was approximately 0.99 times aggregate attributable net income. Fiscal 2022 produced only $16.3 million of operating cash flow because working capital absorbed cash. Fiscal 2023 and 2024 reversed much of that effect. This pattern is normal for percentage-of-completion contractors: billing timing, retainage, receivables and contract assets can dominate a single year.
At June 30, 2026, trade receivables were $722.5 million, retainage was $139.0 million, contract assets were $120.5 million and inventory was $133.6 million. Those four accounts totaled more than $1.1 billion. The company also carried $77.3 million of cash and $310.6 million of marketable securities, with no funded borrowings and approximately $287.8 million available under a $300 million revolving facility. The balance sheet is financially sound, but the growing securities portfolio introduces an additional source of earnings and capital-allocation volatility.
Maintenance capital expenditure is not disclosed. A reasonable analytical estimate is approximately $45 million to $60 million annually, anchored to the present depreciation run rate and the pre-expansion capital-spending base. On that basis, much of the current expenditure above $60 million represents growth capital for factories, warehouses and data-center support assets. This split is an assumption: acquisitions, facility relocations and rapidly rising depreciation prevent precise classification from public filings. Depreciation was $28.9 million in fiscal 2025 and approximately $45.7 million in the first nine months of fiscal 2026, while capital expenditure was $67.3 million and $123.0 million, respectively.
Price and valuation history
IESC’s long-term share-price history contains three broad regimes. The original roll-up was valued on acquisition-driven growth, then lost credibility as leverage and integration risks surfaced. The rebuilding period was priced as a small, controlled contractor with limited liquidity. The current period is priced as an AI-power-infrastructure growth asset.
The magnitude of the re-rating is difficult to separate from the earnings improvement. The stock’s fiscal 2019–2024 total-return index increased almost tenfold while diluted EPS rose from a much lower base to $9.89. Since August 7, 2025, the price has more than doubled again, while trailing GAAP EPS has risen from approximately $15 to about $22.5. Both earnings growth and multiple expansion have therefore contributed.
At the August 6, 2026 close, IESC traded around 34 times trailing GAAP EPS and roughly 31 times trailing operating income after adjusting for net cash and securities. An owner-earnings basis that removes investment gains produces a P/E closer to 38–40 times. The market has shifted from valuing IES as a contractor to valuing it between a high-growth specialty contractor and an electrical-equipment beneficiary. That shift is justified only if recent project margins prove durable.
Business model, moat and industry cycle
Revenue structure and current segment economics
The June quarter shows how decisively the mix has changed.

Communications is now the largest quarterly segment and the most important source of organic volume growth. It designs, installs and maintains structured cabling, network infrastructure and related systems in data centers, high-tech manufacturing and distribution facilities. Its economics depend on customer relationships, skilled technicians, the ability to mobilize at large sites and disciplined project selection.
Infrastructure Solutions has the highest manufacturing content and the strongest reported gross margin. It produces custom-engineered enclosures, metal fabrications and related equipment for power-generation and data-center applications. Its factories create more fixed-cost absorption than a field contractor, allowing margin to rise when capacity is well utilized. Gulf Island expands the addressable product set but currently dilutes segment margin.
Commercial & Industrial has supplied the most dramatic recent margin surprise. Revenue more than doubled in the June quarter, and gross margin reached 30.5%. Management attributed the result to large, short-duration data-center projects with favorable margins. The duration and wording matter: the work converts quickly, creating less backlog than a multi-year project, and current profitability reflects project mix that may not repeat.
Residential remains the largest full-year segment on fiscal 2025 figures, but it has ceased to drive incremental profit. It serves single-family and multifamily homebuilders and provides plumbing and HVAC in selected markets. The business has local density and customer relationships, but homebuilders possess substantial bargaining power and can pressure price when starts slow. Fiscal 2025 revenue fell 6.1%, and operating income declined to $103.8 million from $137.3 million.
Cost structure and operating leverage
Direct labor, subcontractors, materials and jobsite expenses make much of IES’s cost base variable. The less flexible costs include experienced project managers, estimators, fabrication personnel, branch overhead, factories, warehouses, training and corporate systems. The expanding manufacturing footprint raises fixed costs, but it can also increase margins when volume absorbs them.
Fixed-price contracts create asymmetrical operating leverage. A well-estimated project can produce high incremental margin because overhead is already staffed. A poorly estimated project can turn incremental revenue into losses. IES reported that 87.1% of fiscal 2025 revenue came from fixed-price or unit-price contracts and only 12.9% from time-and-materials work. Approximately 64% of revenue used percentage-of-completion recognition.
Commodity risk is partly contractual and partly temporal. Copper, aluminum, steel, switchgear and electronic components can rise after a bid has been submitted. IES says it may be unable to pass all increases to customers. A backlog created during favorable pricing can be profitable; the same nominal backlog built with weak escalation protection can become a liability.
Labor is the hardest cost to solve quickly. IES employed 10,283 people at September 2025, with fewer than 30 represented by unions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects electrician employment to grow 9% from 2024 to 2034, with about 81,000 openings each year. Industry surveys identify worker shortages as a leading source of project delay. IES’s training investment and local operating structure help, but they do not eliminate wage inflation or the risk of insufficient crews.
Moat assessment
IES’s real moat is execution capacity in a constrained labor and supply environment. It can field thousands of skilled workers, hold licenses across many jurisdictions, coordinate large mission-critical projects and fabricate components whose lead times have become valuable. This combination reduces the number of counterparties a data-center customer must manage.
The second moat is accumulated customer trust. Data-center infrastructure failure is expensive, and customers favor contractors that can repeat a design across campuses, meet schedules and document work. IES does not disclose customer names, repeat-order rates or project-level retention, so the depth of this advantage cannot be measured directly. The speed of backlog growth and Communications revenue provides indirect evidence that customers are awarding more work.
The third moat is the integration of field installation and custom fabrication. Pure contractors can source equipment but do not necessarily control fabrication. Equipment manufacturers sell products but do not always manage installation. IES occupies the space between them. That position can shorten schedules and improve design feedback, though the company has not disclosed enough cross-segment revenue or bundled-award data to prove that integration routinely changes customer decisions.
The decentralized structure is both moat and risk. Local operators retain customer intimacy and accountability. The holding company supplies capital, acquisitions, insurance, systems and governance. This model has produced strong results since fiscal 2023. It can also conceal inconsistent estimating or safety practices until a project deteriorates.
Brand, patents and network effects are weak moat categories for IES. Customers buy execution, labor availability, schedule certainty and price. A competitor with the right workforce and local credibility can take work. Residential is particularly contestable. The moat is strongest in complex, repeat data-center programs and weakest in commodity-like installations.
Management, ownership and capital allocation
Gendell’s capital-allocation record includes both strong and debatable elements. The company entered the present cycle with no funded debt, repurchased shares at prices far below the current quote, acquired fabrication assets before demand accelerated and invested in capacity rather than waiting for shortages to resolve. Fiscal 2024 and 2025 treasury-stock purchases totaled approximately $85.7 million, although some repurchases covered employee withholding rather than opportunistic buybacks.
The growing securities portfolio is less obviously connected to operating strategy. Marketable securities increased from $104.6 million at September 2025 to $310.6 million at June 2026, and nine-month pretax gains reached $80.4 million. These investments enhanced GAAP EPS but complicate assessment of core returns and expose shareholders to positions whose composition is not fully detailed in the summary disclosures.
Control creates alignment and a governance discount at the same time. Gendell’s economic stake is substantial, so the consequences of poor capital allocation fall heavily on him. Tontine can also control director elections and most shareholder matters. The board has classified Jeffrey Gendell, David Gendell and Matthew Simmes as non-independent, and the company maintains a related-party office sublease with Tontine. The proxy says the sublease is at market-consistent rates, but ordinary shareholders cannot change control through normal voting coalitions.
No material weakness in internal control was reported for fiscal 2025, and Ernst & Young issued unqualified opinions on the financial statements and internal controls. Long-duration contract estimates remain a critical audit matter because small revisions to forecast costs can alter percentage-of-completion profit.
Industry structure and cycle
IES participates in several cycles at once: data-center capital expenditure, US nonresidential construction, housing, electrical-equipment availability and skilled-labor supply. The current dominant cycle is data-center electrification.
The structural demand case is unusually strong. The International Energy Agency reported that electricity use by data centers rose 17% in 2025 and expects global data-center consumption to double by 2030, with AI-focused demand tripling. Capital expenditure by five large technology companies exceeded $400 billion in 2025 and was expected to rise a further 75% in 2026. The US Energy Information Administration identifies data-center load as the dominant driver of long-term US electricity-demand growth.
That demand does not convert into construction in a straight line. Grid interconnections, transformers, turbines, permits, community opposition and power availability can delay projects. The IEA describes tightening supply chains and planning systems as near-term bottlenecks. In Northern Virginia, projected load growth is concentrated enough to alter regional peak-demand planning. Delays can shift IES revenue between quarters or cause customers to redesign campuses, even if long-term computing demand remains intact.
The industry profit pool is distributed unevenly. Semiconductor and server suppliers capture high intellectual-property margins. Power-equipment manufacturers benefit from scarce products and long lead times. Contractors earn lower structural margins and carry execution risk, although scarcity of skilled labor and disciplined bidding can temporarily lift returns. IES’s Infrastructure Solutions business moves it closer to the better part of that profit pool, but most group revenue still comes from labor-intensive contracting.
Regulation is mostly operational rather than existential. Electrical licenses, building codes, OSHA requirements and environmental permits affect the ability to work and the cost of compliance. Tariffs can raise metals and component costs. Immigration enforcement can tighten construction labor. The company is predominantly domestic, so geopolitical exposure works mainly through equipment supply chains, materials and customer capital spending rather than overseas revenue.
Competitive landscape and current fundamentals
Choosing the peer set
IES has no single perfect comparable. EMCOR and MYR Group are contractor peers with percentage-of-completion economics. Quanta Services is a larger infrastructure-services platform valued for utility-grid exposure, scale and execution. Sterling Infrastructure has become a high-growth data-center site and electrical-infrastructure company with manufacturing-like margins in selected operations. Eaton, Hubbell and nVent occupy the equipment side of the chain, but their product margins, distribution channels and installed bases make their multiples unsuitable as direct anchors.
The correct approach is therefore a blended comparison: contractor economics establish the floor, while exposure to fabricated data-center products explains part of the premium.

EMCOR became the scaled, diversified mechanical-and-electrical contractor. Customers choose it for national reach, a broad technical workforce and the ability to bundle mechanical, electrical and facility services. Its June-quarter organic revenue growth was almost 20%, operating margin reached 10.6%, and RPO rose to about $17.1 billion. EMCOR’s broader end-market diversification and longer cash-flow history justify a quality premium to ordinary contractors, yet it trades below IESC on headline trailing P/E.
MYR became the closer electrical-project comparator. It serves transmission, distribution and commercial-and-industrial customers, with less manufacturing content than IES. Its June-quarter gross margin was 13.2% and operating margin about 6.3%, far below IES. Customers choose MYR for electrical construction capability and utility relationships; investors price it as a contractor, not an equipment supplier. IES’s margin premium is substantial, but so is the risk that project mix normalizes toward contractor levels.
Quanta became the dominant North American energy-infrastructure services platform. Approximately 70% of its 2025 revenue came from utility and power customers, and its backlog reached $53.4 billion after the June 2026 quarter. It has greater scale, customer diversity, training resources and exposure to grid investment than IES. Its valuation relies on adjusted earnings, acquisition integration and a long runway in transmission and power demand; the GAAP P/E overstates the comparable premium.
Sterling became the closest narrative comparator. Its E-Infrastructure business serves data centers, semiconductor facilities and manufacturing projects, and recent acquisitions added electrical capabilities. Signed backlog reached $4.3 billion and combined backlog $5.6 billion. Sterling earns higher margins in site development and selected infrastructure niches, but its 2026 growth includes a significant acquisition effect. Like IESC, it has been re-rated from a cyclical contractor into an AI-infrastructure asset.
IES occupies a narrower but distinctive niche. It is smaller than EMCOR and Quanta, more profitable than MYR, and more directly involved in internal data-center cabling and custom power fabrication than most field contractors. Its weakness is customer and project concentration inside a relatively small earnings base. A single favorable program can move group margin more than it would at EMCOR or Quanta.

The sequence shows acceleration rather than a single quarter of easy comparison. Revenue was approximately flat between fiscal Q4 2025 and Q1 2026, rose in Q2 and then jumped 28% sequentially in Q3. Operating margin increased from approximately 11%–12% in the first three quarters shown to 14.4% in Q3.
The earnings progression contains three one-off or potentially temporary influences. Securities gains raised GAAP earnings. Gulf Island added revenue but little operating income. Commercial & Industrial benefited from unusually favorable project mix. Adjusted EPS corrects the first influence, but not the other two.
Backlog quality and conversion
IES’s September 2025 backlog was $2.374 billion, comprising $1.687 billion of RPO and $687 million of other customer-supported agreements. At June 2026, backlog had risen to $4.5 billion and RPO to $2.802 billion. RPO therefore grew 66%, while the broader backlog almost doubled. The non-RPO component expanded from about $687 million to an inferred $1.70 billion.
This growth is positive but lower-quality at the margin. Enforceable RPO represented about 71% of backlog in September and 62% in June. The fall does not prove cancellations will occur; it shows that letters of intent and not-yet-enforceable awards account for a larger share of the headline. Investors should track RPO growth separately from backlog growth.
The company expects approximately 82% of current RPO to convert within 12 months. That creates near-term visibility, subject to project schedules and change orders. The residual converts later and carries more exposure to customer redesign, permitting and power availability.
Customer concentration remains insufficiently disclosed. No customer exceeded 10% of consolidated fiscal 2025 revenue, versus one Residential customer at 12% in fiscal 2024. That test permits several hyperscalers or developers to contribute high-single-digit shares. The company does not disclose backlog concentration by customer, hyperscaler, campus or project, so the portfolio may be more concentrated than the consolidated annual-revenue threshold suggests.
Organic growth and acquisition contribution
Gulf Island contributed $51.7 million of Q3 revenue and $1.8 million of operating income. Consolidated Q3 revenue excluding Gulf Island was about $1.191 billion, 33.8% above the prior year. On a dollar-growth basis, Gulf Island supplied approximately 14.7% and legacy operations approximately 85.3%. The consolidated surge was roughly 85% organic.
Inside Infrastructure Solutions, the conclusion is different. Segment revenue rose by $94.6 million, while Gulf Island contributed $51.7 million. Roughly 55% of segment growth was acquired, and the legacy business grew approximately one-third. Gulf Island’s low initial margin also explains why segment gross margin declined to 34.0% from 35.6% despite strong demand.
Capacity additions can sustain growth beyond the acquisition anniversary, but utilization will determine returns. If data-center orders remain strong, the new footprint should absorb overhead and raise Gulf Island margins. If awards slow, IES will carry more factories and personnel against a lower revenue base.
What the market is trading
Real fundamentals support the narrative: RPO has grown 66% since September, legacy revenue grew about 34% in Q3, and operating income rose 78% year over year. The balance sheet can finance expansion without debt.
The market narrative goes further. It implicitly treats data-center demand as a long-duration secular wave, assumes IES will preserve a significant portion of current margin gains and gives the company partial credit for equipment-manufacturer economics. The price has risen approximately 126% in a year, faster than the increase in trailing normalized earnings.
The key disagreement is therefore margin durability. Bulls can be right about data-center megawatts and still earn a poor return if the stock’s multiple falls before earnings catch up. Bears can be right about eventual normalization and still be early if RPO converts rapidly and new capacity lifts margins for several years.
Valuation, risks and tracking
Cash-flow passthrough and owner earnings
Five-year operating cash flow approximately matched cumulative attributable net income, producing a conversion ratio near 0.99. This is adequate for a contractor. The annual variation is large: fiscal 2021 and 2022 converted poorly; fiscal 2023–2025 converted strongly.
Reported first-nine-month 2026 conversion was only 0.67, but this includes $153.9 million of net purchases of trading securities. Excluding those purchases solely to assess the contracting operations, cash flow was approximately 1.11 times consolidated net income. After $123 million of capital expenditure, underlying free cash flow was approximately $270 million, versus reported free cash flow of about $116 million.
Maintenance capital expenditure is estimated at $45 million to $60 million a year. At a normalized adjusted net-income run rate of approximately $390 million to $410 million, adding depreciation and deducting estimated maintenance capital expenditure leaves owner earnings broadly near $391 million to $426 million before normalized working-capital leakage. With approximately 20 million diluted shares, normalized owner earnings are about $19.55 to $21.30 per share.
The headline trailing GAAP P/E is around 34 times. The owner-earnings P/E is roughly 36–39 times. The difference is less than 30% but still material, and the owner-earnings basis is more suitable because securities gains are not part of the contracting franchise.
Historical and peer valuation
IESC’s current valuation is in the high end of its modern history. The company was traditionally valued as a small contractor with a control discount, cyclical earnings and limited liquidity. It now trades above EMCOR’s headline P/E, close to Sterling’s and above MYR’s, while remaining below Quanta’s acquisition-distorted GAAP multiple.
A premium to MYR is justified by IES’s higher margins, net-cash position and fabrication exposure. A premium to EMCOR is harder to defend: EMCOR has broader customer diversification, greater scale and comparable data-center exposure. IES’s faster growth offsets part of that difference, but the current premium leaves little protection against normalization.
Valuation is also sensitive to classification. Applying an equipment-style multiple to Infrastructure Solutions and contractor multiples to the other segments can produce a higher sum-of-the-parts value than a consolidated contractor P/E. That premium should be limited because Infrastructure Solutions supplied only about 15% of fiscal 2025 revenue, and more than half of its latest quarterly growth came from an acquisition with low initial operating margin.
Absolute valuation scenarios
The following model uses a three-year horizon, approximately 20 million diluted pre-split shares and normalized owner earnings. Revenue and margin assumptions are research estimates, not company guidance.

This is valuation-scenario analysis within a research framework, not investment advice.
The conservative range assumes that data-center revenue remains above historical levels but current margins partly unwind. It does not assume a recession or project losses. The base case assumes IES has established a structurally better business, but that June-quarter C&I margins cannot be repeated across the group. The optimistic case requires both strong end-market demand and sustained execution.
A discounted cash-flow cross-check produces a similar conclusion. Using owner earnings around $400 million, medium-term growth of 10%–12%, a 9%–10% discount rate and terminal growth of 3% results in equity value broadly in the $600–$700 range. Moving value above $900 requires either sustained mid-teens cash-flow growth or a lower discount rate, both of which leave little room for a contractor downturn.
Expectation gap
The market appears to price annual owner earnings rising from approximately $400 million toward $600 million without a major multiple contraction. That outcome can occur if Communications and Infrastructure Solutions continue growing above 20%, Gulf Island margins converge toward the legacy segment, and C&I retains a materially higher margin than its pre-data-center history.
The next earnings print will be judged less on headline backlog than on four narrower indicators: RPO growth, the RPO-to-backlog ratio, organic Communications growth and segment margin. Another backlog increase driven primarily by unenforceable agreements would not carry the same information as enforceable RPO growth. A lower C&I margin accompanied by healthy RPO could represent normal mix; a simultaneous margin decline and RPO slowdown would support the peak-cycle case.
Analyst coverage is relatively limited for a company of IES’s current market capitalization, increasing the probability that individual quarters move expectations sharply. Public earnings calendars currently estimate the fiscal fourth-quarter report around November 20–27, 2026, but the company had not announced a confirmed date by the research base date.
Margin-of-safety recheck
The current price is 79%–102% above the conservative fair-value range of $380–$430. The margin of safety relative to that scenario is zero.
The most fragile base-case assumption is an operating margin near 12%. Cutting the expected margin and associated growth benefit to 70% lowers normalized owner EPS toward $21–$23. At a 23x–24x multiple, the revised base value falls to approximately $500–$550.
If owner earnings remain flat near $19.50 per share for three years, the current earnings yield is about 2.5%. The official Treasury curve on August 6 showed even the two-year yield at 4.25%, and longer-duration government securities offered a materially higher cash yield than IESC’s normalized earnings yield. With no dividend and no earnings growth, multiple normalization would dominate the return. There is no margin of safety at this buy price.
This is a good-business, demanding-price case. Waiting carries an opportunity cost if the optimistic scenario develops: backlog conversion and margin gains could keep the stock elevated. Buying now carries a larger valuation risk because the base scenario does not offer an adequate expected return.
Margin-of-safety sufficiency verdict: none.
Permanent-loss risks
The first major risk is data-center order deceleration. Probability is medium and impact is high. The observable indicators are declining RPO, a falling RPO-to-backlog ratio, project delays and lower Communications organic growth. The transmission path runs from delayed campuses to lower crew utilization, weaker factory absorption, margin contraction and a reversal of the AI multiple. The IEA expects strong aggregate demand, but also identifies power, grid and permitting bottlenecks that can interrupt construction schedules.
The second risk is fixed-price execution. Probability is medium and impact is high. The warning signs are rising contract assets, negative project revisions, gross margin falling despite revenue growth and higher self-insurance liabilities. Approximately 87% of revenue uses fixed-price or unit-price structures. A few poorly estimated projects can erase gains from many successful jobs, particularly when labor and electrical equipment remain constrained.
The third risk is margin normalization without a revenue collapse. Probability is high and impact is high because the valuation capitalizes current profitability. C&I’s 30.5% gross margin and Infrastructure Solutions’ 34% margin are exceptional for contractor-heavy operations. A shift toward lower-margin projects could reduce EPS even while backlog converts. The observable indicator is segment gross-margin compression of three to five percentage points with stable revenue.
The fourth risk is backlog quality and concentration. Probability is medium and impact is high. The company does not disclose customer or project concentration inside backlog, while about 38% of headline backlog sits outside RPO. Cancellation or redesign by one hyperscaler could reduce future revenue more than the consolidated customer disclosure suggests. The warning signs are backlog growing faster than RPO, conversion extending beyond 12 months and customer advances or billings changing abruptly.
The fifth risk is capital allocation and governance. Probability is medium and impact is medium. Tontine retains effective control, the securities portfolio has grown above $300 million, and approximately 180,600 insider-associated shares were sold in May and June. A further selldown could improve liquidity but weaken perceived alignment. A large securities loss or acquisition at peak-cycle prices would reduce book value and confidence. Observable indicators are additional Form 4 sales, Tontine ownership falling below 50%, securities exposure continuing to rise and acquired margins failing to improve.
The sixth risk is valuation compression. Probability is high and impact is high. A decline from approximately 39 times normalized owner earnings to 24 times, with earnings unchanged, would reduce the price toward $470. No operating crisis is required. A slower-growth label, a rotation away from AI infrastructure or declining peer multiples would be sufficient.
Catalysts and tracking dashboard
Positive catalysts include another quarter of enforceable RPO growth, organic Communications expansion above 25%, Gulf Island margin improvement, new capacity reaching targeted utilization, continued debt-free cash generation and evidence that the C&I margin remains above its pre-2024 level.
Negative catalysts include a decline in RPO, a backlog mix increasingly composed of letters of intent, project-cost revisions, C&I gross margin falling toward the mid-teens, a housing downturn spreading from Residential into commercial markets, material securities losses or another large controlling-holder sale.

The dashboard should be read together. Lower RPO growth alone may reflect timing; lower RPO, lower Communications growth and falling margin together would indicate a cycle turn. A decline in C&I margin toward 20% would still leave the business above its older economics and should not automatically be read as failure. The important distinction is normalization versus project losses.
Cross-synthesis and final conclusion
What the company has proved
Vertically, IES has proved three capabilities. It survived the failure of the original acquisition-roll-up logic, rebuilt around decentralized operating companies and allocated capital into electrical niches before those niches became central to the AI-power theme. Revenue has grown almost fivefold since fiscal 2016, and the company did not need balance-sheet leverage to fund the latest expansion.
Its success since fiscal 2023 came from a combination of era tailwinds and execution. The era supplied hyperscaler capital expenditure, power scarcity and demand for new data-center campuses. Management supplied capacity, acquisitions, disciplined bids and project delivery. Luck contributed through favorable project mix and securities gains, but neither explains the entire improvement. The 34% legacy revenue growth in Q3 and the increase in Communications’ full-year gross margin indicate a real operating change.
Those success factors remain present, though not equally durable. Data-center power demand has years of structural support. Skilled labor and electrical equipment remain constrained. IES’s factories and customer relationships continue to matter. Favorable change orders, peak project margin and the rate of order acceleration are less durable.
Horizontally, IES’s advantage is its position between field contractors and equipment suppliers. It can install the communications backbone, perform electrical construction and fabricate selected power-system components. EMCOR has greater scale and diversification; Quanta has deeper utility exposure and training infrastructure; MYR is a purer electrical contractor; Sterling has stronger site-development economics. IES’s mixed model creates more upside than a conventional contractor when capacity is tight, but it creates more analytical uncertainty because one multiple does not fit every segment.
The weakness is structural in Residential and cyclical elsewhere. Residential remains sensitive to housing starts and price competition. Fixed-price risk is embedded in Communications and C&I. Infrastructure Solutions can approach manufacturing economics, but only when factories are utilized and acquired facilities are integrated.
The current valuation rewards both past success and a substantial portion of future success. At 34 times trailing GAAP EPS and close to 40 times normalized owner earnings, the stock assumes that IES has graduated from cyclical contractor economics. The market may be misjudging how quickly margins can revert even when demand remains healthy. Contractors do not need a recession to experience lower profit; a less favorable project mix, wage inflation or one underestimated job can be enough.
For the next year, the critical variables are RPO conversion, organic Communications growth, Gulf Island margin and C&I project mix. Over three years, the question becomes whether added factories earn returns above the cost of capital after the current order wave. Over five years, the decisive issue is whether IES can convert its hybrid position into repeatable customer programs rather than a series of high-margin projects awarded during an exceptional buildout.
IES becomes a better investment under one of two conditions. The price can fall toward the low $300s without a collapse in RPO or margin, creating a genuine conservative margin of safety. Alternatively, owner earnings can rise toward $30 per share while the price remains stable, allowing fundamentals to catch up. - C&I’s 30.5% gross margin was helped by favorable, short-duration data-center projects and should not be treated as a permanent group margin.
- Roughly 87% of fiscal 2025 revenue came from fixed-price or unit-price contracts, exposing earnings to labor, materials and estimating errors.
- The stock trades near 40 times normalized owner earnings, above the valuation of the more diversified EMCOR and with no dividend yield to support a flat-earnings outcome.
- Gendell-affiliated holders sold approximately 180,600 shares during May and June while the share price was near record levels; the filings do not establish the motive.
Pre-mortem
The first loss script begins in fiscal 2027. Several hyperscalers slow new campus starts because interconnection dates and power-generation projects slip. IES’s headline backlog remains elevated, but RPO declines as letters of intent fail to become enforceable contracts. Communications growth falls below 10%, new factories operate below planned utilization, and consolidated operating margin falls from roughly 12%–14% toward 9%. Normalized EPS declines toward $16–$18, and the market reduces the multiple from nearly 40 times owner earnings to 20 times. The resulting share price falls toward $320–$360, a loss of more than 50%.
The second script does not require an AI slowdown. In 2027, IES continues growing revenue but experiences labor overruns and unfavorable revisions on two large fixed-price projects. C&I gross margin falls from 30.5% into the mid-teens, while Gulf Island remains a low-single-digit-margin operation. Owner EPS settles near $20. EMCOR and MYR continue reporting acceptable results, persuading investors that the problem is IES-specific execution rather than the industry. The multiple compresses to 22 times and the stock trades near $440, down more than 40%.
Final research conclusion
IES is a substantially better company than it was five years ago. It has built a credible position in the physical infrastructure required by data centers, improved bidding discipline, expanded fabrication capacity and maintained a debt-free balance sheet. The June-quarter growth was mostly organic, and the latest RPO supports further expansion. Its fundamental improvement is real.
The current price gives shareholders little protection against ordinary contractor outcomes. The valuation assumes that unusually high project margins will convert into durable owner earnings and that the enlarged backlog will become revenue at attractive profitability. A large part of the headline backlog is not yet enforceable RPO, customer concentration is opaque, and the June quarter included both investment gains and favorable project mix. The business merits continued coverage; the share price does not offer a balanced entry point.

Research uncertainties
The largest blind spot is backlog concentration. IES discloses neither the hyperscalers behind its awards nor project-level shares of backlog, so public information cannot determine the effect of a single campus cancellation.
Organic growth is not reported systematically by segment. Gulf Island’s disclosed contribution permits a reasonable Q3 calculation, but smaller acquisitions, facility transfers and cross-segment effects prevent a complete organic bridge.
Maintenance capital expenditure is not disclosed. The $45 million to $60 million estimate is based on depreciation and the historical spending base; a higher true requirement would reduce owner earnings.
