Exponent sells expert judgment. Its roughly 950 engineers and scientists, 731 of them holding doctorates, are hired to work out why a product failed, whether a design is safe, and whether that opinion will survive cross-examination or a regulator. Almost nothing sits on the balance sheet to support it: 2025 capital expenditure was $9.4 million against $536.8 million of revenue before reimbursements. That structure produces a 28.7% EBITDA margin on net revenue, more than double what FTI Consulting and Booz Allen earn on their own revenue bases.
Fiscal 2026 broke a two-year growth lull. Second-quarter net revenue rose 12.0%, with technical headcount up 5.6%, billable hours up 8.6% and utilization recovering from 72% to 74%. The report is careful about how much of that repeats. One unusually large user-research study accounted for about 4% of quarterly net revenue and is expected to shrink toward 2%, and management's own full-year guidance implies second-half growth of only 6.7% to 8.7%. The durable engine is hiring plus pricing, worth roughly 8% to 9% a year; utilization cannot keep adding two points annually.
A second caution sits in the share count. First-half buybacks of $146.1 million, far above the $25.7 million of free cash flow generated over the same period, cut cash from $221.9 million to $66.6 million. Earnings per share grew 15.4% in the second quarter while net income grew 10.7%, so roughly five points of that per-share gain came from a smaller denominator rather than more profit.
Price is where the report stops. At $67.10 the stock trades near 30 times trailing earnings, above CRA International at roughly 27 times, and CRA grew slightly faster at higher utilization. Normalized owner earnings yield about 3.5% to 3.6%, below the 4.6% to 4.7% available on 10-year Treasuries. The rating is Hold: the report reads this as a good company at a demanding price, finds no margin of safety at the current quote, and puts its ideal buy range at $42 to $47. The two risks that matter are people and the multiple. Consultants are portable, and a rerating from 29 times to 20 times would remove about 31% of the equity value with the business itself unchanged.

Research summary
Exponent looks superficially like an engineering company, but economically it is closer to a specialist law firm populated by engineers and scientists. It owns laboratories and a test center, yet the physical asset base is small relative to revenue: property, equipment and leasehold improvements were only $72.0 million at fiscal 2025 year-end, while 2025 revenues before reimbursements were $536.8 million and capital expenditure was $9.4 million. The scarce input is the consultant whose résumé is credible to a general counsel, regulator, jury, product-safety team or engineering executive. At January 2, 2026, Exponent employed 949 engineering and scientific staff, of whom 731 held doctorates. That means roughly 77% of its technical staff had doctoral degrees.
That distinction matters because the latest headline revenue number is unusually misleading. In Q2 2026 Exponent generated $148.860 million of revenues before reimbursements, against $132.868 million a year earlier, a 12.0% increase on the economic basis that management guides to. Reimbursements rose from $9.094 million to $22.752 million, so reported total revenue rose from $141.962 million to $171.612 million. The reimbursement increase of $13.658 million accounted for 46.1% of the $29.650 million increase in total reported revenue. Exponent records reimbursed travel, materials, certain subcontracts and similar third-party costs as revenue with an equivalent expense, so they contribute essentially no margin.
The jump was unusually large because user-research work carried substantial project costs. Exponent said Q2 growth included AI-enabled product user research and one large study that represented about 4% of net revenue; management commentary indicated that this study had become roughly twice as large as initially expected and should moderate as the year progresses. The filing itself attributes the reimbursement increase to user-research projects. The disclosed evidence therefore points toward a project-mix spike rather than a permanent change in Exponent's economics. Exponent does not disclose how much of the $13.658 million reimbursement increase came from that single study, so assigning the entire increase to it would go beyond the evidence.
The margin distortion shows why the distinction is essential. Q2 EBITDA was $42.728 million. That is 28.7% of revenues before reimbursements, up from 27.8% on the same basis a year earlier. Divide the same EBITDA by reported total revenue and the apparent margin falls to 24.9% from 26.1%. In other words, an investor looking at the wrong revenue denominator would conclude that profitability deteriorated when the underlying consultant economics actually improved by about 90 basis points. Throughout this report, “net revenue” means revenues before reimbursements, and all forward valuation is built on that basis.
The second distinction is between temporary utilization recovery and durable growth. Q2 average technical FTEs increased from 958 to 1,012, or 5.6%. Billable hours rose from 359,000 to 390,000, or 8.6%, while utilization increased from 72% to 74%. Net revenue per billable hour, a useful though imperfect proxy for realized billing rate and work mix, increased from about $370 to about $382, or 3.1%. The arithmetic says roughly three things happened simultaneously: Exponent hired more consultants, those consultants collectively billed more hours per head, and the realized revenue per hour rose.
Over the full year, however, management is not underwriting a large utilization step-up. Q1 utilization was 76%; Q2 was 74%; yet full-year guidance remains only 72.5%–73%, versus roughly 72.5% in 2025. Management now expects average technical FTE growth around 4.5%–5% for 2026 and realized-rate growth around 3.5%–4%. Those two durable components alone add to roughly 8%–9% before cross-effects. That almost fully explains the company's 9%–10% net-revenue guidance. The durable 2026 engine is hiring plus pricing; Q2's extra acceleration came from utilization and an unusually large user-research engagement.
This is an important ceiling. Exponent can have quarters with utilization in the mid-to-high 70s: Q1 2026 reached 76%, and Q2 2017 reached 77%. But annual utilization has generally lived in the low-to-mid 70s because consultants also recruit, sell work, write reports, train, testify on schedules they do not fully control, take vacation and sometimes sit between engagements. At 74% in Q2 2026, utilization has some cyclical room but not a second growth curve. Sustained revenue growth eventually has to come primarily from more high-quality consultants and higher rates.
That is why the 2026 guidance deceleration is meaningful without yet being alarming. Applying the 9%–10% full-year net-revenue guide to 2025's $536.760 million produces 2026 revenue of approximately $585.1–$590.4 million. H1 2026 already generated $300.677 million. The guide therefore implies H2 net revenue of roughly $284.4–$289.8 million against $266.455 million in H2 2025, equivalent to only about 6.7%–8.7% growth. Q3 itself is guided to 8%–10%. The step down from Q2's 12.0% is consistent with the large user-research study normalizing from roughly 4% of Q2 net revenue toward about 2%, together with a harder comparison and utilization settling closer to the full-year target. There is not yet enough evidence to call it a broad demand slowdown.
Margins carry a similar message. H1 EBITDA was $85.9 million, or 28.6% of net revenue, and Q2 alone reached 28.7%. Yet full-year guidance is only 27.8%–28.1%. At the midpoint, that implies an H2 EBITDA margin of roughly 27.3%. Hiring is part of the explanation: consultants arrive before their books of work are completely mature. Seasonal utilization also falls around holidays, while management expects higher G&A and infrastructure spending. The 2025 annual report additionally shows that occupancy expense already rose following the Arizona test-center lease extension, and annual rent on that land is scheduled to rise from about $1.0 million to $6.2 million beginning in January 2028. That future lease step-up is structural; the Q2-to-H2 margin normalization is mostly seasonal and mix-driven.
Demand itself is unusually resilient, although calling it countercyclical would go too far. Exponent's reactive work begins after something physically fails, catches fire, crashes, injures someone, enters litigation or attracts regulatory scrutiny. Proactive work includes product development, user research, safety engineering, regulatory assessment and risk mitigation. The company does not disclose the percentage split between reactive and proactive work, nor a quantitative industry-revenue mix. It says a significant portion of revenue comes from industries including chemicals, construction, consumer products, energy, life sciences and transportation, and its filings emphasize both event-driven and proactive engagements. It also lacks a meaningful backlog because many assignments arrive with little notice. No reliable public disclosure supports assigning, for example, “60% reactive” or “40% proactive”; those numbers should not be invented.
The recession evidence nevertheless supports partial defensiveness. The pandemic year was a genuine stress test: fiscal 2020 net revenue fell 3.3% as human-participant research, laboratory access and parts of the legal workload were disrupted. The decline was modest relative to many project-based engineering and staffing businesses, but it proves the model is not recession-proof. Earlier financial-crisis-era filings likewise show the firm remained profitable and avoided the collapse typical of highly leveraged or capital-spending-dependent engineering contractors. Event demand can offset weak discretionary consulting, while proactive client budgets still matter.
The moat is equally unusual. There is no network effect, patent estate or installed software base. Reputation is embodied in people. A client paying hundreds of dollars an hour for a forensic engineer cares whether the individual can defend a methodology under cross-examination, whether opposing counsel can attack conflicts of interest, whether the firm can bring in another expert from a neighboring specialty, and whether the brand has a record of surviving technical scrutiny. Exponent's 731 doctorates, 90-plus technical disciplines, roughly 950 consultants and long-tenured senior leadership provide evidence that this reputation has institutional depth rather than resting on one celebrity expert.
The vulnerability is just as concrete. The productive asset goes home every evening. A competitor can replicate a practice by recruiting the people who hold the client relationships. Exponent itself identifies attracting and retaining key employees as a material risk. Company-wide employee turnover, average consultant tenure and repeat-counsel/repeat-client percentages are not publicly disclosed, so a claim that retention is “best in class” cannot be substantiated. What can be observed is management tenure: CEO Catherine Corrigan joined Exponent in 1996; President John Pye joined in 1999; new CFO Eric Anderson joined in 2003; predecessor Richard Schlenker joined in 1990. That suggests an internal career system that works at the leadership level, while providing no direct measurement of rank-and-file turnover.
Capital allocation intensifies the quality debate. In H1 2026 Exponent repurchased $146.1 million of stock and paid $31.3 million of dividends. Operating cash flow was only $29.9 million and capex $4.2 million during the half, because receivables and the normal bonus cycle consumed cash. Cash consequently fell from $221.9 million at fiscal year-end to $66.6 million. The buyback was therefore funded primarily by accumulated balance-sheet cash, not by contemporaneous H1 free cash flow.
That does not make it irrational. Exponent's economic reinvestment occurs through hiring, compensation and training, which are expensed through the income statement rather than capitalized. A consultancy can grow while distributing most accounting free cash flow because adding a consultant requires little plant. Q2 repurchases averaged $59.88 per share, below both the August 14 close and my base-case estimate of fair value later in this report. I read the capital return as rational for a talent-constrained, asset-light business, rather than as evidence that growth has ended. The qualification is that the 2026 pace has materially reduced Exponent's cash cushion and future interest income.
The buyback also explains why EPS looks better than underlying profit. Q2 net income increased from $26.553 million to $29.395 million, or 10.7%, while diluted EPS moved from $0.52 to $0.60, or 15.4%. Diluted weighted-average shares fell from 51.502 million to 48.987 million, about 4.9%. On a no-buyback share count, per-share growth would have been close to net-income growth. Roughly four to five percentage points of the apparent EPS acceleration came from denominator arithmetic, not additional operating earnings.
The market is currently trading a three-part story: a rebound from 2024–25's slow growth, renewed high-single-digit-to-low-double-digit demand driven partly by AI-enabled physical products and infrastructure complexity, and unusually aggressive capital return. AI is real in the sense that management explicitly identified user research around AI-enabled consumer products and related failure-analysis work. It is not a separately reportable revenue stream. The only quantitatively isolated item is the large user-research study at roughly 4% of Q2 net revenue; Exponent has not disclosed an “AI revenue” line, AI backlog or AI contract value. I therefore assign AI no separate valuation premium beyond whatever growth already appears in consolidated revenue and rate assumptions.
The stock's history explains why that distinction matters. Exponent reached an adjusted closing high of $119.70 on December 8, 2021, when low interest rates and a long record of compounding supported a very high quality multiple. The August 14, 2026 close of $67.10 is about 44% below that peak. The business did not collapse; net revenue rose from $497.2 million in 2023 to $536.8 million in 2025. What collapsed was the willingness to pay an extreme multiple for mid-single-digit growth. The present trailing P/E is still about 30 times according to current market data. The stock has gone through a valuation reset, not a broken-business event.
The central bull/bear dispute follows directly. Bulls see a company whose rates continue to rise, technical hiring has restarted, Q2 net revenue grew 12%, utilization has recovered and the balance sheet has no conventional financial debt. Bears see a labor business in which 74% utilization has limited incremental room, one unusually large study inflated the best quarter, H2 guidance already points toward 6.7%–8.7% growth, and a roughly 30-times trailing P/E remains a rich price when the 10-year Treasury yield was around 4.6%–4.7% in mid-August.
The qualitative portrait label is high-quality compounding growth. “High-quality” comes from low capital intensity, positive long-run cash conversion, pricing power and a net-cash financial structure. “Compounding growth” is qualified: Exponent is unlikely to compound sustainably at Q2's pace without continuously adding scarce technical staff. Its credible long-run formula looks more like mid-single-digit consultant growth plus low-to-mid-single-digit rate growth, with utilization contributing around zero over a full cycle. That can be a very good business. The stock price still determines whether it is a very good investment.
Vertical history, financial machine, and moat
Exponent's origin explains why its culture still resembles an expert partnership. Failure Analysis Associates was founded in Palo Alto in 1967 by Stanford-linked engineers led by professor Alan Tetelman and colleagues Bernard Ross, Marsh Pound, John Shyne and Sathya Hanagud. The original problem was brutally specific: when an aircraft, structure or mechanical component failed, owners, insurers and lawyers needed engineers who could reconstruct the physical sequence and defend the explanation. The firm began as a partnership, incorporated in California in 1968, and ultimately became the foundation for the public company.
The founding model survives almost intact. The firm has broadened from fracture mechanics and accident reconstruction into human factors, electrical engineering, computer science, biomechanics, environmental health, chemical regulation, product development, risk assessment and dozens of adjacent disciplines. Yet the commercial transaction remains the sale of expert time and judgment. The fact that a 1960s failure-analysis practice can absorb wearables, autonomous-driving disputes, battery systems and AI-enabled product research without changing the revenue architecture is an important part of Exponent's durability.
The public-company birth came in 1990. The holding company had been organized as The Failure Group in 1989 and listed on Nasdaq under the ticker FAIL; the company says it changed its corporate name to Exponent and ticker to EXPO in 1998. Accessible primary investor materials confirm the listing year and ticker transition, but I could not verify the original offer price and gross IPO proceeds from a contemporaneous prospectus to a standard high enough to reproduce them here. I would rather leave those fields blank than turn a secondary database estimate into “fact.”
The change from “Failure” to “Exponent” was economically significant. The firm had discovered that the same skills used after a catastrophe could be sold before one: stress testing, product safety, regulatory submissions, user studies and design review. That moved the addressable market from the episodic aftermath of accidents toward the whole product life cycle. Failure analysis remained the reputational root; proactive consulting supplied an additional source of hours.
The corporate journey fits five useful stages rather than a year-by-year chronology.
From 1967 through the public listing, the company established forensic engineering as a commercial specialty. Its advantage came from university-level technical depth applied to disputes and accidents. The key lasting asset was not equipment but the expectation that technically difficult failures could be outsourced to an independent specialist.
From the 1990 listing through the 1998 renaming, the firm became a broader public professional-services organization. The “Exponent” identity explicitly loosened the commercial association with things having already gone wrong. That choice helped make proactive consulting compatible with the brand while preserving the credibility created by forensic work.
From the late 1990s through the financial crisis, Exponent widened its technical practices and client industries. It acquired and developed expertise beyond classic mechanical failure, added environmental and health capabilities and built a more geographically distributed consulting base. The financial crisis did not force a leveraged restructuring because the balance sheet and capital requirements were modest. The model's event-driven component helped prevent the kind of revenue collapse seen at firms whose demand depended entirely on construction starts or discretionary capital expenditure.
From 2009 through the late 2010s, the company developed the operating formula recognizable today: selective technical hiring, sustained billing-rate increases and utilization discipline. Paul Johnston became CEO in 2009 after joining the company in 1981; the long internal succession reinforced a partnership-like culture. A 2017 quarter provides a useful illustration of the model at full stretch: company utilization reached 77% as demand strengthened, producing considerable operating leverage without new factories or inventory.
From roughly 2019 through 2025, Exponent went from premium compounder to premium compounder with a growth problem. Fiscal 2019 net revenue still grew 10%. COVID then drove a 3.3% contraction in 2020. Demand recovered, but by 2024 and 2025 annual net-revenue growth had slowed to 4.3% and 3.5%, respectively. The market had capitalized Exponent as though durable high-single-digit growth were nearly automatic, so slowing growth plus much higher bond yields compressed the multiple even though absolute earnings remained healthy.
Fiscal 2026 is the current reacceleration stage. Headcount is growing again, utilization has recovered and rates are rising. User research around AI-enabled products provides a new source of projects, while old sources of demand such as utility risk management and disputes remain active. Simultaneously, management is accelerating buybacks and executing a generational leadership handoff: Catherine Corrigan remains CEO; John Pye became president and Eric Anderson CFO effective May 1, 2026; long-time CFO Richard Schlenker remained executive vice president; Karen Richardson became chair as former CEO Paul Johnston retired from the board. These are insiders with decades of firm experience, not an externally imposed turnaround team.
The financial record shows why Exponent screened well on conventional “quality” metrics, and also why those metrics need adjustment.

Net revenue rose only about 8% cumulatively between 2023 and 2025 while net income was essentially flat from 2024 to 2025. That was not a financial-quality collapse. In 2025, billable hours declined 2% from 1.495 million to 1.468 million and utilization remained 73%, yet net revenue increased 3.5%. Net revenue per billable hour rose from about $347 to about $366, a 5.4% proxy increase. Management similarly attributed 2025 revenue growth to higher billing rates partly offset by lower billable activity. Pricing carried the year.
Q2 2026 is almost the mirror image: rate still helped, but consultant volume returned.

That distinction answers the key growth question. Twelve-percent Q2 net-revenue growth was not simply pricing. Roughly 9% more billable hours did most of the work, and those hours came from about 6% more technical staff plus higher utilization. Pricing/mix added another roughly 3%. For the full year, management's 4.5%–5% FTE-growth and 3.5%–4% realized-rate assumptions imply that hiring and price should be the repeatable engines. Utilization cannot contribute another two percentage points every year without eventually running into practical capacity.
The business has operating leverage because compensation does not rise one-for-one with a short-term utilization increase. A consultant already on payroll who moves from nonbillable to billable time produces disproportionately high incremental margin. Conversely, a poorly timed hiring wave depresses margin because salaries begin before utilization matures. That is why Exponent's margin responds strongly to utilization despite very little plant utilization in the industrial sense. Q2's move from 72% to 74% utilization coincided with EBITDA margin rising from 27.8% to 28.7% of net revenue.
Compensation is the economic “cost of goods sold,” even though Exponent's GAAP income statement does not present the conventional manufacturer-style gross-profit line that a quality screen might expect. Comparing Exponent's gross margin with a software vendor or branded manufacturer therefore has little analytical value. The useful unit is the spread between consultant revenue and the fully loaded cost of consultants, offices and central support. Exponent explicitly reports compensation and related expense, other operating costs and G&A rather than a conventional product gross margin.
Its contracts make the labor linkage unusually transparent. Recent annual disclosures indicate that roughly four-fifths of revenue is generated under time-and-materials arrangements and roughly one-fifth under fixed-price structures. Fixed-price work adds productivity and execution risk, but even there the economic input remains staff time. Exponent has no material inventory, no manufacturing supply chain and no large depreciation burden.
Capital intensity is low rather than literally zero. The company owns buildings, laboratory equipment and a Phoenix test facility and leases laboratory and office space. Fiscal 2025 capex of $9.4 million was about 1.7% of net revenue; management expects $12–$14 million in 2026, about 2.0%–2.4% of guided net revenue. Depreciation and amortization was $10.1 million in 2025. A reasonable owner-earnings assumption is therefore approximately $8–$10 million of recurring maintenance capex, with the remaining $3–$5 million of current planned spending representing infrastructure expansion or timing. The company does not disclose maintenance and growth capex separately, so that split is an analytical estimate, not a management figure.
The cash record is stronger than any single half-year suggests. A reconstruction of the 2021–2025 audited cash-flow statements yields cumulative operating cash flow at roughly 1.2–1.3 times cumulative net income. In 2025 alone, OCF was $131.7 million against $106.0 million of net income, a 1.24-times ratio; 2024 was $144.5 million of OCF against $109.0 million of net income. H1 2026's $29.9 million OCF looks poor primarily because receivables rose sharply and annual bonuses are paid early in the year. Exponent itself flags the first-quarter bonus cycle as a recurring cash-use pattern.
The balance sheet contains essentially no conventional funded financial debt, but treating it as liability-free would also be wrong. Exponent had $82.8 million of operating-lease obligations at 2025 year-end and substantial deferred-compensation liabilities, largely matched by designated deferred-compensation plan assets. Cash of $221.9 million at fiscal year-end was genuine excess liquidity; the H1 2026 repurchase program spent much of it.
Return on equity needs to be decomposed before calling it a moat. Fiscal 2025 net income of $106.0 million against average 2024–25 stockholders' equity of about $405.7 million produces ROE around 26%. The accounting DuPont identity reflects an approximately 18.2% GAAP net margin on reported revenue, asset turnover around 0.75 times and an equity multiplier around 1.9 times. The multiplier does not come from bank-style debt leverage; it comes substantially from employee/deferred-compensation liabilities, operating leases and a deliberately shrunken equity account.
Treasury stock makes the distortion obvious. Stockholders' equity fell from $421.1 million at January 3, 2025 to $390.3 million at January 2, 2026 despite $106.0 million of earnings. Treasury stock at cost expanded to $645.6 million. By April 3, 2026, equity had fallen further to $338.3 million after another large repurchase tranche. A business that continually retires equity can report a rising ROE even if returns on new business remain unchanged.
A cash-adjusted invested-capital calculation produces an even more spectacular number because the operating capital denominator is tiny. At 2025 year-end, equity less cash was only about $168 million before adjusting for the nearly offsetting deferred-compensation assets and liabilities. The resulting return on “net invested capital” is very high, but its interpretation is limited: salaries used to recruit and develop experts are expensed immediately instead of appearing as a capital asset. Exponent's economic capital is human capital omitted from the balance sheet. High ROIC therefore confirms asset-light economics; it does not prove that an incremental dollar can be reinvested at the same accounting return indefinitely.
The strongest moat evidence is pricing. Fiscal 2025 net revenue per billable hour rose about 5.4% even as hours fell. Management's 2026 realized-rate guide of about 3.5%–4% shows that prices continue to rise on top of that base. A consultancy without reputational value eventually loses hours when it pushes price; Exponent has instead combined pricing with renewed FTE and billable-hour growth in 2026.
The second moat is credential density and multidisciplinary breadth. The 731 doctorates among 949 engineering/scientific employees are costly for a new competitor to reproduce quickly. More important, a large dispute may require mechanical engineering, human factors, toxicology, statistics and electrical engineering in the same engagement. A small boutique can hire an exceptional expert in one field; replicating more than 90 specialties under a conflict-checked independent brand is harder.
The third is accumulated credibility. Expert testimony is unusually sensitive to prior work, professional reputation and independence. Exponent's original failure-analysis practice dates to 1967. That history does not create a legal license to operate, but it lowers perceived client risk when the cost of a weak technical opinion can be an adverse verdict, failed regulatory submission or product recall.
The moat is institutional reputation wrapped around unusually credentialed people, not ownership of the people themselves. That makes it real but permeable. Exponent has some scale advantage because it can staff multidisciplinary problems internally; it remains much closer to an exceptionally well-run expert partnership than to a platform with winner-take-all economics.
Management governance is correspondingly important. Corrigan joined in 1996 and became CEO in 2018; Pye joined in 1999; Anderson in 2003; Schlenker in 1990. The 2026 succession therefore preserves institutional continuity. KPMG audited the 2025 financial statements and internal control, with no reported material weakness; Exponent reported no material legal proceedings in its latest annual filing. There is one common economic share class rather than a founder-controlled dual-class structure.
Capital allocation has been conservative in M&A and aggressive in distributions. That fits the economics. Acquiring another consultancy can destroy value if acquired experts leave, while internally recruiting technical specialists preserves culture. Repurchasing shares below a sensible intrinsic-value estimate is a cleaner use of surplus cash. The 2026 decision is defensible at the Q2 average repurchase price of $59.88. It would become less defensible if the board continued using balance-sheet cash to buy heavily at a return yield well below available bond yields.
Industry, cycle, and horizontal peers
Exponent sits at the overlap of engineering consulting, expert services, product-safety science and litigation support. There is no clean published TAM matching that overlap. Broad engineering and scientific-consulting markets are hundreds of billions of dollars globally, but such figures include architecture, construction design, IT implementation, contract laboratories and management consulting that Exponent does not meaningfully compete for. A narrow “forensic science-and-engineering consulting” TAM would be more intellectually honest but is not publicly measured with enough precision to use as an investment input. Exponent's own sub-$600 million annual net revenue and fragmented competitive environment indicate that penetration, rather than a finite industry TAM, is the relevant constraint.
The profit pool follows human scarcity. Senior experts with recognized credentials can charge premium rates; a consultancy that keeps their utilization high retains much of the spread between billings and compensation. Upstream bargaining power therefore belongs to employees. Downstream clients also have bargaining power on ordinary projects, but it weakens when a deadline, accident or litigation event makes specialist knowledge urgent. The industry's structural tension is clear: a firm needs scarce people to have a product, and those people know they are scarce.
Exponent's revenue risk differs from conventional engineering contractors in three ways. First, 78% or so of contract economics are time-and-materials, limiting large fixed-price project blowups. Second, there is little backlog, so visibility is low. Third, the absence of backlog is partly a feature of reactive demand: a product failure tomorrow cannot appear in today's order book. A low backlog therefore means short-cycle risk and option-like event demand at the same time.
Client concentration is low by normal consulting standards. Recent filings report no individual client exceeding 10% of revenue. Exponent does not disclose percentages for transportation, consumer products, energy, life sciences, chemicals or technology, so a quantitative industry-mix breakdown cannot be reconstructed from public disclosure. The same is true for engagement duration: management describes thousands of assignments, including roughly 10,000 projects a year, but does not publish an average contract length.
The lack of one large customer is important because event work is inherently lumpy at the project level. Q2 2026's large user-research study represented about 4% of net revenue, already large enough to change utilization and quarterly growth. Yet even that engagement remains too small to create conventional single-customer dependence at the company level.
Regulation is more opportunity than burden for the operating model, although tort reform can cut the other way. More complex chemical, product-safety, environmental, medical-device and technology rules create demand for technical assessments. Litigation and product-liability regimes create reactive demand. Exponent itself identifies tort reform and changes in government regulation as business risks because fewer disputes or different evidentiary standards could reduce expert work.
AI fits this pattern better as a complexity multiplier than as a technology product. When AI moves from a data center into a wearable, vehicle, medical device or consumer product, the questions become physical: Did the human understand the warning? Did the sensor fail? Was the system safe? What does the training data imply? Was the driver monitoring system adequate? Exponent can sell human-factors, electrical, biomechanics, statistical and failure-analysis expertise around those questions. It cannot monetize AI like a software vendor because there is no subscription or proprietary model revenue disclosed.
The best horizontal analysis therefore uses three different benches rather than pretending they are interchangeable.
The first bench is CRA International and FTI Consulting. These are the closest public economic analogues because the output is expert judgment and the productive input is billable professional labor. CRA is especially useful: Q2 2026 revenue increased 12.8% to $210.8 million, consultant utilization was 77% and quarter-end consultant headcount grew 3.3%. Clients include 88% of the Fortune 100 and 98% of the Am Law 100, which is evidence of its standing in economic, antitrust and litigation consulting.
FTI is a broader and much larger advisory franchise spanning corporate finance, restructuring, forensic and litigation consulting, economic consulting, technology and strategic communications. Q2 2026 revenue was $993.5 million, up 5.3%; adjusted EBITDA was $104.5 million, or 10.5% of revenue, down from 11.8%. Economic Consulting revenue actually fell 1.5%, while Technology grew 18.4%. FTI therefore carries more business-cycle and practice-mix diversification than Exponent but considerably lower consolidated margin.
The second bench is government and technical services. Booz Allen, Leidos, Parsons, AECOM and Jacobs sell skilled technical labor, but their economics contain larger contracts, government procurement, subcontractors and backlog. Booz Allen's fiscal Q1 2027 revenue fell about 4.2% while adjusted EBITDA margin rose to 11.9%; its full-year plan includes $220 million of capex, including $105 million for a headquarters. Those numbers show why equating a government contractor with Exponent misses both contract structure and capital intensity.
The third bench is testing, inspection and certification: SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, Eurofins and ALS. These companies monetize independent technical credibility, which makes them excellent moat analogues. Their laboratory networks, sample throughput, instrumentation, accreditation infrastructure and acquisition strategies make them poor direct valuation anchors for Exponent. Exponent's 2025 capex was less than 2% of net revenue and its main capacity unit is technical FTE. A TIC company's laboratory network is itself productive capital. Anchoring EXPO mechanically to TIC EV/EBITDA without adjusting for this difference would understate the value of Exponent's asset-light conversion.
Gartner and FactSet sit even farther away. They monetize knowledge, but subscription contracts, proprietary databases and software-like recurring revenue make their economics less labor-linear. Robert Half is a people business but primarily brokers labor rather than selling institutionally branded technical opinions. Those names are useful for understanding how markets value knowledge-worker economics, not for choosing EXPO's terminal multiple.
The final core public peer set in this report is therefore CRA International first, FTI Consulting second and Booz Allen as a cross-check. TIC firms serve as a capital-intensity and independence comparison. CRA is the cleanest valuation anchor; FTI tests the value of scale and diversification; TIC firms should not determine EXPO's multiple.

The table clarifies why a premium to ordinary consulting is defensible. Exponent's EBITDA margin on net revenue is more than double the adjusted EBITDA margins of FTI and Booz Allen. Its capital requirements are smaller, it carries no large funded-debt load and its technical brand has supported repeated rate increases. CRA's 27.3-times P/E, however, also shows that scarcity does not automatically justify any multiple: CRA was growing slightly faster in its latest quarter, operating at higher utilization and trading below EXPO.
Exponent's ecological niche is therefore “multidisciplinary technical expert of record.” It is too small to win by purchasing power and too specialized to be a broad consulting integrator. It takes profit from work that a general engineering firm, law firm, insurer or manufacturer either cannot credibly perform internally or would prefer to have independently validated. The most plausible threat is not a new laboratory network or AI model. It is a rival expert-services firm hiring a cohesive group of Exponent principals and taking the client relationships with them.
Technological substitution should on balance expand Exponent's work if physical systems become more complex. Generative AI can automate research, document review and routine analysis, reducing low-value professional hours. The work that remains economically valuable is the part where someone must select a methodology, conduct a physical test, interpret ambiguous evidence and sign an opinion that will survive regulatory or legal challenge. That is Exponent's stronger territory. The risk is that AI simultaneously raises expert productivity enough to reduce billable hours faster than new problems appear. There is no evidence of that effect in 2026: billable hours rose 8.6% in Q2.
Current fundamentals and valuation
Exponent entered 2026 after a soft-growth period rather than an earnings recession. Fiscal 2025 net revenue increased 3.5% to $536.8 million, billable hours declined 2%, utilization stayed at 73%, EBITDA margin declined from 28.4% to 27.6%, and net income fell 2.7% to $106.0 million. The margin decline reflected higher Arizona occupancy expense and a company-wide managers' meeting, among other costs.
Q4 2025 began to show better demand, particularly in proactive and reactive engagements, and Q1 2026 then accelerated materially. Q1 net revenue was $151.817 million against $137.437 million, an increase of about 10.5%; average technical FTEs were 1,013, up about 5%, utilization reached 76%, and management described strong user research in consumer electronics, utility risk-management work and reactive energy and life-sciences assignments.
Q2 confirmed that the acceleration was not a one-quarter accounting artifact. Net revenue increased 12.0%, Engineering and Other Scientific grew 13% and represented about 85% of net revenue, while Environmental and Health grew 9% and represented about 15%. Billable hours rose 8.6%, net income rose 10.7%, and EBITDA margin on net revenue expanded to 28.7%. The qualification is the large user-research study and associated pass-through costs discussed earlier.
Analyst reactions after Q2 captured the disagreement. JPMorgan raised its published target to $90, while UBS lowered its target to $72 and maintained Neutral. The spread is unusually wide for a relatively steady consulting firm and effectively represents two views of how much 2026's acceleration deserves to be capitalized.
Management's own guide is less exuberant than the Q2 print.

The second-half slowdown therefore exists in management's numbers. The most convincing explanation is normalization rather than an abrupt demand break. The large user study moves from about 4% of Q2 net revenue toward about 2% in later periods; full-year utilization is still expected at only 72.5%–73%; headcount continues to grow; realized rates remain positive. A true demand slowdown would show up as utilization falling despite slower hiring, a reduction in FTE-growth guidance or weaker pricing. None of those has yet been disclosed.
The reimbursement forensic also reinforces this conclusion. Q2 pass-through costs jumped $13.7 million year on year, but these costs are tied to the mechanics of user studies and similar third-party work rather than a new low-margin business segment. Because equivalent reimbursable expense is recognized, the move has almost no dollar effect on profit. It only makes GAAP total revenue and total-revenue margin percentages noisier.
AI should be treated the same way. Management has identified AI-enabled consumer-product user research, advanced-driver-assistance disputes and infrastructure complexity as areas of demand. Exponent has not disclosed contracted AI backlog or separable AI revenue. The approximately 4%-of-net-revenue large study is the only material project quantity investors can isolate, and even that is described as a user-research engagement rather than a separately contracted “AI segment.” The valuation below gives no explicit AI premium.
Share repurchases are the other major current fundamental. In H1 2026 the company paid $146.1 million for stock, versus $72.7 million for the whole first nine months of 2025, and the board added another $50 million authorization in July. Q2's weighted diluted share count was down 4.9% year over year. At a steady net-income growth rate, that reduction creates roughly five percentage points of additional per-share growth.
The balance-sheet cost is visible. Cash fell by $155.3 million in six months, while reported H1 free cash flow before financing was only about $25.7 million. Buying back $146.1 million while paying $31.3 million of dividends therefore drew roughly $150 million of accumulated liquidity after allowing for operating cash generation. The company remains financially sound, but its former excess-cash position has been largely monetized.
For owner earnings, the five-year cash record says GAAP income is usable. Cumulative OCF has exceeded cumulative net income, while recurring capex is small. Normalized owner earnings sit slightly above accounting earnings rather than below them: 2025 operating cash flow of $131.7 million less roughly $9 million of maintenance capex is about $123 million, against $106.0 million of net income. Accounting earnings understate the economics here rather than overstating them, so P/E remains usable. The more conservative approach is to use both earnings and free cash flow.
Trailing reported free cash flow needs normalization. Fiscal 2025 OCF less capex was about $122.3 million. Replacing H1 2025 with H1 2026 reduces trailing FCF to roughly $109 million because receivables absorbed cash in early 2026. Against approximately $3.19 billion of equity value, that is only a 3.4% reported trailing FCF yield. A normalized 2026 owner-earnings estimate around $113–$116 million, based on guided earnings economics and roughly $8–$10 million of maintenance capex, produces a yield around 3.5%–3.6%, or roughly 28 times owner earnings.
The headline market valuation tells a similar story. At $67.10, market data put EXPO around 30.2 times trailing EPS. On a 2026 earnings estimate derived from guidance, lower interest income and roughly a 28.5% tax rate, I estimate full-year EPS around $2.30–$2.35, putting the stock near 28.5–29 times current-year earnings.
That is much cheaper than the 2021 valuation regime but not an objectively low multiple. The stock's record close was $119.70 in December 2021; the present price is approximately 44% lower even though 2025 net revenue was above 2023. The reset reflects slower growth and a far higher discount rate. An exact ten-year P/E percentile cannot be reconstructed from primary filings alone, but the current multiple is roughly in the lower third of the premium regime the stock occupied after the late 2010s, while remaining above the valuation of the closest listed expert-services peers.
The bond comparison is demanding. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was about 4.6%–4.7% around August 14, with FRED showing 4.63% for August 13 and market data around 4.68% on August 14. EXPO's normalized owner-earnings yield is only about 3.6%. The equity can still outperform because earnings and per-share value grow; the current price leaves little protection if that growth disappears.
The scenario analysis below uses 2027 owner earnings because current 2026 guidance is already largely observable. The multiple is applied to owner-earnings-per-share estimates after maintenance capex rather than blindly to EBITDA.

This is valuation-scenario analysis within a research framework, not investment advice.
The conservative case holds 22–24 times rather than a typical industrial-services multiple because even under slow growth Exponent would retain net cash, low capital intensity, high cash conversion and a specialized brand. The base case stops at 27–29 times, well under what the stock has historically commanded, for three reasons: the risk-free rate is near 4.7%, CRA currently trades near 27 times earnings, and Exponent's own guide already embeds second-half deceleration.
The optimistic 32–34-times multiple requires evidence that Q2 is the beginning of a durable new growth regime rather than a project spike. That means consultant hiring around 5%, rate growth of at least 4%, utilization around 73%–75%, and repeatable AI/product-complexity work after the present large study ends. Without that evidence, 34 times is narrative pricing.
Peer valuation reinforces the same answer. EXPO at about 30 times trailing EPS is more expensive than CRA at roughly 27 times and FTI at roughly 23 times. The premium can be defended by Exponent's far higher consolidated margin, asset-light structure and balance sheet. It cannot be defended by faster disclosed Q2 growth relative to CRA, because CRA's 12.8% exceeded Exponent's 12.0% net-revenue growth and CRA's utilization reached 77%.
The expectation gap is therefore narrow. At $67.10, the market is no longer pricing perfect double-digit compounding. It is still pricing a successful return to durable high-single-digit growth. The next earnings print matters less for reported total revenue than for four operating variables: technical-FTE growth, utilization, realized rate and whether the unusually large user study normalizes without taking core demand with it.
The margin-of-safety recheck is harsher than the base valuation.
Current price is above the conservative $53–$60 fair-value range, so the discount to conservative value is negative. Margin of safety against the conservative scenario is zero.
The most fragile base-case assumption is the valuation multiple. A 28-times midpoint multiple reflects continued recognition of Exponent as an elite consultancy. Cutting that assumption to 70% gives about 19.6 times. Applied to approximately $2.65 of base owner earnings per share, fair value falls to about $52. That sensitivity is far larger than a modest change in next year's growth rate.
If earnings are flat for the next three years and the shareholder receives only the economic yield generated by a roughly $114 million owner-earnings stream, the annual return before any rerating is around 3.5%–3.6%. That is below the approximately 4.6%–4.7% 10-year U.S. government-bond yield at the research date. There is no margin of safety at this buy price.
This is a good-company/bad-enough-price rather than a bad-company case. The current quote is much less demanding than 2021, and it sits in my base hold range, but it does not compensate an investor for a permanent return to 3%–5% revenue growth or a normal professional-services multiple.
Margin-of-safety sufficiency verdict: none.
Risks, catalysts, tracking, and cross-synthesis
The first permanent-loss risk is talent economics. Probability is medium and impact high. Exponent's central asset is its consultant base, and the company explicitly identifies recruitment and retention as a material risk. The observable indicators are FTE growth, utilization, stock-based compensation, rate realization and any unusual executive/principal departures. The loss path is direct: departures remove productive capacity and relationships, replacement hiring lifts compensation before generating equivalent revenue, utilization falls, margin compresses and the market stops valuing EXPO as a premium knowledge franchise.
This risk is easy to underestimate because 2026 currently looks healthy. Average technical FTEs grew about 5.6% in Q2 and management expects 4.5%–5% for the year. The warning signal would be the opposite combination: slowing FTE growth together with accelerating pay and sustained utilization above 75%. That would mean demand exists but Exponent cannot add capacity without bidding aggressively for talent.
The second risk is a utilization/mix reversal. Probability is medium and impact medium-to-high. Q2 utilization of 74% is already healthy; Q1 was 76%. The large user study supported billable hours and temporarily lifted the best quarter. If utilization falls toward 68%–70% after that study ends while hiring continues, EBITDA margin could fall several hundred basis points because salaries are difficult to remove instantly from a professional partnership. The first indicator is utilization, followed by billable hours per FTE.
The third is valuation compression. Probability is medium-to-high and impact high because the stock still trades near 30 times trailing earnings while the risk-free yield is around 4.7%. A move from approximately 29 times forward earnings to 20 times, with earnings unchanged, would erase about 31% of equity value without any deterioration in the operating company. If slower growth accompanied the rerating, losses could approach 50%.
The fourth is regulatory and litigation demand moving against the company. Probability is low-to-medium and impact medium. More complicated product and environmental rules generally create work, but tort reform, fewer product-liability disputes or changes in expert-evidence standards could reduce reactive consulting. Exponent explicitly identifies tort reform and regulation as demand variables. The observable evidence would appear in weaker dispute-related growth even while proactive product consulting remains healthy.
The fifth is capital-allocation overreach. Probability is low-to-medium, impact medium. H1 2026 repurchases exceeded contemporaneous FCF by roughly $120 million and drove cash down to $66.6 million. The company can afford the current program, but repeated balance-sheet-funded repurchases at 30-plus times owner earnings would exchange highly liquid capital for an asset yielding less than Treasury bonds before growth. The observable indicator is repurchase price relative to owner-earnings yield and the remaining cash balance.
Financial distress is not a central risk. Exponent has no material conventional funded debt, little capex, modest lease obligations relative to profitability and no disclosed material litigation proceeding. FX exposure exists through overseas operations but has historically been immaterial at group level.
Positive catalysts are equally concrete. A Q3 result at the upper end of the 8%–10% net-revenue guide with utilization still around 74%–75% would show that Q2's large study did not conceal weaker core demand. Technical FTE growth staying near 5% while rates reach 4% would validate the durable growth decomposition. Engineering and Other Scientific continuing to grow at double digits after the 4%-of-net-revenue project winds down would be stronger evidence that AI-enabled products, utilities and disputes have become a portfolio of work rather than one engagement.
A second positive catalyst would be continued repurchases around the low $60s or below. At those prices, the board would be retiring stock nearer my base valuation's lower bound and below the current market quote. Buybacks become much more powerful when funded by annual FCF rather than another major draw on cash.
The most important negative catalyst is a guidance cut. If 2026 net-revenue guidance fell below 8% after Q3, the market would have to reconsider whether the Q1/Q2 acceleration was project timing. A utilization drop below 71% alongside 4%–5% headcount growth would be particularly damaging because it would show that capacity has outrun demand. A realized-rate increase below 3% would separately challenge the pricing-moat thesis.
The tracking dashboard should therefore remain compact.

The operating dashboard should be read as one system. Headcount by itself is neither good nor bad. Five-percent hiring with stable utilization means the firm is successfully adding productive capacity. Five-percent hiring with utilization at 68% means the company has put salaries ahead of work. Seventy-five-percent utilization with no hiring can look excellent for one quarter and bad for long-term growth if employees are overloaded. Rate increases are most attractive when they coexist with stable hours: that combination shows actual pricing power.
The reimbursement ratio is a useful secondary check because Q2 2026 shows how quickly project mix can obscure the accounts. A repeated reimbursement ratio above 15% of net revenue would warrant asking whether user studies requiring extensive outside costs have become structurally larger. Even then, valuation should stay on revenues before reimbursements because the economic margin on pass-through costs remains nil.
The next earnings report should also settle part of the AI debate. The useful question is whether user-research work outside the unusually large study continues growing. A generic statement that “AI demand remains strong” adds little. Billable hours, FTE growth, utilization and net revenue after the study normalizes are the evidence.
Looking across almost six decades, the capability Exponent has genuinely proven is institutionalizing expert credibility. Many professional-services firms grow around a founder or handful of star partners and become vulnerable when those people retire. Exponent survived the death and departure of early leaders, public listing, multiple CEO transitions, recessions, the evolution from mechanical failure analysis to human factors and software-intensive physical systems, and a substantial 2026 leadership handoff. The productive asset is still people, but the brand has outlived many generations of people.
Its success was not simply an era tailwind. The original market existed because modern machines fail and disputes need technical evidence. As technology became more complicated, Exponent expanded the number of scientific disciplines it could bring to those disputes. Proactive consulting then used the same expertise before failures occurred. The company's history therefore contains a recurring mechanism: technological complexity creates a new class of technical questions; Exponent hires people capable of answering them; successful work enlarges the firm's reputational stock; higher reputation supports rates and the ability to attract further experts.
Management has executed that mechanism with unusually little financial leverage. Net revenue was $497.2 million in 2023 and $536.8 million in 2025 despite weak billable hours; 2026 hiring has restarted while cash distributions have been substantial. This is operational compounding rather than financial engineering, although buybacks are now materially enhancing per-share numbers.
The part that is easy to romanticize is “scale.” Exponent has roughly 950 consultants, which is enough to combine disciplines in a way a twenty-person boutique cannot. Yet FTI is far larger and CRA has strong relationships with major law firms and corporations. Exponent does not have the kind of scale economics that make the largest competitor inevitably win. Its advantage is density of relevant expertise around certain technical problems, reinforced by brand and conflict-screened independence.
The horizontal comparison makes Exponent's premium profitability genuine. FTI's Q2 adjusted EBITDA margin was 10.5%; Booz Allen's latest was about 11.9%; Exponent produced 28.7% on net revenue. Some of that difference is accounting and business mix, but not all of it. Exponent monetizes scarce experts at high rates without financing large subcontractor bases or laboratory networks.
CRA complicates the bull story more constructively. CRA grew 12.8% in its latest quarter, had 77% utilization and trades at roughly 27 times trailing earnings. Exponent grew 12.0% on its relevant net-revenue basis, had 74% utilization and trades around 30 times. Exponent's higher margin and balance sheet deserve some premium; CRA shows that a premium above the high 20s needs more than “good consulting company” as justification.
The current valuation is therefore rewarding both proven history and some future success. At the 2021 peak, the stock effectively prepaid years of successful compounding. At $67.10, much of that excess has been removed. Yet a roughly 3.6% normalized owner-earnings yield below the Treasury yield means the stock still needs growth to justify itself. An investor is being paid in future earnings growth, not in current cash yield.
What the market may be misjudging is the composition of 2026 growth. A simplistic bear view treats the entire Q2 acceleration as a one-off AI project. The 5.6% FTE increase and 3%–4% rate realization argue that core growth has genuinely improved. A simplistic bull view annualizes 12% Q2 growth. Management's own full-year numbers reject that: H2 is implied at about 6.7%–8.7%. The most likely middle path is a real reacceleration to high-single-digit underlying growth, temporarily embellished by the large study.
For the next year, the decisive variable is utilization after that study normalizes. A 73%–75% range while technical FTEs grow around 5% would confirm healthy demand. A fall below 70% would show over-hiring or project air pockets.
For the next three years, the decisive variable is hiring at acceptable unit economics. Exponent needs enough doctoral and senior technical talent to expand billable capacity without pushing compensation up faster than billing rates. The moat can persist while margins are flat; it weakens if rates stop outrunning compensation.
For five years, the decisive variable is whether the firm's reputation remains institutional rather than personal. The 2026 leadership succession is important for exactly that reason. If Pye and Anderson preserve Exponent's recruiting culture, multidisciplinary collaboration and pricing discipline after Johnston and Schlenker's generation steps back, the business can plausibly continue compounding.
The bull reasons reduce to four specific facts:
- Q2 net revenue grew 12.0%, with technical FTEs up 5.6%, billable hours up 8.6% and a roughly 3% net-revenue-per-hour tailwind; underlying growth therefore extended beyond one reimbursement-heavy project.
- Approximately 77% of engineering/scientific staff held doctorates at fiscal 2025 year-end, providing unusually dense credentials for a multidisciplinary expert-services firm.
- Fiscal 2025 capex was only $9.4 million against $536.8 million of net revenue, allowing most normalized cash earnings to be distributable.
- Q2 repurchases averaged $59.88 per share and reduced diluted share count materially; at sensible prices, buybacks convert excess cash into genuine per-share accretion.
The bear reasons are equally concrete:
- Full-year guidance implies only about 6.7%–8.7% H2 net-revenue growth after Q2's 12.0%, so investors cannot extrapolate the quarter.
- The large user-research study represented about 4% of Q2 net revenue and is expected to normalize, making some of Q2's utilization and growth non-repeatable.
- At $67.10, EXPO trades around 30 times trailing earnings and only about a 3.5%–3.6% normalized owner-earnings yield while the 10-year Treasury yields about 4.6%–4.7%.
- H1 repurchases of $146.1 million materially exceeded H1 free cash flow and reduced cash from $221.9 million to $66.6 million, so future buyback capacity increasingly depends on current cash generation.
- The productive asset is portable labor; company-wide consultant turnover and repeat-client statistics are not disclosed, leaving a meaningful blind spot around the durability of client relationships.
The first pre-mortem is a talent-and-utilization failure. Imagine that by 2028 the present AI/user-research burst has faded, technical headcount has continued growing 4%–5%, but utilization falls to 67%–69% for several quarters. Compensation inflation stays near 5% because Exponent must retain scarce engineers, while rate increases fall below 3%. EBITDA margin drops from roughly 28% toward 24%–25%. Earnings per share falls toward $2.00 even after buybacks. The market then stops treating EXPO as a special compounder and assigns 18–20 times earnings. A $36–$40 share price would represent roughly a 40%–46% loss from today's price.
The second pre-mortem is more subtle: the business remains good but the multiple breaks. Suppose 2027–2029 net revenue grows 5%–6%, margins remain around 27%, and EPS reaches only $2.60–$2.70 because lower cash balances reduce interest income and compensation absorbs pricing. CRA, FTI and other consultants settle into low-20s multiples while long rates stay high. EXPO rerates from about 29 times current-year earnings to 20 times despite no operational crisis. At $2.65 EPS, that means roughly $53 a share, before any deeper recession. The investor loses because the entry multiple prepaid growth that never became exceptional.
Those scenarios frame the final judgment. Exponent is one of the cleaner people businesses in the public market: no conventional financial leverage, little maintenance capital, credible pricing power, unusually dense technical credentials and a demand base partly generated by things clients cannot schedule. The company also appears to have exited its 2024–25 growth lull. The 2026 evidence is broader than one AI-related study because headcount, hours and rates are all contributing.
The price has improved far more than the company's quality has deteriorated since the 2021 peak. Yet $67.10 still requires the company to keep compounding. The current owner-earnings yield does not provide a cash-yield margin of safety, the stock remains more expensive than CRA and FTI, and management's own guidance says the Q2 growth rate will decelerate. I therefore see a company worth owning at the right price without seeing enough downside protection to initiate aggressively here.

The primary operating source is Exponent's fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, which provides the audited 2023–2025 income statements, cash flows, employee disclosures, billable-hour and utilization data, capital expenditures, leases and risk factors. The latest operating source is the Q2 2026 Form 10-Q filed August 7, together with the Q2 earnings release and July 30 earnings call. Two dates are easy to conflate: the earnings release itself was issued July 30, 2026, while August 7 was the 10-Q filing date. Governance and succession are grounded in the 2026 proxy and Exponent's April 6 leadership announcement.
Peer evidence comes primarily from CRA International's Q2 2026 investor materials, FTI Consulting's Q2 release and Booz Allen's fiscal Q1 2027 materials. Five research blind spots remain material.
- Exponent does not publish a quantitative reactive-versus-proactive revenue split. Any precise percentage would be invented.
- It does not disclose revenue percentages by major end-market vertical, repeat-client share, repeat-counsel share, average engagement duration or a company-wide backlog from which those measures could be reconstructed.
- Company-wide consultant turnover and average tenure are not disclosed. Long executive tenure is evidence about culture at the top, not a substitute for employee retention statistics.
- Maintenance versus growth capex is not separately disclosed; the $8–$10 million maintenance estimate used for owner earnings is based on recurring capex, depreciation and the physical footprint.
- Contemporary primary documentation sufficient to verify the 1990 IPO offer price and gross proceeds was not recovered in this research pass, and the Q3 2026 earnings date remains unconfirmed by Exponent; the October 29 date in the dashboard is an external estimate.
