Crane Company makes two kinds of engineered equipment. One half sells sensors, power components, landing systems and electronics that get designed into aircraft, missiles and satellites. The other half sells valves, pumps, piping and measurement instruments to chemical, pharmaceutical, water and nuclear plants. It became a standalone company in April 2023, when the old Crane Holdings split off its payment business. The rating in this report is Hold.
The aerospace half is genuinely compounding. Core sales grew 13.3% in the second quarter of 2026, the adjusted margin reached 25.8%, and backlog rose to 1.268 billion USD with orders running ahead of shipments. That growth is spread across commercial and military, new equipment and spare parts, rather than concentrated in one product. Since the separation, group operating margin has climbed from 13.4% to 18.4% and free cash flow has nearly tripled to 341 million USD.
The headline growth number tells a different story from the underlying one. Reported sales rose 25.6% in the quarter, but 19.8 of those points came from businesses Crane bought, 5.2 points from the existing operations and 0.6 points from currency. Roughly four-fifths of the growth was purchased. The process-flow half actually shrank, with core sales down 1.4% after a 0.6% decline the quarter before, which management blames on a trough in chemical spending.
The purchases are the open question. In January 2026 Crane paid 1.355 billion USD for four sensing and measurement businesses with about 430 million USD of combined sales, three of them bought from Baker Hughes. Those three cost 1.179 billion USD and produced roughly 60 million USD of profit before interest, tax and depreciation, so the initial earnings yield on what Crane paid for them was around 5%. Crane has not disclosed a profit figure for the fourth business. Management wants to lift that profit toward 150 million USD within five years and says it is running about 18 months ahead of schedule. Six months of good execution is encouraging, but it is not a full cycle.
At 223.07 USD the shares trade at about 32 times this year's adjusted earnings and roughly 39 times reported earnings, with a free cash flow yield near 3%, below the 4.63% available on a ten-year Treasury. The report puts fair value at 234 USD in its base case and 177 USD in its conservative case, and sets an ideal buying range of 130 to 142 USD. Its position is that an existing holder can reasonably stay, while a new buyer is paying today for acquisition returns that will take years to prove.

Research summary
Crane Company is best understood as two industrial franchises sharing one operating system and one capital-allocation office. Aerospace & Advanced Technologies sells engineered components that become designed into aircraft, defense systems, satellites, missiles and other long-lived platforms. Process Flow Technologies sells valves, pumps, piping, measurement and sensing equipment into chemical, pharmaceutical, water, nuclear, cryogenic and general industrial processes. The two franchises run on different economics. Aerospace depends on program positions, qualification, aircraft production, flight utilization and defense procurement. Process Flow depends more heavily on industrial capital expenditure, maintenance, plant utilization and project timing. That is why Crane’s reported group growth conceals two sharply different operating pictures.
Entity-boundary conclusion: the valid historical basis begins with the businesses that became today’s Crane Company, not the consolidated revenue previously reported by the old Crane Holdings. On April 3, 2023, Crane Holdings distributed the Aerospace & Electronics, Process Flow Technologies and Engineered Materials businesses into a separate Crane Company. The remaining payment and merchandising operations became Crane NXT, ticker CXT. Crane Company is treated as the accounting successor, while the payment business is classified as discontinued operations in its recast history. Engineered Materials was then sold effective January 1, 2025 and is also presented as discontinued operations in the latest annual accounts. The comparable annual series used here is the 2023–2025 continuing-operations series in the 2025 Form 10-K, which excludes both the payment business and Engineered Materials. It is never spliced to old consolidated Crane revenue.
That distinction produces a clean picture of the focused company. From 2023 through 2025, continuing revenue rose from 1.862 billion USD to 2.305 billion USD, an 11.3% compound rate. Gross margin expanded from 40.3% to 42.2%, operating margin from 13.4% to 18.4%, and continuing net income from 175.9 million USD to 331.7 million USD. Free cash flow after all capital expenditure increased from 123.1 million USD to 341.3 million USD. Part of that progress came from volume recovery, price and productivity, part from bolt-on acquisitions, and part from removing costs associated with separation. The progression nevertheless shows that the focused portfolio generated substantially more profit from each dollar of revenue after the separation.
Today’s market narrative goes beyond that proven improvement. Investors are trading Crane as an emerging industrial compounder: a smaller company with an aerospace franchise approaching the quality of Curtiss-Wright and HEICO, a flow-control franchise managed more like IDEX, and a Crane Business System capable of raising acquired margins. That narrative has evidence behind it. The total-shareholder-return index in Crane’s 2025 Form 10-K rose from 100 at the April 2023 separation to 251.14 at December 2025, compared with 172.42 for the S&P 500 and 175.10 for the selected capital-goods index. The market rewarded faster earnings growth, margin expansion, portfolio focus and increasingly aggressive capital deployment.
Crane’s latest quarter strengthened the operating case while sharpening the valuation dispute. Second-quarter 2026 sales rose 25.6% to 724.7 million USD, operating profit rose 40.2% to 144.3 million USD, and adjusted operating margin reached 21.3%. Aerospace & Advanced Technologies produced 13.3% core sales growth, while its backlog reached 1.268 billion USD. Process Flow Technologies reported 20.9% sales growth and 22.2% adjusted operating margin, but core sales declined 1.4%. The company raised adjusted EPS guidance to 6.85–7.05 USD.
The central fact: 19.8 percentage points of the quarter’s 25.6% sales growth came from acquisitions, 5.2 points from core growth and 0.6 points from currency. Acquisitions supplied 77% of reported growth. Full-year guidance presents a similar relationship: mid-20% reported growth versus 5–6% core growth. Describing Crane simply as a mid-20% grower would materially overstate the underlying business’s current pace. The existing operations are growing at a respectable mid-single-digit rate, with aerospace far above that average and process flow slightly negative.
Those two descriptions hinge on the four businesses acquired at the start of 2026. Druck, Panametrics and Reuter-Stokes were purchased from Baker Hughes. The announced headline consideration was 1.150 billion USD, which Crane described as 1.060 billion USD after recognizing approximately 90 million USD of expected tax benefits; the price actually recorded at closing was 1.179 billion USD net of 40.6 million USD of acquired cash and subject to post-closing adjustments. Those businesses had generated about 390 million USD of 2025 sales and approximately 60 million USD of adjusted EBITDA. On the accounting purchase price, Crane paid about 3.0 times sales and 19.7 times EBITDA; on the tax-benefit-adjusted headline price, the figures were about 2.7 times sales and 17.7 times EBITDA.
Optek-Danulat was also acquired effective January 1, 2026, contrary to any reading that it closed materially later. Crane paid 176.2 million USD net of acquired cash for a business with about 40 million USD of 2025 sales, or approximately 4.4 times revenue. It was acquired from JD Group GmbH and shareholder Jürgen Danulat. Crane has not publicly disclosed an official standalone EBITDA figure for Optek. Brand-level revenue for the Baker Hughes businesses is available: the audited combined statements filed with the acquisition report show 2024 revenue of 147 million USD at Panametrics, 147 million USD at Druck and 88 million USD at Reuter-Stokes, against 382 million USD for the three together. Profit is disclosed only in combination, so public investors can test the group economics but cannot reconstruct a complete pre-acquisition profit-and-loss account for each of the four brands.
Management says integration is ahead of plan. The evidence is encouraging but incomplete. The acquisitions are now expected to add about 0.20 USD to 2026 EPS, compared with an earlier estimate of 0.15 USD. Management also says the acquired sensor businesses are running ahead of the original 4–6% growth assumption and will achieve more than 300 basis points, possibly at least 350 basis points, of first-year margin improvement. The longer-term plan for the three Baker Hughes businesses was to raise EBITDA from roughly 58–60 million USD to close to 150 million USD by year five; management now believes that timetable is ahead by about a year and a half.
Crane still carries a substantial burden of proof. Raising the roughly 58–60 million USD of EBITDA to 150 million USD requires a five-year compound increase of about 20–21%. At the 1.179 billion USD accounting purchase price, the acquired businesses initially produced an EBITDA yield of only about 5.1%; the year-five target would raise that to 12.7%. The deal can become a strong use of capital, but only after a large increase in profit. Six months of favorable execution do not establish through-cycle returns, especially because the acquired businesses have not yet faced a recession, an aerospace production interruption or a fresh chemical-capex contraction under Crane ownership.
Aerospace currently provides the strongest fundamental evidence. In 2025, the segment generated 1.049 billion USD of sales and a 25.0% operating margin, up from 20.1% in 2023. Commercial markets represented 61% of sales and military markets 39%; original equipment represented 66% and aftermarket 34%. Commercial OEM, military OEM, commercial aftermarket and military aftermarket all grew in 2025. In the second quarter of 2026, core sales accelerated to 13.3%, management described demand as broad across commercial and defense categories, and core backlog rose 11% year over year.
The record aerospace backlog appears to reflect real orders rather than a loose collection of memoranda. Crane defines backlog through remaining contractual performance obligations; at December 2025, 81% of the company’s 1.435 billion USD backlog was expected to convert to revenue in 2026 and another 15% in 2027. At June 2026, group backlog reached 1.887 billion USD, including 331 million USD from the recent acquisitions. An approximate second-quarter book-to-bill calculation using beginning backlog, ending backlog and sales gives 1.23 for Aerospace & Advanced Technologies and 1.03 for Process Flow Technologies. Currency and order adjustments can move that calculation. The direction still supports management’s statement that both platforms had sequential backlog growth.
The aerospace profit pool is not identical to the TransDigm or HEICO model. Crane disclosed that aftermarket was 34% of 2025 aerospace revenue, but it does not disclose aftermarket profit. Management says the margin gap between Crane’s original-equipment and aftermarket products is narrower than at many aerospace peers because its OE positions already earn good margins. Commercial aftermarket ran at 62.6 million USD in the second quarter of 2026, 9.4% above the prior year, with management expecting mid- to upper-mid-single-digit longer-term growth. This structure gives Crane less extreme aftermarket upside, but it also reduces the adverse mix effect when aircraft production rises faster than spare-parts demand.
Process Flow Technologies presents the live bear case. Its 2025 sales rose 4.8% to 1.256 billion USD, but core growth was only 1.5%, and process-valve core sales declined slightly. In 2026, core sales fell 0.6% in the first quarter and 1.4% in the second. Management attributes the weakness mainly to a chemical-market trough, rather than broad share loss or destocking, and says orders improved sequentially as chemical volumes began to recover in the Americas. That explanation is only partly supported by the backlog. PFT backlog rose from 606.2 million USD in March to 619.6 million USD in June, but both figures include acquired backlog, of 222.2 million USD and 230.9 million USD respectively. Excluding it, core backlog rose 1.2% sequentially to 388.7 million USD and stood 3.6% below the 403.1 million USD of a year earlier. Sequential stabilisation is visible; a year-over-year recovery is not. Independent market-share data are not disclosed either, so share stability cannot be proven from the filing alone.
At 223.07 USD, Crane trades at about 32.1 times the midpoint of 2026 adjusted EPS guidance and roughly 39 times trailing GAAP earnings. Assuming 90–100% conversion of adjusted net income into free cash flow, the prospective free-cash-flow yield is only about 2.8–3.1%. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yielded approximately 4.63% on August 5, 2026. Crane needs sustained earnings growth and continued multiple support merely to overcome the opportunity cost of a materially higher risk-free yield.
Peers give a mixed signal. Crane’s trailing P/E is above IDEX and Dover but below Curtiss-Wright and HEICO. That placement says the market assigns Crane some aerospace-compounder quality while retaining a discount for process-flow cyclicality, shorter standalone history and an acquisition strategy that has not yet produced a full-cycle return. Compare Crane only with HEICO and it looks inexpensive; compare it only with Dover and it looks expensive. The correct reading lies between those poles.
Qualitative portrait: company in transition. The focused 2023–2025 business has already proven margin expansion, cash generation and strong aerospace execution. The 2026 company is materially different because approximately 1.36 billion USD of newly acquired assets, bought at demanding initial multiples, must now become high-return Crane businesses. The quality of the original portfolio is established more clearly than the quality of the enlarged capital base.
Vertical history and financial architecture
Crane’s economic heritage starts with Richard Teller Crane, who established the business in Chicago in 1855 to manufacture industrial products for a rapidly expanding American economy. The current company still cites that founding and R.T. Crane’s commitment to honest dealing as part of its operating culture. The early enterprise was built around metal products, valves, fittings and the infrastructure needed by factories, railroads and buildings. That origin matters because today’s Process Flow franchise still solves the same broad problem: safely controlling fluids, pressure and process conditions where failure is costly.
The modern aerospace business came through decades of portfolio development rather than from the original valve operation. Crane accumulated sensing, power conversion, fluid management, landing-system and microwave capabilities that could be designed into aircraft and defense platforms. The result was a diversified conglomerate with attractive industrial franchises but an increasingly difficult capital-market identity. Payment technology, aerospace components, process valves and fiberglass panels did not share the same end markets, valuation references or reinvestment opportunities.
Separation in 2023 was the decisive turn. The transaction was a pro rata distribution, not an initial public offering: holders of Crane Holdings received one share of the new Crane Company for each old share, and regular-way trading under CR began on April 4, 2023. No conventional IPO price, primary capital raise or new-issue valuation exists. Crane NXT retained Payment & Merchandising Technologies, while the distributed Crane Company initially contained Aerospace & Electronics, Process Flow Technologies and Engineered Materials.
That legal listing path creates two distinct histories. The heritage business dates to 1855, but the investable focused entity has traded independently only since April 2023. Historical vendor databases that attach old Crane’s pre-separation sales, earnings or valuation directly to CR can produce false growth rates and false valuation percentiles. The latest Form 10-K resolves the accounting treatment: Crane Company is the accounting successor, and the payment operations distributed to Crane NXT are shown as discontinued operations.
The first post-separation stage was portfolio cleanup and operating improvement. Crane acquired BAUM, a German lined-piping specialist, in October 2023 for 93.5 million USD. During 2024 it acquired Vian, CryoWorks and Technifab, adding aerospace pumps, cryogenic systems and precision-fabrication capabilities; aggregate acquisition cash payments were 200.5 million USD, including 38.8 million USD for Technifab. These were recognizable bolt-ons to existing niches rather than transformational changes in scale.
Crane exited Engineered Materials at the same time. The segment, which manufactured fiberglass-reinforced plastic panels, was sold effective January 1, 2025. The announced enterprise value was 227 million USD, while Crane reported approximately 208 million USD of cash-free, debt-free proceeds after closing adjustments. Engineered Materials had produced 200.0 million USD of 2024 sales and 224.3 million USD in 2023, but it no longer belongs in the valuation or operating forecasts for CR.
That divestiture completed the transformation from a three-segment spin-off into the present two-platform company. Aerospace & Electronics was renamed Aerospace & Advanced Technologies after the Druck acquisition, reflecting a broader set of sensing and advanced-technology capabilities rather than a change in the underlying historical series. The current organization has about 8,300 employees.
The next stage began in 2025, when Crane committed more than 1.3 billion USD to acquire four sensing and instrumentation businesses. The company arranged a 900 million USD delayed-draw term facility and a 900 million USD revolving facility, both maturing in September 2030. It drew 900 million USD from the term facility and 250 million USD from the revolver in December 2025, placing much of the cash in escrow before the January closings. This timing explains the unusual December 2025 balance sheet: 1.223 billion USD of restricted cash sat beside 1.148 billion USD of debt.
The deals changed Crane’s financial architecture. At June 30, 2026, cash was 350.4 million USD and gross debt was 1.098 billion USD, after 100 million USD of repayment during the quarter; another 90 million USD was repaid after quarter-end. Management reported net debt to EBITDA of about 1.2 times, below its stated target range of 2–3 times. That target is not a promise to remain conservatively levered. Management explicitly says mergers and acquisitions are the first capital-allocation priority and that debt repayment mainly rebuilds capacity for further deals.
The succession from Max Mitchell to Alex Alcala occurred alongside this expansion. Alcala became chief executive on April 27, 2026, while Mitchell moved to executive chairman. The transition preserved continuity: Alcala was an internal executive closely involved in the operating system and portfolio strategy. The arrangement can support execution, though it also concentrates the board’s strategic influence around the architect of the acquisition model.

Revenue grew at an 11.3% compound rate, but profit grew much faster because price, productivity and operating leverage raised gross and operating margins. The 2023 result also contained 39.3 million USD of separation-related transaction expense, which depressed the initial operating base. The margin increase is partly operational and partly the removal of transition costs.
Cash conversion improved as working capital normalized. Across the comparable three-year period, operating cash flow equaled 1.05 times continuing net income in aggregate. Free cash flow after all capital expenditure equaled 88% of net income. Crane is a low-capital-intensity manufacturer: 2025 capital expenditure was 2.3% of revenue and close to depreciation and amortization of 50.2 million USD. The business can therefore turn a high proportion of incremental operating profit into cash when receivables and inventory are controlled.
The balance sheet before the 2026 acquisitions was strong, but the purchase price substantially increased goodwill, intangible assets and financial leverage. Provisional purchase accounting and the timing of the closings obscure any precise current return on invested capital. A reasonable June 2026 approximation, using annualized adjusted operating profit after tax divided by equity plus debt less cash, produces an all-in ROIC in roughly the mid-teens. That remains healthy, but is below the return implied by Crane’s pre-deal operating margins and low tangible capital needs. The direction is clear: buying the new businesses initially diluted all-in capital returns even while increasing EPS.
Stock-based compensation was 27.2 million USD in 2025, about 8% of continuing net income. Outstanding shares increased from 57.29 million to 57.61 million during the year, showing modest rather than severe dilution. The 2023 equity plan still had more than seven million shares authorized for future issuance, so compensation should remain part of owner-earnings analysis.
Dividend payments were 52.9 million USD in 2025, and the current quarterly dividend is 0.255 USD per share, or 1.02 USD annualized. At the current price, the yield is about 0.46%. The dividend is affordable but immaterial to the investment case. Crane did not repurchase shares in 2025, and management’s July 2026 comments put further acquisitions ahead of both debt reduction and repurchases.
Accounting quality is broadly sound, but one area deserves monitoring. Deloitte issued an unqualified opinion and concluded that internal control was effective at December 2025. It identified over-time revenue recognition as a critical audit matter because management estimates costs and final margins on certain government-related contracts; 109.1 million USD of 2025 revenue was recognized over time on contracts still in progress. The issue is estimation sensitivity rather than evidence of misstatement, but aerospace program cost changes can move reported profit before final delivery.
The post-separation share-price history has three main phases. First, the market recognized that the distributed company contained the more attractive aerospace and flow assets without payment-technology complexity. Second, earnings and margins rose faster than expected through 2024 and 2025, leading investors to assign a compounder multiple. Third, the 2025 acquisition announcement and 2026 closing shifted attention from portfolio cleanup to acquisition execution. The stock’s 151% total-return-index gain through December 2025 came from both earnings growth and multiple expansion.
The July 2026 reaction shows how demanding expectations have become. Despite record second-quarter results and a guidance increase, the shares fell sharply in the session following the release before recovering to 223.07 USD by August 5. The market appears to have focused on the modest size of the EPS-guidance increase, negative PFT core growth and the extent to which headline sales depended on acquisitions. A company can beat historical results and still disappoint a valuation that already assumes successful integration.
A defensible historical valuation percentile cannot be produced. The independent company has only a little more than three years of trading history, while pre-April-2023 multiples refer to a different consolidated portfolio. The current 32.1 times forward adjusted P/E and approximately 39 times trailing GAAP P/E are plainly toward the demanding end of the focused company’s short history, but assigning a fabricated “ten-year percentile” would violate the entity boundary.
Business model, moat, industry and horizontal position
Aerospace & Advanced Technologies generated 1.049 billion USD of 2025 sales and 262.5 million USD of operating profit. Process Flow Technologies generated 1.256 billion USD of sales and 263.5 million USD of operating profit. PFT was the larger business by revenue and narrowly larger by absolute profit. Aerospace had the higher margin, faster growth and stronger backlog. After the 2026 acquisitions, the revenue balance remains close, while the growth and valuation weight increasingly lean toward aerospace.
Aerospace earns money from five broad capability groups: power conversion and management, sensing, fluid and thermal management, landing systems, and microwave or electronic components. These products are generally low in cost relative to the value of the aircraft or defense system but critical to safety, reliability or mission performance. Customers care more about qualification, reliability, weight, power density and delivery performance than about the lowest unit price.
The 2025 aerospace sales mix provides the clearest public exposure map.

The mix is more balanced than the market label “aerospace aftermarket” suggests. Two-thirds of sales come from original equipment. Aftermarket is still valuable because installed platforms create recurring repair and replacement demand, but Crane’s economics depend materially on aircraft production, defense procurement and successful new-program positions.
Specific program disclosure is incomplete. Management has said Crane has about 35 million USD of current content across more than ten missile programs, with customer forecasts and requests for quotation suggesting potential demand four to five times that level by the end of the decade. It also says Crane participates in every current U.S. Air Force demonstrator, collaborative combat aircraft opportunities, private-jet electrification and radar programs. These comments support a defense-growth runway, but the company does not publish revenue by named airframe, engine or missile platform. Investors cannot independently calculate the effect of a specific Boeing, Airbus, Gulfstream, F-35 or missile-production change from public disclosure.
Process Flow Technologies makes valves, lined pipe, pumps, instrumentation and measurement products. In 2025, process valves produced 947.6 million USD of sales, commercial valves 147.4 million USD and pumps and systems 161.1 million USD. The profit pool comes from applications where corrosion, contamination, extreme temperatures, pressure or regulatory requirements make product failure expensive. The acquired Panametrics, Reuter-Stokes and Optek businesses add ultrasonic flow measurement, nuclear sensing and optical process measurement.
PFT is not one cycle. Chemical valves are exposed to plant utilization and project spending. Pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical applications are steadier and place a premium on clean, precise measurement. Water and wastewater depend on municipal budgets and replacement cycles. Cryogenic products serve liquefied gases and other specialized infrastructure. Nuclear components have long qualification and plant-life cycles, but demand can be lumpy around outages, license extensions and new construction.
Crane’s cost structure contains a meaningful fixed component: engineering, qualified manufacturing capacity, sales coverage, certification, plant overhead and corporate infrastructure. Material, direct labor and freight are more variable. This produces attractive incremental margins when revenue rises. Management’s long-term frameworks call for approximately 35–40% incremental margins in aerospace and 30–35% in PFT; second-quarter incremental margins fell below both, at roughly 27% in PFT and 26% in aerospace, because acquired revenue arrives at lower initial margins. PFT still expanded margin by about 160 basis points excluding that dilution, despite weak core volume.
Capital requirements are modest, but engineering cannot be cut without damaging future positions. Management credits continued engineering investment during the pandemic and other weak periods for current program wins. That decision shows how the economic cost of aerospace research differs from accounting capital expenditure: much of the investment passes through current operating expense even though the benefit can last through a multi-decade platform.
Moat verdict: Crane has real but uneven moats. Aerospace qualification, designed-in positions and long platform lives form the strongest moat. Process-flow switching costs, installed-base knowledge and application expertise are meaningful but more exposed to project cycles and capable specialist competitors. The Crane Business System may raise acquired margins, but it is an execution capability, not a substitute for product differentiation.
The first moat is qualification and customer risk. Replacing a flight-critical power component, brake-control system or nuclear sensor requires testing, certification and customer engineering resources. Once Crane is designed into a platform, the customer has limited incentive to switch for a small purchase-price saving. The long life of aircraft and defense programs can then create decades of original-equipment and aftermarket revenue.
The second is specialized intellectual property and application knowledge. Crane competes in niches that are too small for many large companies to prioritize but demanding enough to deter generic manufacturers. Druck pressure sensors, Panametrics flow measurement, Reuter-Stokes nuclear detectors and Optek optical analyzers strengthen that position. The acquired technologies also create cross-selling and product-development possibilities across Crane’s existing customer base.
The third is installed base and responsiveness. A process plant or aircraft operator often needs replacement parts, technical advice and rapid problem resolution more than the lowest quoted price. Crane’s brands, distribution and application engineers make it difficult for an entrant to win the installed base quickly. This moat is strongest in safety-critical or regulated applications and weaker in more standardized commercial valves.
The fourth advantage is disciplined decentralization. Crane’s operating system focuses on productivity, pricing, working capital, new-product development and recurring management cadence. The financial evidence is the rise in operating margin from 13.4% in 2023 to 18.4% in 2025 and continued PFT margin expansion during a period of declining core sales. The limitation is that operational improvement eventually reaches a ceiling. Continued compound growth then requires organic innovation or more acquisitions.
Industry structure supports incumbents. Aerospace qualification and defense procurement create long entry cycles; process instrumentation requires application expertise and service support. Customers often dual-source where safety permits, keeping supplier bargaining power below monopoly levels. Original-equipment manufacturers can exert price pressure because of their scale, while aftermarket and proprietary replacement demand shift bargaining power toward suppliers.
Cycles differ by platform. Commercial aerospace is in a multiyear production and utilization cycle, with supply-chain constraints limiting output more than demand in several categories. Defense and missile demand benefit from geopolitical rearmament, but budget timing and program decisions remain political. PFT is exposed to chemical and general-industrial capital expenditure, with pharmaceutical, water and nuclear activity providing partial defense. Management’s current description places chemical markets near a trough, while aerospace remains in expansion.
Regulation is both barrier and risk. Aviation certification, defense procurement rules and nuclear qualification protect installed positions but increase development costs and delay new-product revenue. Government-related long-term contracts introduce cost-estimation risk. Tariffs and trade policy affect materials and freight: second-quarter adjusted results excluded 18.7 million USD of tariff refunds recognized in cost of sales plus 0.8 million USD of related interest income, while management also cited higher freight inflation related to Middle East disruption.
The most useful horizontal comparison divides Crane into two peer groups rather than forcing a single conglomerate set.

Curtiss-Wright became a defense-and-aerospace engineered-components company with unusually valuable naval nuclear, actuation and defense-electronics positions. Customers choose it for qualification, installed content and exposure to long-duration government programs. Its growth is currently slower than Crane aerospace’s. Backlog, defense visibility and a record of cash conversion still justify a higher multiple. Crane has more process cyclicality and less concentrated defense visibility; it also has faster near-term aerospace core growth.
HEICO became the premium listed model for decentralized aerospace acquisition and aftermarket compounding. Its parts, repair and electronic businesses combine high organic growth with a long record of buying niche companies without destroying their entrepreneurial culture. HEICO’s latest organic growth above 18% and earnings growth substantially ahead of sales support a valuation that Crane has not yet earned. Crane’s broader OE and process exposure makes it less pure, although its lower multiple leaves room to re-rate if the acquired businesses deliver.
IDEX is the closest philosophical comparator for PFT. It owns decentralized, high-margin fluidics, measurement and specialty-product businesses, and investors value its capital-allocation discipline more than its end-market growth. Its latest organic decline shows that even high-quality niche portfolios remain exposed to customer inventory and industrial demand. Crane’s PFT margin has caught up impressively, but its acquisition wave is larger relative to its starting size.
Dover offers the lower-multiple diversified-industrial reference. Its portfolio spans pumps, clean energy, climate, imaging and engineered products, and its latest 5% organic growth compares favorably with Crane’s PFT decline. Dover receives a lower multiple because its businesses are broader, more cyclical and less consistently perceived as aerospace-quality. Crane’s premium to Dover is justified by aerospace growth and margin, but the full gap assumes PFT returns to growth and integration remains on plan.
Parker-Hannifin and AMETEK provide broader quality benchmarks. Parker has greater scale and a deeply integrated motion-and-control portfolio, while AMETEK has a longer record of buying differentiated instrumentation assets and raising margins. Crane resembles a smaller combination of those models, but its independent evidence base is shorter and its recent deployment rate is more concentrated.
Crane’s ecological niche is a focused niche-technology consolidator. It is too small to dominate global aerospace or process equipment, but large enough to fund engineering, serve global customers and acquire subscale specialists. Its profit pool comes from products whose cost is small relative to the cost of failure. Its main long-term threat is losing new-program positions, underinvesting in technology, or paying such high acquisition multiples that good operating businesses produce mediocre shareholder returns. A commodity price war is not the danger here.
Current fundamentals and acquisition audit
The last four reporting periods show a consistent sequence: strong aerospace growth, continued margin expansion, rising acquisition intensity and sluggish process-flow core demand. Late-2025 results established the high earnings base and funded the January transactions. First-quarter 2026 sales rose approximately 25%, with 9.4% AAT core growth and a 0.6% PFT core decline. Second-quarter reported growth accelerated slightly, AAT core growth reached 13.3%, and PFT core sales declined 1.4%. Management raised guidance after both first- and second-quarter results.
The latest operating cross-section is more useful than the consolidated headline.

Aerospace’s 13.3% core growth is the strongest evidence that Crane is more than an acquisition story. Management described growth as broad across commercial OE, commercial aftermarket, military OE and military aftermarket rather than concentrated in one category. The approximate 1.23 book-to-bill and 11% core backlog growth suggest that near-term sales are not merely pulling orders forward from later quarters.
The drivers are identifiable. Higher aircraft build rates support commercial OE, and high aircraft utilization supports aftermarket. Missile and defense-electronics demand supports military programs. Continued engineering investment has helped Crane win positions on demonstrators, collaborative combat aircraft, business jets and radar systems. Price contributes to nominal growth, but management’s references to volume, content wins and backlog show that the quarter was not primarily an inflationary price effect.
PFT’s decline appears cyclical rather than clearly structural. Management says chemical demand has been passing through a trough and expects positive volume growth in the second half of 2026. Sequential backlog improvement supports that view. Chemical products also carry above-average PFT margins, so a volume recovery would benefit profit more than an equal amount of lower-margin sales. The evidence does not establish a robust upturn yet: full-year core guidance remains only flat to low single digits, and two consecutive quarters were negative.
Group margin came in better than the sales mix would normally imply. Recent acquisitions diluted AAT margin by roughly 100 basis points and PFT margin by about 80 basis points in the quarter. Excluding that dilution, management estimated PFT margin expansion at approximately 160 basis points. Productivity, pricing net of cost inflation and disciplined overhead outweighed lower core volume.
The GAAP-to-adjusted bridge deserves careful treatment.

The 0.16 USD adjustment is not a simple one-time add-back. Transaction expenses should decline after integration, and tariff refunds are genuinely unusual. Acquisition-intangible amortization is non-cash, but it will persist for years and will recur whenever a serial acquirer replenishes its portfolio. Ignoring amortization while also ignoring the cash purchase price would overstate economic earnings. This report uses free cash flow alongside adjusted EPS, and it counts goodwill and intangible capital when assessing acquisition returns.

Baker Hughes was the seller of Druck, Panametrics and Reuter-Stokes. Druck was assigned to Aerospace & Advanced Technologies; Panametrics and Reuter-Stokes went into PFT. Optek, purchased from JD Group GmbH and Jürgen Danulat, also entered PFT. The assignments are industrially coherent: Druck adds aerospace pressure sensing, while Panametrics, Reuter-Stokes and Optek add flow, nuclear and optical measurement to the process platform.
Crane has disclosed brand-level revenue for the three Baker Hughes businesses but not their separate EBITDA, capital expenditure or working capital. That prevents an independent determination of which brand carries the high margin and where the claimed synergies are actually appearing, although the revenue split already shows Reuter-Stokes contracting: 51 million USD in the first nine months of 2025 annualises about 23% below its 88 million USD 2024 total. The audited statements also show pre-deal profitability slipping, with income before tax of 34 million USD on 382 million USD of 2024 revenue, an 8.9% margin, against 19 million USD on 275 million USD in the first nine months of 2025, a 6.9% margin. Optek’s official sales are disclosed, but its official EBITDA is not. The disclosure is sufficient for purchase accounting and consolidated guidance, but thin for evaluating four individual acquisitions.
The quantitative evidence that integration is ahead of plan comes in three pieces.
First, second-quarter acquisition revenue was approximately 114.5 million USD, calculated from the disclosed acquisition-growth percentages and prior-year segment revenue. Annualized mechanically, that equals about 458 million USD, roughly 6.5% above the businesses’ combined 2025 sales of approximately 430 million USD. Seasonality, currency and purchase-accounting differences make this an indicator rather than a clean same-store growth rate.
Second, management raised estimated 2026 EPS contribution from the transactions to about 0.20 USD from 0.15 USD. At roughly 59 million diluted shares, the new estimate represents about 11.8 million USD of first-year adjusted net income. That is less than 1% of the 1.355 billion USD accounting purchase price, showing how modest initial after-financing accretion is relative to the capital deployed. The investment case depends on later margin expansion, not on the first-year earnings pickup.
Third, management now expects the PSI businesses to exceed the original 4–6% growth assumption and improve margin by more than 300 basis points, perhaps 350 basis points or more, in 2026. It also says the path from roughly 58 million USD to nearly 150 million USD of EBITDA is about 18 months ahead of schedule. These are measurable future claims. Evidence of 2026 margin improvement is emerging, but the 150 million USD endpoint remains a management forecast.
Acquisition verdict: the early operating evidence supports “ahead of plan,” but public disclosure does not yet prove high returns on capital. The transactions were purchased at high initial multiples, and most of the value must come from profit growth that has not yet been realized.
Crane’s balance sheet can absorb the deals. Quarter-end net debt was approximately 748 million USD before the post-quarter repayment, and reported leverage was about 1.2 times EBITDA. The facilities mature in 2030, with no major 2026 principal maturity. Liquidity risk is low under normal operations. Capital-allocation risk is higher because management wants to move leverage back toward 2–3 times for more acquisitions.
The 2026 revenue guide of roughly 2.87–2.90 billion USD and adjusted EPS guide of 6.85–7.05 USD imply a larger business but a less dramatic EPS increase than the sales headline. Purchase amortization, interest expense, corporate cost and initial acquisition-margin dilution absorb part of the acquired revenue. Management expects adjusted segment operating margin of at least 23%, free-cash-flow conversion of 90–100%, and approximately 59 million diluted shares.
The share-price narrative is trading three linked expectations: aerospace core growth stays above its 7–9% long-term framework; PFT exits its chemical trough; and acquired margins rise rapidly enough to turn a high purchase multiple into a double-digit return. The first expectation has strong current evidence. The second has order evidence but not yet positive sales. The third has six months of execution evidence and several years of forecast risk.
Valuation, risks, catalysts and tracking
Crane’s current equity value is approximately 13.1 billion USD. Adding quarter-end net debt of roughly 748 million USD gives an enterprise value close to 13.8 billion USD. Against the midpoint of 2026 guidance, the shares trade at 32.1 times adjusted EPS. Annualizing second-quarter adjusted EBITDA produces an approximate EV/EBITDA multiple of 21 times, though seasonality and continuing integration make that annualization imprecise.
The cash-flow pass-through supports using adjusted earnings, but only with acquisition capital kept visible. Across 2023–2025, aggregate operating cash flow was 1.05 times continuing net income. After all capital expenditure, aggregate free cash flow was 0.88 times net income. Working-capital outflows depressed 2023 and 2024 conversion, while 2025 conversion exceeded one.
Crane does not disclose maintenance and growth capital expenditure separately. Total 2025 capital expenditure of 53.5 million USD was close to depreciation and amortization of 50.2 million USD. A reasonable working assumption is that 70–80% of ordinary capex maintains existing capacity, with the remainder supporting capacity, new programs and productivity. Because this split is an estimate, the conservative owner-earnings measure uses all capital expenditure rather than a smaller maintenance amount.
On that basis, 2025 owner earnings were approximately 341 million USD. For 2026, management’s 90–100% free-cash-flow conversion framework applied to approximately 410 million USD of adjusted net income implies 369–410 million USD of free cash flow. That puts the current equity FCF yield at about 2.8–3.1%, equivalent to 32–36 times owner earnings. The gap from the 32.1 times adjusted P/E is well below 30%, so neither accounting EPS nor cash flow produces a cheap result.
A simple expectation check reaches the same conclusion. With a long-run required return of 8% and perpetual growth of 4%, a steady-state perpetuity supporting the current market capitalization would require annual owner earnings of roughly 524 million USD. That is 28% above the top of the 2026 free-cash-flow range. The gap is achievable over several years, but the current price already requires a meaningful part of the integration and organic-growth plan to succeed.
Peer comparison does not rescue the valuation. HEICO and Curtiss-Wright trade at higher trailing multiples because their aerospace and defense exposure is purer and their compounding records are longer. IDEX and Dover trade lower because current organic growth is weaker or their portfolios are more cyclical. Crane’s blended multiple is logically positioned, but “below HEICO” is not evidence of absolute undervaluation.

The conservative case assumes that aerospace remains healthy but decelerates, PFT recovers only weakly, and investors reduce the multiple toward the upper end of ordinary high-quality industrial valuations. The base case assumes the long-term segment growth frameworks stay credible and the acquired businesses contribute steady margin improvement. The optimistic case requires both continued double-digit aerospace momentum and clear proof that the acquired sensor businesses can become some of Crane’s highest-margin assets.
Today the market prices a result close to the base case. It does not price the full 150 million USD PSI EBITDA target, but it gives Crane little allowance for a prolonged integration pause. The next expectation gap will come from acquisition margins, PFT core orders and 2027 guidance rather than another quarter of acquired revenue growth.
Valuation conclusion: Crane is fairly priced for successful execution and expensive for ordinary industrial execution. The price offers participation in a favorable aerospace cycle and a credible operating system, but little compensation for the possibility that expensive acquisitions produce only average returns.
A margin-of-safety review is harsher. Current price stands approximately 26% above the conservative value of 177 USD. The most fragile base-case assumption is the acquired profit ramp. Reducing the expected incremental contribution to 70% lowers estimated owner earnings from 7.80 USD to roughly 7.40 USD per share and fair value to about 222 USD at the unchanged 30-times multiple. If weaker execution also reduces the justified multiple to 28 times, value falls to approximately 207 USD.
If earnings remain flat for three years and the multiple does not change, the investor receives only the approximately 0.46% dividend yield. That is far below the 4.63% U.S. 10-year Treasury yield as of August 5. Any multiple compression would make the return negative. Margin-of-safety verdict: none.
The most important permanent-loss risks are specific.
Acquisition-return risk has medium-to-high probability and high impact. The observable indicators are acquired sales growth, disclosed margin dilution, EPS contribution and progress toward the 150 million USD EBITDA target. If the businesses stall near their approximately 60 million USD pre-deal EBITDA, Crane will have paid almost 20 times EBITDA for assets earning a low single-digit after-tax return. The initial share-price narrative would shift from “integration engine” to “overpayment,” reducing both earnings and the multiple.
PFT cyclicality has medium probability and medium-to-high impact. Two consecutive quarters of negative core growth are already visible. A failure to turn positive in the second half would undermine management’s chemical-trough explanation. Because chemical products have above-average margins, persistent weakness would reduce operating leverage and challenge the 23% adjusted segment-margin objective.
Aerospace execution risk has medium probability and high impact. Record backlog is valuable only if customers maintain schedules and Crane can supply. Aircraft-production delays, supplier shortages, defense-program timing or cancellations could slow conversion. AAT now carries the largest share of the company’s organic-growth credibility; a drop below 5% core growth would have a disproportionate effect on valuation.
Capital-allocation escalation has medium probability and high impact. Management’s stated 2–3 times leverage target and M&A-first priority mean the current balance-sheet repair may be temporary. Another large deal before investors can assess the 2026 acquisitions would increase goodwill, integration complexity and refinancing exposure.
Valuation compression has high probability of occurring at some point and high impact if paired with an earnings miss. The forward earnings yield is about 3.1%, below the risk-free yield. A move from 32 times to 24 times on unchanged 2026 adjusted EPS would reduce the share price to roughly 167 USD. Such a decline would require no recession or accounting problem, only a reassessment of the appropriate multiple.
Non-GAAP normalization has medium probability and medium impact. Acquisition amortization is non-cash, but serial acquisition spending is economically recurring. Investors who value only adjusted EPS may understate the capital required to maintain the acquisition-growth model. Rising transaction expenses, larger intangible balances or weaker cash conversion would make that gap more important.
Positive catalysts include AAT core backlog remaining above 10% growth, PFT producing positive volume growth in the third quarter, acquired margins improving by at least the promised 300 basis points, and 2027 guidance showing high-single-digit EPS growth without another large deal. A material commercial or defense program win would extend the duration of the aerospace thesis.
Negative catalysts include PFT remaining organically negative, a reduction in aerospace production schedules, a lower acquisition EPS contribution, another acquisition at a high-teens EBITDA multiple, free-cash-flow conversion below 90%, or an increase in net leverage without corresponding owner-earnings growth.

This dashboard should be read as a connected system. A PFT sales recovery matters more if book-to-bill stays above one and margins benefit. Acquisition EPS matters more if free cash flow converts and leverage falls. Aerospace growth deserves a premium only while backlog and program wins show that the growth can persist.
Cross-synthesis, sources and final research conclusion
Vertically, Crane has proven three capabilities. It can reshape a complicated industrial portfolio, raise margins after focus, and preserve investment in specialized engineering through weak periods. The separation removed a conglomerate structure whose businesses belonged to different investor universes. The sale of Engineered Materials sharpened the focus again. From 2023 through 2025, revenue rose 24% cumulatively while operating profit rose 69%, and free cash flow nearly tripled. Those results came from more than a favorable cycle. Portfolio decisions, price discipline, productivity and lower transition costs all contributed.
The favorable cycle still matters. Commercial aerospace production and utilization were recovering, defense demand strengthened, and the company entered the focused era with a large backlog. PFT benefited less because chemical activity was subdued. Crane’s success was therefore a combination of management execution and an unusually strong aerospace environment. Separating those effects is important because the current valuation pays for both to continue.
The proven operating capability remains present. AAT core growth of 13.3%, a 25.8% adjusted margin and a 1.268 billion USD backlog show that the aerospace franchise continues to win. PFT’s ability to expand margin while core sales decline demonstrates cost and price control. Cash generation has been adequate to reduce debt after the acquisitions.
The unproven capability is deploying capital at the new scale. Earlier bolt-ons were small relative to the company. The January 2026 purchases were nearly seven times Crane’s 2024 acquisition spending and more than half of 2025 revenue. The company paid roughly 20 times disclosed pre-deal EBITDA for the Baker Hughes businesses and 4.4 times sales for Optek. Management’s operating system must now create enough profit to compensate for those prices.
Horizontally, Crane occupies an attractive middle ground. Its aerospace business has better growth and margins than many diversified industrials. Its PFT portfolio has more application specificity than a generic valve manufacturer. The company also trades below the most highly valued aerospace compounders. That middle ground is an operating advantage because the cycles diversify one another, but a valuation disadvantage because neither platform alone defines the whole company.
Curtiss-Wright offers more visible defense and naval content. HEICO has a longer and more consistent aerospace acquisition record, IDEX a longer history of decentralized fluidics compounding, Dover a cheaper way to own industrial recovery. Crane’s differentiator is the combination of double-digit current aerospace growth, process-technology optionality and a management system that is visibly raising margins. Its weakness is the amount of future acquisition success already embedded in the price.
The market may be misjudging two things in opposite directions. It may understate the durability of Crane’s aerospace original-equipment economics. Management says its OE products already earn attractive margins, reducing the mix penalty that affects peers when aircraft production accelerates. If accurate, AAT can sustain high margins even when OE grows faster than aftermarket.
The market may simultaneously overstate the certainty of acquisition returns. “Ahead of plan” currently means six months of revenue, margin and EPS evidence. It does not yet mean a realized 10% return on the 1.36 billion USD deployed. A buyer at the current price effectively pays Crane both for the acquired earnings and for the expectation that the company will create much more acquired earnings later.
Over the next year, the decisive variables are PFT’s return to positive core growth, the acquisitions’ margin progression and 2027 guidance. Another quarter of 20%-plus reported sales growth will matter less than the organic and cash-flow composition. AAT backlog conversion also needs to remain orderly rather than producing working-capital absorption.
Over three years, the key variable is acquired EBITDA. The PSI businesses must show a credible path from approximately 60 million USD toward 150 million USD without relying on constant restructuring add-backs. Optek needs to disclose or reveal through segment results that its 4.4-times-sales purchase price can earn a high return. PFT must also re-establish a 3–5% organic growth profile.
Over five years, capital allocation dominates. One successful integration would justify a higher long-term multiple and give management permission to repeat the model. A sequence of high-priced acquisitions could instead leave Crane with strong products, rising adjusted EPS and mediocre return on total invested capital. Serial acquirers often fail through price and pace rather than through poor target businesses.
Crane would become a better investment under one of three conditions. The first is price: a substantial decline without deterioration in aerospace backlog or acquisition execution. The second is proof: acquired EBITDA and free cash flow rise enough to make the current multiple less dependent on forecasts. The third is restraint: management allows the current transactions to mature before adding another large integration.
The research judgment should be overturned positively if acquired margins rise faster than promised, PFT returns sustainably to at least 3% core growth, AAT maintains high-single-digit growth and free-cash-flow conversion stays near 100%. It should be overturned negatively if AAT core growth drops below 5%, PFT remains negative through 2027, acquisition EPS contribution retreats, or leverage rises above 3 times for another high-multiple deal.
Bull reasons
- AAT produced 13.3% second-quarter core growth, a 25.8% adjusted margin and 11% core backlog growth, giving the company a visible organic engine independent of acquisitions.
- Comparable continuing operating margin rose from 13.4% in 2023 to 18.4% in 2025, while free cash flow increased from 123 million USD to 341 million USD.
- Both acquired revenue and margin are running ahead of initial assumptions, and management raised expected 2026 acquisition EPS contribution from 0.15 USD to 0.20 USD.
- PFT expanded margin despite negative core volume, while sequential orders and backlog suggest the chemical trough may be nearing an end.
Bear reasons
- Acquisitions contributed 19.8 percentage points of second-quarter growth versus 5.2 points from the underlying business, so roughly four-fifths of headline growth was purchased.
- PFT core sales declined in both reported quarters of 2026, and its long-term 3–5% organic framework is not currently being achieved.
- The Baker Hughes businesses were acquired at approximately 19.7 times disclosed pre-deal EBITDA, requiring a large profit increase before the return on capital becomes attractive.
- At about 32 times forward adjusted EPS and a 2.8–3.1% prospective FCF yield, the shares offer no valuation cushion against integration disappointment or multiple normalization.
Pre-mortem
One plausible 50% loss script begins in 2027. Commercial aircraft production remains constrained by customers and suppliers, reducing AAT core growth from high single digits to 3%. Chemical demand fails to recover, leaving PFT organically flat. The acquired sensor businesses improve EBITDA only to 80 million USD rather than moving rapidly toward 150 million USD, and Crane announces another billion-dollar transaction at more than 15 times EBITDA. Adjusted EPS stalls near 6 USD, net leverage rises above 3 times, and investors reprice the company at 18 times earnings. The resulting value is approximately 108 USD per share, 52% below the current price.
A second script centers on program and mix risk. A major aerospace customer delays production in 2028, commercial OE orders decline, and defense program timing fails to offset the gap. AAT margin falls from the mid-20s toward 20%, while PFT’s chemical recovery proves temporary. Owner earnings fall below 6 USD per share and the valuation converges toward Dover or ordinary industrial levels near 20 times. Even without financial distress, the shares could trade around 120 USD.
The source hierarchy for this report places Crane’s SEC filings, separation agreement, annual and quarterly reports, purchase-accounting disclosures and official earnings releases first. Management’s earnings-call comments are used for forecasts and explanations, not treated as audited facts. Peer operating figures come from their latest company releases, while share prices and market capitalizations use the August 5, 2026 close.
Material research uncertainties remain. Crane has not disclosed separate historical financials for Druck, Panametrics and Reuter-Stokes, or official EBITDA for Optek. It does not disclose aerospace aftermarket profit, detailed revenue by named aircraft or engine program, or a maintenance-versus-growth capex split. A fully comparable five-year current-company series does not exist because the 2023 separation and 2025 Engineered Materials disposal changed the reporting perimeter. The announced date of the next earnings release was also unavailable as of the base date. These gaps reduce the precision of program sensitivity, acquisition ROIC and historical valuation analysis.
The final judgment is that Crane is a high-quality operating company at a price that assumes high-quality acquisition execution. Aerospace has earned a premium through core growth, backlog and margin. PFT is profitable and well managed, but its current organic contraction prevents the group’s reported growth from being taken at face value. The four acquisitions fit the portfolio, yet the prices paid require years of improvement before they clearly create value.
At 223.07 USD, ownership is defensible for an existing long-term holder who accepts acquisition and multiple risk. A new buyer receives little margin of safety. The evidence supports waiting for either a much lower price or enough acquired cash flow to reduce the valuation without relying on multiple expansion. The stock is an acceptable hold, not an attractive fresh purchase at the current quotation.
