On the supporting side, the company held about 82% share in die attach and about 50% in advanced die placement in 2024, still maintained a 64.9% gross margin during the industry downturn in 2023, and its cash flow did not break down through the cycle; Applied Materials bought a 9% stake in 2025, endorsing the hybrid bonding partnership between the two sides. But the current price implies a conservative Owner Earnings multiple of about 128x. Combined with a single customer accounting for 14.7% and the risk of a high-valuation multiple collapse, the report sets the ideal buying range at €60–90 and argues for waiting until the price returns close to value before considering it.

Core View: Besi is a business I can understand, and one that is clearly better than most semiconductor equipment peers. It focuses on back-end semiconductor packaging equipment, especially high-precision die attach, advanced packaging, and hybrid bonding, with long-term tailwinds from AI, HBM, 2.5D/3D packaging, and chiplets. The company has strong share and engineering capabilities in several key niches. Historically, its cash flow, margins, and returns on capital have been excellent. Even in a relatively weak year such as 2023, it maintained high profitability and strong cash flow, which confirms the quality of the business. The issue is not whether this is a good company. The issue is whether the current price is a good price. Based on the Euronext quote of about €288.4/share as of 2026-06-03, Besi trades at roughly 151x LTM P/E, 36x P/S, 50x P/B, and about 128x conservative Owner Earnings. This is no longer paying a fair price for a good company. It looks more like paying today for success many years in the future.

Is there a margin of safety at the current price: No. If Besi is viewed as a business to acquire for the long term, rather than as a high-beta stock attached to the AI theme, the conclusion is clear: the business is good, the moat is real, and management is broadly rational, but the current price is unfriendly to balanced, relatively conservative long-term investors. At this price, even if hybrid bonding does scale materially over the next 5 to 10 years, investment returns still depend heavily on two fragile assumptions: very high growth and no meaningful valuation compression.

Suitable Investor Type: It is more suitable for investors who can tolerate high volatility, understand semiconductor equipment cycles, and accept high-valuation growth-stock pricing. It is less suitable for balanced, relatively conservative new buyers who emphasize margin of safety.

Biggest Uncertainties: First, whether the mass-production ramp of hybrid bonding is fast enough. Second, whether the AI/HBM/advanced packaging capex cycle can persist without a clear 1-2 year pullback. Third, whether the current extremely high valuation will normalize in the future, especially if growth delivery falls even slightly short of expectations.

Business Understanding and Industry Structure

How This Company Makes Money

Besi's official definition is clear: the company essentially has one main business line, developing, manufacturing, selling, and servicing back-end packaging/assembly equipment for the global semiconductor and electronics industries. Its equipment covers processes from die sorting, die bonding, molding, plating, trimming/forming, and singulation. What truly drives valuation today is higher-precision die attach, wafer/substrate-level assembly, thermo-compression bonding, and hybrid bonding for AI and advanced packaging applications. Its customers are mainly IDMs, foundries/OSATs, and large electronics/industrial companies. The company earns one-time revenue from equipment sales and generates a certain level of follow-on revenue from spare parts, tools, and services.

This business is more complex than a consumer cash cow such as Coca-Cola, but within the equipment industry, it is fairly understandable. Who the customers are, why they buy, when they expand capacity, and why they need higher-precision equipment are all relatively straightforward. The key variables are also clear: downstream semiconductor capex, packaging technology migration, Besi's advantages in precision/yield/throughput, and customer qualification cycles. The difficulty lies in technology timing and capex-cycle volatility. On the criterion of whether I can understand the business, I would give it 4/5.

The stability and predictability of revenue are "lower-middle, but better than most equipment vendors." This is a cyclical equipment business rather than a subscription model or high-frequency repeat-consumption business. Orders fluctuate meaningfully with the industry cycle. At the same time, Besi's performance from 2023 to 2025 shows that cycle exposure is only part of the story. Revenue fell to €578.9m in 2023, but net income still reached €177.1m and operating cash flow remained €208.6m. In 2025, revenue was €591.3m and net income was €131.6m. By Q1 2026, revenue had recovered to €184.9m and orders jumped to €269.7m. In other words, revenue is highly cyclical, while the profit model and cash-flow model are resilient.

On cost structure, Besi combines software/process-like high gross margin attributes with the cost control of flexible Asian manufacturing. In investor materials, the company repeatedly emphasizes coordination between European R&D centers and Asian manufacturing/supply chains. In Q1 2026, headcount increased from 1,964 at the end of 2025 to 2,217, with a clear expansion of permanent and temporary labor in Asia. The purpose was to support order recovery and hybrid bonding activity. Over the long term, this "European R&D + Asian manufacturing" setup is an important foundation for the company's high gross margins and high cash returns.

Customers, Concentration, and Industry Structure

Besi's customer structure deserves close attention. In 2021, the company's top 10 customers accounted for 53% of revenue, and one customer accounted for 10.6%. In 2023, the top 10 customers accounted for 52% of revenue, with no single customer above 10% for the year. By 2024, however, one customer accounted for 14.7% of revenue. In Q1 2026 orders, 70% came from foundries/subcontractors. This shows that Besi's customer base is meaningfully concentrated. Its technical position is strong, and customer concentration is real. This is common in equipment. It also means lost orders, delayed qualification, or paused customer capex can materially affect short-term results.

At the industry level, Besi operates in a structurally high-growth branch inside a large cyclical industry, rather than in a stable and mature industry. WSTS expects the global semiconductor market to reach $975bn in 2026 and continue strong growth. In its May 2026 materials, Besi cited TechInsights forecasts that the assembly equipment market will grow 21% in 2026 and 75% from 2025 to 2030. Yole also expects advanced packaging to keep growing faster than traditional packaging in 2025E-2030E, with advanced packaging CAGR of about 8.5%. The implication is clear: the overall industry is cyclical, and the real bet is rising advanced packaging penetration.

Besi's industry position is not weak. The company disclosed that in 2024 it had about 82% share in die attach and about 50% share in advanced die placement. It also said about 70% of equipment revenue came from advanced packaging, about 60% of equipment revenue came from advanced die placement, and about 50% of revenue was AI-related. This set of data is very important. It shows that Besi is not a second-tier equipment vendor doing a little bit of everything. It has already reached a very strong position in the most valuable precision segments of back-end packaging.

Therefore, I rate the industry's attractiveness at 4/5. More precisely, Besi is not a "perfect company in a perfect industry." It is a quality company in one of the best niches inside a cyclical industry. If the stock market closed for 5 years, I would be willing to own this business. If the purchase price were today's level, I would not act lightly.

Moat and Management

Moat Assessment

Besi's moat is not a visible consumer-brand barrier. It is an industrial moat built from the combination of technology, process capability, customer qualification, niche scale, and operating efficiency.

On brand advantage, Besi is a B2B equipment brand. Brand value appears more in process credibility and equipment reliability than in end-consumer awareness. Strictly speaking, it has an "engineering brand," not a "consumer brand." On cost advantage, the company relies on Asian manufacturing and supply-chain configuration, relatively light capital intensity, and high-precision, high-value-added products to create better through-cycle profitability than many peers. In the weak industry year of 2023, Besi still achieved a 64.9% gross margin, 30.6% net margin, and €208.6m of operating cash flow. This shows that it is not merely selling expensive equipment. It also has cost and operating advantages.

On scale advantage, Besi already has very high share in die attach and advanced die placement. This brings broader customer coverage, a larger installed base, higher R&D amortization efficiency, and a better process database. In 2024, the company had about 82% share in die attach and about 50% share in advanced die placement. It is no longer in a follower position.

On switching costs, I believe Besi is clearly above ordinary equipment vendors. The reason is not software subscription. It is customer qualification cycles, production-line process matching, yield ramp, and extremely high requirements for equipment precision and throughput. Especially in hybrid bonding, advanced die placement, and TCB, switching equipment suppliers is not simply replacing a machine. It involves process requalification, line takt, yield, and end-customer acceptance. Applied Materials bought a 9% stake in Besi in 2025 and explicitly said the investment was intended to build a long-term strategic relationship on the basis of four years of hybrid bonding collaboration. This indirectly validates Besi's importance in this process chain.

On channel advantage, Besi lacks a traditional channel barrier like a consumer-goods company. Its advantage lies in global customer coverage and local support capabilities in Asia. The company is expanding service support in Taiwan and Korea and expanding mainstream assembly capacity in Vietnam to free up more wafer-level capacity in Malaysia. This advantage is more of a "global engineering service network" than a "channel commission barrier."

On patents, licenses, regulatory barriers, and data advantage, Besi is less typical. It has technology and know-how barriers, while the truly hard-to-copy assets are process integration capability and customer qualification history, rather than any single patent document. As for network effects, there are basically none. Data advantage is weak to moderate. Corporate culture and operating capability are strengths, especially the ability to manage costs through cycles and maintain high margins and high cash returns.

Overall, I rate Besi's moat at 4/5, with the following judgment: the core moat is stable, and the hybrid-bonding-related moat is expanding, though it is still maturing. Competitors could theoretically spend heavily to enter high-precision advanced packaging, but moving from R&D to qualification to volume introduction usually takes several years and requires deep coordination with foundries and OSATs. The real danger comes from large players committing resources and changing the profit distribution in the industry, rather than from small players copying the product.

Can Management Be Trusted?

Besi CEO Richard W. Blickman has served as CEO since 1995, an exceptionally long tenure. The advantages are that he has lived through multiple industry cycles, management strategy has strong continuity, and capital allocation has a clear style. The disadvantages are that key-person risk is not low, and having the board and management narrative centered so much on one long-serving CEO reduces visibility into the second layer of management.

Looking at incentives, Besi's short-term incentive plan is not focused on revenue scale. It is built around quality metrics such as net margin, average return on equity, and operating cash flow as a percentage of revenue. The 2024 annual report clearly disclosed that within STI financial metrics, net margin accounted for 50%, ROE for 25%, and CFO/Revenue for 25%. This design is clearly better than growth-stock incentives that only chase scale.

In capital allocation, Besi has a strong record. In its May 2026 materials, the company said it had returned about €2.4bn to shareholders through dividends and buybacks since 2011, roughly one-third of historical total revenue. Total distributions in 2024 were €251.3m. The proposed 2025 dividend was €1.58/share, with a payout ratio of 95%. The annual report also showed that one of the main goals of the new 2024 buyback program was to offset dilution from convertible bonds and employee equity incentives. This shows that management is aware of shareholder returns and has executed consistently over time.

There is also a negative judgment that value investors should care about: Besi has bought back many shares, yet the share count has not fallen meaningfully on a sustained basis. Shares outstanding were about 78.49m at the end of 2022, about 77.02m at the end of 2023, then rose again to 79.31m at the end of 2024. By Q1 2026, the basic share count was about 79.24m. In other words, buybacks have mainly been used to defend against dilution from convertible conversion and employee incentives, rather than to continuously and materially reduce the share base. Capital allocation is rational, while the "per-share value uplift" is weaker than the market may perceive on the surface.

Another point that must be tracked is the convertible bond/debt structure. In Q1 2026, the company still had €175m of 2029 convertible bonds and €350m of 2031 senior notes. The company announced on 2026-05-05 that it would redeem the €175m 2029 convertible bonds early, with a redemption date of 2026-06-04. Since the conversion price is about €115.5 and the share price is far above that level, the economics are closer to "likely dilution" than to cash pressure. Based on nominal amount, full conversion would imply about 1.515 million new shares, increasing the economic share base from about 79.24m to about 80.76m. This leaves the quality of the business unchanged, while affecting per-share valuation, so it must be treated rigorously.

Overall, I give management and capital allocation 4/5: long-term oriented, disciplined in dividends and buybacks, and with a good incentive structure; however, key-person risk and dilution management are two deductions that cannot be ignored.

"FCF (strict basis)" is calculated as operating cash flow minus capex, then minus capitalized R&D. LTM/Q1-26 is a rolling basis of FY2025 + Q1-26 - Q1-25.

This table shows three extremely important facts.

First, Besi's financial resilience is very strong. Revenue fell by nearly 20% in 2023 versus 2022, but net margin remained 30.6% and operating cash flow still reached €208.6m. In 2024, although revenue only recovered moderately to €607.5m, net income was still €182.0m. In 2025, despite weakness in mobile, automotive, and industrial markets as well as a weaker dollar, the company maintained a 63.3% gross margin and €178.1m of operating cash flow. Many equipment companies see "profit evaporation + cash-flow deterioration" in downturns. Besi did not suffer that kind of collapse.

Second, accounting profit and cash flow generally match, and cash flow is often stronger. Operating cash flow of €208.6m in 2023 was higher than net income of €177.1m. Operating cash flow of €201.1m in 2024 was higher than net income of €182.0m. Operating cash flow of €178.1m in 2025 was also higher than net income of €131.6m. Even after treating capitalized R&D as a real economic cost, strict-basis FCF in 2023-2025 was still about €180.6m, €169.6m, and €136.4m, respectively. This shows Besi's profit is not "paper profit." It can truly convert into cash.

Third, growth does not require heavy fixed-asset investment. The real investments are more in R&D, process development, and some working capital, rather than massive factories and heavy assets. In 2024, company capex was only €12.0m. In 2025, it was €15.8m. In Q1 2026, capex was only €1.08m. This is a typical industrial company with high gross margins, low physical capex, and strong technology/R&D intensity.

Deeper Judgment on Financial Quality

Are profits real cash profits or accounting profits? My conclusion: they are broadly real cash profits, but capitalized R&D should be treated conservatively. The company's cash flow has generally exceeded net income in recent years, which suggests no major divergence between revenue recognition and cash collection. However, the company capitalized about €19.4m of R&D in 2024, about €26.0m in 2025, and about €5.7m in Q1 2026. This lifts current-period profit and moves part of the economic cost of R&D into future amortization. Therefore, from a value-investing perspective, net income alone is not enough. Capitalized R&D must be deducted back.

Does growth require a lot of capital investment? It requires little fixed asset investment, while still requiring sustained spending on R&D, process qualification, application labs, Asian manufacturing support, and working capital. This is still favorable. It means expansion relies more on "smart money" than on "heavy money." From 2020 to 2025, Besi's gross R&D increased from €41.5m to €87.7m, and as a percentage of revenue rose from 9.6% to 14.8%, reflecting the company's continuing push in advanced packaging.

Does the company make more money as it grows, or need more money as it grows? Past evidence suggests Besi is closer to "making more money as it grows." In Q1 2026, as revenue grew 28.3% year over year, net income grew 63.8% year over year and operating cash flow reached €93.0m. Orders, revenue, and profit improved at the same time, showing clear operating leverage. On the other hand, the margin decline in 2025 is a reminder that Besi is not an absolute "linear leverage machine." FX, product mix, and cycle position all affect margins.

Is the balance sheet sound? Yes, and quite sound. At the end of Q1 2026, the company had €611.4m of cash and deposits and net cash of €103.3m. Long-term debt was about €508.1m, mainly consisting of convertible bonds and senior notes, and the company had already started early redemption of the 2029 convertible bonds. For a company with LTM EBITDA of about €233.9m, high margins, and substantial cash reserves, debt repayment is not the core issue. The real concern is share-count dilution, not credit risk.

Are there signs of financial fraud, aggressive accounting, or earnings manipulation? Based on the public information found, I do not see clear fraud signals. I would still keep tracking three details. First, whether capitalized R&D continues rising and decouples from new-product delivery. Second, whether working capital expands too quickly when the cycle recovers. Third, whether buybacks continue to be used mainly to offset dilution rather than to increase per-share value. In other words, the current picture shows no red flags, while several yellow flags need continuous checking.

Owner Earnings and Intrinsic Value

Owner Earnings Estimate

From a Buffett-style Owner Earnings perspective, I prefer starting from the most recent rolling 12 months, rather than extrapolating from one strong quarter.

As of Q1 2026, Besi's LTM operating cash flow was about €226.7m. If capex + capitalized R&D are all treated as real costs that must be deducted, the corresponding spending was about €40.1m. If the roughly €8.1m positive working-capital cash-flow contribution over the most recent 12 months is treated as unsustainable and conservatively reset to zero, conservative Owner Earnings are about €178.5m. Based on the Q1-26 basic share count of about 79.24m, Owner Earnings/Share are about €2.25. Based on the economic share base of about 80.76m after potential conversion of the 2029 convertible bonds, the figure is about €2.21/share.

This number is very important because it converts "beautiful-looking margins" back into "cash that can truly be distributed to owners." On this basis, the current share price of €288.4 implies an Owner Earnings multiple of about 128x, or a yield of less than 0.8%. For a cyclical equipment company, this price almost requires you to believe that over the next 10 years, Besi will turn hybrid bonding into a huge market and the market will maintain an extremely high valuation premium for it for a long time.

Intrinsic Value Estimate

The valuation below does not seek a "point estimate." It seeks transparent and sufficiently conservative assumptions.

Owner Earnings Discount Method

I use conservative Owner Earnings of €178.5m as the starting point. The discount rate is 8%-9%: the reason is that the current ECB deposit rate in the euro area is about 2.0%, and the German 10-year government bond yield is about 3.0%. For a single semiconductor equipment stock, the required equity return should be meaningfully above the risk-free rate. The terminal growth rate is 3%, avoiding overly aggressive perpetual growth.

  • Conservative scenario: Owner Earnings grow 12% annually for the first 5 years and 6% for the next 5 years, with a 9% discount rate and 3% terminal growth. Implied intrinsic value per share is about €61.

  • Base scenario: Owner Earnings grow 18% annually for the first 5 years and 8% for the next 5 years, with a 9% discount rate and 3% terminal growth. Implied intrinsic value per share is about €84.

  • Bull scenario: Owner Earnings grow 25% annually for the first 5 years and 10% for the next 5 years, with an 8% discount rate and 3%-3.5% terminal growth. Implied intrinsic value per share is roughly €145-160.

These numbers look far below the market price. The reason is not that the model is deliberately pessimistic. It is that the current price has already prepaid much of the success expected many years from now. If one is willing to use more optimistic long-term margins, a lower discount rate, and a higher terminal multiple, the valuation can be raised. Even then, pushing fair value to the €250-300 range still requires very aggressive long-term assumptions. Based on the model above, my ranges are:

  • Conservative intrinsic value range: €55-80

  • Reasonable intrinsic value range: €80-120

  • Optimistic intrinsic value range: €130-170

On that basis, the current price of €288.4 is clearly at a large premium to the reasonable intrinsic value range.

Relative Valuation Method

Compared with closer back-end/packaging equipment peers, Besi's current valuation premium is extreme. Besi currently trades at roughly 151x LTM P/E, 36x P/S, and 50x P/B. ASMPT trades at about 54x TTM P/E, 5.2x P/S, and 4.7x P/B. Kulicke & Soffa's TTM P/E is distorted and even negative because it is recovering from an earnings trough, but its current P/S is about 7.1x, and its market value is only about $6.1bn. Even after considering that Besi is purer, more profitable, and more tilted toward advanced packaging, the current valuation premium has moved far beyond the reasonable boundary of a "quality premium."

More importantly, ASMPT generated about HK$13.74bn of revenue in 2025, about HK$902m of profit attributable to shareholders, and had year-end net cash of about HK$3.28bn. Besi generated only €591.3m of revenue and €131.6m of net income in 2025, yet currently enjoys multiples far above ASMPT and a market-cap imagination that is close to or even higher. This does not mean Besi deserves no premium. It means the stock is already priced for the most successful future version of the company.

Asset Value or Liquidation Value Method

For a light-asset equipment company like Besi, the asset method is more of a "floor anchor" than the main valuation method. At the end of Q1 2026, total equity was about €456.9m and net cash was about €103.3m. At the current share price, P/B is about 50x. This means buying Besi is not buying "asset discount" at all. It is almost entirely buying future cash flows and the right to technology-roadmap delivery. If there is a serious cycle error, technology-roadmap disappointment, or valuation contraction in the future, the asset side offers very limited protection for the share price.

Combining the three methods, my operating ranges are:

  • Ideal buy price range: €60-90

  • Acceptable hold price range: €90-140

  • Clearly overvalued range: above €170

The current share price of about €288.4 is clearly in the "good company, bad price" zone.

Margin of Safety, Risks, and the Opposing Case

Margin of Safety

Besi's current price has almost no margin of safety. The most fragile valuation assumption is not "whether it will grow." It is "whether it can sustain high growth for many years while the valuation does not fall meaningfully." If any part of that chain deviates, for example hybrid bonding adoption is slower than market enthusiasm implies, or AI-related packaging demand in 2027-2030 is less smooth than currently expected, returns for buyers at today's price would be severely eroded.

If growth is below expectations, could the investment still work? For "business quality," the answer is possibly yes. For "investment return at today's price," the answer is probably no. Besi's moat and margins are enough to support its status as a quality company, but they cannot guarantee satisfactory returns for those who buy today. This is the most dangerous trap in value investing: the company can be right while the price is wrong.

If future margins decline, does the thesis still hold? If net margin simply falls from 30%+ to the 20% range, the business would still be a good business. But the stock may not be a good investment. Current valuation is already built heavily on the dual delivery of "scale expansion + sustained high-quality profitability." If margins prove closer to traditional equipment-company levels, valuation multiples will almost certainly compress.

Risks and the Strongest Opposing Case

The most important risk is not share-price volatility. It is permanent capital loss, mainly from the following sources.

Competition and technology-path risk. Hybrid bonding is the core of Besi's current story. The technology has attractive prospects, but it is still in a gradual adoption phase. If TCB, other packaging paths, or customer in-house/alternative solutions delay HB scaling, the market may reassess Besi's long-term growth ceiling. Besi itself acknowledges that hybrid bonding is still expanding into multiple use cases across logic, memory, CPO, and consumer applications. This means adoption is still forming. It is not yet a fully mature, irreversible reality.

Cycle risk. Semiconductor equipment has never been a stable, linear industry. In 2025, Besi's revenue still fell 2.7% year over year, mainly because mobile, automotive, and industrial markets were weak. The industry recovery is uneven. AI is indeed pulling advanced packaging demand, but if AI infrastructure investment overheats and then pulls back, Besi's order elasticity will amplify in the opposite direction.

Customer concentration and alliance risk. The top 10 customers have long contributed more than half of revenue, and in 2024 one customer accounted for 14.7%. At the same time, alliances, M&A, and supply-chain integration in the semiconductor industry can strengthen large-customer bargaining power. Besi's own annual report lists "loss of customers and further customer concentration caused by industry alliances" as risks.

Supply chain, geopolitics, FX, and regulatory risk. The company's manufacturing and customer focus are both concentrated in Asia. The Q1-26 results announcement specifically discussed how new tariffs, trade restrictions, and changes in export regulations could affect demand, costs, and supply-chain complexity. 2025 margins were also already affected by the U.S. dollar's depreciation against the euro. For this type of global equipment vendor, geopolitics and FX are real risks, not surface noise.

Management and capital allocation risk. The CEO's very long tenure is an advantage and also a key-man risk. Buybacks have been executed well historically, but most buybacks mainly offset dilution, and at extremely high valuations, the marginal value of buybacks declines.

Valuation risk. This is the central risk today and the fundamental reason I do not give a Buy rating. The current valuation is far beyond "slightly expensive." It is built on multiple optimistic assumptions all being true at the same time. If growth is a little slower, margins a little weaker, conversion dilutes per-share earnings, or market style shifts toward cash returns, Besi could experience a situation where the business barely deteriorates while the share price falls sharply first.

The strongest opposing case is simple: Besi may be an excellent company, but today's market price has already pulled forward much of the success expected for 2028-2032. If hybrid bonding ultimately becomes one important solution in a large market, rather than a dominant excess-profit pool; if advanced packaging expansion is less smooth than the market imagines; if the company's long-term profit scale ultimately reaches several hundred million euros rather than the billion-euro level, then investors buying at more than 100x Owner Earnings today may face years of low or even negative returns. I consider this opposing case strong.

What facts would make me admit this judgment is wrong? If the following facts appear over the next 2-3 years, I would conclude that my valuation skepticism was wrong: First, hybrid bonding moves beyond order growth and truly becomes a scaled revenue and profit center, driving company revenue clearly toward €1bn+. Second, Besi can maintain credibility around its roughly 40% operating margin target while scaling. Third, per-share cash earnings growth is strong enough to let today's high valuation be gradually absorbed by results, rather than continuing to rely on thematic sentiment. Conversely, if by around 2027 HB still has not moved from "qualification/introduction" to "broad mass production," or if the advanced packaging revenue mix rises without a corresponding margin improvement, then the overvaluation conclusion should be held more firmly.

Compared with the strongest comparable peer, ASMPT, Besi is purer, more focused on advanced packaging, and more profitable, and the market is willing to assign it a higher valuation. At today's price, however, Besi's premium has already gone far beyond "better business quality" itself. Compared with KLIC, Besi has stronger business quality and a better technology position, but KLIC's valuation is significantly lower and its recovery optionality is greater. Put simply: Besi is the better business, but it is not necessarily the better investment at the current price.

Compared with broad market indices, buying Besi today does not look clearly better than buying the index. The advantages of the index are that investors avoid betting on a single technology path, customer concentration and qualification-timing risk, and paying more than 100x Owner Earnings. Besi may certainly outperform the index in some years. On a 10-year starting-point basis and after adjusting for risk, I am more inclined to view it at the current price as an excellent watchlist company, rather than a core position that should receive capital priority.

Compared with risk-free rates/high-grade bonds, current euro-area risk-free yields are not high. The ECB deposit rate is about 2.0%, and the German 10-year government bond yield is around 3%. Besi certainly has more growth optionality than bonds. The issue is that at such a high valuation, the stock does not provide investors with sufficient excess compensation. Value investing is not only about "can it rise." It is about "how much compensation do I receive for the risk taken." On this point, today's Besi is not generous.

If I could hold only 5 assets, Besi would not qualify for the portfolio at the current price. If the share price falls significantly in the future because of an industry correction, technology doubts, or a market-style shift, while the fundamentals and HB order/revenue ramp remain intact, then it would deserve to re-enter the core candidate list.

The real driver of its ten-year upside imagination is the latter (AI/HBM-driven hybrid bonding, TCB, 2.5D/3D), not the mediocre growth of traditional back-end packaging. The issue is that this "new high-value market" is still small in absolute size (hybrid bonding equipment is only a several-hundred-million-dollar market even in 2030), and Besi already has about 82% share in the most core die attach segment, leaving limited room for further share gains. Its ceiling therefore looks more like structural expansion with a steep slope but a modest absolute value, rather than the "from 0 to trillion" entirely new large market that LTGG prefers.

    First quantify the pie. Besi's directly addressable market is semiconductor back-end assembly/packaging equipment, and the total pool is not large: according to Yole Group estimates, the entire back-end equipment market grows from about $6.9bn in 2025 to $9.2bn in 2030, a CAGR of only about 5.8%. That is the essence of the "large-cycle industry" described in the research report: it follows semiconductor capex cycles and grows moderately. The WSTS anchor cited in the report, "2026 global semiconductors $975bn", is already outdated: in its latest forecast in early June 2026, WSTS sharply raised 2026 to about $1.51 trillion (about +90% YoY, mainly because AI/HBM demand exceeded expectations). But it is important to note that a doubling of the end semiconductor market does not mean a doubling of the back-end equipment market. Equipment is a capex subsegment, and its growth rate is far below chip sales themselves. So if we only look at "expanding an existing pie", Besi's ceiling is limited and highly cyclical.

    The real story lies in the second nature: taking position in a "quasi-new market" where low-value process steps are being pushed into high-value process steps. AI, HBM, chiplets, and CPO are moving back-end processes away from mediocre steps such as dicing and wire bonding toward high-precision, high-ASP, high-yield-barrier steps such as hybrid bonding, TCB, and advanced die placement. Yole's breakdown makes the "structural vs cyclical" divergence very clear: hybrid bonding equipment revenue is expected to rise from about $152m in 2025 to about $397m in 2030 (CAGR about 21.1%), while TCB equipment rises from about $542m to about $936m (CAGR about 11.6%). By comparison, traditional flip-chip bonders grow only about 5%, die bonders about 3.6%, and wire bonding about 3%. At the same time, advanced packaging penetration of the overall packaging market is rising from about 40% in 2020 to more than 60% in 2030, while the overall advanced packaging market is expected to grow at about 9.5% CAGR in 2024–2030 to $79.4bn. This maps directly to Besi's internal mix disclosed in the report: about 70% of equipment revenue comes from advanced packaging and about 50% of revenue is AI-related. It shows that Besi has already placed itself in the fastest-growing, highest-ASP segment, rather than the traditional segment crushed by cycles.

    But "a high ceiling" must be separated from "how much Besi can actually capture". There are three hard constraints. First, the absolute volume ceiling is low: even by 2030, hybrid bonding equipment is only about a $397m global pool, and Besi cannot take all of it (ASMPT, K&S, Applied Materials, and others are all competing). This does not strictly match the "huge, exclusive new market" required by LTGG's search for "great growth stocks that can fivefold over the next decade". Second, the richest segment is already near saturation: the report discloses that Besi's 2024 die attach share is already about 82% and advanced die placement about 50%.     My judgment: a revenue CAGR of about 15%–22% over the next five years is a reasonable midpoint range. Doubling (to €1.26bn+) is highly realistic and will likely happen before 2031. But "doubling" itself is already the market's base-case assumption and is not a source of excess return. The risk lies in the path, not the direction. If AI/HBM capex experiences a 1–2 year temporary pullback, the strong cyclicality will magnify order elasticity in reverse, pushing back the timing of the doubling or even causing revenue to fall in a particular year (as shown by 2023→2025). Therefore, to LTGG's question of "why has the market not realized this yet", the honest answer here is: the market has long realized it and has fully priced the doubling. Consensus revenue of around €1.5bn in 2028 matches the lower end of the company's target. The only remaining unpriced upside is the dual realization of "approaching the €1.9bn upper end + maintaining 40%+ operating margin". That is exactly the fragile premise repeatedly emphasized in the report, and the root of the missing margin of safety at the current ~151x valuation.
