For ASM, the more important point is that it is not exposed to "all WFE," but to the deposition subsegment within WFE. The company says it has a leading market share of >55% in single-wafer ALD and aims to maintain that level through 2030, while continuing to expand share in Epi. For GAA nodes entering mass production and later 1.4nm/1.0nm nodes, ASM believes the serviceable markets for ALD and Epi will continue to expand. ASM has some pricing power, but it is not consumer-brand pricing power. It is process-value pricing: when customers compete for capacity and yield at 2nm, in HBM, or in advanced packaging, equipment that can bring a little more performance, yield, throughput, and stability becomes less price-sensitive. ASM improved gross margin from 49.3% to 50.5% and then to 51.8% from 2023 to 2025, and still maintained a 49.8% gross margin in Q4 2025 when revenue declined year over year. This indicates that its price/product mix capability is real.

Breaking down the moat, my judgment is as follows:

To replicate its position, competitors need more than capital. They need years of process accumulation, leading-customer qualification, and 5-10 years of product iteration time. Still, I would not describe it as "unassailable": major customers are powerful, technology paths can change, and competitors have deep pockets. The moat is deep, but not absolute.

As for inflation and downturn conditions, ASM has already shown that it can preserve profitability in moderate headwinds: in 2023, under softer market conditions, it still achieved a 26.6% operating margin; in 2025, despite obvious weakness in power/analog/wafer and a normalization of China memory demand, full-year adjusted operating margin still reached 30.2%. Therefore, I think it can remain profitable during economic weakness, but it should not be treated as a defensive stock.

Management and Capital Allocation

ASM is currently led by Hichem M'Saad as CEO and Paul Verhagen as CFO. The official management page discloses that Hichem has a background in materials and electronic materials science and has authored many technical articles and patents; Paul has served as CFO since 2021. More importantly, Hichem is not an "air-dropped financial CEO." He rose through thermal products, global products, and CTO roles, giving him deep frontline experience with the company's ALD/Epi/PECVD/furnace product lines. For a technology-oriented semiconductor equipment company, this background matters more than that of a pure professional manager.

My assessment of management's "honesty and rationality" is positive, not because they are always conservative, but because they put unfavorable information on the table. For example, early in 2025 the company clearly stated that China revenue was expected to decline; for full-year 2025, it again candidly stated that China equipment sales still accounted for 30%+, but declined year over year; in Q1 2026, it simultaneously pointed to strong AI demand and rising risks from geopolitical conflict, energy prices, GDP, and supply-chain pressure. This kind of language does not sound like "storytelling only." It sounds more like the language of real operators.

On capital allocation, ASM's priorities are very clear: first invest to support future growth, then maintain a strong balance sheet, then pay a sustainable dividend, and finally return excess cash through buybacks. This is the order I want to see. The company reiterated this framework in its 2025 Investor Day and Q1 2026 materials, while setting FY30 targets: revenue of >€5.7bn, operating margin of 28-32%, and free cash flow of >€1bn. This shows that management has not made "buybacks" the first priority, instead placing R&D, capacity, talent, and global footprint ahead of it. For long-term owners, that is a more rational capital allocation stance.

On dividends and buybacks, ASM is doing something small and steady, not aggressive leveraged shareholder returns. Start with the core financial profile from 2021 to 2025. The table below is mainly compiled from the company's official Q4 2021, Q4 2022, Q4 2023, Q4 2024, and Q4 2025 materials; certain CAGR, ratio, and owner earnings figures are my calculations based on those original data.

Looking only at the trend, the conclusion is very attractive: from 2021 to 2025, revenue rose from €1.73bn to €3.17bn, a four-year CAGR of roughly 16%; adjusted operating margin improved from 28.4% to 30.2%; and operating cash flow increased from €381m to €1.06bn. This is almost the textbook profile of "high-quality growth." In the softer industry environment of 2023, the company still achieved a 26.6% operating margin; in 2025, even with weakness in power/analog/wafer and a year-over-year decline in Q4 revenue, full-year gross margin and operating margin still reached high levels.

But two points in the financial statements must be pulled out separately, otherwise one can overestimate the quality of "accounting profit."

The first is non-cash volatility from the ASMPT associate investment. In 2022, reported net income was depressed by an impairment charge on ASMPT; in 2023, reported net income was lifted by an impairment reversal; similar volatility did not fully disappear in 2024 and 2025. Therefore, reported net income is not the same as operating earnings power. When analyzing ASM, more reliable metrics are operating cash flow, adjusted operating profit, and adjusted net income after excluding these associate-accounting swings. This is not a sign of accounting fraud, but rather "a lot of noise" created by accounting treatment.

The second is capitalized development expenditure. In 2025, the company had Gross R&D of 512m, of which 205m was capitalized, leaving current-period net R&D expense of 409m. This means that if you only look at the net R&D expense in the income statement, you may underestimate the cash the company truly invests to maintain technological leadership. ASM discloses this transparently, which I think improves analyzability; but for value investors, this portion must be treated as a real economic cost in owner earnings.

The balance sheet is very strong. At the end of 2025, the company had €1.03bn in cash; at the end of Q1 2026, it still had €982m, and it continues to emphasize no debt. Under this capital structure, net debt/EBITDA is effectively negative, and financial leverage risk is very low. Even during cyclical volatility, ASM has not relied on debt to maintain shareholder returns or acquisition expansion, which is very important for conservative investors.

Working capital is also improving. In 2025, the company disclosed that working capital days fell from 50 days to 45 days; year-end accounts receivable declined from €789m to €562m, inventory slipped from €567m to €552m, and contract liabilities rose from €486m to €506m. On returns, if roughly calculated using average equity and average total assets, ASM's recent ROE has generally been in the high teens to mid-20s, while ROA has been in the low teens to high teens range; using adjusted net income would make the return profile smoother. The real difficulty is ROIC: because the company has a lot of cash and also holds the ASMPT associate investment, ROIC is highly sensitive to whether cash and associate assets are deducted. Conservatively, this is a high-return-on-capital company. More cautiously, an exact ROIC range would require full annual-report notes and a unified definition; public summary materials are not enough to provide a completely undisputed figure.

From an owner earnings perspective, I provide a conservative estimate. Using 2025 as an example: operating cash flow of €1,061m, minus PPE capex of €218m, minus capitalized development expenditure of €205m, minus purchases of intangible assets and other investments of €53m, plus associate dividends of €7m, yields roughly €592m in "conservative owner earnings." If part of the favorable 2025 working-capital release is further reversed, normalized owner earnings may be closer to €520m-€600m. Based on this, the current market capitalization corresponds to an owner earnings multiple of about 74-85x. That is not value-stock pricing; it is high-end pricing within quality growth.

Therefore, this company's profits are not fake, but if you only look at reported net income or PE, it is easy to be misled by "associate investment volatility" and "capitalized R&D." The conclusion closer to economic reality is: ASM can indeed produce distributable cash flow over the long term, but to maintain its leadership position it must also continue to invest heavily in R&D and development cash each year. Not all accounting profit should be treated as freely distributable money for shareholders.

Valuation and Margin of Safety

Owner Earnings DCF

My starting point is not accounting net income, but the conservative owner earnings described above. In the valuation, I additionally add back year-end cash of €1.03bn and the associate investment, mainly ASMPT, with a carrying value of €845m as non-operating assets. Based on this, I conducted a 10-year three-scenario valuation; these results are my calculations based on official financial data, not company guidance.

The most important point in this table is not "precision to the single euro." It is what it reveals about the requirements implied by the current price: one almost has to believe that ASM can continue compounding owner earnings at roughly 14% for the next decade while also enjoying a lower discount rate for today's share price to be barely reasonable. For balanced but conservative investors, that assumption depends too much on future delivery.

Relative Valuation

On relative valuation, ASM is also not cheap. ASM is currently roughly in the range of PE 44.5x, P/S 13.3x, P/B 9.9x, and EV/EBITDA 34.8x; Applied Materials is roughly at PE 47.1x, P/S 13.5x, P/B 16.3x, and EV/EBITDA 34.8x on comparable metrics; ASML is around PE 56.6x, P/S 16.8x, P/B 25.6x, and EV/EBITDA 44.2x; Tokyo Electron's PE is around 49.2x; and Lam Research's current PE is around 64x. This says two things. First, the entire high-end semiconductor equipment sector is expensive. Second, although ASM is somewhat cheaper than ASML, it is not cheap enough to create an obvious margin of safety. It looks more like "a first-tier quality-growth stock priced as such" than "a second-tier asset being sold at a discount."

Therefore, relative valuation cannot support a "cheap" conclusion. The best explanation is simply that the market is willing to pay a high premium for ASM's niche leadership in ALD, exposure to AI/GAA/HBM/advanced packaging, and strong balance sheet. The issue is that expensive peers do not make ASM cheap.

Asset or Liquidation Value

ASM is not a stock suited to purchase on "liquidation value." At the end of 2025, the company had roughly €1.03bn in cash and about €845m in associate investments; even if receivables, inventory, and equipment are included at conservative haircuts and all liabilities are deducted, the value from a liquidation lens would only be in the tens of euros per share range, far below the current share price near €900. In other words, ASM's investment case depends almost entirely on future free cash flow delivery over the next decade, not on a discount to existing assets.

Intrinsic Value Range and Entry Point

Based on the three methods above, my conclusion is:

  • Conservative intrinsic value range: €280-400

  • Reasonable intrinsic value range: €450-650

  • Bullish intrinsic value range: €700-850

  • Current price versus reasonable value: clear premium

I rank the most important risks by "permanent capital loss," not short-term volatility.

First is overvaluation risk. The easiest way for a good company to hurt investors is often not business deterioration, but being bought too expensively.

But if customers delay adoption, AI infrastructure investment cools, or 1.4nm/more advanced nodes slow down, the company could quickly shift from being valued as a "high-growth equipment vendor" back to the framework of a "cyclical equipment vendor."

Third is China and regulatory risk. In 2025, China equipment revenue still accounted for 30%+ of company revenue, and ASM had previously clearly expected China revenue to decline and be affected by export controls. If restrictions tighten further, or Chinese vendors accelerate substitution at mature nodes, ASM's revenue structure and margins could come under pressure.

The issue is not "how large are semiconductor equipment or ALD as a field," but "how high is the ceiling ASM can actually address, and what kind of ceiling is it." The answer is that ASM is increasing its share and volume inside an existing structurally growing pie, namely advanced deposition, especially single-wafer ALD and Epitaxy, rather than opening a market that did not exist before.
