ABB is a Swiss industrial electrical giant. In simple terms, it makes equipment that runs from large power grids to factory sockets, as well as motors and automated production lines. This report rates it Watch, meaning the company is strong, but the current price is on the expensive side and is not an attractive entry point.

Its most profitable business is Electrification, which makes power distribution equipment, switchgear, building power systems, and power supply equipment used in data centers. AI data centers are being built everywhere now, and they need exactly this kind of electrical equipment, so this business is both large and highly profitable. Last year it contributed about half of the company's revenue.

Its ability to make money is genuinely strong. Over the years, management has kept selling businesses that did not earn enough and retaining the better ones, gradually lifting profitability. Last year, its own capital generated about 25% in one year. Debt is extremely low, cash on hand is roughly balanced with borrowings, and there is almost no net debt, giving the company a very stable base.

So why still call it expensive? The share price rose from 45 francs to 83 francs in one year, almost doubling. Based on current profits, buying the whole company would take about 38 years to earn back the purchase price, roughly 60% higher than its own average over the past 10 years and also more expensive than peers. More importantly, professionals broadly think it should be worth 64 to 73 francs, below the current share price. The report is concerned that current strong results are supported by one-off gains from property sales, and growth depends too much on data-center investment. If this wave cools, both the price and profits could fall together.

The report's conclusion is to put it on the watchlist and wait for a cheaper price. At today's level, it does not offer good value.

1. Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF)

Rating: Watch (good company, expensive price). ABB is a first-tier global leader in electrification and automation, with FY2025 revenue of $33.22 billion, operating EBITA margin of 19.0%, ROCE of 25.3%, free cash flow of $4.566 billion at a record high, and a balance sheet close to net cash (net debt only $1.68 billion, 0.25× EBITDA). The business quality is genuinely strong. Over the past six years, the combination of the decentralized "ABB Way" operating model and continuous portfolio pruning lifted operating EBITA margin from 11.1% in 2020 to 19.0% and ROCE to 25.3%. In one sentence: this is a company worth putting on a watchlist and waiting for a better price, but the current price is not a good entry point.

2. Company Profile: How ABB Makes Money

ABB Ltd is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, has about 110,000 employees across more than 100 countries, and is an industrial electrical giant spanning "from grid to cabinet, from motors to factory automation." Important reporting update: ABB is no longer the "four-division" company many investors remember. Starting in Q4 2025, after the divestment of the industrial robotics business and the integration of the former Discrete Automation business (Machine Automation / B&R) into Process Automation with a renamed structure, ABB has been reorganized into three business areas. The three businesses make money in different ways. Electrification provides the full set of power distribution and electrical products from substations to sockets: medium- and low-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, power distribution, busways, smart buildings, installation products, and medium-voltage UPS for data centers. It earns money through high-frequency repeat orders for short-cycle products plus project execution, and it is ABB's largest, highest-margin, fastest-growing revenue engine. Motion makes motors, variable-frequency drives, and traction converters, helping industrial customers improve energy efficiency; it is a global share leader in motors and drives. Automation serves process, hybrid, and marine industries, including oil and gas, chemicals, mining, power, ship electrification, and ports. It is more long-cycle and project-based, has the lowest margin, and drags down group margin. That is also why ABB chose to divest the lower-margin robotics business and focus on electrification plus motion.

The key profit-structure point: Electrification contributes about 65% of operating EBITA with 52% of revenue ($4.081 billion / $6.314 billion), making it the core of ABB's value. Motion is a stable contributor. Automation is sizable, but its 14% margin makes it the relative "weak link plus option" in the portfolio. Understanding ABB is essentially about understanding what the high-ROCE, strong-cash-flow electrification business, which benefits from data centers and the grid supercycle, is worth.

3. Vertical Analysis: From "Century-Old Merger" to "Focused Electrification"

ABB's history is not a simple chronology. It is a portfolio-management history of "getting larger → near-death recovery → deliberate slimming → focused quality improvement," broadly in five phases:

  • 1988 cross-border merger of equals and a decentralized DNA. Sweden's ASEA and Switzerland's BBC Brown Boveri, two long-standing rivals, merged in January 1988 to form ABB. From birth, it was a global power and automation giant with about $15 billion in revenue and 160,000 employees. First CEO Percy Barnevik was known for extreme decentralization, cutting the group headquarters from 2,000 people to 176.   • 2000–2006 near-death asbestos liabilities. ABB inherited asbestos liabilities when it acquired U.S.-based Combustion Engineering in 1990. By 2002, accumulated claims exceeded 110,000, and the high leverage from its expansion era pushed the company close to bankruptcy. It ultimately resolved the matter by establishing a $1.43 billion asbestos trust.   • 2015–2020 activist pressure and the sale of Power Grids. In 2015, activist fund Cevian Capital took a stake and publicly pressured ABB to separate Power Grids. At the end of 2018, ABB announced the sale of Power Grids to Hitachi at an enterprise value of $11 billion. The 80.1% stake closing was completed in July 2020, forming what later became Hitachi Energy, and ABB fully exited in 2022. Net proceeds were about $7.6–7.8 billion, with a commitment to return the full amount to shareholders. This was the most significant cut in ABB's history: it voluntarily sold the transmission and distribution core business that traced back to BBC's original foundation.   • 2020–2024 "ABB Way" and focused quality improvement. Björn Rosengren became CEO in March 2020 and introduced the "ABB Way," a decentralized operating model that pushed P&L responsibility down to about 20 divisions, used scorecard-based accountability, and prioritized stabilizing profitability before growth. ABB also kept pruning the portfolio: in 2021 it sold the Dodge mechanical power transmission business to RBC Bearings for $2.9 billion; in 2022 it spun off Accelleron, the turbocharging business; and the loss-making E-mobility charging business was increasingly marginalized.   • 2024–2025 CEO transition and robotics sale. In August 2024, internally promoted Morten Wierød took over as CEO. He had previously led Electrification, where margin rose from 16% to 20% during his tenure. ABB appoints Wierød In October 2025, ABB changed course from its original plan to spin off the robotics business and instead agreed to sell it directly to SoftBank at an enterprise value of $5.375 billion (details in Section 7). This history shows two things. First, ABB's portfolio discipline of "sell what should be sold, sell at high prices, and return the money to shareholders" has created real value. Second, the current high margin and high ROCE are essentially the result of a cleaner portfolio plus cyclical strength. In valuation work, one must separate structural quality improvement from cyclical tailwinds.

4. Vertical Financial Review

ABB's cleanest six-year trend line is not revenue, which has been repeatedly restated and made less comparable by portfolio changes, but the step-up in margin and cash returns:

A few key points:

  • Margin expansion is the core story of this company. Operating EBITA margin has risen by about 8 percentage points over six years (11.1%→19.0%), driven by decentralized accountability, portfolio optimization (cutting lower-return businesses), positive pricing during inflation, and operating leverage on high short-cycle volumes. FY2025 gross margin of 41.1% (+1.9pct) is the underlying support.

  • Use the right EPS denominator (important correction). Some third-party databases, such as EODHD, still show ABB diluted EPS at about $2.10, which is a stale figure roughly equal to FY2024's $2.13. ABB's official FY2025 diluted EPS was $2.59 (+21%), and rolling TTM EPS as of 2026Q1 was about $2.72. Using the wrong EPS would make PE look about 50x and understate value by about 20%. All multiples in this report use the correct EPS and FX translation.

  • The balance sheet is very robust. At FY2025-end, net debt was only $1.683 billion, net debt/EBITDA about 0.25×, goodwill $9.637 billion (21.5% of total assets, a potential impairment pocket to monitor), equity attributable to ABB $16.087 billion, and ROCE 25.3% (target has been raised to >20%).

  • Capital allocation is disciplined and return-oriented. The dividend is paid progressively in CHF and has increased for six consecutive years (FY2019 CHF 0.80 → FY2025 CHF 0.94). ABB dividend page Ongoing cancellation-style buybacks have reduced shares outstanding from about 2.1 billion to about 1.82 billion, and in February 2026 ABB launched another program of up to $2.0 billion through January 2027. 5. Business Model and Moat

Revenue and cost structure. ABB is a classic "multi-end-market, multi-region, products + projects + services" portfolio. About 71% of revenue is non-USD (euro about 22%, renminbi about 11%). Electrification and Motion are mainly short-cycle product businesses, while Automation is more long-cycle project-oriented. R&D and the global manufacturing network are heavy fixed-cost items. When scale expands, operating leverage is positive (a meaningful part of FY2025 margin expansion came from high volume), but when volume and pricing roll over, deleveraging can also magnify profit declines. That is the two-sided nature of a cyclical industrial company.

Moat: real but not impregnable. Three defensible elements matter most.

  • Large installed base plus switching costs (the strongest). ABB has decades of installed base across power distribution, motors, and process control. Once industrial customers choose ABB for mission-critical power/control links, replacement involves downtime, recertification, and training. Switching costs are high, and they create high-margin aftermarket service and repeat orders. This moat is shared by the leading electrification/automation companies, but ABB is among the largest.

  • Scale economies plus global delivery network. In businesses such as medium- and low-voltage electrical equipment and motors, where cost, lead time, and localization matter, ABB's global procurement, manufacturing, and channel scale provide cost and service advantages. About 85% of China revenue is locally manufactured, which keeps the company close to demand while buffering tariffs. ABB China

  • Brand and certification barriers. In areas such as electrical safety and process safety, where failures are extremely costly, ABB's brand and compliance certifications are entry barriers in themselves, especially for reliability-sensitive customers in data centers, utilities, and marine.

The moat's boundary must be stated honestly. In the data-center white space, including low-voltage UPS, rack PDUs, and cooling, ABB is clearly weaker than Vertiv/Schneider, and it has almost no exposure to cooling. In China's low-voltage drives and automation market, local players such as Inovance are continuing to take share from ABB and Siemens. Management and governance (a positive). The decentralized "ABB Way" is the institutional foundation of the margin step-up. CEO Wierød was promoted internally and understands the model. The capital allocation record, including selling at high prices, returning cash to shareholders, and maintaining progressive dividends plus buybacks, is disciplined. The equity structure is clean: single-class registered shares, one share one vote, no dual-class structure, and no family or state control. The largest shareholder is Investor AB, controlled by Sweden's Wallenberg family, with a roughly 14.4% stake and continuing purchases. It is a high-quality long-term anchor shareholder. 6. Industry and Cycle Analysis

Growth in the track is driven by several structural forces at once: data-center power (the strongest single driver in this cycle), grid investment and energy transition, electrification of everything and manufacturing reshoring, and industrial automation. The first three, on the electrification side, are strong. The fourth, discrete automation, is instead in a cyclical trough. This distinction matters: in FY2025, Siemens Digital Industries comparable revenue was -4%, and Rockwell revenue was only +1%. Cyclicality: short-cycle and long-cycle coexist, with short-cycle the larger part. ABB does not disclose a unified short-/long-cycle split, but its structure supports an estimate: within Electrification, which accounts for about 52% of group revenue, about two-thirds of orders are short-cycle products/services, and about half go through third-party distributors. That means ABB has limited visibility into end demand and is exposed to channel restocking/destocking whiplash. Long-cycle exposure is concentrated in Automation, where FY2025 orders were +33% and book-to-bill was 1.23, driven by large marine/port orders.

The current cycle is on the high side. FY2025 group book-to-bill was 1.11, and backlog was $25.3 billion (+27%), providing strong 2026 revenue visibility. In 2026Q1, orders climbed further to comparable +24%, with record book-to-bill of 1.29. ABB Q1 2026 results The most fragile variable in a downturn is short-cycle orders, which contract quickly with industrial PMI and customer inventories. A book-to-bill below 1 would be a leading warning sign. Discrete/machinery, still weak in FY2025, and process-industry capex, where pulp and paper, chemicals, and mining were already soft in FY2025, are also vulnerable.

7. Horizontal Peer Comparison

ABB's peer set has three circles. The closest electrification peers are Schneider and Eaton. The broad industrial peer is Siemens. Automation peers are Rockwell in discrete automation and Emerson in process automation. GE Vernova is a reference point for the grid/power-generation side.   • GEV's PE-TTM is distorted downward by a one-off deferred tax gain, while EV/EBITDA is distorted upward by EBITDA still being at a low ramp-up base. Margin bases are not directly comparable: the three U.S. names (Eaton/Emerson/Rockwell) use segment metrics excluding corporate costs, usually 3–5 percentage points higher than group-level margins. How to read the table:

  • Schneider is ABB's closest pure electrification benchmark. It has the same structure of "high-margin electrification (Energy Management 21.8%) plus weaker automation (14.2%)" and is the global number one in data-center power.   • Eaton is the U.S. electrical leader, strong in data centers and growing faster (+10%). Its valuation is close to ABB's (PE 38.7x). Both Eaton and ABB are partners in Nvidia's 800VDC data-center power architecture. Eaton FY2025 results

  • Siemens is the cheapest (PE 27.8x, EV/EBITDA 19.8x), but it is more diversified, with healthcare, rail, and a stake in Siemens Energy, so it carries an SOTP discount.

  • Automation is ABB's relative weakness: ABB's Automation division margin is 14.0%, far below Emerson process automation at 27.6% segment margin and Rockwell at 20.4% segment margin.

Ecosystem conclusion: ABB is a "leader" in electrification, a "share leader" in motion, and a "challenger/niche player" in automation. Its differentiated position is in medium-voltage and grid-side infrastructure from grid to cabinet: medium-voltage switchgear, HiPerGuard medium-voltage UPS, busways, prefabricated eHouses, and DC/solid-state distribution for Nvidia's 800VDC architecture. Horizontally, ABB is a first-rate company, but valuation sits on the expensive side of the peer group rather than offering a discount.

8. Current Fundamentals and Bull-Bear Debate

Recent performance is strong, but margin quality needs careful reading. In 2026Q1, revenue was $8.734 billion (+18%, comparable +11%), orders were $11.298 billion (comparable +24%, a record high), and operating EBITA margin was 23.5%. But management itself explained that a large part of the 23.5% came from a one-off Zurich real estate disposal gain. Of the 320bp improvement, about 250bp came from the real estate gain, leaving only about 70bp of true operating improvement, while gross margin fell 2.9 percentage points year over year. What the market is currently trading: a dual story of electrification supercycle plus portfolio quality improvement. Data centers are the strongest engine for Electrification. In FY2025, ABB won multiple data-center project orders above $100 million, totaling about $600 million, and the CEO described growth as "very strong double-digit." ABB Q4 2025 results Add the robotics sale, sharper focus, and higher margin and ROCE targets, and the market has rerated ABB from an "industrial conglomerate around 18–24x" into a "quality electrification compounder around 38x." The problem is that the last leg, from 24x to 38x, has been driven mainly by momentum over the past 12–18 months and coincides with downward revisions to earnings expectations. Bull-bear debate:

  • Bull case: Electrification is a structural long runway (data centers, grid, electrification), and ABB is a leader with high ROCE (25%), near net cash, strong FCF, and good governance. The portfolio is still improving, the 18–22% margin target leaves room, and strong orders (book-to-bill 1.29) provide 2026 visibility.

  • Bear case: Valuation is at the top of its own history and the peer group, while sell-side target prices are already below the current price. Current margin includes one-off gains, and gross margin is down. Growth depends heavily on data-center capex, already at elevated levels, and on sensitive short-cycle orders. A fading weak-dollar tailwind becomes an FX translation headwind. China is weak and local competition is rising. Selling robotics reduces growth optionality. The key point: the bull arguments are largely priced in, while the bear arguments are not.

9. Valuation Analysis

Start with cash-flow look-through. ABB's operating cash flow and net income match well over time. In FY2025, operating cash flow was $5.469 billion and net income was $4.734 billion. Depreciation is light, which also means EBITDA is only about $7.0 billion and EV/EBITDA is naturally high. FCF of $4.566 billion implies an FCF yield of only about 2.4% on market capitalization.

Historical percentile: at its own ceiling. ABB's 10-year average PE (ADR basis) is about 24.2x, while the current roughly 38–40x is about 59% above the 10-year average and the highest TTM PE in the entire sequence since 2020. macrotrends ABB PE The valuation center has indeed moved structurally higher because of portfolio optimization and margin improvement, and that rerating is reasonable. But "reasonable rerating to about 24–28x" and "racing to 38–40x" are different propositions. The latter pulls forward a large part of future returns.

If discrete automation remains weak, the real test will not be whether it can tell a growth story, but whether it can, as it did with Power Grids, Dodge, Accelleron, and Robotics, promptly acknowledge capital misallocation or excessive valuation and execute impairment, divestment, or refocusing cleanly.

The true long-term anchor comes from governance and the major shareholder: the largest shareholder, Investor AB, holds about 14.4% of the voting rights, and Investor AB itself is an industrial holding platform founded by the Wallenberg family and emphasizing long-term engaged ownership.

    Management continuity is also relatively strong. Morten Wierød was promoted from within and has worked at ABB for many years; he became CEO on August 1, 2024, after previously leading Electrification and becoming familiar with ABB’s decentralized operating model. ABB Way, promoted by former CEO Björn Rosengren, has been the institutional foundation for margin improvement, portfolio optimization, and ROCE improvement over the past few years. Chairman Peter Voser is also not an external financial chairman parachuted in; he served as ABB CFO from 2002–2004 and has been chairman since 2015, and experienced ABB’s earlier balance-sheet stress period, so his governance style clearly leans toward risk control and capital discipline.

    Is ABB willing to sacrifice current profit for five to ten years from now? The answer leans toward “yes,” but the method is not burning money for growth. It cuts businesses that are insufficiently focused or have lower returns, and concentrates capital in the high-ROCE electrification and automation core. Evidence includes: FY2025 ROCE of 25.3%, net debt of about $1.683B, and net debt/EBITDA of about 0.25x; fiscal 2025 dividend of CHF 0.94, with a policy of paying a rising, sustainable dividend per share over time; and in February 2026 it launched a buyback of up to $2B for capital reduction. The more telling example is the robotics business: ABB gave up a growth option with a “physical AI” narrative and chose to sell it to SoftBank for $5.375B of enterprise value, with closing expected between mid-2026 and year-end, while use of proceeds remains subject to capital allocation principles rather than already specified. This shows that ABB’s long-termism is more like “portfolio discipline of a high-quality industrial holding company,” not an all-in founder-vision bet.

    Conclusion first: if ABB disappeared tomorrow, customers would face serious inconvenience, projects would be delayed, and maintenance would become more expensive, but most customers would not be “out of options.” It is embedded in critical power supply, distribution, automation control, motor, and drive systems. In scenarios such as data center power, grid upgrades, and industrial energy-efficiency retrofits, customers care especially about reliability, certification, delivery networks, and continuity of installed base; FY2025 Electrification revenue was $17.357B, about 52% of the group, with an Operational EBITA margin of 23.5%, and the group had ROCE of 25.3% and FCF of $4.566B, showing that this is not a dispensable equipment supplier. In 2026Q1, orders rose again to $11.298B, comparable +24%, with book-to-bill of 1.29, and Electrification orders were comparable +44%, further proving that customers are indeed lining up faster now.

    But “important” does not mean “the only one.” ABB’s moat is more like “wide and dispersed”: global installed base, certifications, service network, engineering experience, and switching costs from downtime, rather than an irreplaceable closed platform. If large customers must replace it, they can still turn to Schneider, Eaton, Siemens, Emerson, Rockwell, as well as Chinese local electrical/automation suppliers; the cost is recertification, project delays, and higher spare-parts and O&M switching risk. So the answer to Q7 is: customers would miss ABB, especially in critical power and control links; but they would treat it as a first-tier preferred supplier, not the only lifeline.

    Sustainability is generally positive. ABB serves electrification, energy efficiency, data center power supply, grid upgrades, and industrial automation, and Motion’s motors/drives directly serve industrial energy savings; in China, ABB also positions itself as a technology supplier that helps partners improve efficiency and support the energy transition and industrial upgrading, and it discloses China revenue of about $4.3B, with about 85% coming from locally manufactured products/solutions/services. This type of growth does not monetize harm to society; its long-term direction aligns with energy savings, electrification, and grid resilience.

    The deductions are in regulatory and execution risk, not product direction. ABB is the first company to resolve U.S. FCPA enforcement actions three times. In the 2022 South Africa Kusile case, the SEC said ABB agreed to pay a $75M civil penalty, and the related globally coordinated settlement involved the U.S. DOJ, South Africa, Switzerland, and others; the positive side is that in 2025, because of its performance and compliance remediation, the DOJ sought early dismissal. In addition, although demand from data centers and grids is strong, it is affected by power access, permitting, environmental approvals, local grid investment cadence, and hyperscaler capex at elevated levels; the China market also faces local competition and geopolitical constraints. Overall, ABB’s growth model is socially acceptable, and regulatory tailwinds outweigh headwinds, but its compliance history and project-type regulatory frictions prevent it from receiving a full score.

    Conclusion: ABB’s unit economics are very good and generally improve as scale grows, but they are not flawless “software-like increasing returns.” In FY2025, the company delivered revenue of $33.220 billion, gross margin of 41.1%, operating EBITA of $6.314 billion, operating EBITA margin of 19.0%, operating cash flow of $5.469 billion, and free cash flow of $4.566 billion, while ROCE reached 25.3%. This shows that it is not a low-margin equipment manufacturer, but an industrial hardware company that has become a high-cash-return asset through brand, channels, installed base, service, and portfolio management.

    Scale effects mainly come from electrification and motion control: FY2025 Electrification revenue was $17.357 billion, with an operating EBITA margin of 23.5%; Motion revenue was $8.247 billion, with a margin of 19.4%; Automation revenue was $8.084 billion, with a margin of 14.0% (all from ABB Q4 2025 financial materials). In other words, the more ABB concentrates in electrification, service, standardized products, and high-value-added control systems, the more scale can spread SG&A/R&D and strengthen procurement and pricing power; but Automation remains more project-based and one margin tier lower, so short-cycle orders and large-project timing can make incremental margins volatile.

    The necessary deduction is that recent margins contain one-off benefits. In 2026Q1, operating EBITA margin rose to 23.5%, but management disclosed that of the 320bp year-over-year margin improvement, about 250bp came from real estate disposals, including a $377 million gain on real estate sales; gross margin in the same quarter also fell 2.9 percentage points year over year to 39.4%. So operating improvement can be acknowledged, but 23.5% should not be treated as a normal annualizable margin.

    The money earned mainly goes in three directions: first, reinvestment in electrification, automation, R&D, service networks, and local-for-local capacity, such as management’s 2026Q1 comment that ABB would invest about $75 million in India to expand manufacturing and R&D capability; second, disciplined M&A to strengthen the portfolio; third, shareholder returns, including a 2025 dividend of CHF 0.94 per share, consistent with the policy of increasing sustainable dividends year by year, and a share buyback program of up to $2 billion. If the robotics sale closes, it will also bring in about $5.3 billion of net cash proceeds, further strengthening capacity for returns or reallocation; but that also means the company is voluntarily selling part of its growth optionality.

Compared with ABB’s official FY2025 net income of $4.734B, EPS of $2.59, and FCF of $4.566B, this means ten-year profit would have to grow 6.7–8 times, requiring a net income CAGR of roughly 21–23%.

    These conditions are not completely impossible, but they are demanding if they must all hold at the same time: data center, grid, and electrification capex would need to sustain a decade-long supercycle; ABB’s operating margins and ROCE cannot be compressed back toward normal by competition, cycles, or portfolio changes; capital allocation after the robotics divestiture must remain consistently efficient; and valuation cannot compress meaningfully from a high level. The problem is that the current price is already not cheap: ABBN.SW closed at CHF 83.10, with PE-TTM of about 38.9x, EV/EBITDA of about 26.1x, FCF yield of about 2.6%, and dividend yield of about 1.1%. That is not the starting point of an “undervalued growth stock,” but a market that has already given a high-quality industrial leader a thick growth premium.

    So today’s share price embeds an optimistic script: data center/electrification demand continues to exceed expectations, ABB’s margins stay structurally high for a long period, cash flow remains strong, and the valuation center over the next ten years can remain at 25–30x or even higher. In the report’s three valuation scenarios, bear is CHF 52–62, base is CHF 66–76, and bull is CHF 80–93; the current CHF 83 is already in the optimistic scenario range. That also explains why some brokers have downgraded the rating because of valuation pressure; Kepler Cheuvreux’s downgrade logic is also “good quality, but valuation is not cheap”. Under the Baillie Gifford framework, ABB is a good business, but the current price struggles to support asymmetric upside of “fivefold in ten years.”

    The real disagreement is: can orders and margins continue to convert into results strong enough to support a high multiple? FY2025 ABB delivered revenue of $33.22B, operating EBITA margin of 19.0%, ROCE of 25.3%, and free cash flow of $4.566B; Q1 2026 then delivered strong data with comparable orders +24%, book-to-bill of 1.29, and operating EBITA margin of 23.5%. But Q1 margin included a $377M real estate gain, and gross margin fell 2.9pct year over year, which means the market will later distinguish more strictly between “real operating improvement” and “one-off uplift.”

    Positive narrative inflection points would come from several directions: Electrification and data center orders continuing to beat expectations for several consecutive quarters, with book-to-bill staying clearly above 1; ABB’s role in medium-voltage/DC distribution for data centers being further confirmed, especially progress in 800VDC architecture for AI infrastructure; capital released after closing the robotics transaction being clearly used for buybacks, a special dividend, or high-ROCE M&A; and operating EBITA margin truly approaching the upper end of management’s target range through structural improvement rather than one-off gains.

    Negative narrative inflection points are also clear: data center capex peaks, or ABB’s order book-to-bill falls below 1; margins excluding one-off items stop expanding; a stronger dollar creates translation headwinds in reported figures; a high PE is compressed by rates or factor rotation; and goodwill impairment appears after the portfolio optimization phase. Under the Baillie Gifford framework, ABB’s “market misunderstanding” is not that the market looks down on it, but that the market may have priced a period of strong cycle, strong orders, and strong re-rating in advance as a longer-lasting compounding story.
