The company has rare technical barriers in the extremely narrow yet critical field of EUV mask inspection, and its financial quality is also very strong, with almost no balance-sheet leverage pressure; however, the current valuation already prices in many years of high growth and sustained high margins, while FY2025 orders and remaining performance obligations have already fallen meaningfully and FY2026 profit guidance is below the actual FY2025 level. For a balanced and moderately conservative long-term investor, the margin of safety is not friendly.

From the perspective of a long-term business owner, I am willing to study and keep tracking this company, but I would not immediately act at the current price level as if acquiring the whole business. If the stock market were closed for 5 years, I would still be interested in the business itself; but if I had to write a check today to buy the entire company, I would care more about this: whether you are buying a good company and whether the price you pay for it is too high are two different questions.

Business and Industry

At the same time, however, FY2025 orders received were only 105,226 million yen, down 61.4% year over year, and period-end order backlog fell 31.6% year over year. In other words, short-term visibility is not absent, but order normalization after the peak has already happened. More importantly, the company said in 2024 that it would no longer disclose quarterly orders, citing short-term volatility and a desire to reduce share-price volatility. ASML raised its full-year sales outlook in 2026 to €36 billion to €40 billion and clearly stated that EUV revenue would rise significantly as advanced nodes ramp. All of this indicates that advanced processes, EUV, and AI-related supply chains have not ended; they are moving deeper.

But industry attractiveness cannot be judged only by growth. Cyclicality and disruption risk also matter. Moat and Management

Lasertec's core moat is not brand or distribution. It is "customer-validated technical barriers + extremely hard-to-replicate applied-optics know-how + installed-base service capability + qualification barriers formed through co-evolution with advanced customers." The company's history shows that in 1976 it developed the world's first automatic defect inspection system for LSI photomasks; in 2017 it developed the world's first EUV mask blank defect inspection/review system using 13.5nm EUV light. The company's English materials further state that it launched the world's first actinic EUV patterned mask inspection system, ACTIS A150. Reuters' definition is even more direct: Lasertec is the only company in the world that makes semiconductor inspection equipment using EUV mask lithography technology. On compensation, director bonuses are linked to performance, mainly referring to current-period net profit; the company also uses restricted stock and RSU/RS as long-term incentives, with stock compensation capped at 30,000 shares per year and 300 million yen in amount, which is not excessive in terms of absolute dilution.

But I would keep two reservations. First, the current CEO's direct shareholding is not high. As of the disclosure date in September 2025, President Tetsuya Sendoda held 9,982 shares, while the chairman and vice chairman each held 83,530 shares. This certainly does not mean they are unreliable, but it means the company is closer to a "professional-manager governance + stock incentive" model than a strong owner-operator model. Over a five-year view, this company's growth has been remarkable: from FY2021 to FY2025, revenue grew from 70,248 to 251,477 million yen, and net income attributable to owners of parent grew from 19,250 to 84,652 million yen. Calculated from the beginning to the end of these five fiscal years, revenue CAGR was about 37.6%, and net income CAGR was about 44.8%. But I need to emphasize two points: first, this growth rate clearly benefited from the phase-driven boom in advanced processes, EUV, and AI/HBM capital expenditure; second, FY2026 has not continued FY2025's superlinear acceleration. In the first three quarters of FY2026, revenue grew only 0.4% year over year, while operating profit fell 1.4% year over year. From the perspective of "permanent capital loss," this is not a stock that is likely to get into trouble because of leverage.

What needs watching is not debt, but working capital and customer timing. In FY2025, the company's raw materials and supplies increased by 9,019 million yen year over year, while advances received decreased by 10,037 million yen and accounts payable decreased by 1,908 million yen. By the end of March 2026, advances received had fallen further to 50,626 million yen, down another 13,762 million yen from the end of June 2025. This shows that although the business is light in capital expenditure, growth is not completely "free of funding needs": changes in inventory, work in process, and customer prepayments can still significantly affect the cadence of free cash flow.

As for accounting quality, I currently do not see red flags at the audit-opinion level. The audit opinion in the 2025 securities report was standard unqualified, but the auditor listed estimation of the standalone selling price of assurance services in revenue recognition as a key audit matter. This is very important: in a high-ASP equipment business, revenue recognition, warranty-service allocation, and customer acceptance timing can all affect the speed at which current-period profits are recognized. Combined with the company's own disclosure of risk around changes in the timing of revenue recognition upon acceptance, my judgment is: there is currently no direct evidence of fraud, but the accounting volatility points are real, and receivables, contract assets, advances received, and assurance-related accounting treatment need continued monitoring.

Owner Earnings and Intrinsic Value

I will not use a fancy model here. I will directly use a more conservative approximation that better fits long-term owner thinking to estimate Owner Earnings:

Owner Earnings ≈ operating cash flow − maintenance capital expenditure

The reason I do not use the full expression of "net income + depreciation and amortization − maintenance CAPEX − increase in working capital" is that, in the currently verifiable materials, operating cash flow and capital expenditure are the most direct cash metrics and the least easily distorted by definition. According to the company's FY2025 disclosure, operating cash flow was 77,874 million yen, and purchases of property, plant, and equipment were about 2,113 million yen. Considering that maintenance CAPEX should not be much higher than total CAPEX, I conservatively assign a 3,000 million to 8,000 million yen range, which puts FY2025 conservative Owner Earnings at roughly 70,000 million to 75,000 million yen; using the direct CFO−CAPEX approximation gives about 75,761 million yen.

These numbers have two implications. First, the company's real distributable cash flow is broadly close to net income, but slightly lower than net income, showing that most FY2025 profit was "real cash," though part was absorbed by working capital. Second, the most attractive part of this company is not EPS, but high cash conversion combined with extremely low capital intensity. The problem is that the market has clearly seen this too. Compared with a market capitalization of about ¥3.94 trillion to ¥4.05 trillion, the above ¥70 billion to ¥75 billion in conservative Owner Earnings means the market is effectively paying about 53x to 57x Owner Earnings. From the perspective of acquiring a business for the long term, this is not "cheap." It is a price that requires very strong growth for a very long time to make sense.

I cross-check intrinsic value using three methods.

The first is the Owner Earnings discounted cash flow method. To avoid using FY2025 peak profit as an optimistic starting point, I place normalized Owner Earnings at 68 billion to 72 billion yen and apply three completely different growth/discount assumptions. The table below shows my estimates; it is an inference based on the company's disclosed cash flow, approximate current net cash level, and ending net share count, not company guidance.

This result is very telling: the current share price of about ¥42,900 is already near the upper end of my optimistic scenario. If you are a balanced and moderately conservative investor, this means you are starting from a position where "the market is already fully optimistic for me." My combined conclusion is:

  • **Conservative intrinsic value range: **¥14,000–18,000

  • **Reasonable intrinsic value range: **¥22,000–30,000

  • **Optimistic intrinsic value range: **¥33,000–44,000

Relative to these ranges, the current price carries about a 43%–95% premium to the reasonable intrinsic value range; only under the optimistic range is it close to "barely reasonable." This is why I say the current price has no margin of safety.

The second method is relative valuation. Lasertec's current valuation sits roughly in the high end of global top-tier semiconductor equipment stocks: under Reuters/Yahoo metrics, it trades at about 42.4x TTM adjusted PE, about 53.5x forward PE based on company guidance, about 15.6x P/S, about 42.1x P/CF, and about 16.6x–17.1x P/B. At the same time, SCREEN traded at about 27.2x TTM PE and about 5.1x PBR; Advantest at about 53.8x TTM PE; KLA at about 57.9x adjusted PE; and ASML at about 57.4x PE. This shows that Lasertec is not the most expensive semiconductor equipment stock in the market, but it is certainly not cheap; its valuation is already in the high-premium band of global quality semiconductor equipment core assets. The issue is that ASML and KLA are larger, more diversified, and more platform-like, while Lasertec is narrower, more concentrated, and more dependent on a small number of customers and one technology direction. So "peers are all expensive" does not automatically imply "Lasertec is cheap."

The third method is asset/liquidation value. By the end of March 2026, the company had total assets of 310,812 million yen, net assets of 225,489 million yen, cash of 80,027 million yen, and essentially no net debt. The book profile looks healthy, but compared with a market capitalization of nearly 4 trillion yen, the asset method provides almost no support for the current share price. Even if cash, receivables, and land are assigned relatively high values and inventory is discounted materially, liquidation value remains an order of magnitude below market capitalization. In other words, the investment case for this stock is built almost entirely on sustained high-quality growth in future cash flow, not on an asset safety cushion.

Based on the three methods above, my price framework is:

  • **Ideal buy price range: **¥16,000–22,000

  • **Acceptable hold price range: **¥22,000–35,000

  • **Clearly overvalued price range: **above ¥38,000

This does not mean the stock must fall above ¥38,000. It means that from a long-term capital-allocation perspective, new money invested in this range is unlikely to enjoy a margin of safety that would satisfy a conservative investor.

Risks and the Bear Case

If I were writing the "bear memo" for this investment, the strongest bearish argument would not be "the company is bad." It would be exactly the opposite: the company is so good that the price has been lifted to a level where it must keep proving that it is extremely good. The real risk in this type of stock is often not an earnings collapse, but "growth comes in slightly below divine expectations + valuation reverts to normal."

The most important operating risk is, first, customer concentration risk. In FY2025, Intel, TSMC, and Samsung together accounted for about 79.4% of revenue; if any one of them cuts capital expenditure on advanced masks and related inspection, even if it only affects several high-ASP projects, the impact on a single year's results could be significant. Second is technology/competition risk. Although Reuters calls Lasertec the world's only EUV mask lithography inspection maker, the company itself also acknowledges that if R&D fails to meet customers' technology roadmaps, or if competitors move first with superior products, the company's competitiveness could be impaired. Third is cycle risk and acceptance-timing risk. The company disclosed a 61.4% year-over-year decline in orders received and a 31.6% year-over-year decline in order backlog in FY2025; the FY2026 guidance raise was partly due to "customer acceptance earlier than expected" and exchange-rate changes. All of this shows that quarterly and annual results are not fully equivalent to real long-term demand.

Other important risks should not be ignored. In its annual report, the company clearly mentions that acquisition of key talent, quality, introduction of new technologies, intellectual-property disputes, supply of special light sources and optical components, overseas regulatory/political environments, exchange rates, disasters, and information security can all affect performance. Supply chain risk is especially relevant, as management itself acknowledges that some light sources and optical components are not easy to substitute; for a system supplier highly dependent on precision optics, this is a very real risk.

At the accounting level, the stronger bear argument is not "fraud," but that recognition and allocation of revenue in high-ASP project-based sales are naturally complex. The auditor listed estimation of standalone selling prices related to warranty services as a key audit matter; the company also explicitly warned that changes in the timing of revenue recognition upon acceptance can significantly affect a single year's results. This means that even without bad intent, the "smoothness" and "predictability" of profits will be lower than in daily consumer goods or subscription software businesses. For long-term investors who prefer high certainty, this is a characteristic that deserves a discount, not a premium.

What facts would overturn the investment judgment? I think there are mainly five categories. First, the uniqueness of EUV mask inspection is broken, for example if KLA or another player gains equivalent customer validation in key areas. Second, one or two of the top three customers materially shift their spending direction, causing Lasertec to stop being a core beneficiary of advanced-node capacity expansion. Third, service revenue growth slows meaningfully while equipment revenue cannot recover, indicating that installed-base value is no longer expanding. Fourth, operating margin falls below 35%–40% for a prolonged period, suggesting that high margins were more cyclical windfall than structural advantage. Fifth, audit matters expand, revenue-recognition disputes rise, or capital allocation shifts toward high-priced acquisitions and excessive equity incentives. If these occur, I would move from "waiting for a better price" to "re-examining the business quality itself."

I would define the largest permanent-capital-loss scenario as follows: AI/HBM capital expenditure cools cyclically, orders and backlog keep moving down, profit returns to the 50 billion to 60 billion yen range, and the market valuation multiple falls from above 50x to 25x–35x. In that case, a share price of ¥15,000–25,000 is not unimaginable, implying a potential loss of 40%–65% for new buyers at the current price. This is not a prediction. It is a stress-test inference based on current valuation and cyclical risk.

Checklist and Final Judgment

The checklist below reflects my long-term investment judgment based on the evidence above. It is not a mechanical exercise. It pioneered and monopolized the new niche of actinic EUV mask inspection, but the track itself is extremely narrow and has a limited absolute ceiling. Its real value is not the size of its own track, but the fact that it is tightly bound to the longest and most certain slope in the entire industry: AI and advanced process nodes.

    Start with the "new market" it created. Lasertec was not taking share from an existing large market. It defined a category by itself: the world's first LSI photomask inspection system in 1976, the world's first 13.5nm EUV mask blank inspection system in 2017, and then the world's first actinic patterned mask inspection system, ACTIS/MATRICS A150, using the same-source 13.5nm vacuum ultraviolet light as exposure. Multiple sources confirm it is the only company globally that commercially supplies actinic EUV mask inspection, with a single-unit ASP above $75M, making it an unavoidable step for any fab mass-producing at 5nm and below. This is exactly what the report calls "a near-monopoly technical position in the most critical, most difficult, and narrowest link".

    Now look at the absolute size of the ceiling. This is the tension that must be stated honestly. The entire photomask inspection equipment market was only about $1 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach only about $1.6 billion by 2030. Even the EUV mask inspection subsegment alone grows only from about $1.2 billion in 2024 to about $3.5 billion in 2033. In other words, Lasertec's FY2025 revenue of ¥251,477M, or about $1.7 billion, already exceeds the TAM of the entire mask inspection equipment market. It is not "expanding an existing pie"; this small pie is roughly equal to Lasertec itself. It narrowed visibility exactly when order intake was down 61.4% year over year and the business inflection point most needed outside tracking. Logically, that is close to avoiding bad news. The market did not accept it either: Bernstein warned that this move "could damage investor confidence", and the stock fell nearly 50% that year. The offset is that its annual-report risk disclosures are sufficient, covering semiconductor cyclicality, R&D failure, key talent, supply chain, FX, and other risks, so it is not a full whitewash. In the FY2026 interim period, operating margin remained around 49%, and actual ROE was 46.88%. This is not an accounting illusion; it is the result of high technical barriers, high ASP, and pricing power.

    Incremental returns improve or stay high as scale increases. The company uses a fab-lite model, with outsourced production and extremely low capex. FY2025 purchases of tangible fixed assets were only about ¥2,113M, while operating cash flow was ¥77,874M, approximately equal to net income attributable to owners of parent, showing excellent cash conversion. ROE has long stayed at 40–50%, with FY2021–2025 at 40.8/38.9/50.8/45.4/46.9%. Low capex intensity plus high ASP means each incremental yen of revenue requires almost no matching heavy assets, so margins structurally remain high. The medium-term plan targets FY2030 revenue of ¥400–500B and an operating margin still ≥35%, meaning it expects to hold high margins even after volume increases.

    Where the money goes. R&D expense was ¥11,677M in FY2025, the growth engine. The company maintains a 35% payout ratio, with estimated DPS of ¥329, completed a ¥12.0 billion buyback in 2025, ended the period with cash of ¥80,027M, almost no interest-bearing debt, and an equity ratio of 72.5%. Capital allocation is rational, with no leverage risk.

    Honest footnote, the only blemish. Working capital, including inventory, work in process, and advances received, plus customer acceptance timing, can disturb the rhythm of free cash flow: FY2025 raw materials increased by ¥9,019M, advances received fell by ¥10,037M, and by 2026/3 advances received had declined further to ¥50,626M. But this affects cash-flow timing, not the nature of the unit economics. Overall: unit economics deserve a strong rating, without changing the overall view: ~53× forward PE already fully prices this excellence.

    Bottom line: a fivefold rise in ten years from the current ~¥42,800 is very unrealistic. It forcibly binds together two conflicting conditions: "earnings rising about 9–10 times" and "valuation multiples barely compressing". Against a backdrop of strong cyclicality, 79.4% customer concentration, and a FY2026 guidance cut, the probability is very low.

    Start with the math. Rising fivefold from ¥42,800 means ¥214,000. The annualized price growth is 5^(1/10) − 1 ≈ 17.5%/year, without interruption for ten years. Price = earnings × valuation multiple, so there are two legs to separate. On the company's guidance basis, current forward PER is about 53.5×; Yahoo Finance Japan shows forward EPS of ~¥842 on a comparable basis, and the current price implies a forward PER of ~51×, consistent with the report. It is extremely difficult for semiconductor equipment stocks to sustain a premium multiple for long. If forward PER falls from ~53× to ~25–30× over ten years, taking the midpoint of ~27.5×, almost a halving, the multiple's contribution to the share price is only 27.5/53 ≈ 0.52×. Earnings would then need to grow 5 ÷ 0.52 ≈ 9.6 times to support a 5× share price. Spreading 9.6 times over ten years equals 9.6^(1/10) − 1 ≈ 25% earnings CAGR with no stalls, corresponding to net income moving from FY2026 guidance of ¥72B → ~¥690B.

    Is this realistic? The report has already answered for you. Its three-method valuation gives a reasonable intrinsic value range of ¥22,000–30,000 and an optimistic upper range of ¥33,000–44,000, while the current ¥42,900 is already near the top of the optimistic scenario. Its DCF estimates that the current price implies only a neutral ten-year annualized return of 4–6%, and even the optimistic case only 10–12%. That means the market has already priced in fairly optimistic high-single-digit long-term growth on your behalf, leaving expected returns far below 17.5%. To achieve a 25% earnings CAGR for ten years, the superlinear EUV/AI capex explosion seen in FY2025 would have to repeat for ten consecutive years. Reality is that FY2026 revenue guidance of ¥220,000M and net income guidance of ¥72,000M are below FY2025, order intake was down -61.4% year over year, backlog was down -31.6%, customer concentration is 79.4%, and Japan's 10-year government bond yield of ~2.64% raises the risk-free hurdle. Paying ~53–57× Owner Earnings, with OE of ~¥70.0–75.0 billion, is itself a case of "good business, bad price".

    Today's share price implies high-single-digit long-term growth plus continued maintenance of the current premium multiple. That is already an optimistic script. Moving beyond that to a fivefold outcome requires "earnings up 9–10 times + no multiple compression", and the probability that these two both hold is overwhelmingly lower. The fivefold narrative does not work; the price needs to offer a margin of safety again.

"Not understanding it / looking down on it / not seeing far enough" are all weak explanations. It is seen very clearly and awarded a high premium. The report's core conclusion is exactly "good company, bad price", with the current price implying only a neutral ten-year annualized return of 4–6% and a rating of "Watch".

    Why none of the three explanations holds: this is not an obscure stock, but a popular name with ample coverage and repeated pricing. Sell-side coverage is dense: MarketScreener and Investing.com show 13–15 analysts following it, with consensus at "Hold/Neutral" and a target-price range of about ¥30,500–40,200, already close to or even below the current price. This means people who "understand it" have long since priced in the monopoly position. "Looking down on it" also does not hold: its 100% EUV mask inspection share and near-monopoly actinic inspection position are widely repeated, including by Shared Research. "Not seeing far enough" is equally hard to defend: it is a famous high-volatility, high-multiple stock, its peak valuation exceeded 60× in 2024, and it has long been a well-known short target, including by GlobalTechResearch. Bull-bear disagreement is huge, with the most optimistic target around ¥55,000 and the most pessimistic around ¥13,275. The disagreement itself proves that the long-term narrative has already been debated repeatedly.

    Narrative inflection points, in both directions: upside would require High-NA EUV volume ramp, renewed acceleration in orders, and lower customer concentration, with Intel/TSMC/Samsung accounting for 79.4% of revenue. Only these can lift it to another level. Downside would come from cooling AI/advanced-node capex, continued correction in orders and backlog, with the report recording order intake down -61.4% year over year, operating margin falling below 35–40%, and valuation multiples reverting from 50× to 25–35×. For buyers at the current price, downward valuation mean reversion is the more realistic risk: the report's stress test points to potential downside of 40%–65%. In other words, this is not an "undiscovered diamond", but a high-quality asset that is already fully priced.
