Cash and cash equivalents stood at CNY 795.9 million at 2025 year-end with no meaningful bank debt, so the balance sheet is not the immediate worry.

Valuation is. At CNY 1,445, the stock implies a market cap near CNY 180 billion against 2025 revenue of just CNY 601 million. The report's own three-year scenario work puts fair value at about CNY 425 a share conservative, CNY 740 base, and CNY 1,180 even in the optimistic case, meaning today's price sits above all three. Its ideal buy zone is CNY 260 to 340, roughly a fifth of the current quote.

The report's main risks, in order: customer concentration reversing (below 40% would be healthy), the undisclosed phase-two capacity failing to convert spending into output, the non-recurring profit component being annualized by mistake, and overseas-sourced equipment exposure to trade friction. Reading Yuanjie as an optical-module company leads to the wrong conclusion. It is a much narrower business: an upstream optical-laser-chip supplier, built around an IDM model that spans chip design, epitaxy, wafer processing, chip processing, testing, and some packaging. That matters because the company sits at the part of the stack where performance, yield, and qualification cycles determine whether a customer can ship at all. In 2025, that machine earned most of its money from two product buckets: legacy and still-meaningful telecom chips, and a much faster-growing data-center bucket led by silicon-photonics continuous-wave light sources. The center of gravity changed abruptly. In 2024, telecom still accounted for about 81 percent of product revenue and data-center plus other products about 19 percent; in 2025, telecom fell to about 34 percent while data-center products rose to roughly 65 percent. That mix shift, more than any accounting trick, explains why revenue jumped to CNY 601.4 million in 2025 from CNY 252.2 million in 2024, and why gross margin recovered to 58.15 percent from 33.53 percent.

The market is trading a much simpler story than the business actually deserves: “China AI optics scarcity.” Yuanjie’s CW 70mW and 100mW products both reached batch delivery in 2025, and management explicitly tied the growth to AI-driven high-speed module upgrades and higher data-center mix. The 2026 first-half pre-announcement then poured fuel on that narrative: revenue was guided to CNY 900 million to CNY 950 million, up 339 percent to 364 percent year on year, while attributable net profit was guided to CNY 600 million to CNY 650 million, up about 1,197 percent to 1,305 percent. Those are extraordinary numbers for a company that only posted CNY 601 million of revenue for all of 2025. The market heard one message: a domestic silicon-photonics laser bottleneck is being monetized in real time.

That simple story helps explain the share-price history. The stock traded as a niche, technically credible but not especially loved STAR-board chip name through much of 2023 and 2024. Then the perception flipped. By 2024 year-end the company had already used its annual report to show successful expansion of CW silicon-photonics products. In 2025 it reported mass production of 70mW CW products, batch delivery of 100mW, customer validation progress on 100G PAM4 EML, and early work on 200G PAM4 EML and higher-power 300mW CW sources for CPO and related architectures. As those disclosures met a market starved for true AI-optics upstream beneficiaries, the stock ran from a reported all-time low of CNY 54.00 on 2024-09-09 to an all-time high of CNY 1,968.14 on 2026-06-23, before pulling back to around CNY 1,420 intraday on 2026-07-24, with the prior close at CNY 1,445 on 2026-07-23. Daily Economic News described the move to CNY 900.50 by 2026-03-11 as nearly a tenfold rise in less than a year, and the stock kept climbing after that.

Demand is real, and that is not the most important bull-bear disagreement. The downstream evidence is too compelling to deny. Lumentum said in fiscal 2026 that cloud transceivers had moved onto a sustainable upward path, while optical circuit-switch demand had already driven backlog above $400 million; its OFC 2026 deck, citing LightCounting and other industry sources, framed AI-optics revenue as a market growing at about 40 percent CAGR toward 2030. Reuters reported Innolight’s Q1 2026 revenue up 192 percent year on year and noted that the company has led optical-interconnect solutions revenue globally since 2021. Dell’Oro also projected global optical-transport equipment revenue growth of 16 percent in 2026, explicitly linking the strength to AI data centers. The real debate is narrower and harder: how much of Yuanjie’s current growth is durable share gain and how much is acute shortage pricing, temporary customer concentration, or a single procurement cycle at hyperscaler-linked module makers.

The single piece of evidence that most complicates the bull case is customer concentration. Yuanjie’s 2025 annual report says the top five customers contributed 71.80 percent of annual sales, and the largest customer alone contributed 53.35 percent. The company argues this does not amount to “serious dependence” because data-center customers are few, validation cycles are long, and other new customers were added during the year. That explanation is plausible, but it does not change the arithmetic. In 2024, the largest customer was only 16.38 percent of annual sales, so 2025 was a step-change into concentration, not just a high reading. If that leading customer is tied to one large module maker or one hyperscaler build cycle, investors are paying a premium multiple for a business that has not yet proven broad revenue diversity.

The second major question is whether the company can industrialize its promise fast enough. In February 2026, Yuanjie announced a CNY 1.251 billion investment in phase two of its optoelectronic communication chip R&D and production base, funded by self-owned and self-raised funds, with an 18-month construction period. The project is focused on high-speed optical chips in Xixian New Area, with new production lines, plant space, and supporting facilities. What investors do not get is a clean capacity number: the company’s own environmental filing says the post-expansion wafer and chip capacity figures are withheld for commercial confidentiality. That is a serious analytical limitation. It means the market is capitalizing an abstract capacity story rather than a disclosed one.

On fundamentals alone, Yuanjie now sits in a rare but unstable category: a real business with real technological credibility, riding a real structural demand wave, but carrying a valuation that assumes years of nearly flawless execution. The business has several things that deserve respect. It is one of the few domestic optical-chip players with an IDM chain rather than a thin design-only model. It has already commercialized higher-power CW products, not merely sampled them. It has moved from telecom dependence toward data-center relevance with startling speed. It ended 2025 with CNY 795.9 million of cash and cash equivalents and no meaningful interest-bearing borrowings, so it is not funding growth from a distressed balance sheet. It also remains founder-controlled, with the founder-chairman-general manager still the largest shareholder and the control group intact.

But the stock is pre-spending a large part of 2027 and 2028, not merely pricing a good 2026. At the 2026-07-23 close, the implied market cap was about CNY 179.9 billion. Against 2025 revenue of CNY 601.4 million, that is an extreme trailing sales multiple. Even if first-half 2026 guidance is annualized and the company reaches around CNY 1.9 billion of revenue for the full year, the valuation still implies a multiple far above integrated optical-component, communications-semiconductor, or optical-module peers. The business may justify a scarcity premium; the current price implies something closer to a scarcity cult.

The right qualitative portrait is this: a genuine high-growth optical-chip supplier whose stock has become a scarcity-driven re-rating with valuation-bubble traits. The first half of that sentence is supported by product, margin, and revenue-mix evidence. The second half is supported by the market cap relative to disclosed revenue, the 2025 jump in top-customer concentration, the undisclosed exact capacity uplift in phase two, and the fact that part of the 2026 first-half profit surge comes from non-recurring fair-value gains in a private-fund investment. When a stock needs all three of these to hold at once (continued AI optics shortage, sustained customer concentration without disruption, and smooth capacity build-out) to justify its price, the burden of proof shifts from the bears to the bulls.

Vertical history

Origins and listing path

Yuanjie was founded in Shaanxi in January 2013 as a limited company. The founding shareholding was simple on paper: Zhang Xinying held 60 percent and Jiang Xi held 40 percent. But the prospectus makes clear that part of that structure was nominee ownership. Before listing, those nominee arrangements were unwound. The more important point is strategic, not legal: the company emerged from a technologist-led startup background rather than from a state carve-out or a financial sponsor incubation. Its controlling founder, Zhang Xingang, is a Tsinghua graduate with a doctorate in materials science from the University of Southern California, and he previously worked in R&D at Luminent and then as R&D director at Source Photonics. That background explains why Yuanjie was built not as a system vendor but as a process-and-device company focused on the hard part of the optical stack: laser-chip design and manufacturing.

The company’s founding problem was straightforward. China had meaningful demand for telecom and access-network optical chips, but higher-performance domestic laser-chip supply was still thin, especially in products where yield, reliability, and high-temperature performance determined whether a downstream module maker could qualify for carrier-grade or later data-center workloads. Yuanjie’s early response was to emphasize an IDM model. The prospectus and later annual reports repeatedly present that as a defining trait: the company owns process control from MOCVD epitaxy through grating, waveguide, metallization, coating, test, high-frequency test, and reliability verification. In a business where customer validation cycles are long and reliability failures are fatal, that is the operating model, not branding.

The company converted into a joint-stock entity in December 2020 and listed on the Shanghai STAR Market on 2022-12-21. Yuanjie’s Hong Kong draft filing states that it issued 15.0 million A-shares in the STAR listing, representing 25 percent of post-listing share capital. That matters because the listing was a meaningful financing event for a company moving from product validation into scaled industrialization, not a tiny float on a giant pre-existing equity base. The accessible filing text in this research session confirms the listing date and share count, but not the IPO issue price, so the share-count side of the IPO terms is verified more cleanly than the per-share pricing detail.

The story the market bought at IPO was not “AI”; that came later. The initial story was domestic optical-chip substitution with credible process depth. The prospectus described a product arc that started with 2.5G and 10G DFB chips, expanded into 25G products for 5G fronthaul and next-generation access, and aimed at higher-speed EML and high-power CW opportunities. Even in the prospectus, Yuanjie stressed that comparable listed peers were scarce and that its nearest references were an uneasy mix of MACOM, Taiwanese III-V wafer suppliers, and domestic companies with adjacent but not identical product structures. That scarcity argument eventually became part of the business story. Later, it became part of the stock multiple.

Development stages

The first stage ran from founding through roughly 2018. This was the product-validation period. Yuanjie launched 2.5G 1490nm and 1550nm DFB products in 2014, reached one million cumulative DFB-chip shipments by 2015, and launched its first 10G DFB chip in 2016. By 2018, cumulative DFB-chip sales had passed ten million units. The point of this stage was proving that the company could make reliable carrier-grade devices, build process know-how, and survive the brutal qualification cycle that keeps most startups trapped in sample mode, not scale in the modern sense.

The second stage ran from 2019 through 2021 and was defined by 5G and higher-speed telecom demand. Yuanjie launched 25G DFB CWDM and LWDM products in 2019 and completed industrial trial production for ultra-high-speed chips aimed at 5G communication. In 2020 it also launched high-power CW chips for silicon-photonics applications. By 2021 it had developed EML chips, solving part of the longer-distance communication problem. This was the period when the company’s IDM setup mattered most: it allowed speed of iteration and process tuning while domestic 25G-capable suppliers remained relatively few. Financially, 2020 and 2021 were outstanding years, with revenue around CNY 233 million in both years and net profit rising from about CNY 78.8 million in 2020 to CNY 95.3 million in 2021. Operating cash flow was excellent in 2020 and still positive in 2021, but already more volatile than earnings.

The third stage, from late 2022 through 2024, was the digestion and transition phase. The company reached the public market in December 2022, then encountered a much less friendly mix environment. The 2024 annual report says telecom-market revenue was still dominated by 2.5G and 10G products, while competition intensified and pricing fell. Revenue recovered from 2023’s depressed level to CNY 252.2 million in 2024, but product mix remained awkward enough that gross margin dropped to 33.53 percent and the company posted a net loss of CNY 6.13 million. Management kept funding R&D anyway, especially in CW silicon-photonics light sources and EML. That was the decisive strategic choice. Instead of defending old telecom share at lower prices, the company used the downturn to reposition toward a better revenue pool.

The fourth stage began in 2025 and is still unfolding. This is the AI-optics breakout phase. The 2025 annual report says data-center CW products became the new growth engine, with 70mW CW products in mass delivery and 100mW products also reaching batch delivery. Data-center product revenue surged more than sevenfold, product mix flipped decisively toward data center, gross margin recovered above 58 percent, and net profit reached CNY 190.9 million. The company also pushed its technology roadmap outward: 100G PAM4 EML had completed customer validation, 200G PAM4 EML was moving into customer validation, and 300mW-class CW products were under development for more advanced packaging architectures. By March 2026, management had also launched the H-share process to add offshore financing flexibility and a more international capital-markets platform. By February 2026 it had approved a CNY 1.251 billion second-phase expansion project. Operational acceleration and capital-markets acceleration arrived together.

Key nodes, financial review, and price history

Two nodes changed Yuanjie’s fate more than any others. The first was technical rather than financial: the move from a telecom-heavy DFB supplier into high-power CW chips for silicon photonics. The 2024 report said CW products had only just begun to contribute; the 2025 report shows the result. That node was initially underrated. The second was customer concentration emerging alongside that success. It was probably underrated by the market during the share-price ascent because the AI-demand narrative was so compelling. Yet it may prove the more decisive variable over the next two years. In a component shortage, concentration can look like proof of product quality. In a normalized supply environment, it can look like dependence.

The company’s long-run financial history shows a business with authentic technical leverage but uneven cash conversion. In 2019, revenue was CNY 81.3 million with net profit of CNY 13.2 million and operating cash flow of CNY 11.5 million. In 2020, revenue rose to CNY 233.4 million, net profit to CNY 78.8 million, and operating cash flow to CNY 104.8 million. In 2021, revenue stayed near CNY 232.1 million and net profit rose to CNY 95.3 million, but operating cash flow dropped sharply to CNY 36.0 million. By 2024, after the telecom downcycle and investment phase, operating cash flow was positive again at CNY 19.0 million despite a net loss, and in 2025 it jumped to CNY 150.2 million alongside the earnings recovery. That pattern is what one would expect from a capacity-building semiconductor manufacturer rather than from an asset-light designer: earnings can look smooth across product transitions, but cash follows inventories, receivables, and capex with a delay.

The balance sheet has stayed much healthier than the stock multiple. At 2025 year-end, cash and cash equivalents were CNY 795.9 million, and the company had no disclosed short-term or long-term bank borrowings in the annual-report balance sheet extracts used here. Liabilities were concentrated in payables, lease liabilities, accrued items, and deferred income rather than funded debt. The real balance-sheet stress point is working capital and construction spending, not leverage. In 2025, accounts receivable more than doubled, construction in progress rose 258 percent, and other non-current assets rose more than elevenfold, largely because of prepayments for equipment and expansion. That is exactly what investors should expect from a business that is trying to convert an order boom into industrial capacity. It also means accounting profit will likely continue to overstate owner earnings during the build-out phase.

In the capital market, Yuanjie has passed through three valuation identities in a very short time. At first it was a domestic-substitution small-cap chip story. Then it became a cyclical disappointment as lower-speed telecom pricing worsened. Now it is treated as an AI-optics scarcity asset. The move from one identity to the next was not random. The business quality changed in the middle, but market preference changed even faster than the business. That is why the stock’s re-rating has outrun the revenue base so aggressively.

Business model and industry

Revenue structure, costs, moat, and governance

Yuanjie’s product taxonomy looks broad, but the economic engine is concentrated. The 2025 report lists products spanning 2.5G, 10G, 25G, 50G, 100G, and 200G laser chips, CW light sources, and automotive-lidar and sensing applications including 1550nm pulse DFB devices and methane-sensor applications. In practice, 2025 economics came from two segments: telecom products generated CNY 206.5 million of revenue at a 31.17 percent gross margin, and data-center products generated CNY 393.3 million at a 72.21 percent gross margin. Other products were negligible. This split tells the core story. Telecom remained important for installed customer relationships and baseline utilization. Data-center CW products drove the profit pool.

The cost structure is typical for an IDM photonics manufacturer: materials, direct labor, and manufacturing overhead all matter, but much of the real economic burden sits in fixed process capability, engineering talent, reliability infrastructure, and equipment spend. The 2025 cost data show direct materials accounted for about 20.6 percent of total chip cost, direct labor 28.2 percent, and manufacturing overhead 51.2 percent. That is why operating leverage is powerful on the way up. Once a high-margin data-center product fills a qualified line, the incremental gross profit can be dramatic. The same structure also explains the downside. If product mix shifts back toward lower-power or lower-speed telecom chips, or if utilization falls while depreciation keeps rising, margins can compress brutally. Yuanjie’s 2024 gross-margin collapse and 2025 rebound are both manifestations of the same operating model.

The company’s real moat rests on three things. The first is process integration. The prospectus argued that Yuanjie was among the few domestic optical-chip players with a full IDM chain, and later annual reports repeat the point with concrete line items: independent MOCVD epitaxy, grating, waveguide fabrication, metallization, coating, automated test, high-frequency test, and reliability verification. In a market where downstream customers demand long qualification cycles and stable mass supply, this is not decorative vertical integration. It shortens iteration loops and improves reproducibility.

The second moat is qualification inertia. The 2025 annual report states plainly that optical chips require lengthy downstream validation before they can enter a supply chain. That matters more than patent counting. Once a module maker or system OEM has qualified a light source into a high-volume architecture, switching is painful because power, wavelength stability, reliability, packaging behavior, and yield all interact. This barrier is strongest in data-center CW products right now, which helps explain why revenue could concentrate so rapidly once Yuanjie crossed the qualification threshold.

The third moat is that some of Yuanjie’s recent products sit exactly where China’s domestic stack is still thin. The prospectus said 25G-and-above laser chips with performance and reliability up to standard were still relatively scarce domestically and heavily reliant on overseas imports. By 2025, management was discussing high-power CW products already shipping and 100G and 200G PAM4 EML roadmap progress. This is not a permanent moat, because scarcity attracts capital. It is, however, a real moat during the current build-out period.

Governance is a mixed picture rather than a clean positive or negative. Founder control is stable. The 2025 annual report shows ZHANG XINGANG, a U.S. national, remains chairman, general manager, controlling shareholder, and actual controller; the founder group’s concert-party structure was laid out in the prospectus and remains relevant. Delivery against technology roadmaps has been reasonably good on evidence: CW products moved from early commercialization in 2024 to batch shipment in 2025, and the company was willing to keep spending during a bad 2024. The governance discount comes from two other facts. First, founder control is concentrated relative to free float. Second, the company has moved quickly into offshore listing planning and large capex decisions while the stock trades at a highly elevated multiple, which always raises the question of whether management is leaning into market enthusiasm. Still, this is not a case study in accounting distress, debt addiction, or chronic related-party abuse.

Industry structure, cycle, and policy

Yuanjie operates inside a chain where the profit pool is uneven. The broad optical-network and optical-interconnect market is large and growing, but a disproportionate share of current incremental profit sits in the bottleneck components that enable AI-cluster bandwidth upgrades. Lumentum’s OFC 2026 materials, citing LightCounting and industry estimates, describe AI optical TAM growing from about $18 billion to more than $90 billion by 2030 at roughly 40 percent CAGR. Dell’Oro separately forecast 2026 optical-transport equipment growth of 16 percent, again emphasizing AI data centers. Innolight’s own results, as summarized by Reuters, show how extreme downstream demand has become: Q1 2026 revenue was up 192 percent, and the U.S. accounted for 61.7 percent of revenue. That tells you where the urgency now sits in the value chain.

This is not a normal semiconductor cycle. Yuanjie sits at the overlap of four cycles: the semiconductor cycle, the optical-network capex cycle, the data-center architecture cycle, and a domestic-substitution policy cycle. The helpful part is obvious. AI deployment is producing an equipment and interconnect build-out large enough to overwhelm old procurement assumptions. Lumentum’s official disclosures about sustainable cloud-transceiver growth and OCS backlog far above $400 million underline that the downstream pain is real, not speculative. The fragile part is that this kind of demand wave can compress qualification timelines, pull forward orders, and temporarily suppress the usual checks on concentration and pricing. The cycle is real. So is the risk of over-earning within it.

Policy and geopolitics cut both ways. Yuanjie benefits from China’s push for semiconductor and photonics localization and from STAR-board capital-market support for strategic technologies. At the same time, its own 2024 annual report warns that part of its production equipment and raw materials still comes from overseas suppliers and that worsening trade friction could disrupt supply or drive procurement delays. The company says U.S. direct sales are still small, but downstream customers are globally exposed, and the 2026 H-share process itself is part of a globalization strategy designed to widen financing options and perhaps support overseas operations. That can help capital access. It can also expose the company to a sharper geopolitical discount if the optical stack becomes more explicitly strategic.

Horizontal competitor analysis

Yuanjie belongs to a corner of photonics where perfect comparables hardly exist. This is more than an investor’s complaint: the company’s own prospectus said it lacked fully comparable listed peers and therefore had to use a mixed set that included MACOM, Taiwanese III-V wafer suppliers, and domestic adjacent names such as Shijia Photonics and Changguang Huaxin. That remains true today. A pure-play, listed, China-based, IDM laser-chip vendor with meaningful exposure to both telecom DFB/EML and AI-era silicon-photonics CW light sources is rare. There is no perfect twin to hunt for, so the right way to compare Yuanjie is to set it against three different peer types: upstream direct and near-direct laser-chip suppliers, integrated optical-component vendors, and downstream optical-module leaders that reveal where demand is coming from.

Against upstream domestic peers such as Shijia Photonics and Changguang Huaxin, Yuanjie’s distinction is mix and current positioning, not breadth. Shijia has broader passive-chip and cable-material exposure, while Changguang Huaxin’s economic center of gravity is still higher-power semiconductor lasers with optical-communication chips present but not dominant. Yuanjie is narrower but currently better aligned with the most valuable shortage in the market: high-power CW light sources for silicon photonics and higher-speed modulation roadmaps. That narrower focus is the reason its growth is now so much faster. It is also the reason its stock is so much more vulnerable to a single architecture or customer shift.

Against global communications-semiconductor suppliers such as MACOM and integrated photonics vendors such as Lumentum and Coherent, Yuanjie is much smaller, much less diversified, and much more exposed to a handful of product wins. That sounds like a weakness, and in valuation terms it is. In product terms it is partly a strength. A smaller, more concentrated IDM business can push engineering resources into one bottleneck product family faster than a diversified incumbent managing multiple end markets and product portfolios. This is why small specialists often win during the first phase of an architecture transition. The problem comes later. Larger peers have broader customer networks, more system-level knowledge, more stable purchasing power, and deeper balance sheets when the market normalizes or packaging requirements shift again.

Innolight belongs in the comparison even though it sits one step downstream. It is the customer-demand mirror, not a product substitute for Yuanjie. Reuters’ 2026 reporting on Innolight makes that clear: AI, cloud, and U.S. hyperscaler exposure are driving enormous optical-module demand. That helps Yuanjie because it proves the end-market expansion is not a rumor. It also reminds investors where bargaining power may ultimately reside. Globally, high-speed optical interconnects for AI data centers are already a large, well-established category: Lumentum's OFC 2026 materials, citing LightCounting, frame AI-optics demand as compounding at roughly 40 percent CAGR toward 2030 (see LightCounting's April 2026 analysis of how AI is reshaping the optical industry), and Yuanjie is one upstream chip supplier feeding that buildout, not the source of the demand itself.

    Within that pie, the realistic ceiling is narrower than the headline growth suggests. Yuanjie's addressable niche today is high-power CW silicon-photonics light sources and next-generation EML chips — a bottleneck-component category, not a systems or module category — and 2025 revenue of just CNY 601.4 million against a market cap near CNY 179.9 billion shows how much ceiling is already being paid for years in advance. The ceiling is also capped by concentration: 53.35% of 2025 sales came from a single customer, so today's growth mostly proves the size of one qualification win, not a market-wide position. The report itself frames Yuanjie's niche as gaining ground "if silicon-photonics penetration keeps rising and qualification remains sticky" and losing ground "if the market broadens into a routine, multi-sourced part category" — a real but conditional ceiling, not the structurally guaranteed kind a platform or network-effect business would have.

That triple-hat concentration is about as tight an interest-alignment structure as a public company can have.

    One citation needs care. The pre-IPO paper structure showed Zhang Xinying holding 60% and Jiang Xi 40%, but the report is explicit that this included nominee-shareholding arrangements unwound before the December 2022 STAR listing — that split is a historical, pre-listing artifact, not Zhang Xingang's current stake or today's cap table. The report does not disclose an exact current ownership percentage for Zhang Xingang, only that he remains the largest shareholder, and that gap is worth flagging honestly rather than filled with an invented number.

The report itself notes that requiring continued AI-optics shortage, sustained concentration without disruption, and smooth capacity build-out to hold all at once shifts the burden of proof to the bulls.
