According to SEMI, the global semiconductor materials market was $67.5 billion in 2024, up 3.8% year-on-year; according to SIA and WSTS, global semiconductor sales in 2025 were about $791.7 billion, up 25.6% year-on-year, and industry sales in 2026 are expected to approach $975 billion. This shows that downstream demand is not weak over the long term, especially under the pull of AI, advanced memory, and logic chips, where the long-term trend of material demand still points upward.

But there is a very important value-investing distinction here: "semiconductors are a good industry" does not mean "every semiconductor-materials company is a good business". Although the materials industry benefits from industrial upgrading and domestic substitution, it also has clear technology iteration, certification cycles, capacity-expansion volatility, price competition, and policy disturbances. In its 2025 investor-relations activities the company itself admitted that the 2024 revenue growth was mainly driven by precursors and electronic specialty gases, while the average product gross margin fell year-on-year, mainly because some product prices declined slightly. Nata Opto-electronic's most genuine moat is not brand or network effect, but process accumulation + customer validation + high-purity stable-supply capability. This kind of moat is not always conspicuous on the financial statements, but it is crucial in the materials industry. The company discloses that in the synthesis and preparation, purification, analytical testing, and packaging containers of MO sources it has reached internationally advanced levels; as of the first half of 2025, the company and its main subsidiaries held 363 proprietary patents, including 193 invention patents, and have undertaken national projects such as the 863 Program and the 02 Major Special Project. By the end of 2025, media excerpts of the annual report show the patent count had risen to 380, of which 205 were invention patents. These all support its "not-easily-and-immediately replicable" capability in several high-end material categories.

But moat strength must be viewed segment by segment. On MO sources / advanced precursors, the moat is relatively strongest. The reason lies in purity, stability, supporting capability, and validation cycles. On electronic specialty gases, the moat is somewhat weaker, relying more on scale, supply stability, and customer onboarding, with price competition more evident. On ArF photoresist, the moat can in theory be very strong, but in reality it is still forming, because the revenue scale is currently too small and commercialization has just begun.

On whether "the moat is widening, stable, or narrowing", my judgment is: overall stable to slightly widening, but not significantly widening. The evidence for widening is that the company's R&D platform, product matrix, number of customer validations, and patent reserves are increasing, and ArF photoresist is advancing from "R&D" toward "validation + orders"; the evidence for insufficient width is that both 2024 and the first half of 2025 saw price or gross-margin pressure, especially in the specialty gas segment. A truly very wide moat should be able to pass on inflation and competition more stably; whereas Nata Opto-electronic currently has bargaining power mostly in certain high-end categories and has not yet fully established it at the overall level.

If asked about the difficulty of a competitor replicating it, my Inference is: replicating a single product may not take extremely long, but replicating "multi-category layout + validation record + volume-production stability + safety/environmental systems + customer-side trust" would take at least several years and from several hundred million to over a billion RMB of capital investment, especially when precursors, specialty gases, and high-end photoresist are laid out simultaneously. This judgment comes not from a single announcement but from the company's continuous disclosures about its technical system, in-house platform, validation progress, and product matrix.

On macro resilience, the company has some toughness but is not strongly defensive. Among the four quarters of 2025, fourth-quarter net profit attributable to the parent was only RMB 18.97 million, a clear pullback from the first three quarters; however, in the first quarter of 2026 it recovered to RMB 124 million. This shows the company can stay profitable, but profit volatility is not small. In an economic downturn or a contraction in industry capex, it is not as stable as consumer staples, but more like an industrial-materials growth stock that "swings widely in boom times and whose valuation also retreats quickly in downturns".

Is Management Trustworthy

My assessment of management is: overall rational, not quite an "outstanding capital allocator", but at least more credible than aggressive management. Three types of facts support this. First, the company's annual reports in recent years have all received a standard unqualified audit opinion, and the 2025 internal-control evaluation found no material weaknesses. Second, the company has not doggedly pushed every project to the end: the 2025 interim report explicitly disclosed that, due to intensifying market competition, the large subsequent R&D and equipment investment required, and rising risk that economic returns would fall short of expectations, the company terminated the "hexafluorobutadiene industrialization project" and sold the related assets to Shandong Qixin Gas Co., Ltd. for a consideration of RMB 69.03 million. Such behavior of "acknowledging a change in project economics and cutting losses in time" is more commendable than blindly spinning a story. Third, in 2025 the company continued to advance reforms in sales, procurement, R&D, and digitalization, showing that management does not rely solely on the industry's tailwind but is genuinely optimizing its operating organization.

But management is not without problems. In 2025 the company recognized RMB 160 million in asset-impairment losses, up about 26% year-on-year, and its goodwill balance fell about 71.9% year-on-year, reflecting that some past investment / asset allocation was not entirely successful. The 2020-2023 data in the table mainly come from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 annual report summaries; the 2024 data come from the 2024 audit report / 2024 annual report summary; the 2025 data come from the 2025 annual report summary and the 2025 financial statement report. The 2022-2024 capex figures come respectively from the cash-flow statements in the 2023 annual report and the 2024 audit report.

Looking at this table alone, three things matter.

First, revenue and profit growth over the past six years is real. From 2020 to 2025, revenue grew from RMB 595 million to RMB 2.585 billion, and net profit attributable to the parent grew from RMB 87 million to RMB 320 million. In 2025 the company also claimed to have achieved "nine consecutive years of growth" since 2017. This shows the company is not a stage-specific story suddenly stacked up by one or two boom years.

Second, cash-flow quality is clearly better than that of many peer growth stocks. Over the three years 2023-2025, net operating cash flow was RMB 529 million, 627 million, and 733 million respectively, all substantially higher than the net profit of the period. In other words, the company is not the typical "paper profit, empty pocket" case. In 2025 net cash flow from operating activities grew 16.76% year-on-year to RMB 733 million, and although it declined year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026 it remained positive at RMB 100 million. From an owner's perspective, this is a more important fact than merely looking at PE.

Third, growth is not costless. In 2022 the company's capex reached RMB 534 million, far higher than that year's operating cash flow of RMB 229 million, and free cash flow was significantly pressured; although capex later returned to the RMB 170-202 million range in 2023-2024 and free cash flow clearly recovered, this still reminds us: Nata Opto-electronic is not the kind of "money-printing machine" that needs almost no further investment. Its growth is inseparable from R&D, process, and new capacity, especially in businesses such as photoresist and advanced precursors.

Profit Quality and Balance Sheet

The 2025 financial statement report shows that in 2025 the company had operating profit of RMB 471 million, total profit of RMB 469 million, and net profit attributable to the parent of RMB 320 million. In the same year, other income was RMB 119 million and investment income was RMB 59.5 million, while asset-impairment losses reached RMB 160 million. There is an important quality judgment here: the company's profit is not driven purely by core-business gross margin—it does contain a certain component of subsidies / wealth-management / equity-method income; but on the other hand, the company did not window-dress by "under-provisioning", and instead recognized the sizable impairment loss in the current period. That said, working capital also has points worth watching. At the end of 2025 the company's accounts receivable were RMB 698 million, up 18.45% year-on-year, and inventory was RMB 843 million, up 16.66% year-on-year; by the first quarter of 2026, accounts receivable rose further to RMB 768 million, and inventory was still RMB 811 million. Owner Earnings Estimate

Definition and caliber The simplified caliber of Buffett-style Owner Earnings is usually: operating cash flow – maintenance capex. Because the full original figure for "cash paid to acquire fixed assets, intangible assets, and other long-term assets" in the body of the full-year 2025 audit report was not directly obtained this time, I take a conservative but transparent approach: based on the realized capex of RMB 170-202 million in 2023-2024, and considering the 2025 transfer of construction-in-progress to fixed assets, the continued R&D investment in photoresist and precursors, and operating-maintenance needs, I assume 2025 maintenance capex of about RMB 210-230 million. This is obviously not a precise figure, but for conservative investors it is more prudent than treating all operating cash flow as free cash.

Under this assumption, 2025 Owner Earnings is roughly:

  • Net operating cash flow: RMB 733 million

  • Less: maintenance capex: RMB 210-230 million

  • Equals: Owner Earnings: about RMB 500-520 million

If I also apply a small conservative discount to the relatively strong 2025 working-capital release, I would prefer to place the sustainable Owner Earnings center of gravity at RMB 480-500 million. This is higher than the 2025 net profit of RMB 320 million, showing that the company's real cash-generating power is better than its accounting profit; but note that it contains some wealth-management income and interest-income impact, so it cannot be simply understood as "the pure core operating profit has already reached RMB 500 million".

Based on the approximate current price of RMB 56 per share adopted in this report and total share capital of 691 million shares, the market cap is about RMB 38.7 billion. Using an Owner Earnings center of gravity of RMB 480-500 million, the current price is equivalent to about 77-81x Owner Earnings. For an industrial-materials business that has not yet formed an extremely wide moat and where some businesses' gross margins are still pressured, this multiple is clearly on the high side.

Under these assumptions, the rough per-share intrinsic values I obtain are:

Nata Opto-electronic's own PE and PB are both higher than most comparables; there is at least no value-type opportunity of "peers are worse, it is cheaper". In particular Yoke Technology, as a stronger, larger, and more mature platform-type electronic-materials company, is currently valued no more expensively than Nata Opto-electronic—a direct counter-argument to whether it is "worth tying up my capital".

Compared with the risk-free rate, China's current 10-year government bond yield is about 1.74%-1.75%. Of course, equity investment should earn more than government bonds; but the problem is that Nata Opto-electronic's current valuation is too high, so the potential annualized return over the next decade may not be significantly higher than government bonds plus a reasonable risk premium.
